Fire station set to be demolished
Sumner
Volunteer
Fire
Brigade
chief fire
officer
Daryl
Sayer provides
an update on the
volunteer team
OVER MARCH 27-29,
the Sumner Volunteer Fire
Brigade moved into temporary
premises on Wakefield Ave.
This marks the next phase
of the rebuild of the existing
station in Wiggins St, which
suffered extensive, although
not crippling, damage in the
2011 earthquakes.
Temporary premises,
including a two-vehicle
appliance bay, offices and
a training room have been
constructed on the former site
of the Sumner gasworks, on
the corner of Truro St.
Demolition of the old
station will take place in the
THE MEETING to discuss the
establishment of a community
garden in Diamond Harbour
last Tuesday confirmed the
NEW BUILD: The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade building will soon be demolished
and another facility will be built on the Wiggins St site.
next couple of weeks before
construction of the new
station begins.
The new station will be built
on the Wiggins St site, but
will also take in the section on
the corner of Wakefield Ave,
resulting in a larger footprint
for the station.
The station will have a
two-vehicle appliance bay,
office space and a meeting and
training room in a purposebuilt
modern facility.
Locals should be aware
that during the build process
the normal fire siren will
not be operating, but will
be reinstated when the new
station is operational.
The siren acts as an
additional means of
alerting the members –
pagers are not 100 per cent
reliable, particularly in the
hill-lined locality of the
Sumner valley.
The siren has been
reported to be a comfort
to those nearby who have
requested the brigade’s
assistance as it assures them
that their call for help has
been heard.
Sumner Fire Brigade
has operated in the local
community for 127 years,
and is entirely staffed by
volunteers.
Recruiting is currently
aimed at people who are
available to respond during
working hours.
If you wish to inquire about
joining and are available
during the week, phone chief
fire officer Daryl Sayer on 027
Interest grows in Diamond Harbour community garden
desire for the project.
Potential sites and reasons
for the garden were discussed.
THe next steps will be
to form a management
committee that then put
forward a project proposal to
the city council.
