Marcin: People live very simply here. There is no suchcommercialism as in other regions, nor mass tourism. I thinkthese are not places for someone who wants to come and partyfor a few days, forgetting about everything. Many, also foreigntourists, come to visit the Wooden Architecture Trail and I haveexperienced a lot of openness and kindness of church caretakers. When visiting Beskid Niski, or Pogórze Cieżkowickie, you look formore peace and quiet. Many beautiful untrampled trails, theLemko cultural heritage, the art of wooden architecture andstonework, abandoned churches, cemeteries, crosses among hills, and forests. A simple stone cross or a chapel with an unusualhistory, situated by a picturesque road, when the sun is rising onthe horizon and fog is rolling, and there is silence all around, youalmost feel God's presence in these places created by the faithof the ancestors. It is also an extraordinary experience to get toknow the war cemeteries of World War I.After the bloody Battle of Gorlice, the emperor promised everysoldier a worthy burial. That's why they are located in the mostbeautiful places, on the hills above the villages. They were builtby the best architects, including Dusan Jurkovic, who usedelements of local culture. In these cemeteries, everyone, nomatter whether a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian or Russianarmies, were buried with equal respect. This respect, even forthe enemy, is very meaningful. Death unites and reconciles theopponents. It is worth visiting Rotunda, Wzgórze Pustki,Staszkówka, Lichwin, Ołpiny, Grab, Beskidek, and Sękowa- thoseare only some of the beautifully situated war cemeteries.lovePoland: If these are your "homelands", where would youinvite tourists who want to get to know this somewhat sleepypart of our country? In a short conversation, before this text waswritten, you mentioned Biecz (I hope we will come back to thistopic again), where else?Marcin: If you want to experience the atmosphere of a Galiciantown, you must visit Biecz. It is probably the most photogenictown I know, situated on a hill above the Ropa River, withpreserved medieval towers and walls, a beautiful collegiatechurch, market square, and executioner's tower. The history ofthe city is also fascinating, especially in its heyday, with the greatmerits of Bishop Marcin Kromer. Nearby, in the vicinity of myparish of Szerzyny,I recommend four beautiful wooden churches: St. Martin's inCzermna, St. Anna's in Święcany, St. Michael the Archangel's inBinarowa, and St.John the Baptist's in Rzepiennik Biskupi. Not faraway, on the top of Liwocz, there is a chapel of Our Lady Queenof Peace with a viewing platform. There are also many historicchapels and crosses in the area, many of which are posted on myFacebook page Kościoły z nieba (Churches from Heaven).have an additional comment, sometimes a fragment from theHoly Bible. It is definitely not accidental – what is crucial aboutthem? You talk about light a lot and I don't think you mean justthe right sunlight, do you?Marcin: It's like in life- we can show someone in an ugly light anda bad perspective and then it is better not to show at all. But wecan also show it in a beautiful light. As a priest, I try not only to show the world in nice light in thephotographs, but also to lead to this Light that gives meaning toeverything that surrounds us. This is also the meaning of sacredarchitecture, to lead to God. That’s why I describe my photos, writing about what I experienced while taking them, using theHoly Bible or holy texts.lovePoland: I also know that you are quite actively involved inthe promotion of the region. You participated in photoexhibitions and you have organised a photo competition foryoung people. In which direction do you want to develop yourphotographic passion?Marcin: I also teach at school and I can see how important it isfor children and teenagers to have some hobbies and passions, especially now when people isolate themselves from oneanother. Photographing both the beauty of nature and sacredart helps to develop both physically (because you have to go tothe top of a mountain, for example), mentally (self-esteem,gaining skills, and knowledge), and spiritually throughcommuning with the sacred prayers. Hence, the photo contests.I am also happy to share my knowledge about the technique orplaces I visit. I would like to do it as a passion that gives me a lotof joy and satisfaction, opens me up to the people I meet, and atthe same time attracts young people to do something that maynot give them any material benefit at once, but will strengthenthem physically, mentally, and spiritually.Marcin GadeklovePoland: Coming back to your photos – what are they for you?Browsing through them on your profile, I noticed that they often56 TRAVEL.LOVEPOLAND
