Welcome to the April 2021 edition of The Halfway & 

Westfield Doorsteppa. 

We are absolutely delighted to be back! We’ve all 

experienced a winter like no other, and now the better 

weather and (fingers crossed) better times are ahead 

of us.. 

Local events are slowly returning to the community and 

we aim to include plenty of upcoming activities as the 

months progress. 

Many people will recall the Channel 5 show ‘Skin A & E’. 

They are now looking for more participants for their 

second series! Details of how to apply can be found in 

our Notices Section on page 11. There’s also an update 

on the Clowne Gala held annually at Heritage High 

School, as well as details of getting involved with local 

litter picks. 

In our Monthly Focus in this edition, we point our 

attention towards the origins of April Fools, and also 

look at International Jazz Day which is April 30. Check 

out page 15 for more. 

We have news that a record number of volunteers are 

needed for the trailblazing Rugby League World Cup. 

The recruitment of 2,000 volunteers has how opened! 

See more info in our Council News on page 19.

Westfield Litter Pick 

Westfield Litter Pick is held outside the Community Building 

on Saturdays. We meet at 9.50am, and we normally run 

until around 11.15, where back at the centre we have a tea 

or coffee, and a bacon sandwich provided by Big Local. 

The children also get a litter picking certificate. If you don’t 

have your own equipment this will be provided. 

It’s a lovely group helping to make our community a cleaner 

place while meeting new friends! 

There is also a S20/21 Litter Picking group on Facebook.

Halfway Litter Pickers 

A big thank you to everyone who has taken part in 

our Sunday morning litter picks over the last few 

weeks. 

We have seen an increase in people wanting to help 

every week since we started and we have managed 

to make a great improvement in a number of areas. 

The small wooded area and paths below Halfway 

Junior School are looking lovely. We have tackled 

the area around the school and also either side of 

the football pitch and the Streetfields area. 

Local children are getting involved which is 

wonderful and we hope this number increases over 

the weeks and months to come.

Clowne Gala 

The Clowne Gala will not be 

taking place this year. 

The Clowne Gala which is an event held at Heritage 

High School every July has unfortunately had to 

announce that it will not be taking place this year. 

The organisers who put on stalls, activities for all ages, 

and live music every year have said that due to the 

pandemic it is too early to start planning a public 

event. However they are optimistic about the return 

of the Gala in 2022 so keep an eye out for further 

notices. 

We will put together regular updates in ‘The 

Doorsteppa’ so watch this space!! 

If you know of an area around Halfway that needs 

a ‘spring clean’ please get in touch and get

April Fool! 

The origins of April Fools’ Day are lost way back in 

time but like many traditions it probably has a 

number of historical roots. 

There was certainly a Roman festival called Hilaria 

which took place around the time of the spring 

equinox. There was also a Medieval ‘Feast of Fools’ 

although that took place at the beginning of the 

year. Throughout history there seems to be a 

tradition of transgressing boundaries during such 

celebrations: whether male and female, low class 

and high class, religious piety and impiety, people 

have enjoyed straddling society’s boundaries. 

The most popular theory about the ‘modern’ April 

Fools’ Day is that it began to take shape in late 16th 

century France. At that time, there was a switch to 

the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. Prior to 

this there had been a New Year’s week (March 

25th-April1st), and under the Gregorian system, 

New Year’s Day fell on January 1st. 

As with any change there was some resistance, and 

many people stubbornly refused to accept the new 

system, continuing to celebrate New Year on 

April 1st. 

These people were ridiculed and labelled ‘fools’ by 

the general populace and were often the butt of 

jokes and pranks. They were known as poisson 

d’avril, or April fish, possibly because a naïve young 

fish is easily caught. 

Over the years the custom of prank-playing spread 

to the general population and eventually to Britain, 

where schoolboy pranks are still the order of the 

day, so watch out!

All that Jazz! 

International Jazz Day brings together schools, artists, 

historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the 

world to celebrate and learn about jazz. 

Jazz began in the early twentieth century in New Orleans, 

in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The port of New Orleans 

meant the area was a melting pot of different 

nationalities and their musical influences: Spanish folk 

music, French military band music, Ragtime, European 

ballroom dance music, and Blues music all had an impact 

on the birth of Jazz. 

Jazz wasn’t written down in 

the same way as classical 

music; the styles and tunes 

evolved as they were 

passed on by ear. Black 

musicians in particular, 

were for the most part not classically trained, and began 

to express themselves through jazz. These musically agile 

instrumentalists and singers improvised around a main 

melody, often the popular folk and blues tunes of the 

era, creating a rich and exciting new blend of sound. 

International Jazz Day - April 30th 

Although the ‘Jazz Age’ was in the 1920s, jazz never went 

away, it evolved through various incarnations. Talented 

soloists like Louis Armstrong pushed jazz in the direction 

of virtuosic improvisers, weaving their music around 

each other. Swing was a smoother, more easy-listening 

sound, popularised by the pianist and composer Duke 

Ellington. This was followed in the 40s and 50s by the 

Latin influences of Dizzy Gillespie, who collaborated with 

other musicians to bring jazz into the mainstream. 

Charlie Parker pioneered modern jazz (be-bop) which 

challenged many listeners with its complex 

experimentations in rhythm and harmony. Miles Davis 

on the other hand developed a more gentle, understated 

style. Free jazz ignored all the previous rules and 

constraints on harmony and structure which many 

people disliked. 

During the past 50 years jazz evolution has accelerated 

through jazz fusion – which fuses jazz solos with other 

musical styles - and acid jazz, which draws on soul, funk, 

disco and hip-hop. Well known pioneering acid jazz 

groups include 'Jamiroquai', and ‘The Brand-New 

Heavies'.

Volunteer during the Rugby League World Cup 2021 in Sheffield 

Record number of volunteers needed for trailblazing Rugby League World Cup 2021 power squad 

The recruitment of 2,000 volunteers for the Rugby League World 

Cup 2021 in England opened for applications at 08:00am on 25 

February 2021 via: volunteers.rlwc2021.com 

• Rugby League World Cup 2021 are recruiting 2,000 volunteers to 

be part of ‘The Power Squad’. 

• Applications opened at 08:00am 25 February 2021 and remain 

open until 20:21pm 23 April 2021. 

• Volunteer numbers will exceed previous RLWC events in the UK 

and around the world including Rugby League World Cup 2013 

and 2017. 

• The Power Squad will be the faces of the tournament and will 

carry out a variety of roles on all 61 match days at 21 venues 

across 18 host towns and cities, as well as supporting on 

non-match days. 

The Rugby League World Cup 2021 is presenting a record number 

of volunteering opportunities with the chance to be part of the 

biggest and best ever Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) when 

applications to join ‘The Power Squad’ open at 08:00am on 25 

February 2021. 

The Power Squad will be made up of 2,000 volunteers who will be 

the faces of the tournament, showcasing the values of Rugby 

League as well as welcoming the world to England when the 16th 

edition of this historic global event kicks off in the autumn. 

With hundreds of thousands expected to attend matches and 

World Cup activations happening across England - and millions 

more watching around the world – the RLWC2021 team are 

looking for enthusiastic volunteers to deliver an exceptional Rugby 

League World Cup experience for both fans and players. 

At twenty-one venues across eighteen host towns The Power 

Squad will play a key role in the delivery of the six-week tournament 

with a range of roles, including transport, spectator services, 

accreditation, way-finding, media, content and broadcast support. 

Recruitment opened on 25 February 2021 at 08:00am through an 

online application process and will conclude at 20:21pm on 23 

April 2021. The programme features a dedicated interview process 

followed by comprehensive training for successful candidates. 

The Power Squad will experience the unique atmosphere of the 

Rugby League World Cup, gaining important skills, meeting new 

people, and contributing to a world-class global event. 

Jon Dutton, Chief Executive of RLWC2021, said: “The Power Squad 

programme will be the biggest volunteer squad ever assembled for 

a Rugby League event. We want to engage with all ages, genders 

and communities and build on the incredible passion for volunteering 

at major events in England. The UK has a fantastic volunteer 

network which we hope to tap into. A successful tournament 

cannot be run without our Power Squad and we hope to welcome 

many new people to the ever-growing Rugby League family to 

experience the passion, pride and community spirit of the sport." 

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and 

Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: "The Rugby League World 

Cup 2021 is set to be the biggest and best event in the 

tournament's history. Those volunteering will be a part of 

something very special, a huge moment in sport for Sheffield and 

for Rugby League across the world. There are so many benefits to 

volunteering especially during a major event of this kind that will 

leave a lasting legacy beyond the tournament and a lasting 

impression on all those involved. I would encourage local people

RLWC2021 ambassadors Lois Forsell and Robbie Hunter-Paul will 

support the launch of The Power Squad application period as well 

as joining the rest of the RLWC2021 Ambassador Squad at the 

interview sessions and training days to pass on their knowledge of 

playing in a sporting event of this scale. 

Former England star Lois Forsell said: “I urge everyone in and 

around the RLWC2021 host towns and cities to take up this 

opportunity and apply to be a volunteer at international Rugby 

League’s showpiece event. There is no better chance to be the face 

of a global tournament in England and with that comes a unique 

opportunity to play an important role in the biggest and best ever 

Rugby League World Cup.” 

Robbie Hunter-Paul who helped New Zealand reach the final of the 

World Cup in 2000, added: “As a player you always highly 

appreciate the work that the volunteers do to provide a platform 

for greatness on the field of play - without a dedicated team of 

volunteers the tournament wouldn’t be a success. There is a real 

correlation between good mental fitness and new challenges and 

opportunities. In a time when the world is deprived of 

opportunities like this RLWC2021 is a beacon of light and being 

part of The Power Squad and experiencing the power of together 

to make memories that will last forever is really special.” 

Candidates must be available for a minimum of three shifts across 

the tournament and available to attend training sessions in the 

summer as well as being 18 or above by the 1 September 2021

Blooming marvellous total for Sheffield charity thanks to 

generous residents 

Garden waste customers raise £23,700 

for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund. 

Generous, green-fingered Sheffielders have 

raised £23,700 for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund. 

Veolia in partnership with Sheffield City Council 

temporarily suspended garden waste collections 

at the end of 2020 to ensure that the essential 

black bin and recycling collections could 

continue throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Green waste service customers were offered the 

chance to claim a refund for the equivalent value 

of the non-collections, or they could choose to 

donate it to charity. 

Over 4,200 big hearted Sheffielders donated 

their refund raising a total of £23,700, for the 

Lord Mayors Charity Fund which provides 

support to local charities each year. This year the 

chosen charities are: Sheffield Children’s 

Hospital, Weston Park Cancer Charity and 

Sheffield Sea Cadets. 

Steve Newman, General Manager for Veolia 

Sheffield, said: “We were delighted and 

overwhelmed by the generous response. Such a 

large total has been raised for the Lord Mayor’s 

Charity Fund, which supports some fantastic 

charities in the city. I’d like to thank all of those 

who contributed and helped support this 

amazing cause.” 

Councillor Tony Downing, The Lord Mayor of 

Sheffield, said: “I am humbled by this very 

generous donation from the people of Sheffield. 

As we all know charities have been hit particularly 

hard during the pandemic and this wonderful 

donation will be gratefully received by my 

chosen charities. Thank you so much to all of

Pedestrian crossing to be introduced 

Sheffield City Council has announced plans to improve 

pedestrian safety on Station Road, Halfway, near Halfway 

Nursery and Infants School. 

The scheme will provide improved pedestrian links within 

the community by proposing a new pedestrian crossing 

facility, a speed hump to calm traffic and the introduction 

of a part time 20mph zone aligned to Halfway Nursery and 

Infants School. This will help to reinforce safe driver 

behaviour along Station Road during school arrival and 

departure times. 

Councillor Julie Grocutt, Cabinet Member for Transport 

and Development at Sheffield City Council, said:

Councillor Tony Downing, Lord Mayor of Sheffield and 

Ward Member for Mosborough, said: 

“I know that this is an issue that local residents, parents 

and school staff care deeply about so I’m pleased that we

well as children getting to and from school. I am looking 

forward to discussing the plans further with businesses 

and residents in the area so that we can get the scheme in 

place as soon as possible.” 

“We’ve listened to the local community and have agreed 

that further action is needed to protect pedestrians using 

this busy road. After exploring the different options 

available, we have decided to propose a pedestrian 

crossing on Station Road with a part time 20mph zone to 

operate at the Halfway Infants and Junior School’s arrival 

and departure times. 

Residents and parents at the school have been contacted 

for any additional views they may on the new proposals.
