PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN Traders ready for roadworks to end • From page 1 “For us as a cafe, we have lots of local customers, especially in the morning on the way to work or if people are walking or running in the area,” Huang said. “But because of the roadworks, people aren’t really coming anymore. Some people don’t know how to make the detour and feel it’s hard to drive around, or they have to walk [further] as they need to park their car on another street.” Although the city council recently encouraged people to visit the Cracroft shops through social media, Huang believed signs pointing to the shops should be installed as a reminder that it was still business as usual. The same could be said for Velo Passion Project owner Richard Maddock. “It’s a fair bit quieter that’s for sure, but it’s unavoidable. It’s got to be done as traffic built up there before this, so I’m glad it’s now rather than in summer, “ he said. “I just hope they get it done on time.” This winter painted a different picture compared to last year following the level 4 lockdown. “Last year after Covid the bike industry went through a huge upturn, but it’s really different this winter.” The disruptions were definitely noticeable for Rebecca Wilson, who owns hair salon 50 Shades of Fabulous. “But I don’t have any complaints, the road workers are doing the best they can,” she said. “We’re lucky as most people book.” The city council is reconstructing the intersection to address increased traffic in the area. Work includes new traffic lights, speed bumps and road realignment to accommodate better traffic flow. NO STOPPING No stopping restrictions were approved for the Mathers Rd and Cedars St intersection at the latest Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board meeting. The restrictions will be put in place in response to residents’ concerns about a lack of road visibility caused by parked cars. No stopping restrictions were also approved for the Darley and Barrington Sts intersection. The existing Darley St restrictions did not extend far enough down the narrow street, causing road obstruction from on-street parking. HAVE YOUR SAY Feedback is being sought on a project to improve a pedestrian island in Sydenham before workers are on-site. The city council is widening the existing pedestrian island to make it safer to cross Tennyson St near Norwood St as it is narrow and only safe for two to three people or one pushchair. The crossing is also used by many children on the way to school. The work also includes removing three parking spaces outside 108 and 112 Tennyson St, providing pedestrians with better road visibility. Submissions are open until Monday on the city council’s Have Your Say website.
