reasonable that we learn

uncertain times. This is

where CBK’s dynamic

LG Offers Custom Modules to Cover Key Services

When businesses invest in HVAC equipment there

can be a number of benefits from cost savings to

efficiencies that help a business perform better

from an operational standpoint. Which why it’s important

to keep up a maintenance schedule to ensure equipment

performance and prevent unnecessary operating

expenses. LG Electronics (LG) has developed the VRF

System Maintenance service, to provide services that meet

customer needs and help provide continuous customer

care. With improved reliability, standardized inspection and

improvement guides LG’s service team can provide better

service to meet and exceed expectations for customer

With a basic package,

businesses can benefit from

three key services: Inspection,

Cleaning and Replacement;

which altogether support

Services

Regular inspection service by

LG experts identify expected

problems and issues beforehand.

An expert performs an inspection

that checks faults in components

and performance abnormalities

in a customer’s HVAC equipment.

Catching these problems early

prevents further damage to the

unit and unnecessary operating

expenses through replacement

and repair, by early recognition of

failures and abnormalities.

Improve Equipment Quality with

Cleaning Maintenance

LG’s eco-friendly cleaning solution

performs excellently in response

to contamination. The cleaning

removes dust and keeps the

indoor environment comfortable

by cleaning the air-flow system

which can be subject to pressure

loss and optimal airflow because of

lingering contaminants. The service

is handled by certified experts

who are trained to properly clean

equipment. Improve heating and

cooling efficiencies and reduce

energy consumption by removing

pollutants from the filter and heat

exchanger. It is critical to have VRF

products be periodically cleaned

by a specialist. Failure to perform

systematic cleaning may harm

cooling efficiency, air quality and

health.

Providing Confidence in Replacement

Parts

Air-conditioning equipment can break down

randomly due to changes in the operating

environment and circumstances. When aging of

parts progresses, failures increase. In case of

repair due to sudden break down, it is difficult

to respond to emergencies due to excessive

costs. Experts provide replacement service

with genuine parts when an unexpected

breakdown occurs and when parts replacement

is necessary after regular on-site or remote

diagnosis. With LG, it is possible to select a

service level that suits business needs, and

operation cost within the budget according to

the service contract.

By investing in a basic maintenance package,

businesses can experience greater cost

savings and confidence in their essential

service needs.

Panasonic Leadership

Over the last five decades,

Panasonic Philippines has been led

by many outstanding country heads

and group managers, and now

54 years later, the leadership has

fallen on the shoulders of Genaro

Castro or most fondly referred to as

Pari. Having come from a family of

Electrical Engineers, Pari had been

set on taking up engineering since

he was in grade school. He really

wanted to become an Electrical

Engineer at first. But come high

school, he discovered the many

other fields of engineering and

decided that he would pursue

either Computer Engineering or

Electronics and Communication

Engineering instead.

Upon the suggestion of his dad,

he went with the latter and enrolled

at Mapúa University (then Mapúa

Institute of Technology). Pari

described himself as your typical

college student who commutes

for two hours from Taytay, Rizal to

Intramuros and has to study on the

bus on the way to school or home.

He eventually got his degree in

1999, and in that same year, he took

and passed the board exams.

When he began working in March 2000, he

immediately pursued a job in the technology

industry and landed at Panasonic Philippines

right off the bat. He was a sales engineer

then, handling a variety of products from fax

machines to telephones and PBX systems.

Come 2003, he got assigned in Panasonic’s

Cebu office, where he helped the company

pioneer the system solutions business in the

Visayas region.

From there, he worked his way up until he

ultimately became the company’s latest

Country Head for the System Solutions

Group. Being in the company for 21 years

now, Pari has worked under different types

of leaders, from Japanese to Filipino. All

of them have varied styles when it comes

to leadership, but Pari leans more on the

coaching style of leadership.

In the workplace, he will typically just show

his people the output that he expects and

gives them suggestions to achieve such

output. At the end of the day, though, his

subordinates are given the freedom to create

their own workplan as long as they come up

with the same output they are targeting.

The Company and its Products

Founded in Japan in 1918, Panasonic was

started by 23-year-old Konosuke Matsushita

with a desire to create things of value. It was

initially called Matsushita Electric Housewares

Manufacturing Works, whose first three staff

members were Matsushita himself, his wife,

and his brother-in-law. Matsushita believed

that the market for convenient, high quality

household electrical fixtures was untapped

and huge, so he set to work and eventually

came up with two new products - an

attachment plug and a two-way socket. The

products surprisingly became a hit as they

were not only cheaper by 30% to 50% but

they were also of higher quality than those

already available in the market.

35

C O V E R

S T O R Y

From there, the company

grew until it established the

“National” brand in April 1927

and incorporated as Matsushita

Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. on

December 1935 with 10 million yen

in capital. The “Panasonic” brand

was later created in 1955 and was

initially used as a brand for audio

speakers. But since 2008, it has

been used as the corporate brand,

representing the entire company,

its products, and services.

Panasonic came to the Philippines

in 1957 as a manufacturing

company and eventually ventured

into sales and marketing in the

1960s. The plants in the country

manufacture a variety of home

appliances like fans, refrigerators,

and washing machines for

local use and window-type air

conditioning units for export.

To date, Panasonic offers five

product categories: appliance,

light solution products (electric

switches, lighting fixtures),

automotive products (batteries

for electric vehicles, car stereos),

industrial products (electronic

components and devices), and

connected solutions (projectors,

flat panel displays, CCTVs, PBX,

computers, POS, etc.).

Panasonic Philippines generally

focus on offering connected

solutions that include Broadcast

and ProAV, Communication

Solutions, Visual System Solutions,

Computer Product Solutions, and

Security Solutions.

With its impressive portfolio of Japanquality

products and century-long

history in the field of electronics,

Panasonic Philippines has successfully

earned the respect and loyalty of many

Filipino consumers across the region.

But what actually sets the company

apart from its dozens of competitors

is the best coverage for warranty it

gives to its products, specifically the

connected solutions products. Some

of their products have longer warranty

period compared to other brands,

featuring three-year warranties instead

of just one or two.

Another advantage of choosing

Panasonic PH products is that their

after-sales support is accessible

nationwide. Unlike some brands whose

service centers are only available

in major cities like Metro Manila

and Cebu, the company provides

authorized service centers across

the majority of the Philippines that are

manned by certified engineers and

technicians.

Among the many projects that

Panasonic PH has done over its fivedecade

presence in the country, its

most impressive one yet is the fountain

projection mapping showcased in

Ayala Nuvali last December 2019.

The show is deemed as the first of its

kind in Southeast Asia, where moving

contents are projected onto a water

fountain. The best part of the show is

that it is not only showing images but

is also available for interaction with the

audience through Wi-Fi. Almost the

same project has been implemented

for Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)

last December 2020, where various

Christmas and inspirational contents

were flashed on the façade of the BSP

building.

Last year, Panasonic also provided

product solutions for the new

station of PTV4 in Davao to make

national announcements, media,

and conferences easier and more

convenient for the President and the

government’s broadcasting team.

To date, Panasonic PH is currently

working on several solutions to

manage hospitals and medical

facilities better as a response to

the COVID-19 pandemic. They

have developed a handful of

technologies for CCTVs, including

facial recognition to control the entry

and exit of people, temperature

monitoring, and face mask detection.

Panasonic PH also promotes the

use of digital signage for doctor’s

offices and laboratories that will

display information, instructions,

and announcements, ultimately

limiting face-to-face contact. In

addition to this, the company

supports PBX systems for paging

purposes, video intercom solutions

for monitoring COVID-19 positive

patients, document scanners for

digitizing health declaration forms,

and video conferencing systems for

telemedicine.

Moving forward, Panasonic PH is

starting to formulate solutions for

numerous industries for the new

normal, specifically for construction,

manufacturing, call center, and hotel.

The company will also begin to focus

on providing services with their

current products, venture into sales

outside Metro Manila, and expand

their manpower in the next three to

five years.

Quick Trivia

This includes collaborations

and co-creation with various

stakeholders, primarily on

corporate activities that offer

valuable products and services

that contribute to people’s lives,

the society, and the global

environment.

Among the Panasonic SDGs

initiatives is the creation a zero

CO2 emissions society through

its evolving rechargeable battery

technology for eco-conscious

vehicles, fuel cells, and zeroemissions

factories. Panasonic

is also into building sustainable

communities that protect its

citizens and produce energy;

and promoting safe mobility for

all through its sensing and image

recognition technology.

As a manufacturer, Panasonic

gears towards the sustainable

use of resources, as well, as it

promotes recycling household

appliances and expanding the use

of renewable resources.

• Did you know that Panasonic is

into property development in Japan,

as well? The company is one of the

first Japanese developers to create a

smart city and sell smart houses and

condominiums that are fully furnished

with equipment from Panasonic itself.

This includes not only the home

appliances, but also the bathtub and

toilet bowl!

• Did you know that Panasonic and

Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd already have

a deep relationship even before the

former’s acquisition in 2010? This is

because one of the first three staff

members of Panasonic’s production

team in 1918 is actually the founder

of Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd and the

brother-in-law of Konosuke Matsushita!

While Panasonic is particularly wellknown

worldwide for its high-quality

and reliable home appliances, it is

actually more than just that. The

company provides solutions and

services that spans many other

industries and solves countless

problems in our everyday lives. It has

adapted well under the threat of the

COVID-19 pandemic and continues to

contribute to the safety and comfort of

Filipinos across the country.

After growing from a three-member

production staff in 1918 to the tech

giant that it is today, Panasonic

promises to improve its services

and even plans on venturing into the

construction and call center industries.

We will definitely see more of the

company in next five years as we

come into the new normal.

Cost-Effective Solar Installation

from NuPON Technologies

NuPon Technology is providing the most durable and reliable UPS for various

industries in the Philippines.

It has been almost a full year since

the lockdown has happened in

the country due to the pandemic.

To say that we have seen the

world adapt and change to adjust

to this abrupt happening is an

understatement. Weekly social

gatherings have since become

a rare treat for people instead

of a weekly occurrence, travel

abroad has become a thing of

the past, and working from home

has become the global norm.

Unfortunately, not everyone can

work comfortably in their home

thanks to faulty and unreliable

power sources. Thankfully, NuPon

Technology has the solution to this

problem of the new normal.

NuPon boasts multiple products to help each individual and organization struggling with

severable, low-quality utility power. Industries that revolve around computers, network servers,

data centers, telecommunication, high-tech semiconductor manufacturing, petrochemical

equipment, etc. will surely benefit from these products. They cater to the smallest voltage (650

VA) to give power back up to PC or CCTV, to 1000 kVA for big machines and equipment.

One example of their UPS is the line-interactive UPS (800 VA - 5 kVA). These matte black

power boxes are commonly used for desktop PCs, workstations, network servers, and small

machines. They come in a tower type or rack mount design for easy storing and space-saving

concerns.

78

For CCTV systems, laboratory

equipment, or even 3 phase

system machines, the online/

double-conversion high-frequency

UPS (1 kVA - 20 kVA) or the (10

kVA - 40 kVA) variants will prove to

be satisfactory, especially with its 0

ms transfer time from line mode to

battery mode feature.

Industrial equipment and bigger

machines will need NuPon’s online/

double-conversion low-frequency

UPS (10 kVA - 600 kVA) models

with isolation transformers to adapt

to the different, often unforgiving

industrial environments. These

UPS devices are more than

enough to protect the most critical

of loads.

Lastly, their modular UPS (60 kVA -

500 kVA) is an online hot-swappable

machine with parallel redundancy, high

efficiency and power density, and an

optional built-in isolation transformer.

There are many more machines that will

help whoever avails of the UPS, such as

NuPon’s STAR T1V, T2V, T3I, T4I, T5100,

T6I, R3I series, and much, much more.

NuPon is also leading multiple projects

in the country.

For instance, they are present in the

environmental health and safety sector

in Batangas with the first Philippine

industrial park. By supplying and

installing 7 units of 100 kVA 3 phase,

low-frequency UPS, providing basic

training for the operation and simple

troubleshooting of the units, and

conducting quarterly monitoring and

checking of these UPS units as a form

of after-sales service, NuPon is taking

multiple steps to helming progress in

the Philippines.

They have also provided several units of 10 kVA

single-phase UPS and power cables for WD/Hitachi,

a multinational company, for the Laguna Technopark

Inc.

Over on the northern area of Baguio, NuPon has

graciously blessed Manor Hotel Baguio with 3

and 6 kVA UPS for their servers and lobby display

projectors. Company representatives visited Baguio

while carrying 10 batteries despite a typhoon.

They pulled out the unit from the hotel, replaced

the batteries in the branch office, and tested and

delivered them back to the hotel in working condition.

For more information about NuPON

Technology, visit their website https://

www.nuponcorpphils.com/ or contact the

following branches

Going to Bataan, they supplied 100 units

of customized 650 VA units to Mitsumi, a

Japanese company. Unlike most areas in

the Philippines, the industrial zone in which

this company is situated still utilizes 110 VAC

power instead of 220 VAC. They were able to

provide their need for 110 VAC UPS which is

not readily available in the Philippine market

today.

NuPon is also concurrently present in

Cebu, Cavite, and many other places as

they unfailingly supply multiple industries,

companies, and location their helpful

machinery and UPS units and other services

to ensure smooth operations for their clients.

Needless to say, NuPon’s presence in the

country and the efficiency of their units

speak for themselves. As they continue to

breach boundaries and operate in a postpandemic

world, their UPS units will continue

to supply uninterrupted power for all.

From Plasma TV’s and

homes contain more electronics

than ever. With

this automation comes an

increased vulnerability to

the effects of surges.

One lightning storm could cost

a homeowner thousands, even

tens of thousands of dollars

worth of damage to the electronics

in a home. Once a surge

enters a home and damages

the electronic components, the

homeowner is forced to embark

on a time-consuming and frustrating

journey. One must:

• Diagnose all of the issues

• Attempt to find all locations of

damage

• Determine if your equipment

is under warranty

• Locate replacement products

• Contact numerous service

departments

A homeowner can help protect

against such damage with a

comprehensive approach to

surge protection. Eaton’s surge

suppression products offer

the homeowner a complete

approach, by offering both Stage

I and Stage II surge protection.

Stage I: Service Entrance

Protection is designed to provide

premier surge protection for

AC power, telephone and cable

at the point of entrance to the

NEWS

Groupe PSA and FCA plan to join forces

to build a world leader for a new era in

sustainable mobility

Discussions have opened

a path to the creation of

a new group with global

scale and resources

owned 50 percent by Groupe PSA

shareholders and 50 percent by

FCA shareholders. In a rapidly

changing environment, with new

challenges in connected, electrified,

shared and autonomous mobility,

the combined entity would leverage

its strong global R&D footprint and

ecosystem to foster innovation and

meet these challenges with speed

and capital efficiency.

• The combination would create

the 4th largest global OEM in

terms of annual unit sales (8.7m

vehicles)

• At its inception, the combined

company would realize among

the highest margins in the

markets where it would operate,

based on FCA’s strength in

North America and Latin

America and Groupe PSA’s in

Europe

• The combination would unite

the groups’ respective brand

strengths across Luxury,

Premium, Mainstream

Passenger Car, SUV and Trucks

& Light Commercial – making

them stronger together

• The merged entity would

bring together the companies’

extensive and growing

capabilities in the technologies

shaping the new era of

sustainable mobility, including

86

electrified powertrain,

autonomous driving and digital

connectivity

• Approximately €3.7 billion

estimated annual run-rate

synergies without any plant

closures resulting from the

transaction

• Highly respected combined

management team recognised

for exceptional value creation

and with proven success in

previous OEM combinations

• Dutch parent company

Board would have balanced

representation and a majority

of independent Directors. John

Elkann as Chairman and Carlos

Tavares as CEO and member of

the Board

London and Rueil Malmaison 03

November 2019. The Supervisory

Board of Peugeot S.A. and the

Board of Directors of Fiat Chrysler

Automobiles N.V. (“FCA”) (NYSE:

FCAU / MTA: FCA). have each

unanimously agreed to work

towards a full combination of

their respective businesses by way

of a 50/50 merger. Both boards

have given the mandate to their

respective teams to finalize the

discussions to reach a binding

Memorandum of Understanding in

the coming weeks.

The plan to combine the Groupe

PSA and FCA businesses follows

intensive discussions between

the senior managements of the

two companies. Both share the

conviction that there is compelling

logic for a bold and decisive move

that would create an industry

leader with the scale, capabilities

and resources to capture

successfully the opportunities and

manage effectively the challenges of

the new era in mobility.

The proposed combination would

create the 4th largest global

OEM in terms of unit sales (8.7

million vehicles), with combined

revenues of nearly €170 billion and

recurring operating profit of over

€11 billion on a simple aggregated

basis of 2018 results excluding

Magneti Marelli and Faurecia.

The significant value accretion

resulting from the transaction is

estimated to be approximately

€3.7 billion in annual run-rate

synergies derived principally

from a more efficient allocation

of resources for large-scale

investments in vehicle platforms,

powertrain and technology and

from the enhanced purchasing

capability inherent in the

combined group’s new scale. These

synergy estimates are not based on

any plant closures.

It is projected that 80 percent of

the synergies would be achieved

after 4 years. The total one-time

cost of achieving the synergies is

estimated at €2.8 billion.

The shareholders of each company

would own 50 percent of the

equity of the newly combined

group and would therefore share

equally in the benefits arising from

the combination. The transaction

would be affected by way of a

merger under a Dutch parent

company and the governance

structure of the new company

would be balanced between the

contributing shareholders, with

the majority of the directors being

independent. The Board would

be composed of 11 members.

Five Board members would be

nominated by FCA (including

John Elkann as Chairman) and

five would be nominated by

Groupe PSA (including the Senior

Independent Director and the Vice

Chairman) . The Chief Executive

Officer would be Carlos Tavares

for an initial term of five years and

he would also be a member of the

Board.

Carlos Tavares said: “This

convergence brings significant

value to all the stakeholders and

opens a bright future for the

combined entity. I’m pleased with

the work already done with Mike

and will be very happy to work

with him to build a great company

together.”

Mike Manley said, “I’m delighted

by the opportunity to work with

Carlos and his team on this

potentially industry-changing

combination. We have a long

history of successful cooperation

with Groupe PSA and I am

convinced that together with our

great people we can create a world

class global mobility company.”

The new group’s Dutch-domiciled

parent company would be listed

on Euronext (Paris), the Borsa

Italiana (Milan) and the New

York Stock Exchange and would

continue to maintain significant

presences in the current operating

head-office locations in France,

Italy and the US.

It is proposed that the by-laws

of the new combined company

would provide that the loyalty

voting program will not operate

to grant voting rights to any single

shareholder in the Shareholders

Meeting exceeding 30 percent

of the total votes cast. It is also

foreseen that there would be no

carry over of existing double

voting rights but that new double

voting rights would accrue after

a three-year holding period after

completion of the merger.

A standstill in respect of the

shareholdings of EXOR N.V.,

Bpifrance Participations SA,

DFG and the Peugeot Family

would apply for a period of 7

years following completion of

the merger. EXOR, Bpifrance

Participations and the Peugeot

Family would be subject to a

3-year lock-up in respect of

their shareholdings except

that the Peugeot Family would

be permitted to increase its

shareholding by up to 2.5

percent during the first 3 years

following the closing, only by

acquiring shares from Bpifrance

Participations and DFG.

Prior to the completion of the

transaction, FCA would distribute

to its shareholders a special

dividend of €5.5 billion, as well

as its shareholding in Comau. In

addition, prior to completion,

Peugeot would distribute to its

shareholders its 46 percent stake

in Faurecia. This would enable the

combined groups’ shareholders

to equally share in the synergies

and benefits that would flow

from a merger while recognizing

the significant value of FCA’s

differentiated platform in North

America and strong position

in Latin America, including its

market-leading margins in those

regions. It would also reflect the

added value that FCA’s higher-end

global brands Alfa Romeo and

Maserati would bring given their

substantial development potential.

The extended portfolio would

cover all market segments with

iconic brands and strong products

based on rationalized platforms

and optimization of investments.

The proposal would be

submitted to the information

and consultation process of the

relevant employee bodies, and

would be subject to customary

closing conditions, including final

board approvals of the binding

Memorandum of Understanding

and agreement on definitive

documentation.

Across International Offers Ultra-Low

Freezers Crucial to Speed Up the

COVID-19 Vaccination Roll Out

102

As the nation grapples with the

nightmare of the COVID-19 crisis,

the Livingston, New Jersey cold

storage freezer, refrigerator and storage

box manufacturer Across International,

with its Sparks, Nevada, branch to service

the West Coast, has immediately risen

alongside local emergency responders to

face the unprecedented challenge. The

lab equipment provider has deployed

the most versatile, reliable, efficient, easy

to operate -86°C cold storage units, the

flagship line of their catalog.

With the upheavals in the healthcare

community, these freezers make it

easier, safer and more affordable to store

COVID-19 vaccination. Built not only

with CFC and VFC requirements and

cETLus compliance but also ease of the

operator’s use in mind, the manufacturer

is more than ready to help out the most

affected counties in the U.S. The fact of

the matter is that healthcare professionals

and hospitals will have to adopt a new

model to store COVID-19 vaccines

and require the right technology and

support to back it. It is a paradigm shift,

and Across International understands

the relevance of its ultra-low freezers,

along with the values of the healthcare

professionals that use them in the market.

Across International started its efforts

to combat the COVID-19 pandemic at

hometown, proudly offering its vaccine

storage solutions to Essex County, NJ, a

role model in the emergency response

efforts; as Julie Wernau of the WSJ put

it, “while officials struggle at times with

supply hiccups caused by slow-toarrive

vaccines, Essex County said it

is using 100% of its doses every week,

with surrounding counties coming to it

for advice.” Across International was

also there when first responders from

the city of Elizabeth, NJ, and counties of

Nevada and Washoe, neighbors of their

Sparks location, followed suit, entrusting

the programmable freezers with their

precious vaccine reserves.

Key features that set the freezers Across

International offers apart as healthcare

and emergency response teams weigh

the decision of where to turn for cold

storage include: ease of data collection,

storage and export, simplifying tracking

the conditions under which vaccines are

stored; ergonomic design so they are

easy to open, quieter to work around,

and level even on uneven lab floors;

safety features like alarms, internal

batteries to run controllers if power is

lost, CO2 backup to ensure samples are

protected in case of critical failure, data

loggers with Wi-fi/Bluetooth enabled

text and email alerts, transmitters for

connection to external systems, all

geared towards ensuring no vaccines

go to waste. This is crucial, as the

WHO published in 2005 a guideline for

program managers that found based on

their data an estimated 50% of vaccines

globally are destroyed between failures

in temperature control and mishandling

during transportation, the latter of which

inspired the Ai -70 C shipping cube.

Not only does Across International seek to

minimize vaccine loss due to improper storage but

also take into account the growing environmental

concerns in its selection of CFC-free refrigerants,

opting for HC in the design of their RapidChill line,

which cools faster, is readily available for recharge

and comes with a lower energy consumption,

environmental footprint and cost of ownership. This

technology earned the RapidChill 20 and 26 Cu.

Ft. models the EnergyStar rating for vaccination

centers with big cold storage needs not looking to

receive a big electric bill to match it.

While the two branches stand side by side with our

essential workers assisting the vaccination efforts

however they can, Across International hopes

the vaccination rollout throughout the country will

occur faster. The manufacturer realizes the gravity

of the situation and affirms that the distribution of

the vaccine has become integral to return back to

normalcy.

Outlook on the Global RNA Vaccine

Patent Landscape

The idea of using mRNA as vaccines

has been investigated for nearly three

decades. By winning the race for a

Covid-19 vaccine, mRNA vaccines have

proven their worth, and it has highlighted

their advantages over conventional vaccines.

Now, all major pharmaceutical companies

are, in some way, testing out the technology

by entering into license agreements and/

or collaboration with well-established RNA

companies (Pfizer, Sanofi, AstraZeneca, GSK,

Merck, Roche, Bayer, etc.). Now that the

first products have arrived on the market, IP

positions have to be defined as companies will

enforce their patents to secure their positions

on the market. Patent litigations have already

been initiated before the EPO and the USPTO

against key patents.

Over 30 opposition proceedings have been

identified herein, most of which were filed in the

past 2 years and still pending. In this context,

Arbutus recently succeeded in maintaining one

of its key US patents covering its LNP delivery

system, that could potentially cover Moderna’s

RNA vaccine. However, as Moderna already

announced, it is unlikely that patents will be

enforced during the pandemic. The speed at

which an mRNA vaccine can be designed has

been the key to the recent success. Indeed,

the first batches for human testing were made

in less than 2 months, and authority approvals

106

were granted in less than a year. Clinical trials

have demonstrated their safety and efficacy

on mRNA vaccine candidates (about 95%

effective in preventing COVID-19).

Beyond a COVID-19 vaccine, RNA technology

holds high promise for new vaccines

against cancer and challenging viruses that

conventional vaccines have failed to address

(e.g. HIV, HSV, RSV). Moreover, this emerging

technology successfully triggers antigenspecific

T cell responses in cancer therapy. It

also allows personalized immunotherapy by

matching the genetic profile of each person’s

cancer and inducing an immune response

against the mutated part of the tumors (cancer

neoantigen vaccines). In this evolving context,

it is crucial to understand the intellectual

property position and strategy of these different

players. Such knowledge can help detect

business risks and opportunities, anticipate

emerging technologies, and enable strategic

decisions to strengthen market position.

The first patent family identified was published

in 1990. However, the technology was in a

maturation phase up to 2010, as evidenced by

a relatively low number of patent publications.

This maturation phase was mostly related to the

problem of rapid naked RNA degradation and

the delivery system. One of the key discoveries

that allowed the mRNA vaccine field to expand

was based on research by Kariko et al. (2005

and 2008) on the incorporation of modified

nucleoside into mRNA to increase stability

and to ablate the mammalian innate immune

response through the activation of Toll-like

receptors (patented technology filed by the

Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania).

The other key discovery was the use of lipid

particles to protect and deliver the RNA

molecule into the cells (patented by Protiva

Therapeutics, now Arbutus Biopharma). The

combination of these two discoveries allowed

the field to expand, with an approximate 9-fold

increase in patent publications.

Trust in COVID-19 Vaccine Shifts 67%,

Medisafe Reports

114

Respondents are eager to take the

vaccine despite concerns over sideeffects

and distribution challenges

Results from a new Medisafe survey of

more than 4,000 patients reveal new

confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine,

with 80% of respondents placing trust

in the shot, compared to just 13% of

patients surveyed in October 2020. The

new Medisafe survey aimed to examine

patients’ feelings about entering year two

of the pandemic, the COVID-19 vaccine,

and the impact of the virus.

Survey findings show that 56% of

respondents will get the vaccine as

soon as its available, compared to just

21% last October, and 6% have already

received their vaccination. Despite the

eagerness to receive their vaccine, half of

all respondents have concerns about side

effects; 40% believe it will have limited

effectiveness; and 37% believe it may

take too long to distribute.

The challenges in distribution are also

contributing to patients’ attitudes on when

they expect to return to normal activities.

Nearly 50% believe it won’t be until

October 2021 or later before returning

to traditional activity. 29 percent believe

the national government has hindered

vaccine distribution, while 25% say limited

vaccine supply is to blame. Despite these

challenges, vaccine manufacturers saw

a 10% increase in favorability, with Pfizer

listed as the preferred vaccine in the US

among those currently available.

“The results from this latest survey show

that patients are eager to take the COVID-19

vaccine, while also recognizing that normal

activity is unlikely to resume until late in the

year, and the pandemic has had lasting

impact on their stress, exercise, and diet,”

said Medisafe Chief Marketing Officer Jennifer

Butler. “This survey provides greater visibility

into patients’ concerns with taking the vaccine

as we enter year two of the pandemic, and

captures trends related to vaccine trust, impact

of the COVID-19 virus, and optimism toward

recovery.”

Beyond the COVID-19 vaccine, survey

respondents also indicated how the pandemic

has impacted their lives upon entering into its

second year. Every single respondent say they

know a friend or family member that has been

infected with COVID-19. One in 10 patients

contracted the virus themselves, and 13% say

they have lost a loved one to the virus.

The emotional toll of the pandemic has also

upended how patients are coping, with 60%

reporting higher stress levels compared to just

a year ago. Half of all respondents say they

are exercising less than a year ago. The results

also show that men are more optimistic of a

faster recovery, and users in their 20s and 30s

have the highest amount of stress related to the

pandemic among all age groups.

“With more than 7MM users relying on

Medisafe to help manage medications, we’re

able to capture patients’ attitudes in real-time

to understand the impact of the pandemic

against the backdrop of a chronic condition,”

Butler added. “When viewed through the

lens of patients in various geographic

areas, generations, and treatment areas, the

COVID-19 crisis takes a more precise view

on the lives of some of the most vulnerable

populations.”

Medisafe’s survey was conducted within its

digital platform January 15 – January 22,

capturing the viewpoints of more than 4,000

patients who use the digital drug companion

to help manage one or more medications in

conjunction with a medical condition. The

full report and methodology are available at:

More efficiency for concentrated solar

power plants

Renewable energy

has an important

contribution to make in

protecting the environment

and climate. Solar energy

plays a particularly significant

role here and has become

more widespread in recent

years due to photovoltaics.

However, this technology

does not yet offer an efficient

means of energy storage. An

alternative is concentrated

solar power (CSP) plants

with heat storage systems.

Heat is stored in molten salt

so that electricity can be

generated during the night

or in bad weather conditions.

Despite advancements in this

technology, the investment

costs in building a CSP plant

are still very high. Therefore,

it is all the more crucial to run

the power plants, including

the heat storage systems,

as efficiently, economically

and for as long as possible.

118

BASF has developed a new

software solution to help with

challenges in this area. The

tool focuses on the stability

of the storage medium

(i.e. the molten salt), which

includes the simulation of

gas emissions, equipment

corrosion and the estimation

of the plant life span.

BASF plays a key role in the

CSP industry: The German

chemical company produces

inorganic salts, which are

used as an energy storage

medium in concentrated

solar power plants. As such,

the company is one of the

suppliers of sodium nitrate

for Noor Energy 1 in Dubai

– the largest solar project to

date. As a producer of salts

for such a long time, BASF

has gained expertise through

intensive research and can

use this knowledge to support

the planning, construction

and operations of CSP plants.

“Over the last few years, BASF

has intensively examined

the chemical reactions and

equilibriums of molten salts

at high temperatures. We

have now incorporated this

knowledge in a software

solution so that we can

make it available to the CSP

industry,” said Christian

Schütz, research engineer

in process development at

BASF. “Thanks to our extensive

research, we have a very good

knowledge of salt chemistry at

temperatures of over 400°C.”

This has a significant meaning

especially for CSP tower

plants, which operate up to

565°C.

The high temperatures in CSP

plants are a challenge here:

The salt is heated to over

400 °C using concentrated

sunlight and then, when

needed, emits the thermal

energy again using a steam

generator. The advantage

of the high temperatures

is that the same volume

of salt can absorb more

energy, while the efficiency

of the cyclical process for

converting the steam into

electricity also increases

along with the temperature.

Basically, this means the

higher the temperature, the

more heat is stored, and the

more energy is generated.

“However, different reactions

in the salt become evident

above 400°C,” explained

Schütz. For instance, the

equilibrium of sodium nitrate

and sodium nitrite shifts, as

individual components of the

salt decompose at higher

temperatures, releasing

different types of gases. The

loss of gases translates into a

loss of salt. “This is especially

apparent the first time the

plant is heated up and the salt

melting process starts. This is

when the greatest mass loss

occurs for the plant operator.”.

If it is not prevented, this mass

loss must be compensated at

regular intervals.

The new simulation tool from

BASF allows mass loss to be

predicted and counteracted

by adjusting parameters such

as temperature or additives.

“We calculated this extremely

accurately using equations,”

commented Schütz, adding

that those equations are

derived from lab work of

the last 6 years. Tests were

conducted to establish how

the salt mixture behaves under

a wide range of temperature

and pressure conditions and

how the repeated heating

and cooling affects longterm

stability. These changes

that take place over the

long term, i.e. the “aging”

of the salt over a number of

years, can also be simulated

using the software. A further

function is the calculation

of the corrosion rate of the

power plant components, as

the salt reacts with metals at

high temperatures. As the

corrosion rate has a direct

influence on the life span of

the plant, the tool can also be

used to provide information on

the predicted life span of the

plant. As such, the tool offers

operators an overview of the

wear and efficiency of their

power plant with respect to the

salt cycle. There are default

parameters for each individual

module of the power plant,

which can each be adjusted

to the power plant in question.

“The aim of our simulation tool

is to control the stability of the

salt in such a way that they

run efficiently and for as long

as possible,” emphasized Erik

Wiegert, digital expert in the

Inorganics division at BASF.

The software is already

available as a fully functional

prototype. If there is sufficient

interest from the industry,

BASF aims to add more

functions to the program at

a later stage and also offer it

alongside its salt business. As

well as offering added value

in plants that are already up

and running, the tool can also

be used when designing new

power plants, added Erik

Wiegert: “We use the tool to

pass on our salt expertise to

operators.”

What to Look for When Hiring

Asian Security in for your

Engineering Project

The role of a security guard is to secure an

area for its customers by patrolling and

monitoring a site or facility. A guard will

assist in protecting businesses, schools, banks,

concerts or events, and other essential places.

You will see security guards or police security

hired to protect celebrities or high-profile

people to protect them from overzealous

fans. Businesses hire security guards to

ensure no one breaks into their secured

buildings. Security guards protect against

threats or robbery, and in some cases, have

supplemented as law enforcement.

If searching for security guard services, you

may not know what to look for in a security

company. There are lots of selections out there,

and you want to sure you are hiring the best

service for your business. Hiring the wrong

security service or guard can cause lots of

frustration and leave your business vulnerable

when you need to look for an alternative option.

Before hiring a security service, you need

to perform a self-evaluation of your specific

security concerns in the business that you

need addressed. Once you have completed

your self-evaluation, begin your search and

interviewing process. There are several things

you want to look for when hiring security.

122

Does the Security Have Experience

with Businesses Like Yours?

Security guards and security companies will

have different skillsets and experiences that

make them well suited for different types

of offices and environments. Most security

companies tend to hire the same kind of

security guard and do work for similar clients.

For example, a security service company that

typically is hired to protect bars and nightclubs

might employ a bar bounce or nighttime

security guard.

When evaluating a security service or guard

for your business, you want to make sure that

they have clients with other companies that are

similar in size, type, or industry to yours.

Is the Security Service Getting

Positive Reviews?

An excellent way to get an opinion on a

security service is through their current clients

and reviews. Don’t just consider the stars that

a company has in their review, take time to

read through the reviews. Remember that one

bad review isn’t necessarily a sign that the

company is terrible.

What are the Security Services Skills

& Qualifications?

When looking to hire a security guard or

security company, make sure that they

possess the following skills and qualifications:

surveillance skills, ability to lift, practice

proper judgment, able to deal with uncertainty,

objectivity, dependability, emotional control,

safety management, integrity, professionalism,

and reporting skills.

There are other essential things to

consider when looking at hiring a

security guard, such as:

Experience & Reputation – you want

a security guard that has experience. An

experienced security guard will have an

excellent reputation, and you want someone

with a good reputation and experience on the

job of protecting your company.

License & Insurance – when you are

convinced that a security guard has the

essential experience and reputation, you need

to make sure they are appropriately licensed

and insured. Good security firms and guards

insurance in place.

Service Variety – you want a security guard

with a diverse range of services that will cater

to your companies needs.

Response Time – if something terrible was to

happen at your company, you want to be sure

that the security guards and company hired will

respond as soon as a problem occurs. Also,

you want your security guard to be alert at all

times to their surroundings.

be relatively healthy and fit considering their

job. An out of shape guard might not be able to

perform the physicality of their role very well.

You want to hire a security guard that makes

on-going training a priority. You want a guard

that will know the ins and outs of your business

and is up to date on the industry’s procedures,

new training techniques, and any other

updates. A security guard that continually trains

and stays educated will be well engaged and

able to protect you or your business.

In Conclusion

Security companies need to use caution when

hiring mature and trustworthy guards to work

for their companies. The security service and

guards must be detail-oriented and able to

meet your security needs.
