Summer 2021House LeadvilleTHIS DAY IN HISTORYby Patrick LawlerPage 26The 1890 Sherman Silver Purchase Actwent into effect, hoping to stabilizefluctuating silver prices, but when this wasrepealed in August 1893 and the Taborswent flat broke. The repeal wasn’t entirelythe source of their demise, but August 08,1893 turned out to be a terrible day for thenew couple. Many of his properties weresold to cover loans, and the downwardspiral became so bad that Horace took ajob as a mine worker at age 65 to coverliving expenses. Some well-connectedfriends got him a postmaster job in 1898,but he died just 15 months later. Baby Doemanaged for a few years, but eventuallymoved back to Leadville to try andreinvigorate the Matchless Mine (withoutsuccess).Around 1911, things got so bad for BabyDoe that she moved into the former toolshed at the Matchless with one of herdaughters, Rose Mary Echo Silver DollarTabor, who left shortly thereafter for a wildlife in Chicago. Baby Doe took up residencein the cabin, guarding it with a shotgun andliving as a recluse, and occasionallywandered town in rags. Good-heartedneighbors kept an eye on her, though shewas known for not taking handouts. Afternearly 25 years in the one room cabin, shewas found frozen on the floor in the winterof 1935.The Matchless Mine and Baby Doe’sCabinThere are many details to this storythat add to the lore. Horace and BabyDoe are buried in Mt. Olivet Cemeteryin Wheat Ridge, you can see theopera ‘The Ballad of Baby Doe’ (everynow and then), and you can visit theTabor Opera House, Matchless Mine,and Baby Doe’s Cabin in Leadville.Today, the Tabor and Baby Doenames are attached to buildings,restaurants, retail shops, andcampgrounds all around Colorado. By theway, Augusta Tabor retained her businesssense after her divorce from Horace,rebuilt her wealth, was a notedphilanthropist, and lived a productive lifebefore passing away in 1895 as one of thewealthiest women in Denver.
