Helping budding surfers D H I to hang 10
• By Samantha Mythen
MAKING SURFING accessible
for everyone is the aim of a new
project starting in Sumner.
The Goat Shed is an
initiative led by friends Lucas
Sampaio and Carlos Alonso.
They are beginning to build
surfboards, with the goal of
creating a surfboard lending
library.
The project combines Sampaio
and Alonso’s passion for
surfing, art, creativity, design
and engineering.
When the Government announced
the country would be
going into lockdown last year,
Alonso bought all the materials
he would need to be able to
make a surfboard.
He knew it was likely that
surfing would not be permitted
but still wanted to connect with
surfing in some way, having
engaged with the sport since he
was six-years-old.
Sampaio also bought supplies
to try and shape a surfboard
from scratch, something he had
never done before.
After the lockdown, the two
formed a team.
“Then we had an idea
thinking it would be cool if we
could make more surfboards.
But we thought, we cannot try
out and use all of the boards
we make ourselves, and where
would they all go anyway,”
Sampaio said.
damage fear
• By Samantha Mythen
THE BANKS Peninsula
community has banded together
to speak out against the upcoming
removal of pine trees on Moepuku
Peninsula.
They fear the removal will result
in high levels of sedimentation
entering Lyttelton harbour,
which will adversely affect the sea
environment.
Charteris Bay Residents
Association chairman, Mike
Pearson, alongside the Diamond
Harbour Community Association,
has approached the city council
and Environment Canterbury on
behalf of those concerned.
Pearson said he understood the
trees were originally planted by a
former owner of the land Patrick
Cotter to stabilise the ground soil,
not for forestry.
The peninsula has 5km of sea
to land borders with access to 12
beaches.
Of the peninsula’s 68.88ha,
50ha is planted with pinus radiata,
which were planted between 1981
and 1985.
He believes the planting of
the trees was authorised by the
now amalgamated Mt Herbert
County Council, approving it as
a soil conservation forest. This
was confirmed by David Collins,
a former chairman of the county
council.
Said Pearson:
“Our view is, if
the pines have
not been planted
for forestry but
for soil stabilisation,
that’s what
it should be there
for.”
Pearson said
Pearson
the original planting was not for
commercial purposes and yet it
is now going to be commercially
logged.
“This would be ultra vires with
respect to the Resource Management
Act.”
When submitting their letter
to ECan, Pearson also attached
a legal opinion, which states
the harvesting should not commence
prior to consents under
subsection 13-15 of the RMA
being obtained.
These subsections relate to
restrictions on use of riverbeds
and coastal water and discharge
of contaminants into an environment.
ECan told Bay Harbour News
its legal team will respond to the
letter this week.
The associations have consistently
run community clean-ups
and ensure residents are aware
of planting to prevent sedimentation.
“We have always been supportive
of Healthy Harbour
work and have seen much improvement
in water quality over
the years. We do not want this
all to be in vane,” Pearson said.
The area adjacent to the peninsula
at the head of Charteris Bay
is a breeding area for rig shark.
The harbour is also a habitat and
exploring ground for hectors
dolphin, flounder, stingrays and
orca.
“When the sedimentation enters
the harbour, all of this will
be severely impacted,” Pearson
said.
The group has questioned the
sedimentation plan in place,
stating it is not robust enough.
Its concerns relate to whether
any sedimentation controls will
be put in place and how the sedimentation
will be monitored.
It has also asked about a
mitigation plan for the effects
of future landslides into the
harbour as a result of the pines
being removed.
Representatives discussed
these concerns at the Banks
Peninsula Community Board
meeting last Monday.
As a result, the board will
write to ECan on behalf of the
community, sharing its concerns.
“We need to make sure ECan
has controls in place and procedure
is being followed,” board
chairwoman Tori Peden said.
“I understand the
communities fear that their
healthy harbour will be
jeopardised.”
ECan Banks Peninsula Zone
lead Gillian Jenkins said the
logging is a permitted activity
and they will be monitoring the
harvest to ensure provisions
under the National Environmental
Standards for Plantation
Forestry are met.
Said Pearson: “We are really
proud of our harbour and want
it to be protected.”
Gulf Wars
How We Kept The Cup
by richard Gladwell
Gulf Wars is a pictorially driven celebration of Emirates Team New Zealand’s
America’s Cup win in Auckland 2021, written from an on the water perspective
by one of the world’s most influential America’s Cup photo-journalists,
Richard Gladwell.
Richard Gladwell is an international sailing journalist and photographer who
lives in New Zealand. He began sailing when he was ten years old and first
wrote about the America’s Cup five years later. A Kiwi representative sailor,
he competed internationally in dinghies and keelboats for 12 years, sailing
with and against some of the current senior members of Emirates Team New
Zealand. He has covered the America’s Cup and Team New Zealand in its
various renditions for the past 35 years.
Between Five Eyes
50 years of Intelligence Sharing
by Anthony r. Wells
UK/US intelligence and the wider Five Eyes community of Canada, Australia and New
Zealand is primarily about one main thing: Relationships. In this remarkable book,
Anthony Wells charts fifty years of change, turmoil, intense challenges, successes and
failures, and never-ending abiding Five Eyes relationships. He traces the development
of institutions that he firmly believes have sustained, and indeed may have saved,
Western democracies and their allies from those ill disposed to the value system and
culture of our nations. More than a chronology of the UK/US intelligence community
during this fifty-year period, it is also a personal insight into key relationships and the
abiding strength of the United States and the United Kingdom and its Five Eyes allies
relationships. The author is the only living person to have worked for British Intelligence
as a British citizen and US Intelligence as a US citizen. He was a fully trained and
accredited security officer for two US intelligence organizations, and used his own
extensive unclassified collection of papers, personal notes and diaries, as well as his
family library for source material to create this book.
A Nurse’s Story
by Louise Curtis with Sarah Johnson
Moving, honest and inspiring – this is a nurse’s true story of life in a busy A&E department
during the Covid-19 crisis.
Working in A&E is a challenging job but nurse Louise Curtis loves it. She was newly
qualified as an advanced clinical practitioner, responsible for life or death decisions
about the patients she saw, when the unthinkable happened and the country was hit by
the Covid-19 pandemic. The stress on the NHS was huge and for the first time in her
life, the job was going to take a toll on Louise herself.
In A Nurse’s Story she describes what happened next, as the trickle of Covid patients
became a flood. And just as tragically, staff in A&E were faced with the effects of lockdown
on society. They worried about their regulars, now missing, and saw an increase in
domestic abuse victims and suicide attempts as loneliness hit people hard. By turns
heartbreaking and heartwarming, this book shines a light on the compassion and
dedication of hospital staff during such dark times.
The Auschwitz Photographer
allegiance to Hitler and join the Wehrmacht. He refused. He was deported to Auschwitz
concentration camp as political prisoner number 3444. A trained portrait photographer,
he was ordered by the SS to record the inner workings of the camp. He began by taking
identification photographs of the prisoners as they entered the camp, went on to capture
the criminal medical experiments of Josef Mengele, and also recorded executions.
Between 1940 and 1945, Brasse took around 50,000 photographs of the horror around
him. He took them because he had no choice.
Eventually, Brasse’s conscience wouldn’t allow him to hide behind his camera. First he risked
his life by joining the camp’s Resistance movement, faking documents for prisoners, trying
to smuggle images to the outside world to reveal what was happening. Then, when Soviet
troops finally advanced on the camp to liberate it, Brasse refused SS orders to destroy his
photographs. ‘Because the world must know,’ he said.
Crusade On!
Celebrating 25 years Of The Crusaders
By Matt McIlraith
The Crusaders are not just another sports team. Out of a modest beginning grew the
most formidable professional club entity rugby has ever seen. Yet sustained on-field
excellence is just part of the story of a team that succeeded by living its stated ethos of
hard work, the embracement of diversity, and a commitment to represent its people with
pride and humility. Join the crusade as Matt McILraith takes you inside the club’s first
25-years, dissecting the key moments, the successes and the rare failures, complete with
season analysis, biographies of all 245 players, and the five head coaches, as well as
statistics from all 370 games the team played. A 360-degree portrait, Crusade On also
introduces some of the larger-than-life personalities, from within the team and off the
field, all of whom helped to make the Crusaders what they are. The way the Crusaders
accomplished their success, with no one person more important than any other, and
the enduring culture they created to sustain it, is an example of continued achievement
that is as relevant for the boardroom as it is for the sporting arena. On-going success in
any pursuit is not achieved by accident. This is why the Crusaders’ story is so important.
Approval given to
progress wharf upgrade
• By Samantha Mythen
THE DIAMOND Harbour
Wharf upgrade project has been
given approval to progress to the
next stage.
Last Thursday, the city
council’s Transport and Urban
Development Committee made
the decision allowing the project
to move ahead to the detailed
design phase.
This phase will allow for detailed
cost estimates.
Banks Peninsula councillor
and Deputy Mayor Andrew
Turner said preliminary
estimates during the concept
development have indicated the
project will be delivered within
the existing budget.
After the design phase has
been completed, a contractor for
construction will be procured
and then construction on the
wharf will begin.
Said Turner: “After some time
in the planning it is great to
see this much needed upgrade
happening. This is a significant
improvement to accessibility and
public safety – great news for the
community and for ferry users.”
Said Diamond Harbour Community
Association chairman
Nathan Graham: “The association
is very happy that the wharf
will be more accessible to those
with young children, the elderly
and others who struggle with
accessibility.”
A time line on how the project
will commence is yet to be
released.
• From page 1
“I’ve always wanted to be
involved in the community and
then we came up with the idea
for the library of boards, and
lending them out to the community.”
Said Alonso: “We realised this
was something we wanted to
keep doing. We are enjoying the
process and pushing each other.
It’s hard work but trying out the
boards makes it all worth it.”
The idea is that people will be
able to borrow a surfboard for a
koha.
“People can’t always afford a
board, plus the library would
mean people can try out and
experiment with different styles
of boards,” Sampaio said.
Alonso explained they had
brainstormed the idea that if
people liked a surfboard they
tried, they could then buy the
board for a low cost price covering
the materials for the board
and the materials for another
board to then be made for the
library.
“It’s not just about us making
the boards, but we want it to be a
community initiative. We would
love for people to provide feedback
on the boards too,” said Alonso.
The Sumner Hub is home to
The Goat Shed team. They have
set up their workshop in a converted
garage, built specifically
by and for the team.
Lucas
Sampaio
board.
Initiative to benefit community
It is a non-profitable project,
and the two men are currently
spending mostly their own money
and time to fund the venture.
The project is in its early stages
and they are currently shaping
their first few surfboards.
In the meantime, they are thinking
of offering to repair boards
to bring in more income to help
develop the project further.
Said Sampaio: “We want people
to believe in us and to do that
we have to show we are doing
something. We want to show
this is a project which is up and
running.”
THIS YEAR’S Single Fin Mingle
event for women features 33
longboarders.
The high number of entries
compares well to the 48 who have
entered the men’s event.
Event founder Ambrose
McNeil said: “There are some
amazing female surfers and we
want to support them and ensure
women’s surfing will keep being
increasingly promoted.”
The event always awards equal
prize money for both the male
and female surfing categories.
This happened even before
the World Surf League started
to offer equal prize money to its
female competitors in 2019.
Several Sumner women will
be competing including Brittany
Andrews and Lili Bay.
Andrews has been surfing for
most of her life, thanks to her
dad.
“He has surfed for 40-plus
years, so being his only child I
had no choice,” she said.
“The first time I went surfing
was in a competition when I was
super young, he just entered me
in it for a laugh I think.”
She began to specialise in longboarding
with again motivation
from her dad, the longboarding
community and the Mingle
crew.
“For me longboarding is quite
relaxing . . . being able to cruise
along the waves brings a big
sense of calm and connection to
the ocean,” said Andrews.
The Mingle is Andrews’ favourite
event of the year.
“Everyone is supported and
welcomed no matter if you surf
or not. The inclusion of everyone
and love shown makes it so
special.”
Bay has competed in the event
since its beginnings in 2014.
“It’s always awesome to surf in
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
the competition and it has been
incredible seeing it grow over
the years with the whole Sumner
community getting involved,”
she said.
“I watch in awe as it unfolds.
The competition is always the
small part, the biggest and best
part is having fun with friends.”
Bay moved to New Zealand
with her family from Germany
when she was 13. The first thing
her family did was try surfing.
Andrews
longboarding
talent.
The longboarding community
and its surf has inspired Bay’s
own interest in the style.
“The beauty about longboarding
is that it is a completely even
playing field between men and
women as it is about grace and
style more than force and energy,”
she said.
“Many of my friends are beautiful
longboarders and everyone
has a different aesthetic and style
that they bring into their surfing
Longboard competition attracts 33 women
that can’t be compared with each
other.”
Surfing New Zealand general
manager Ben Kennings said: “I
think a lot of females love the
longboard and can enjoy it whatever
the wave. It offers a lot more
opportunities to get in the water.”
Both Andrews and Bay love
the surfing community, especially
the women who make up a
large portion of it.
“I feel lucky for this community.
I am grateful that so many
women here are into it. I know
other wahine around Aotearoa
don’t have the same sense of
community we experience here,
again we have events like the
Mingle to thank for that, there is
always a big turnout of women
longboarders that come which
creates a bigger sense of community
and empowerment for
women,” Andrews said.
Bay explained she had never
felt a disadvantage as a woman
surfing in Sumner but had heard
about struggles of other female
friends in places around the
country.
“I feel really lucky. I’ve never
felt out of place,” she said.
“It’s cool to see so many girls
surfing in Sumner, especially
seeing the increase over the last
few years.”
Celebrating surfing, music and culture
• By Samantha Mythen
CELEBRATION TIME: The Single Fin Mingle festival starts
on Thursday with two musical events planned for the
weekend featuring Kiwi talent There’s a Tuesday and Jed
Parsons.
SINGLE FIN Mingle founder
Ambrose McNeil is quarantining
in managed isolation before
heading to Sumner, to run the
longboard surfing event.
The four-day festival celebrates
a love of longboarding which
will run from Thursday to
Sunday this week and is in its
seventh year.
McNeil is most looking forward
to seeing the community
come together to celebrate and
have a good time at the Mingle.
“It is pretty special to be able
to bring friends from around the
country and the Sumner community
together to participate in
the competition plus do all the
fun things.”
Sumner is the best place to run
the event, McNeil said.
Although the waves are not always
the greatest, the enthusiasm
from the community makes the
event so special.
“The community there are
so supportive and tight-knit.
There are great venues, a beautiful
theatre, amazing bars and
restaurants, surf clubs. The local
businesses really get behind the
event,” McNeil said.
The biggest hurdle for this
year’s Mingle for McNeil has
been actually getting back to
Sumner, having lived in Australia
for the past five years.
“It was touch and go for a
while there,” McNeil said, booking
a spot in managed isolation
proving to be quite difficult.
He is only allowed to leave isolation
the day before the event starts.
The core of the event is the
longboarding competition.
Although the competition is
divided by gender, there are no
age categories, with the youngest
competing 14 and the oldest in
their 60s.
“What makes longboarding
special is that is spans a full age
and gender divide, we can all
chat about the same thing, no
matter your background.”
It is an invitational festival
meaning you have to be invited
to participate.
McNeil said: “The idea behind
this was to make it prestigious
so we can showcase world-class
longboarders.”
McNeil and a few others across
New Zealand scout out potential
participants at surfing competitions,
look for people who stand
out at local beaches and find
others through word of mouth.
But it is not meant to be an
exclusive event.
“Half of it is how good you are;
the talented longboarders who
put effort into perfecting the fine
art of this traditional style of
surfing,” McNeil explained.
“The other part of the criteria
is just being a cool, laid-back,
good person.”
The event has developed in
many different ways each year.
In the early days of the Mingle,
its biggest party held 100 people
at a local venue.
This year, it is building its own
venue in the Sumner Village
Mall which can hold 800.
The event has also extended an
extra day and night with more
going on throughout the days.
There are two musical soirees
showcasing local musicians such
as There’s a Tuesday; a film gala
of surf cinematics, and an art
show at LEstrange Gallery.
The ‘Wonderful Warm Up” gig
including Two Minds from Mt
Pleasant was held on Saturday.
A special part of the event
will be the sale of Abrahands
stickers, available for a donation.
The donations will go towards
an alternative mental health
therapy, in memory of McNeil’s
brother Abraham McNeil who
committed suicide in 2019.
“We want to keep the conversation
around mental health
going,” McNeil said.
The Mingle has caught the
attention of an international
audience too.
In 2019, more than 50 surfers
from around the world competed
in the Sumner surf and more
than 100 other internationals
attended the festival.
“I’m blown away every year by
how the festival is growing. It’s
not about getting bigger but it’s
about trying new things to make
the experience better.
“Our goal has always been to
make this the best weekend of
the year,” McNeil said.
COMMUNITY groups are
taking the lead on a new
trapping initiative in the Port
Hills to help with predator
control.
The city council is working
alongside community groups
in Purau Reserve, Birdsey
Reserve, Barnett Park and
Giants Nose Reserve.
It will be a six-month project
to investigate how trapping
can be safely supported in the
smaller community reserves.
This is a part of the city
council’s commitment to
make the Port Hills and Banks
Peninsula pest-free by 2050.
City council community
parks manager Al Hardy said
a training workshop was conducted
at the end of last year,
equipping volunteers with the
necessary skills needed to set
and monitor traps.
Many of those involved in
this project have already been
trapping in the reserves for
some time.
Said Hardy: “Other community
groups are new to
trapping but have been doing
planting and maintenance
work in their local park. They
see trapping as the next step
towards restoring urban biodiversity.”
Community group Friends
of Purau Reserve has been
working over the past few
years to weed and then replant
the reserve with indigenous
vegetation.
After discovering hedgehogs,
mice and rats in
the reserve, they are now
implementing a trapping
programme as part of this
Community helps with predator trapping
initiative.
Since first setting traps at
the beginning of March, they
have already caught four rats.
Said Purau Reserve volunteers
co-ordinator Bronwyn
McLennan: “I got involved because
we need a habitat bridge
or link between the city and
Banks Peninsula for our native
species, especially our birds,
to be safe and proliferate. It’s
possible that if we actively trap
predators in our cities that we
could create a haven for our
wildlife.”
Fire station set to be demolished
Sumner
Volunteer
Fire
Brigade
chief fire
officer
Daryl
Sayer provides
an update on the
volunteer team
OVER MARCH 27-29,
the Sumner Volunteer Fire
Brigade moved into temporary
premises on Wakefield Ave.
This marks the next phase
of the rebuild of the existing
station in Wiggins St, which
suffered extensive, although
not crippling, damage in the
2011 earthquakes.
Temporary premises,
including a two-vehicle
appliance bay, offices and
a training room have been
constructed on the former site
of the Sumner gasworks, on
the corner of Truro St.
Demolition of the old
station will take place in the
THE MEETING to discuss the
establishment of a community
garden in Diamond Harbour
last Tuesday confirmed the
NEW BUILD: The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade building will soon be demolished
and another facility will be built on the Wiggins St site.
next couple of weeks before
construction of the new
station begins.
The new station will be built
on the Wiggins St site, but
will also take in the section on
the corner of Wakefield Ave,
resulting in a larger footprint
for the station.
The station will have a
two-vehicle appliance bay,
office space and a meeting and
training room in a purposebuilt
modern facility.
Locals should be aware
that during the build process
the normal fire siren will
not be operating, but will
be reinstated when the new
station is operational.
The siren acts as an
additional means of
alerting the members –
pagers are not 100 per cent
reliable, particularly in the
hill-lined locality of the
Sumner valley.
The siren has been
reported to be a comfort
to those nearby who have
requested the brigade’s
assistance as it assures them
that their call for help has
been heard.
Sumner Fire Brigade
has operated in the local
community for 127 years,
and is entirely staffed by
volunteers.
Recruiting is currently
aimed at people who are
available to respond during
working hours.
If you wish to inquire about
joining and are available
during the week, phone chief
fire officer Daryl Sayer on 027
229 2402.
Interest grows in Diamond Harbour community garden
desire for the project.
Potential sites and reasons
for the garden were discussed.
THe next steps will be
to form a management
committee that then put
forward a project proposal to
the city council.
Hill dwellers need to be vigilant with water
In April, the
Redcliffs/
Te Rae Kura
Eco Village
Group will
be focusing
on water.
Co-ordinator
Dave Bryce discusses
water seepage on Banks
Peninsula
IF YOU LIVE on the hills and
have a problem with water
seepage and clay, you are not
alone.
The hills of Banks Peninsula
have varying amounts of a clay
material called loess on them.
This came as wind-blown dust
from the retreating glaciers in
the various “Ice Ages”.
It is comprised of tiny particles
which become suspended in
water, making it cloudy, like the
waters of glacial lakes such as
Lake Tekapo.
When the hills were covered
in native forest, rain water
dripped lightly from the leaves
The Avon-
Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai
Trust is a
non-profit
organisation
formed
to protect
one of New
Zealand’s most important
coastal wetlands. Each
week, board members will
discuss matters regarding
the estuary, its rich history
and what makes it unique.
This week Bill Simpson
writes about the influential
Peacock family
ONE OF THE mementoes of
the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch
earthquakes is the large mass
of netting on the cliff face
protecting the road at Clifton
Beach on the way to Sumner.
This area has had various
names – Shag Rock Reserve,
Clifton Beach and Peacocks
Gallop.
and soaked slowly through the
leaf litter into the soil.
Much of it was absorbed
by plant roots, but some
emerged in streams keeping
them flowing constantly
throughout the year (with
minor fluctuations). This clean
water supported ecosystems
including water plants, mussels,
invertebrates, koura, inanga,
kokopu and eels.
Since the removal of native
forests from the Port Hills, rainwater
pounds the grass and soil,
taking up chemical residues,
some water running down on
the surface, some soaking quickly
into the soil.
Some of this water triggers
downhill soil creep, and some
washes out loess underground,
collapsing the soil above it as
“under-runners”.
This water quickly discharges
into streams, depositing sediment,
smothering water plants,
degrading ecosystems, causing
major fluctuations in stream
water flows (from torrents to
prolonged dry spells).
The result is much faster
erosion of the hills than before,
and much more sedimentation
of streams, rivers, estuaries,
harbour beds and the ocean.
Many ecosystems across the
Peninsula cannot adapt to such
erosion, and many roads, houses
or other buildings may also be
at risk.
Hill dwellers need to be
vigilant – water gardens by
timers or by hand (and no
more than necessary); make
sure downpipes discharge
to roadsides, city council
stormwater pipes or appropriate
on-site storage tanks; wash
cars in water-recycling “carwashes”
or on lawns, but not
on driveways; never allow
water or soil to cross your
boundaries; never excavate or
fill land without appropriate
advice or city council
approval; never allow paint or
other contaminants to enter
stormwater; always check that
taps are off and not leaking.
The Peacocks, father and son,
were influential businessmen in
the early days of Christchurch.
John Jenkins Peacock (1798–
1868) from Sydney owned several
ships which traded around
New Zealand’s coastal towns in
the 1840 and 1850s.
He was known as a hard-worker
and would think nothing of
wading into the Lyttelton harbour
in all weathers to load sacks
of potatoes onto his brig.
But he must have tired of that
because in 1857 he built the harbour’s
second jetty. It was known
initially as Peacock’s Wharf but
with enlargements and improvements
it later became known as
“No 7 Wharf.”
His son, Hon John Thomas
Peacock, (1827–1905) is probably
best known today as the donor of
funds for the Peacock Fountain
in the Botanic Gardens.
He was born in Sydney but
arrived in Christchurch in
1844 with his parents. John
Thomas was a businessman
and politician. He was also a
philanthropist, most notably
through his generous support
of the Christchurch Beautifying
Association.
He was also the member of
Parliament for Lyttelton from
1868 to 1873, and then appointed
to the Legislative Council from
1873 to his death in 1905.
He also found time to be the
first mayor of St Albans from
1881.
Prominent on the Tramways
Board he made an impassioned
plea in 1905 for widening the
road to Sumner so that traffic
would be protected from rocks
falling off Clifton.
“In the old days I used to
gallop along that bit of road
in order to get over it as fast as
possible, and it used to be called
‘Peacock’s Gallop,’” he told The
Press on January 13, 1905.
He would have been an
enthusiastic admirer of the
netting there today.
A message from the Board
To finally be able to reveal the plans for the new building is something we are all
incredibly excited about. When Archbishop Paul Martin, was appointed as Bishop
of Christchurch, he promised us he would make the rebuild of Marian College a
priority, and he was true to his word. Although it has taken somewhat longer than
originally planned, we think it has been worth the wait!
NCEA 2020 results
In the words of Mother Teresa “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I
cannot. Together we can do great things.” This could not be truer in the design
and planning of the new look Marian College. There have been so many people
involved in this project, from the students, staff and school community to the
professionals, who can do the things we cannot, it truly is a team effort.
On behalf of the Board, I would like to acknowledge the incredible work of the
Architects, Sheppard and Rout, and the Diocesan project management team, who
have listened and share our excitement about this build. They have all worked
hard to ensure the Catholic Special Character of Marian College is maintained in
a design which is quite unique. I’d also like to acknowledge the Marian College
Senior Leadership Team who have ensured the new school build meets the needs
of the staff and students for the future.
The significance of this new build project cannot be underestimated and as a
Board we feel very privileged to be a part of this. We look forward to working
alongside the team to ensure Marian College continues to thrive in the future.
Huge load space in Hyundai Santa Fe
MY SON recently purchased
a new television, a giant 65in
model.
The key question I asked
the salesperson at the time of
purchase was: “Would I be able
to transport it home in a sport
utility vehicle?’’ He answered yes,
if it was a big wagon.
Well, I was driving one of the
biggest mainstream SUVs in the
market – Hyundai’s new Santa
Fe – and although it was a bit of a
squeeze we did manage to get the
new TV home.
That’s one of the benefits of
the modern SUV concept, they
are adaptable with a multitude
of uses, and the new Santa Fe
Limited with its 2.2-litre diesel
engine is a class act. Well, I guess
it needs to be, at almost $90k it is
an SUV that commands a serious
financial outlay.
Of course, there are other model
options – seven variants make
up the new range which starts at
$62,990 for a 2.5-litre four-cylinder
petrol model, and there’s also
a V6 petrol in the line-up.
The new Santa Fe is exactly
that, it is an all-new shape and
sits on an all-new platform, what’s
more it gets a new diesel engine,
and while the cubic capacity is
much the same as the previous
generation model, it’s an all-aluminium
unit which is smooth,
quieter, more powerful and
efficient than before.
CAPABLE: Up to 1625-litres of cargo can be transported
beneath the Santa Fe’s tailgate.
HYUNDAI SANTA FE LIMITED: Plush, luxury SUV with a choice of engines.
The Limited model gets the
new diesel, although, as mentioned,
you can get it with petrol
power as well, but the V6 Limited
doesn’t have drive to all four
wheels.
That aside, the four-cylinder
turbocharged diesel is rated at
148kW (3800rpm) with 440Nm
of torque available from 1750rpm
to 2750rpm.
Not only are these outputs
impressive in terms of flexibility
and outright grunt, it is one of
the smoothest oil burners you are
ever likely to find in a vehicle of
this type.
It is hooked to a recently-developed
eight-speed dual clutch automatic
transmission, something
that is shared with Hyundai’s
partnership with Kia. Interaction
between the engine and gearbox
is smooth and seamless, and the
gear ratios are structured so that
they work efficiently with the
engine’s power and torque bands,
especially so the mid-range rev
spread.
In this form, the Santa Fe is relatively
quick for a vehicle which
weighs in at almost two-tonne.
According to my stopwatch it will
make 100km/h from a standstill
in under 9sec.
As you would expect in the
new-age SUV, the Santa Fe
is fitted with the latest drive
technologies, it has all-corner
propulsion which can be activated
by the driver at the turn of a
dial through a complex series of
modes and functions. Because of
the driveline mechanicals there is
a lot of suspension complexity.
Mostly, though, there is feel
and grip that the driver can use
with confidence and reassurance.
The ride is also quiet, and a lot
of that has to do with the quality
of the tyres – the big Continental
rubber (255/45 x 20in) has a firm
road feel and transports messages
to the steering wheel in a solid,
communicative way.
The Santa Fe is a fine touring
vehicle, and after years of development
the ride/handling balance
is as good as you would get in any
SUV, least of all one that sits in
the large luxury segment.
I presented the evaluation car
with a tight set of corners between
Darfield and Burnham, the
Santa Fe leans a little bit, but such
are the spring and damper rates
body movement isn’t excessive
and the occupants shouldn’t be
disappointed with the in-cabin
comfort levels.
Add in a vehicle that weighs in
at around 1900kg, there is a lot
of vehicle to get through a tight
corner, yet it does so with dignity
and purpose.
That’s one of the reasons why
SUVs have become so popular,
they perform admirably and,
in the Santa Fe’s case, it is also a
plush luxury car which impresses
• Price – Hyundai Santa Fe
Limited, $89,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4785mm; width, 1900mm;
height, 1710mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2151cc, 148kW, 440Nm,
eight-speed automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8.9sec
• Fuel usage – 7.5l/100km
with its refinement.
Major items of specification include
full leather trim with electrically
adjustable seats up front
(also heated). There is head-up
display, paddle-shift gear selectors
and new display graphics which
change face when the indicator
stalk is activated, side views of the
vehicle give the driver clear vision
of what is happening outside.
Also, it must be mentioned the
Limited model also gets remote
starting and movement, should
the driver’s door be hard to access,
such as a tight car park, the
vehicle can be driven forward or
reversed using the remote key.
Hyundai has upped the ante in
terms of fuel use. The Santa Fe
returned some interesting fuel usage
information during my time
with the test car. At 100km/h
in top gear the big diesel sips
fuel instantaneously at around
4.5-litres per 100km, turning over
at just 1600rpm. A test average of
7l/100km is respectable for vehicle
weight, and compares well to
Hyundai’s combined cycle claim
of 6.1l/100km.
Although the television wasn’t
heavy, it was bulky and claimed a
fair hunk of space made easy by
the clever seat folding system. In
terms of figures, the load area can
claim up to 547-litres, 1625-litres
with the rear second row of
seats folded. Yes, the Santa Fe is a
useful seven-seater.
I was scheduled into Hyundai’s
new Santa Fe just before Christmas,
however, a shipping mix-up
meant it wasn’t dispatched to
Christchurch.
Fast forward two months
and the range-topping Limited
arrived. The wait was really
worth it, it’s sophistication speaks
volumes, the Santa Fe is a model
that sits on the outer periphery
of the luxury wagon market, yet
it competes admirably with all of
the big names.
However, its biggest competition
will come from Kia’s new
Sorento; the two South Korean
companies are partners, yet battle
each other fiercely, especially in
terms of pricing.
The new Sorento, with a similar
driveline, has an advantage
there, how it all plays out in
the marketplace will be very
interesting to watch.
