Corn initiative asweet fundraiser for school<br />

A&P ShowonMarch 6.<br />
The schoolisonce again planning its<br />
annual sweetcornsale, with the proceeds<br />
goingtowards employing an extra teacher.<br />

‘‘We hope to have picking under way for<br />
theAmuri show, where we will be selling<br />
seven cobs for $5,’’says Kate Jopp,<br />
Rotherham School board of trustees’<br />
community liaison.<br />
‘‘We will also have aroadside standthat<br />
we pick daily for to keep stocked up.<br />
Sometimes we havetopick twice aday so<br />
ourcorn is superfresh —paddocktoplate<br />
within hours.<br />
‘‘It’s deliciousand spray free.’’<br />
This year, organisers plan to have astall<br />
at the Hanmer Springs market on<br />
Saturdays,whilepreorderscan be made<br />
viaFacebook and, if there is enough<br />
interest, volunteers will deliver.<br />
‘‘Last year we managed to fundraise<br />
$8500 and thisyear our planisto exceed<br />
this,’’Kate says.<br />
‘‘It’s our majorfundraiser for the year.<br />
Ourfunds go towards aboardoftrusteesfundedthirdteacher<br />
to keep our class<br />
sizes small and give our children more<br />
oneonone teacher time.<br />
‘‘We couldn’t do this without the help<br />
andsupport of our school community. We<br />
arevery lucky to have our corn seed<br />
donated by Talleys, grown by local farmer<br />
Ross Beaven, and plantedbyFlintoft<br />
Contractors.’’<br />
