art &collectionThe basic aim of the activity of the Museum of the City of Łódź, which stems both from the Act onMuseums and the Museum bylaw, is to collect, protect, make available and present goods that formpart of our natural and cultural heritage, both material and immaterial incharacter, especially those connected with different stages of development and history of the Cityof Łódź. Since its establishment on 30 October 1975 as the Museum of the History of Łódź, theinstitution has been working towards that aim with consistency and with enormous enthusiasm. Incase of the Museum of the City of Łódź, the collection has been built from scratch, the Museum didnot take over (as it has happened in case of other local museums) collections of other institutions.Since the time of its establishment, the Museum has been gathering objects, which both presentand document the city life and constitute products of the cultural and artistic milieu of Łódź.Photo: Mariusz Cieszewski / www.polska.pl
Currently, the collection of the Museum of the City of Łódź includes over 62 thousandexhibits and the number is growing successively. The collected objects, inscribed in themuseum inventory, are classified in a number of categories: iconographic, numismatic, ethnographic, and archeologic collections as well as collections of art industry, painting, sculpture, architecture and urban planning, music, literature, and separate collectionsrelated to the history of the City, both the oldest as well as the current one. The Museumof Sports and Tourism – Branch of the Museum of the City of Łódź has been gathering arich collection connected to the history of sport in Łódź.In case of the Museum of the City of Łódź, an important criterion that influences theacceptance of objects to the museum collection is the relation of a given object to our City, its history, people who lived in Łódź, both the ‘ordinary’ citizens of Łódź, who did not standout among thousands of other citizens with their everyday life and work, as well as thedistinguished ones, who contributed to rendering Łódź famous, also on the internationalarena, with their life, work and creative output. A very important part of the Museum’scollection is formed by works and mementos of creators that either came from Łódź orwere active here, both those that lived in late 19th century and the contemporary ones.Photo: Mariusz Cieszewski / www.polska.plIn the Museum’s repertory there are also furniture sets, lamps and chandeliers, objects thatconstituted elements of interior furnishings, including numerous charming products of theart industry. The Museum owns interesting collections of paintings, posters and engravingsas well as sculptures. The Museum’s inventory includes multiple photographs that presentŁódź: the city’s architecture and its citizens, important events: cultural, social and politicalones. The Museum owns an interesting collection of 19th-century portrait photographs, numerous tableaux, a collection of postcards and advertising vignettes. The historicalcollection that documents the history of Łódź is very extensive and it includes documents, ephemera, correspondence, posters, bills of exchange and old coins, numerous decorationsand medals. An important place in the collection of the Museum of the City of Łódź,depicting the life of the citizens of old, is taken also by objects connected with the religiouslife. Łódź at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was a multicultural andmultidenominational city and that is why in the repertory of the Museum there are Judaicaas well as objects connected with the catholic, evangelical and Orthodox traditions. TheMuseum of the City of Łódź has its seat in the most stately palace among all the palacesthat formerly belonged to the factory owners of Łódź: the Palace of Izrael Poznański. Thisrepresentative dwelling, which was extended in several stages, is one of the most preciousmonuments of the historical heritage of Łódź; together with the surrounding factory andhousing compound it is an example of the industrial Łódź of late 19th and early 20thcentury. Over the years, the Museum has put a lot of effort into restoring the formerglamour and splendour to the Palace and its interiors. The carefully renovated palace interiors, equipped withfurniture, works of art and objects of everyday usefrom the Museum’s collection, constitute a testimonyof the times of glory of the industrial empire of thePoznański Family and bring us closer to the times andway of life of typical Lodzermenschen. In the vastspaces of the palace, exhibitions that form part of thePantheon of Great Citizens of Łódź were alsoarranged. Among them there are studies of: MarekEdelman, Alexandre Tansman, Julian Tuwim, Jan Karskiand Karl Dedecius. In the Museum there functionsArthur Rubinstein’s Music Gallery, which is anexposition where important and interesting objectsconnected with Arthur Rubinstein, donated to theMuseum after the outstanding pianist’s death, weremade available to the public. In the studies of theGreat Citizens of Łódź we present objects of everydayuse, but also the ones related to the work theyperformed, which formerly belonged to famouscitizens of Łódź, as well as numerous awards andvaluable decorations. In the collection of the Museumof the City of Łódź connected with the Great Citizensof Łódź there are, among other things, interestingiconographic objects, posters, very first editions offamous works, and letters. It is in the Museum of theCity of Łódź, in the Pantheon of Great Citizens ofŁódź, where you can admire, among other things, theonly Oscar statue in Łódź, which was awarded toArthur Rubinstein by the American Motion PictureAcademy, Julian Tuwim’s pen or the desk at which KarlDedecius worked. The Museum of Sports and Tourism,Branch of the Museum of the City of Łódź, owns richcollections as well, which comprise over 26 thousandobjects: awards and statues, old coins, archivalmaterials, iconographies and sports equipmentconnected with the sport of Łódź, especially withsportspeople who over the years have put a lot ofeffort into its development.
