Anew exhibition of video
works has opened at the
AshburtonArt Gallery.
NamedDurations the
exhibition created by film
maker Gaylene Barnes
features ninescreens each
showingeight hours of
unedited footage of an animal.
Having spentover 20 years
cutting footage for natural
history documentaries
Gaylenerealised how the story
can often be manipulated.
‘‘Weput our ownstory on the
natural world, Iamjust
reacting againstmycareer as a
natural history editor, now I
am looking at whatitisthe
animal wants to tell us, and the
only way to do that is to spend
adurationoftime with the
animal.
‘‘I have been quite decisive
about what it is Iamgoing to
film,itispartofaprocessof
beingwith that animal over an
eighthourperiod.’’
Eight hours seems like along
time to be watchingananimal,
but for Gaylene the idea of
focusedattention is important.
‘‘I wanted to focus my
attention on this animalfor a
moment andthat is my gift to
you,’’ she said.
As well as directingand
editingdocumentaries and
creating her own films,
Gaylene also runsthe Barnes
Family Farms business with
her brother at Highbank near
