THEATRICAL: Harrison Mugford, 10, of Cashmere, was among those performing at the Aurora Centre last week. Impact
Dance and Stage School’s four-day KidsFest musical theatre workshop came together with regular Impact Company
kids for a finale showcase. The song and dance extravaganza featured a variety of music and dance styles, including
hip-hop, contemporary, tap and jazz. • More photos, page 6
SHOPS AT a busy Cracroft
intersection are putting a pinch
in business down to ongoing
roadworks in the area.
They say it is largely because
customers are having difficulty
navigating the roadworks at the
Cashmere, Hoon Hay and Worsleys
Rds intersection for the last
three months.
But because it was the entrance
to the Christchurch Adventure
Park and the new Cashmere
Estate subdivision, the work was
necessary to improve congestion
and safety for all road users.
Silverbacks Cafe owners Juntu
Huang and Ying Zhang are looking
forward to construction coming to
an end next month after weeks of
quiet days. Sometimes it is so bad
they are forced to close early.
Ever since April they have
noticed a 30 to 40 per cent drop
in business compared to previous
years in a similar time period, and
prior to construction starting.
With reduced parking, everchanging
and confusing road
detours and narrower roads,
people are avoiding the area
altogether.
In Brief
CONGESTION: Silverbacks Cafe co-owner Ying Zhang is sick and tired of roadworks in Cracroft causing a pinch in business
for several months.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Traders ready for roadworks to end
• From page 1
“For us as a cafe, we have lots
of local customers, especially in
the morning on the way to work
or if people are walking or running
in the area,” Huang said.
“But because of the roadworks,
people aren’t really coming anymore.
Some people don’t know
how to make the detour and feel
it’s hard to drive around, or they
have to walk [further] as they
need to park their car on
another street.”
Although the city council recently
encouraged people to visit
the Cracroft shops through social
media, Huang believed signs
pointing to the shops should be
installed as a reminder that it
was still business as usual.
The same could be said for
Velo Passion Project owner
Richard Maddock.
“It’s a fair bit quieter that’s for
sure, but it’s unavoidable. It’s
got to be done as traffic built up
there before this, so I’m glad it’s
now rather than in summer, “ he
said.
“I just hope they get it done on
time.”
This winter painted a different
picture compared to last year following
the level 4 lockdown.
“Last year after Covid the bike
industry went through a huge
upturn, but it’s really different
this winter.”
The disruptions were definitely
noticeable for Rebecca Wilson,
who owns hair salon 50 Shades
of Fabulous.
“But I don’t have any complaints,
the road workers are doing
the best they can,” she said.
“We’re lucky as most people
book.”
The city council is
reconstructing the intersection
to address increased traffic in the
area.
Work includes new traffic
lights, speed bumps and road
realignment to accommodate
better traffic flow.
NO STOPPING
No stopping restrictions were
approved for the Mathers Rd
and Cedars St intersection at
the latest Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board meeting.
The restrictions will be put in
place in response to residents’
concerns about a lack of road
visibility caused by parked cars.
No stopping restrictions were
also approved for the Darley and
Barrington Sts intersection. The
existing Darley St restrictions
did not extend far enough down
the narrow street, causing road
obstruction from on-street
parking.
HAVE YOUR SAY
Feedback is being sought on a
project to improve a pedestrian
island in Sydenham before
workers are on-site. The city
council is widening the existing
pedestrian island to make it
safer to cross Tennyson St near
Norwood St as it is narrow and
only safe for two to three people
or one pushchair. The crossing
is also used by many children
on the way to school. The work
also includes removing three
parking spaces outside 108 and
112 Tennyson St, providing
pedestrians with better road
visibility. Submissions are
open until Monday on the city
council’s Have Your Say website.
Bid to find more homes
for abandoned dogs
A CITY council
partnership to retrain
dogs for adoption with
a Bromley-based animal
shelter has resulted in
almost all dogs being
rehomed last year.
The collaboration is
between the city council’s
animal services team
and Dogwatch Sanctuary
Trust, as well as the
Christchurch Bull Breed
Rescue in Woolston.
“Working with Christchurch
Bull Breed Rescue
and Dogwatch Sanctuary
Trust is a key part of
our focus on rehoming
dogs,” city council animal
services manager Lionel
Bridger said.
“These two organisations,
together with shelter staff,
play a vital role in helping
to re-train dogs so that they
can be adopted out.”
When animal services
find dogs that are not microchipped
and ownership
cannot be confirmed, or
when dogs are not collected
by their owners after
seven days, the city council
looks to what other options
they have to avoid what
would have historically
resulted in euthanasia.
“Shelter staff now assess
the dog’s temperament
over a period of time and
determine with work by
either Dogwatch or Bull
Breed Rescue whether the
dog would be suitable for
rehoming.
“If they are, we would
hold dogs for up to a
month until there is space
available for them.
“The dogs are then
rehomed from the shelter
to one of the organisations,
who put a lot of work in to
ensure they find the right
owner,’’ Bridger said.
The collaborative approach
has dramatically
reduced the number of
FOREVER HOME: Christchurch Bull Breed
Rescue founder Abbey Vanderplas has partnered
with the city council to retrain abandoned dogs,
allowing more of them to be adopted out.
dogs being euthanised by
the city council.
Last year the city council
placed 675 dogs in the
animal shelter.
Of those 563 were
returned to their owners,
47 referred to Dogwatch
and Bull Breed Rescue for
rehoming and 50 rehomed
directly from the Shelter.
Only 15 dogs were
euthanised. By contrast,
Auckland City Council
figures for last year show
that 5492 dogs were impounded,
1388 euthanised
and just 372 adopted.
Dogwatch’s adoption
centre manager Kelly Burt
said the dogs come to them
with a variety of issues including
poor socialisation,
barking, nipping and fence
jumping.
Once specific behaviours
were identified, Dogwatch
develops a training plan
before looking for a suitable
home.
Said Burt: “We don’t
want them to bounce
around, we want these
dogs to go to homes and
stay there so we aim to
VOTE
nOw!
make a match between
what the owner can
provide and what the dog
needs. It’s about that willingness
to work together.”
Abbey Vanderplas is one
of two full-time, trained
volunteers at the Bull
Breed Rescue.
She works with more
than 20 other volunteers
and foster carers to provide
support for pitbulls,
staffordshire terriers, bull
terriers and their crosses.
She founded the organisation
10 years ago after
adopting a staffordshire
puppy from the city council
shelter and realising
the difficulties bull breed
dogs faced in finding new
homes.
Vanderplas said there
was an “old school mentality”
that just is not there
today.
“It took time to lift that
stigma but Christchurch
now is really lucky with
our animal management.
For a large city we are
doing phenomenally well
at making sure good dogs
get a chance.”
No one day is ever the same at McMaster
& Heap Vets. Last Wednesday night we
got an urgent call that a GSP, aptly named
“Maximus Carnage” had ingested 250g
of 50% Chocolate with 250ml cream.
Max cleverly lifted the pot of cream
and chocolate off the stove and licked
ravenously at its contents while his
humans had left the kitchen. Chocolate is
very poisonous to dogs, especially the dark
variety, so we urged Max’s owners to rush
him into us before close.
On arrival Max looked excited to be in our
waiting room, saying hello to the other
waiting patients. Kirsty was the first to
see Maximus and tried to make him sick
up the chocolate with a double dose of
medication popped into the conjunctival
sac, that is supposed to induce vomiting.
Nope! Max wasn’t giving up his chocolate
feast easily. Chocolate is slowly absorbed
from the stomach so you have about 4-6
hours to make them sick.
All that ingested chocolate could have
had dire consequences for Max, so Kirsty
quickly anaesthetised Max, stomach
tubed him to remove the chocolate and
copiously lavaged his stomach to remove
every trace. She retrieved 1/2 a bucket
of chocolate. Then she poured activated
Charcoal down his tube to help soak up
any remains of chocolate. Max was placed
on intravenous fluids to help excretion
of the methyxanthine and provide
cardiovascular support. Caffeine can be
reabsorbed across the bladder wall and
this can prolong the duration of clinical
signs so fluids and frequent urinations are
highly recommended. Max was closely
monitored until he was awake and then
sent to the After Hours clinic for overnight
care.
Chocolate is directly toxic to dogs as it
contains methylxanthines - in particular
Theobromine and Caffeine. Initially dogs
may vomit, drink lots, start tremoring and
become restless and agitated. As toxicosis
progresses their hearts rate quickens,
blood pressure elevates,
they become hot, rigid
and may start to seizure.
Sometimes they can just
die from toxic levels. Other
toxic products with the
methylxanthines are cocoa
and coffee beans, diet
pills, cold medications,
Guarana, stimulant pills,
tea leaves, energy drinks
and coffee.
Dark unsweetened chocolate, cocoa
powder and cacao beans are the
worse in milligrams of methylxanthines
contained. White chocolate has virtually
no methylxanthines but is just high in fat
and could lead to pancreatitis. There is a
chocolate calculator online to work out
whether your dog has ingested a lethal
dose and needs to seek vet attention.
Max was lucky that his owners realised
what he had done and sought our help
immediately. Having 3 vets on that
Wednesday night, meant Steve and I could
cover Kirsty’s consults so she could spent
1.5 hours working on Max. The After-hours
clinic wasn’t open at this stage and he
needed gastric emptying immediately.
Max and
his family
Very pleased to say Maximus Carnage
has made a full recovery but this won’t
Max, the
Chocolate
eating dog
stop him attempting to
steal more chocolate
in the future. Prognosis
depends on type and
quantity of chocolate
ingested, body weight
of the dog and the time
lapse between eating and
being made to vomit. Max
had a lucky escape.
MARGARET STODDART
VILLAGE FEELS LIKE HOME
Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village’s
residents and staff enjoy a feel-good village
boasting that x-factor. The village is quietly
tucked away behind Riccarton Road, and
always impresses visitors and prospective
residents when they visit.
An advantage of the location is that the village
is very close to Hagley Park, retail shops, cafes,
and Riccarton Mall, with a bus stop close by.
New residents find many positives living in
the boutique village and often comment ‘it
already feels like home’.
The team of managers, care and activities
staff love the positive reaction from
residents; it makes their job a pleasure.
The leadership team comprises of Village
Manager Merrin Jack, Clinical Manager Maya
Daniel and Serviced Apartment Coordinator
Hilary Westley.
Merrin says Margaret Stoddart has a
wonderful atmosphere. Independent,
serviced apartment and resthome residents
often come together to provide a lovely
sense of community.
Staff members get to know family
members well too, young grandchildren
are given a special welcome with a smile
and high-five!
Merrin believes that a well-run village,
backed by the wider Ryman team, makes
for happy residents, staff and beautiful
well-maintained facilities.
Maya is closely involved with many residents,
their families, and GPs. Over the two years
she has been at the Riccarton village it has
been very satisfying to be part of the family.
Hilary says both staff and residents love their
day to day interaction, and there is a lot of
fun and laughter. “The beauty of it is because
we are so small, we get to know everyone
very well, and they get to know us well.”
“We get to know the residents and their
history, their stories. We know what their
preferences are and what interests them.”
In her role, Hilary ensures the resident’s
daily living needs are met and liaises with the
nursing staff regarding any health needs.
Surinder, Activities and Lifestyle Coordinator,
leads a comprehensive activities programme
She enjoys the close contact with the
residents and organising the regular Happy
Hour get-togethers, exercise classes and
church services at the village.
Another part of her job is to organise events
and outings to cafes and Canterbury scenic
spots in the village van.
Merrin adds how lucky they are to have
dedicated, caring residents who like to get
involved and establish groups such as the
village choir.
“We have a wonderful group of independent
residents who put on a pantomime for the
rest of the village each year, for no reason
other than it brings joy to others.”
Sales Advisor Lynne Bretherton helps new
residents with the sales and move-in process
and enjoys continuing the relationship as
they become part of the village community.
Richard Crump, Lead Maintenance, and
Stephen Cartwright, Head Gardener, enjoy
chatting with residents as they go about their
daily work.
Richard loves helping the residents. He
does everything from fixing pieces of art to
residents’ walls, and putting up shelves, to
liaising with the tradesmen and contractors
to ensure the village is very well-maintained.
Stephen designs and maintains the beautiful
gardens in the village. He also completes
maintenance jobs as required and has even
been known to glue a shoe or two! There
is also a communal fruit and vegetable
garden for the residents, so they can grow
their own produce.
Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village has
happy residents and caring, professional
staff, giving it a real family feel.
