Approval given to
progress wharf upgrade
• By Samantha Mythen
THE DIAMOND Harbour
Wharf upgrade project has been
given approval to progress to the
next stage.
Last Thursday, the city
council’s Transport and Urban
Development Committee made
the decision allowing the project
to move ahead to the detailed
design phase.
This phase will allow for detailed
cost estimates.
Banks Peninsula councillor
and Deputy Mayor Andrew
Turner said preliminary
estimates during the concept
development have indicated the
project will be delivered within
the existing budget.
After the design phase has
been completed, a contractor for
construction will be procured
and then construction on the
wharf will begin.
Said Turner: “After some time
in the planning it is great to
see this much needed upgrade
happening. This is a significant
improvement to accessibility and
public safety – great news for the
community and for ferry users.”
Said Diamond Harbour Community
Association chairman
Nathan Graham: “The association
is very happy that the wharf
will be more accessible to those
with young children, the elderly
and others who struggle with
accessibility.”
A time line on how the project
will commence is yet to be
released.
“I’ve always wanted to be
involved in the community and
then we came up with the idea
for the library of boards, and
lending them out to the community.”
Said Alonso: “We realised this
was something we wanted to
keep doing. We are enjoying the
process and pushing each other.
It’s hard work but trying out the
boards makes it all worth it.”
The idea is that people will be
able to borrow a surfboard for a
koha.
“People can’t always afford a
board, plus the library would
mean people can try out and
experiment with different styles
of boards,” Sampaio said.
Alonso explained they had
brainstormed the idea that if
people liked a surfboard they
tried, they could then buy the
board for a low cost price covering
the materials for the board
and the materials for another
board to then be made for the
library.
“It’s not just about us making
the boards, but we want it to be a
community initiative. We would
love for people to provide feedback
on the boards too,” said Alonso.
Initiative to benefit community
It is a non-profitable project,
and the two men are currently
spending mostly their own money
and time to fund the venture.
The project is in its early stages
and they are currently shaping
their first few surfboards.
In the meantime, they are thinking
of offering to repair boards
to bring in more income to help
develop the project further.
Said Sampaio: “We want people
to believe in us and to do that
we have to show we are doing
something. We want to show
this is a project which is up and
running.”
