Waiau School has had abusy starttothe<br />
new school year.<br />
PrincipalCraigSedgwick says his staff<br />
and pupils havethoroughly enjoyed<br />
getting stuck intotheirlearning over the<br />
last few weeks.<br />
“The children are superlucky to have a<br />
dedicated group of teachers and other<br />
adultsworking hard to provideexciting<br />
and engaging learning experiences.”<br />
Swimming in the new pool has played a<br />
big partintheir learning so far this year,<br />
he says. “We have abrilliant pool facility<br />
and some expert swimming instruction to<br />
help us achieve our swimmingrelated<br />
goals.<br />
“Wai Swim visitedusrain or shine for<br />
nearlytwo weeks and had small group<br />
sessions to develop confidence and<br />
technique.<br />
“Each afternoonhas beenspent in the<br />
pool also, under the guidance of Waiau’s<br />
resident swimming coach, Caroline<br />
Eastmond. The progress of our swimmers<br />
has been very impressive.”<br />
The Waiau School swimming sports<br />
were held on <strong>February</strong> 18.<br />
“Everyone displayed fabulous<br />
sportsmanship and put in their best<br />
effort. We had very proudswimmersand<br />
parents.”<br />
Next on the community calendar is the<br />
annual Amuri A&P Show, and Waiau<br />
School is looking to leave alasting<br />
impressionthis year with contributions<br />
to variouscompetitionsand displays, Mr<br />
Sedgwick says.<br />
“Not only will everyone be working<br />
hard on abeautifulart piecetodisplay<br />
and adecorativesand saucer,but the<br />
children havealso selected one or more<br />
otherevents to enter.’’<br />
The worksinclude pencil drawings,<br />
clay sculpture,origami, Christmas<br />
decorations, wearable artsand arange of<br />
baking categories.<br />
Laterinterm one, the school will visit<br />
TakahangaMarae in Kaikoura.<br />
