Fire station set to be demolished

OVER MARCH 27-29,
the Sumner Volunteer Fire
Brigade moved into temporary
premises on Wakefield Ave.
This marks the next phase
of the rebuild of the existing
station in Wiggins St, which
suffered extensive, although
not crippling, damage in the
2011 earthquakes.
Temporary premises,
including a two-vehicle
appliance bay, offices and
a training room have been
constructed on the former site
of the Sumner gasworks, on
the corner of Truro St.

on the Wiggins St site, but
will also take in the section on
the corner of Wakefield Ave,
resulting in a larger footprint
for the station.
The station will have a
two-vehicle appliance bay,
office space and a meeting and
training room in a purposebuilt
modern facility.
Locals should be aware
that during the build process
the normal fire siren will
not be operating, but will
be reinstated when the new
station is operational.
The siren acts as an
additional means of
alerting the members –
pagers are not 100 per cent
reliable, particularly in the
hill-lined locality of the
Sumner valley.
The siren has been
reported to be a comfort
to those nearby who have
requested the brigade’s
assistance as it assures them
that their call for help has
been heard.
Sumner Fire Brigade
has operated in the local
community for 127 years,
and is entirely staffed by
volunteers.
Recruiting is currently
aimed at people who are
available to respond during
working hours.

for the garden were discussed.

to form a management
committee that then put

the city council.
