8 NEWS www.finishingmagazine.co.uk QUALICOAT looks at the state of the market Breaking ground Axalta broke ground on 19 June on its new, 7,250 square-metre stateof-the-art facility to support its Refinish business in the Netherlands. The new facility will be equipped with the latest technology and energy-saving features. Construction at the site in Tiel is expected to be completed by mid-2021. Tiel Councillor Ben Brink and Yves Kerstens, president of Axalta in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), broke ground at a ceremony to mark the event, which was attended by members of the Axalta European Leadership Team and the Management Team in the Netherlands. “The investment in this facility is important to the future growth and long-term success of our Refinish business in Europe,” said Yves Kerstens, president of Axalta in EMEA. “Our new Tiel facility will feature state-of-the-art technologies that will enable productivity and sustainability, which will benefit our business and help us maximise service to customers. We are committed to investing in the future of Axalta in ways that will help us keep the needs of our customers at the forefront.” Lanemark signs Turkish agreement Lanemark Combustion Engineering has announced a major agreement with a new distributor in Turkey. The link with YETEN Combustion and Energy Technologies Ltd., based in Istanbul, will create opportunities for both organisations to add each other’s burner equipment to its range – with each enhancing its services to its customer base. “YETEN is very well established in the field of high temperature burners which are used extensively in areas such as metal processing,” says Adrian Cadman, sales manager at Nuneaton-based Lanemark. “Now, by being able to make selected burners from their range available to our own market, we will be able to develop our involvement in areas such as steel and aluminium manufacturing.” With an ongoing focus on research, development and design – including use of state of the art Fluent Computational Fluid Dynamics – and on providing ecofriendly-solutions, YETEN’s reputation reflects the philosophy that has underpinned Lanemark’s own worldwide success for some four decades. “The organisation also offers extensive test facilities which, again, mirrors our own growing capability in this area,” adds Adrian Cadman. The agreement with YETEN is also set to strengthen Lanemark’s own burner sales in the new distributor’s markets. The company’s (FD) forced-draught oven burners, (TX) tank heating burners and its (DB) duct burners – each used extensively in processing and manufacturing operations from aluminium anodising to food processing – will, in turn, all enhance YETEN’s own market strength. As the lockdown now begins to ease, the construction sector begins to get back onto its feet and QUALICOAT members return to production following strict government guidelines. The supply chain for both powders and pretreatment systems is generally working well with no shortage in supply and reported quick deliveries. At the outset of the lockdown, most coating members closed down plants in late March due in part to a slow down in orders, but primarily due to an uncertain forward workload. Some members remained open but with a much reduced labour force and an implemented safety policy in line with government regulations. It is reported that by the end of May most members were back into production at various levels of capacity, although members in Scotland have yet to see demand begin to pick up at this this time. Social distancing has been a challenge for all businesses, but in the coatings workplace the two metre distancing can be achieved with a little planning. Staggered starting times ensures that changing rooms are in light almost constant use and with staggered lunch breaks, social distancing can be complied with. Members have trained staff in new safety regimes and have implemented COVID-19 Safety Handbooks. Supply of PPE for operatives does not seem to have been an issue and it is reported that costs for such kit has almost quadrupled in some sectors. One member having access to 3D printers has been meeting the need for masks by printing these and working with the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes to get these distributed though to hospitals and other health care facilities. The forecast view is patchy, but some coaters are suggesting that they will be back up to 50% or more capacity in June, but there is a fear that as construction sites run slower, that business will not get back to near pre-lockdown throughput until late in the year or even into 2021. There is also a real fear that if there is an increase in the alert level alongside a second peak, this may send businesses back into lockdown. David has been elected as vice chair due to his proven leadership role within Elcometer Limited and familiarity with NACE International as a whole and its technical committees in particular. David has worked as technical manager at Elcometer for over nine years, where he has worked closely with NACE, SSPC, ASTM, BSI and ISO on Standardisation, writing and presenting technical papers at industry conferences around the world.
