IN PERSON News Strategic new appointments at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity As part of Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s commitment to continuous improvement, the service has appointed Dr Adam Low and Dr Ryan O’Leary and reappointed Dr Malcolm Russell MBE as governance leads of the pre-hospital emergency medical service. Governance leads are selected every two years, and their responsibilities include the provision of clinical and management support to the critical care paramedic and medic-led services, ensuring excellent standards in clinical practice, staff development, education and clinical governance. Each lead will take on projects and additional responsibilities to further develop Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s pre-hospital care provision, including mentoring, facilitating case reviews, providing senior on call support to pre-hospital colleagues and supporting the appointment of new team members. In addition, they will support with the delivery of the clinical training suite and simulation room at the charity’s new airbase and charity headquarters, which will commence build work this spring in Shropshire. Dr Malcolm Russell MBE, medical director of the UK’s International Search and Rescue team, UK’s representative to the United Dr Adam Low Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group Medical Working Group, said: “I’ve been one of the clinical governance leads for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity for nearly four years now. It’s a fantastic organisation and we are privileged to be able to provide life-changing care to our patients. We can always improve though, so I felt compelled to re-apply for the position again and feel greatly honoured that I’ve been awarded one of the new posts.” Dr Adam Low, consultant anaesthetist at University Hospital Birmingham, Queen Elizabeth, said: “I am looking forward to joining Mark, Malcolm and Ryan as one of the governance leads for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and MERIT. The role will include leading on well-established governance streams such as organising our monthly governance and educational meetings, undertaking peer review and appraisal of colleagues to support them achieve their pre-hospital aspirations and develop new and exciting clinical and educational initiatives. I look forward to a busy and undoubtedly productive two years.” Dr Ryan O’Leary, intensive care medicine consultant and anaesthetist at Hereford County Hospital, said: “I am delighted to be appointed as a governance lead for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. This is a new role for me, and I look forward to playing my part in allowing our exceptionally talented team to grow and reach their full potential.” Hanna Sebright, chief executive for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, added: “The collective experience and knowledge of the governance leads puts our organisation in a very strong position. IN PERSON Dr Subo Shanmuganathan took up her position on the Trust’s Board of Directors on1 March 2021 and will serve a three-year term of office. Subo has a varied career in complex education, clinical and regulatory executive roles and has held several non-executive roles. She brings extensive knowledge and experience of strategic business change, organisational development, education and training and transformation programmes to deliver commercial revenue, gained in both the charitable and public sectors. Her PhD is in Clinical Immunovirology from Imperial College London. Chair of SECAmb, David Astley, said: “We are really pleased that Subo is joining SECAmb at this time. Her experience in people management and processes will provide relevant experience and challenge to support the continuing improvement of our HR provision to SECAmb colleagues. Subo also brings a wealth of knowledge about education, training and professional regulation which will add value to the Board. I look forward to welcoming Subo to our March Board meeting.” As well as undertaking her Board duties, Subo will be joining the Trust’s Finance and Investment Committee and Quality and Patient Safety Committee. Subo said: “I am delighted to be joining SECAmb knowing that our staff are doing such an important job for our communities, particularly during the pandemic. SECAmb News SECAmb thanks retiring Director of Operations South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) is bidding a fond farewell to its Executive Director of Joe Garcia Operations, Joe Garcia, who is retiring after more than 35 years in the ambulance service at the end of this month. SECAmb’s current Deputy Director of Operations, Emma Williams, will fill the role on an interim basis until a formal appointment process is completed. Joe, who received an MBE in this year’s New Year’s Honours, first joined the then East Sussex Ambulance Service in 1985, following a short career in the Royal Marines. Initially serving as an ambulance technician in Eastbourne, Joe went on to complete his paramedic training and undertake a number of different roles including time spent on the front-line, as a control room manager and in clinical education. In 2004 Joe moved to work for West Midlands Ambulance Service and in 2010 his experience saw him appointed to take forward the national Ambulance Radio Programme, led by the Department of Health. 2013 saw him return to direct involvement in front-line service as Associate Director of Operations at East Midlands Ambulance Service prior to him joining SECAmb in late 2016 as Interim Director of Operations – a position he was substantively appointed to in August 2017 – and from which he has overseen a significant period of improvement. The last 12 months has seen him play a pivotal role in the management of SECAmb’s operational response to COVID-19. SECAmb Chief Executive Officer Philip Astle said: “On behalf of everyone at SECAmb and in the wider ambulance community, I would like to thank Joe for his commitment and dedication over such a long period. His inclusion in this year’s New Year’s Honours list shows the high regard in which he is held. “I would particularly like to thank him for steering our operations through what has been an extremely challenging 12 months. I wish him all the very best for the future and a very happy retirement.” Joe said: “My journey through my career within the ambulance service has taught me so much about people and the full spectrum of what life has to offer. I have been privileged to work alongside some absolutely fantastic people over the years and I will cherish the times spent working in a such a close-knit team. “My days at SECAmb have been the pinnacle of my career. I feel so privileged to have been able to serve an amazing group of colleagues and help us all navigate our way through many improvements, and most recently during the tumultuous experience of a worldwide pandemic. “The greatest asset we possess is our people. Every part of every team, be that back office or front line, have a part to play in bringing relief to a medical or traumatic crisis for our patients and I will forever be proud to have been a part of Team SECAmb in providing that service.” SECAmb News SECAmb Chair reappointed for further three-year term South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, (SECAmb), is pleased to announce the reappointment of its Chair, David Astley, for a second three-year term. David’s reappointment was formally approved by the Trust’s Council of Governors at its most recent meeting on 4 March.
