Junior students had the opportunity totake in atwo-hour lesson before<br />
hitting the slopes,and manywereexcited to experiencethe new Nor’West<br />
Express Chairlift, allowing them to repeatedly experience the joys of the<br />
Broadway Run on amoreregular basis.<br />
The same chairlift took the Inter-House Tucker Trophy Competitors to the<br />
topofthe race-track whereperfect conditions sawthem take on the slalom<br />
course.<br />

Sports Teams in Various Tournaments<br />
Prior to and during the July studentholiday break,Collegeteams<br />

Successes forCollege Under 15 Boys’Rugby<br />
Playing in the inaugural EllesmereSchool Boys’Competition of fiveteams-<br />
Lincoln High School, Ellesmere College, Rolleston College, MtHutt College<br />
and <strong>Ashburton</strong>College –the College team had averysuccessful season.<br />

Season’s Results –<br />
As advised by the coaching staff, the results speak for themselves. With a<br />
wider squad of thirty three players, the Under 15 Management Group will<br />
have some very tough decisions to make in selecting the permitted twenty<br />
fivefor the forthcoming SecondarySchools’WinterTournamentWeek.<br />
During this week the team will be contesting the Rural Livestock Junior<br />
RugbyTournament, in Oamaru,from30<strong>August</strong>–01September.<br />
To date –specific results havebeen:<br />
Twogames,and twowins,onWednesday26May:against EllesmereCollege<br />
(31-0), and against Rolleston High School (17-0).<br />
On Wednesday 09June the team suffered their only loss, against Lincoln<br />
College (19-12).<br />
Wednesday30June sawareturn<br />
to winning ways with a 48-15<br />
gain over Mt Hutt College. This<br />
day was a Curtain Raiser for<br />
the 1st XV match again Selwyn<br />
Schools.<br />
As partofthe <strong>Ashburton</strong>College-<br />
Rangiora High School Exchange<br />
on Monday<strong>05</strong>July the team had<br />
asignificant43-10 win.<br />
Wednesday 07July saw another<br />
competition time of two games<br />
and, again, two wins: against<br />
Mt Hutt College (19-5) and a<br />
reversal over Lincoln College with<br />
a26-15 scoreinfavourofAshColl.<br />
These games were played within<br />
aFestival to end the season.<br />

In rounding up this partofthe season the managementteam said thatthe<br />
future ofthe College 1st XV is looking bright with this extremely talented<br />
group coming through the ranks.<br />
AshColl Maths Competition<br />
Held at the end of Term Two, onThursday 24 June (Year 10 students) and<br />
Friday25June(Year 9students),teamsoffour or less spent theirlunchtime<br />
answeringuptofifteen problem-solving questionswithin atwentyminute<br />
time-span.<br />
Organiser, Mathematics teacher Liz Cabout, said that this competition is a<br />
pre-cursor/selection process to form teams to represent<strong>Ashburton</strong> College<br />
at the AorakiMath Competition in Timaru on Thursday 12 <strong>August</strong>.<br />
Year 10 Competition<br />
Four teams entered this competition, with the winning team (pictured<br />
left, left toright) of Luke Hay,<br />
Nic Dalgety, Finn Brown and<br />
Steven Harris.<br />
They solved fourteen problems<br />
in the allocatedtime.<br />
Thesecond-placed team solved<br />
ten problems, while teams<br />
three and four were very closed<br />
behind solving nine problems<br />
each.<br />

Strong Results at Aoraki Junior BasketballTournament<br />
On Wednesday and Thursday 23and 24 June the Aoraki Junior Boys’and<br />
Junior Girls’ Basketball Tournaments were held, onconsecutive days, at<br />
the EA Networks Centre, <strong>Ashburton</strong> and The SouthernTrust Events Centre<br />
respectively.<br />
Four teams represented College, each playing in AGrade, with some<br />
tight battles fought which provided excitement for players and<br />
spectators.<br />
Results from the dayswere:<br />
Games were comprised of two twelve-minute halves, with three points for<br />
awin, and one foradraw.<br />
Junior Boys –AGrade: 1st Placing for the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Red Team,<br />
and 5th Placing forthe <strong>Ashburton</strong>Blue Team.<br />
The other teams in this grade were Timaru Boys’High School (2nd placed),<br />
St Kevin’s College (3rd placed), Waitaki Boys’ High School, Mountainview,<br />
Roncalli and Mt Hutt Colleges.<br />
