8 Thursday May 6 2021 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NOR’WEST NEWS Home gets new life with church A reader responds to concerns about the effectiveness of traffic calming trials in St Albans Thank you for the article on traffic in Francis Ave and Flockton St. My views on the situation surround the traffic chaos on Francis Ave and Flockton St that is caused by the closing of Forfar St; nothing to do with the Christchurch Northern Corridor. And the “rat runners” are mainly the locals trying to get to and from their properties. Forfar St carried over 4000 vehicles a day so they had to move to other streets, being Francis Ave, Flockton St and Cranford St. There are 150 properties approximately on Forfar St, Mersey St and Mayfield Ave that all now have to use one of those three streets any time travel is south. Cranford St is now even busier with the northern corridor so it’s the slowest option. I will stop there but in summary, I’m fed up with the city council blaming the Northern Corridor when it was the closure of Forfar St that created the traffic mayhem. – Melanie McGowan • By Bea Gooding A THREE-bedroom Lockwood home destined for demolition has been given a new purpose in life in Papanui. It used to stand in the heart of Prebbleton and served as staff quarters at the former Meadow Mushrooms site on Springs Rd. Rather than demolishing the home to make room for a new $170 million retirement village, the Summerset Group decided to donate it to the Papanui Baptist Church. The house was relocated to its new home at Sawyers Arms Rd on Tuesday, where it will be refurbished and used to expand the church’s community activity. “We are absolutely delighted with this gift. It’s going to make such a difference to our ability to expand our community activity,” said Papanui Baptist Church elder Greg Scott. “It needs a fair amount of renovation as it hasn’t been used for quite some time, but it’s a wonderful house. Being a Lockwood house, it’s very strong and robust – we think it’ll be a good one to renovate.” The church is the umbrella organisation that oversees the Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust and strongly supports the ON THE MOVE: A three-bedroom Lockwood home from Prebbleton has been donated to the Papanui Baptist Church. Papanui Youth Development Trust. Through these trusts, a number of community activities are run from the church, such as music classes, lunches, social English for migrants, games and creative sewing. Over time, the house will be used to help accommodate some of these activities that are usually based at the church. But for now, it will house trust workers to enable them to live within the community they serve. Having some of the workers based closer to the church enabled them to see issues on the ground first-hand. “Embedding in our community is important to us, especially for the benefit of the people who are struggling with housing, or loneliness,” said Scott. “It will be a place for people who are active in the community to get to know their neighbours, rather than coming from different parts of the city.” Senior design manager Craig Given, of the Summerset development team, did not see a need to demolish a perfectly good home. “It made no sense to demolish it even though it would be quicker, so we thought: ‘Here’s a good crowd who will put it to good use,’” he said. “They provide great community support in a number of ways, and they also had the availability of land.” Summerset was recently granted resource consent to build its new Prebbleton retirement village, with construction expected to start in January next year. It will offer 290 independent homes, including serviced apartments, care rooms, and a state-of-the-art memory care centre for residents with dementia. It will be its fourth village across Canterbury.
