All amatter of luck for Rangiora High School
By ABIGAIL CHESSUM
With luck on its side, Rangiora
High School took the runnerup
trophy in the Canterbury
regional section of the recent
national performing arts
competition, ShowQuest.
The school chose ‘‘Luck’’ as
its theme. More than 86
students took part, practising
anywhere from four to 10 hours
aweek outside school hours.
Schools that enter must
deliver amessage or theme
through the language of dance,
drama, music, art, culture and
technology.
Up to 100 students can be
involved, encouraging asense
of community within the school,
as well as creating room for
students to become involved in
leadership positions.
‘‘Regardless of where you
finish in this competition, it
provides areally valuable
experience for our school
community,’’’ says Keith
Anderson, an overseeing
teacher who has seen Rangiora
place in many ShowQuests.
‘‘It enables adiverse number
of people to work on something
really worthwhile.’’
Luck was explored in four
sections —good luck, bad luck,
superstitions, and the luck of
being in New Zealand.
Students created anineminute
dance spectacle that
also took awards for best use of
costumes, best props, and best
backdrop.
Rangiora High School has
competed in the contest for
many years, alongside other
fierce competitors such as
Burnside High School, which
won, and Cashmere High
School, which finished third.
Student leader and choreographer
Ella Spark said it was a
cool experience for everyone.
