n Oakland receives award
of distinction
Oakland was honored by the
Florida Public Relations Association
(FPRA) for excellence in public relations
for the town’s Santa’s Lane
Drive Through Christmas. The community
holiday event was recognized
with an award of distinction
in the category of “Public Relations
Programs: Special Event” during the
Mid-Florida Image Awards.
Among the town staff who
planned and promoted the drive-thru
were event coordinator/permit tech
Valerie Gibbons, administrative
services and communications director
and FPRA Lake County chapter
President Elisha Pappacoda, and
public arts and heritage coordinator
and FPRA Orlando chapter Image
Awards Chair Ashlynn Webb.
Oakland’s annual holiday event
was reimagined in 2020 due to
COVID-19. With a new drive-thru
format, the event offered residents
the same spirit of joy without the risk
associated with a physical gathering.
Because of an outpouring of
community support, it attracted more
than 50% more children than the
previous year.
Conducted annually, the Image
Awards provides public relations
practitioners a platform to be recognized
in their home markets for outstanding
public relations tools and
programs. To qualify, an entry must
incorporate sound public relations
research and planning and meet the
highest standard of production, execution
and evaluation of results and
budget.
n Habitat for Humanity’s
newest community is a go
West Orange Habitat for
Humanity’s newest affordable
housing community, Criswell
Court, has been in the planning
stages since early last year. With
the land donation approval from the
city of Winter Garden finalized
last month, construction on Criswell
Court can begin soon. West Orange
Habitat has partnered with Mike
Morrissey, an architect in the west
Orange community, to design homes
in keeping with the city’s vision to
preserve the culture and history of
the area.
Criswell Court is named for Bill
Criswell, a founding member and
longtime supporter of West Orange
Habitat. It is the result of a partnership
between West Orange Habitat,
the city of Winter Garden, Polis
Institute, 321 Works and the residents
of east Winter Garden. The community
will have two 900-square-foot
cottage homes with two bedrooms
and one bathroom, as well as two
garden homes with three or four
bedrooms and two bathrooms.
