• By Samantha Mythen THIS YEAR’S Single Fin Mingle event for women features 33 longboarders. The high number of entries compares well to the 48 who have entered the men’s event. Event founder Ambrose McNeil said: “There are some amazing female surfers and we want to support them and ensure women’s surfing will keep being increasingly promoted.” The event always awards equal prize money for both the male and female surfing categories. This happened even before the World Surf League started to offer equal prize money to its female competitors in 2019. Several Sumner women will be competing including Brittany Andrews and Lili Bay. Andrews has been surfing for most of her life, thanks to her dad. “He has surfed for 40-plus years, so being his only child I had no choice,” she said. “The first time I went surfing was in a competition when I was super young, he just entered me in it for a laugh I think.” She began to specialise in longboarding with again motivation from her dad, the longboarding community and the Mingle crew. “For me longboarding is quite relaxing . . . being able to cruise along the waves brings a big sense of calm and connection to the ocean,” said Andrews. The Mingle is Andrews’ favourite event of the year. “Everyone is supported and welcomed no matter if you surf or not. The inclusion of everyone and love shown makes it so special.” Bay has competed in the event since its beginnings in 2014. “It’s always awesome to surf in Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz the competition and it has been incredible seeing it grow over the years with the whole Sumner community getting involved,” she said. “I watch in awe as it unfolds. The competition is always the small part, the biggest and best part is having fun with friends.” Bay moved to New Zealand with her family from Germany when she was 13. The first thing her family did was try surfing. SKILLED: Brittany Andrews shows her longboarding talent. The longboarding community and its surf has inspired Bay’s own interest in the style. “The beauty about longboarding is that it is a completely even playing field between men and women as it is about grace and style more than force and energy,” she said. “Many of my friends are beautiful longboarders and everyone has a different aesthetic and style that they bring into their surfing Wednesday April 7 2021 Bay Harbour News NEWS 7 Longboard competition attracts 33 women that can’t be compared with each other.” Surfing New Zealand general manager Ben Kennings said: “I think a lot of females love the longboard and can enjoy it whatever the wave. It offers a lot more opportunities to get in the water.” Both Andrews and Bay love the surfing community, especially the women who make up a large portion of it. “I feel lucky for this community. I am grateful that so many women here are into it. I know other wahine around Aotearoa don’t have the same sense of community we experience here, again we have events like the Mingle to thank for that, there is always a big turnout of women longboarders that come which creates a bigger sense of community and empowerment for women,” Andrews said. Bay explained she had never felt a disadvantage as a woman surfing in Sumner but had heard about struggles of other female friends in places around the country. “I feel really lucky.
