4 Thursday June 10 2021 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz PEGASUS POST Making sure rivers are ‘flowing free’ • By Bea Gooding HUGH CANARD has been on a four-decade mission to save New Zealand’s rivers. A passion for water conservation evolved during his childhood when all his favourite rivers that he loved to swim and kayak in were turned into lakes to make way for dams. Questioning everything ever since, he dedicated his life to ensuring people and authorities are honest about the consequences of their actions on the environment. And it was why he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to conservation and paddle sports in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. “I’m really thrilled and thankful for all the people I met along the way and supported me,” he said. Canard was president of Whitewater New Zealand Inc from 1980 to 1990 and has been its patron since 1992. He is a member of the Canterbury Regional Water Committee and contributed to policy forums, providing guidance to members responsible for representing the interests of paddle sports, river recreation and conservation throughout New Zealand. Canard has also led hundreds of amateur kayaking and rafting trips for the Canterbury Whitewater Club. Over the past 40 years, he has been instrumental in securing Water Conservation Orders on the Kawarau, Buller, Grey, Rangitata and Mohaka rivers. But it did not stop there – he has either been a member or chairman of numerous organisations nationwide, including the Nelson-Marlborough Conservation Board, National Water ADVENTURE: Hugh Canard on the Waiatoto River on the West Coast. Strategy Working Group, and the Packrafting Association of New Zealand. Canard developed certificates and codes of practice for the Sea Kayak Operators Association, which he helped establish, and helped purchase land by the Buller River in order to retain public access. But most of all, his proudest achievement was “the fact that some really big rivers are still there and flowing free” and having a hand in making sure it stays that way. He said it has become much easier than it was 20 years ago to have conversations with people like irrigators around taking care of waterways. The Bridge Hub used to be a church but after the earthquakes became un-used. The vision of The Bridge Hub is to be a soon to be event venue offering all kinds of things like yoga, tai chi, a cappella singing, a space for an art gallery, a wellness center, a hall for hire for private and public events, a communal space and so much more! One problem they found after the earthquakes was that a lot of South New Brighton local facilities got removed and so locals needed a new spot to meet and do activities, and this is how The Bridge Hub all started. Avon Dickie Construction were the lead builders on the day, guiding our team while we assisted with framing up the fence. It was a day full of very hard work and it’s so rewarding to see that it’s paid off. The day started by meeting outside of our store and then driving down to the site. We then had a team meeting with our team, the builders and Steve the project manager of the bridge hub. We went over health and safety and a plan for the day. We started out by using the post hole borer to dig the holes for the fence post. We then lined up and braced the fence posts, then once they were straight, we set them with concrete. Then in the weekend a group of volunteers went along and put all the palings on. As you can see the finished result is amazing! We are very happy with how it turned out.
