Readers respond to
concerns about the
effectiveness of traffic
calming trials in St Albans
I am writing with regards to
the article on page 1 and 5 in
Nor’West News last Thursday.
As stated in the article, Jo
Scott, a resident in Flockton St,
challenged the Papanui-Innes
Community Board about the
way that the traffic situation has
been “mismanaged”.
Some residents in the St
Albans area apparently
believe that the high increase of
traffic in Francis and Flockton
Sts is due to the closure of
Forfar St.
I have also heard and read on
social media that many people
believe that re-opening Forfar
St would alleviate many of the
present traffic issues.
I know that the increased
traffic from the motorway
opening may be most of the
problem.
I live in Forfar St and I am
very grateful that our street has
been closed off. Over the past
five years, before the motorway
was opened, Forfar St was the rat
runner’s street of choice.
Our street is much safer
now for children and families,
including the elderly, and a busy
childcare facility.
Traffic calming measures in
this area are in the early stages
of being worked out, due to the
increased volume of traffic from
the motorway and the changes to
the Forfar/Madras Sts roundabout.
I believe that better management
of Cranford St may help to
alleviate some of the concerns of
some of the residents in the area,
with regards to better traffic
management.
INEFFECTIVE:
Residents are
concerned
that Forfar
St closures
have made
surrounding
streets busier,
including
Flockton St.
Cranford St has been a key
entrance into Christchurch
city for a while, but I was very
surprised to find the city council
stopped traffic turning left into
the side roads.
Also, why was Forfar
St blocked off from the
continuation of Madras St? I
can’t understand the reason
for this. There is Forfar
Nursery and Preschool. From
town parents would more
naturally head up Madras and
Fofar Sts, but now they are
prevented.
A friend of mine lives in the
upper end of Forfar St. She works
in Southern Cross Hospital,
Bealey Ave; you have limited her
journey home.
Does she now too, in creating
yet further traffic on Cranford
St, have to try and turn into
Warrington St?
Said Williams: “It’s about making
use of the space as effectively
as possible. Giving back to the
community is fantastic, but it’s
about making sure this particular
facility is not going to come to
the expense of ratepayers, and if
the community organisation has
the capacity to pay for it.”
The 2300 sq m centre was
originally intended to be a
temporary building to provide
training facilities for high
performance athletes and teams
after the February 22, 2011,
earthquake.
If the community supports
it, a recreation group will take
full responsibility for the facility,
which includes a full-sized
indoor netball court, a strength
and conditioning gym, a 40m
running track, showers, offices
and meeting spaces.
The city council has recently
completed an initial request for
proposal process, where early
submissions were received from
interested community recreation
groups.
It could not disclose which
groups had applied as the city
council was still considering
their applications.
As determined by the Jellie
Park Management Plan, groups
could include basketball, netball,
Once public consultation
closes next month, submissions
will be analysed.
Potential users and an overview
of feedback will be considered
by the Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board. It
will decide whether the process
should be continued.
Following this process, a
public notice with names of
interested parties will be issued
and residents will be able to
provide feedback on if they want
that particular group.
If no objections are received,
the lease will be awarded.
Residents can discuss the
project with city council staff
on Tuesday at the Apollo Centre
entrance off Ilam Rd, anytime
between 4-6pm.
Our Representation
Review is underway
We’re proposing some tweaks to the city’s
ward boundaries, including combining
the Central ward with the Papanui and
Innes wards to form a community board.
We need your feedback:
How well does this represent your local
community? Have we got it right?
