The combined Matariki Hereford and Woodbank Angus onfarm bull salewill be heldnear Kaikoura on Tuesday, June 22. It is expected to attract buyers from across the SouthIsland,while bidding is also available onlineonBIDR. Matariki Herefords stud owner James Murray says his stud willhave 64 bulls on sale, while he expectshis cousins, John and Ben Murray,will also have around 60 bulls on offer from their Woodbank Angus stud. ‘‘We havegoodbulls spread right through the catalogue. We’re pleased with the type and how they’ve come through the dry conditions,’’ James says. His son,Jack, is responsible for the daytodayrunning of the stud, which comprises 600 stud cows on the 1400hectare propertyatClarence, combined with ablock at Ward. The Matariki Herefords stud was established in 1953 by James’ father. Last year’s bull sale got offtoaflying startwith the firstlot selling for the day’s top price of $42,000toGlenbrae HerefordsinHawke’s Bay. The Murrayfamily has been farming in the Clarence Valleysince James’ grandfather bought Woodbank farmin 1900.The farm was laterdivided after WorldWar 2, with his uncle takingover Woodbank farm and his father establishing the Matariki stud. The Matariki operation comprises amix of hill country, flats and 60ha of irrigated land. The bull salestartsat1pm on Tuesday, June22. Bulls sired by Hereford bull Grassmere Gallant 244, which sold for $60,000 three years ago, will feature at the combined Grassmere, Riverlands J and Capethorne onfarm bull sale being held near Cheviot on Thursday, June 10. Capethorne Polled Herefords stud owner Greg Chamberlain says he has 15 Hereford bulls on sale, including sons of Gallant, which was sold to fellow <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> stud, Beechwood Herefords, at the 2018 combined onfarm sale. Several changes have been made on the farm since last year’s sale, with Greg and wife Debbie forming anew farming partnership with son Hamish and his wife, Aleisha, who have moved back home, Greg says. ‘‘We have had afew changes here on the farm in the last twelve months, we have taken over the lease of 300 hectares next door, giving us abit more scale, with just over 800ha in total.’’ The Chamberlains have combined forces with Chris and Amanda Jeffries, who run the Grassmere Polled Hereford and Riverlands JAngus studs, for several years. Bulls will be displayed in the pens before being sold through the selling ring, while bidding will also be available online through BIDR.
