Registrations open forBusiness of the Year<br />

The <strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council has had<br />

its first entry in theBusiness of theYear<br />

awards, anew eventthatrecognisesour<br />

businesscommunity.<br />

The entry is in the People’s Choiceaward,<br />

which will bedecided by text vote. Each<br />

retail business in the award category will<br />

be provided with aunique voting code<br />

allowing people tofree text the code to<br />

4196 to support their favouriteretailer.<br />

Theawardisforallthoseintheretailsector,<br />

including franchisees, online, big, small<br />

and traditional operators, and ranging<br />

from garden centres, motor vehicle<br />

dealerships to bakeries and computer<br />

suppliers.<br />

Council’s Community Services Group<br />

Manager Steve Fabish said the voting<br />

period for the People’s Choice award will<br />

be between 1August and 30 November,<br />

so it wasgood to see retailersbeginningto<br />

enter.<br />

"Mid Canterbury ishome to many great<br />

businesses and these awards are an<br />

opportunity to showcase theirstories to a<br />

wider audience.<br />

"It's also achancefor thoseinbusiness to<br />

reflect on their core strengths and review<br />

achievementsand milestones,"headded.<br />

Other award categories recognise<br />

excellence inprimary industries, export,<br />

tourism, manufacturing, not-for-profit<br />

and technology and innovation. There is<br />

alsoaFuture Business Leaderaward and<br />

an Overall Supreme Business Excellence<br />

award.<br />

Entries in all but the People’sChoiceretail<br />

categorymust be received by 5pmon30<br />

November.<br />

Category finalists will be announced in<br />

Decemberand all winners willberevealed<br />

at agala evening on 18 February2022.<br />

A special judging panel and awards<br />

coordinator will assess the entries.<br />

Selected entrants will progress to stage<br />

two of the judgingphase.<br />

There is no cost to enter the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

District Business ofthe Year Awards. Any<br />

business within the district is eligible,<br />

providedtheyhave beenoperating for12<br />

months or moreasofMarch 31 of this year.<br />

IntroducingIan Soper,the Council’s<br />

newOpen Spaces manager<br />

IanSopercan step out hisoffice doorto<br />

check out thebest piece of real estatein<br />

town: the<strong>Ashburton</strong>Domain.<br />

He is <strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council’s new<br />

OpenSpacesManager and knows looking<br />

after the domain, aswell as other parks<br />

and green spaces all aroundthe district,is<br />

an important job.<br />

Ian has come to <strong>Ashburton</strong> from Gore<br />

District Council where hemanaged the<br />

parks department there for 16years. His<br />

horticultural working career,which started<br />

as an apprentice in 1980, also covers<br />

private enterprise and local government<br />

experience.<br />

Passing through <strong>Ashburton</strong> over the<br />

years, he has always been impressed<br />

by <strong>Ashburton</strong>’s domain, considered the<br />

town’s jewel in the crown, and is now<br />

pleasedtocallthisregionhome.Ianandhis<br />

wifeSuehavefamilyspreadfromNelsonto<br />

Southland, so <strong>Ashburton</strong> is ideallyplaced<br />

fortravel to see grandchildren either way.<br />

And it is an exciting time to be arriving at<br />

Council when the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Domain is<br />

about to embark on aperiod ofchange<br />

that will set itupfor the next 100 years<br />

following the adoption of a 30-year<br />

development plan. The plan includes<br />

proposals formoving the main entranceto<br />

Walnut Avenue, adding asealed perimeter<br />

path, and playground improvements.<br />

All green spaces cycle through periods<br />

of development, consolidation and<br />

maintenance.<br />

Officially, the domain and other green<br />

spaces areamenitiestobemanaged, but<br />

theyalso requirepassion and agood longterm<br />

vision.While footpaths canbedug up<br />

and replaced in aweek,the value of atree<br />

planted in the domainmight not be visible<br />

for80years.<br />

Managing the space isabout making it<br />

safe, attractive, usable and educational.<br />

Trees, especiallysome of the oldest ones,<br />

require close attention and there are<br />

plentyofmaturevarieties to keep an eye<br />

on.<br />

Ian hopes in the future to have domain<br />

maps that show the tracks and paths,<br />

and even an app that shares historical<br />

information about particular trees or<br />

areasofthe domain.<br />

Partofhisroleisliaisingwiththe<strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Domain User Group, which includes<br />

sporting and other groups using the space,<br />

so information canbemoreeasily shared<br />

about ongoing work.<br />

Ian'swider role as Open Spaces Manager<br />

also includes oversight of the district's<br />

cemeteries, its public toilet facilities,<br />

stockwater race management,support for<br />

reserve boards and general beautification<br />

of the district.<br />

The town’s pioneers, who created the<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> Domain, wouldbewell pleased<br />

with their foresight,and Ian looksforward<br />

to continuing to care for and maintain<br />

these beautiful public spaces.<br />
