Ateam of Average Joes pull off the big one<br />

Agroup of mainlyIrish friends<br />

calling themselvesthe Average Joes<br />

won the $1000 Trophy Pull at the<br />

Sefton Tug Of War last Sunday.<br />

The Average Joeswere hot<br />

favourites to win the event at Sefton<br />

School aftersuccess in earlier<br />

years.<br />

Team captain Mike Mullery<br />

attributed their success to Guiness,<br />

the famous Irishstout whichisa<br />

favourite tipple within the group.<br />

Mike said the friends,which<br />

include some Kiwis and a<br />

Scotswoman, decided to call<br />

themselves the Average Joes<br />

because theydidn’tthink they were<br />

very good.<br />

‘‘We didn’t know we were goingto<br />

be goodand we are still pretty<br />

average, to be fair,’’hesaid.<br />

Tug of war events are popularin<br />

Ireland and, although some of the<br />

Irishteam membersare now based<br />

in Christchurch, others travelled<br />

from Aucklandand Dunedin for<br />

Sunday’s event.<br />

‘‘We loveit,’’ Mikesaid.‘‘It is a<br />

good day out and we enjoy it.’’<br />

The other bigtrophyonthe day,<br />

the $1000 Mixed Pull,was won by<br />

the Snap Fitnessteam, with<br />

Tuahiwi Tuturu winning the Year<br />

7/8 School Pull and Tuahiwi<br />

Manawa Titi winning the Year 5/6<br />

School Pull.<br />

The day is SeftonSchool’s big<br />

annual fundraiser.<br />
