Combined bull sale awin for all involved<br />

Bulls being run out the back of<br />

Oxford will go under the<br />

hammer next month.<br />

The Beechwood and Richon<br />

Hereford studs are once again<br />

joining forces with the<br />

Woodburn Speckle Park/<br />

Hereford stud for acombined<br />

sale at Balcairn, near<br />

Amberley, on Thursday, June<br />

10.<br />

Beechwood and Richon stud<br />

cattle are run together at Rob<br />

and Julie Stokes’ Lees Valley<br />

property, with the young bulls<br />

being grazed at Balcairn ahead<br />

of the sale.<br />

The Stokes family will have<br />

33 Richon Hereford bulls on<br />

sale, along with afew cows.<br />

‘‘This is our third annual sale<br />

for 2­year­old bulls and it’s<br />

been working well,’’ Mr Stokes<br />

says.<br />

‘‘Having asale with likeminded<br />

people makes alot of<br />

sense and you get more people<br />

on the day with bigger numbers<br />

of stock.<br />

‘‘We’re pretty optimistic,’’ he<br />

says.<br />

‘‘We’ve had adry summer, but<br />

we had good rainfalls early on<br />

in the season and the cattle<br />

have travelled pretty well.<br />

‘‘The schedule is back abit,<br />

but overall it’s pretty positive<br />

looking ahead for next season,<br />

and the sheep have been doing<br />

well.’’<br />

Rob and Mary Ann Burrows<br />

will have 22 Beechwood<br />

Hereford bulls in the sale, with<br />

several sired by Grassmere<br />

Gallant 244, which they<br />

purchased for $60,000 three<br />

years ago.<br />

‘‘We are very pleased with his<br />

sons. We’re keeping one and<br />

selling agood few,’’ Mr Burrows<br />

says.<br />

‘‘He’s apretty special bull.<br />

Four studs have used him and<br />

he’s got alot of progeny, with<br />

120 progeny analysed.’’<br />

The Burrows had success<br />

earlier this month, selling a<br />

bull, Beechwood Jolly Jack 133,<br />

for $11,000 at the New Zealand<br />

Herefords National Seed Stock<br />

Sale in Palmerston <strong>North</strong>.<br />

Helen and Tim Molloy will<br />

have one pure bred Speckle<br />

Park bull and six ‘‘7/8’’ Speckle<br />

Park bulls, crossed with<br />

Hereford cattle, from their<br />

Woodburn stud.<br />

‘‘They (Speckle Park) go<br />

really well. They breed well<br />

over other beef breeds and alot<br />

of people are targeting them in<br />

the dairy industry because of<br />

the colour markings, so they’re<br />

not putting them back in the<br />

herd by mistake,’’ Mrs Molloy<br />

says.<br />

The Molloys imported<br />

Speckle Park embryos and have<br />

been gradually building their<br />

Speckle Park stud up from a<br />

Hereford base.<br />

‘‘We are still small, but we are<br />

slowly getting there.’’<br />

Helen is particularly excited<br />

about her bull in lot 2, which is<br />

‘‘a good home­bred bull’’.<br />

Speckle Park calves tend to<br />

have alow birth weight but are<br />

fast growing, and lot 2has ‘‘a<br />

great carcass and is awellrounded<br />

bull’’.<br />
