Combined bull sale awin for all involved

Bulls being run out the back of
Oxford will go under the
hammer next month.
The Beechwood and Richon
Hereford studs are once again
joining forces with the
Woodburn Speckle Park/
Hereford stud for acombined
sale at Balcairn, near
Amberley, on Thursday, June
10.
Beechwood and Richon stud
cattle are run together at Rob
and Julie Stokes’ Lees Valley
property, with the young bulls
being grazed at Balcairn ahead
of the sale.
The Stokes family will have
33 Richon Hereford bulls on
sale, along with afew cows.
‘‘This is our third annual sale
for 2­year­old bulls and it’s
been working well,’’ Mr Stokes
says.
‘‘Having asale with likeminded
people makes alot of
sense and you get more people
on the day with bigger numbers
of stock.
‘‘We’re pretty optimistic,’’ he
says.
‘‘We’ve had adry summer, but
we had good rainfalls early on
in the season and the cattle
have travelled pretty well.
‘‘The schedule is back abit,
but overall it’s pretty positive
looking ahead for next season,
and the sheep have been doing
well.’’

bulls under commercial

Rob and Mary Ann Burrows
will have 22 Beechwood
Hereford bulls in the sale, with
several sired by Grassmere
Gallant 244, which they
purchased for $60,000 three
years ago.
‘‘We are very pleased with his
sons. We’re keeping one and
selling agood few,’’ Mr Burrows
says.
‘‘He’s apretty special bull.
Four studs have used him and
he’s got alot of progeny, with
120 progeny analysed.’’
The Burrows had success
earlier this month, selling a
bull, Beechwood Jolly Jack 133,
for $11,000 at the New Zealand
Herefords National Seed Stock
Sale in Palmerston North.
Helen and Tim Molloy will
have one pure bred Speckle
Park bull and six ‘‘7/8’’ Speckle
Park bulls, crossed with
Hereford cattle, from their
Woodburn stud.
‘‘They (Speckle Park) go
really well. They breed well
over other beef breeds and alot
of people are targeting them in
the dairy industry because of

the colour markings, so they’re
not putting them back in the
herd by mistake,’’ Mrs Molloy
says.
The Molloys imported
Speckle Park embryos and have
been gradually building their
Speckle Park stud up from a
Hereford base.
‘‘We are still small, but we are
slowly getting there.’’
Helen is particularly excited
about her bull in lot 2, which is
‘‘a good home­bred bull’’.
Speckle Park calves tend to
have alow birth weight but are
fast growing, and lot 2has ‘‘a
great carcass and is awellrounded
bull’’.
