Lighting spectacle for 100th Ashburton electricity lines company EA Networks will mark its 100th anniversary with athreeday lighting spectacle in the Ashburton Domain. The cooperative has partnered with Ashburton District Council to stage Ashburton Glow in the Park. It will run from August 2729 and feature 13 artistic and interactive light installations, including athunder tree, water reflections, glow football, mirror balls, and an archway of trusses designed to mimic the flow of electricity. EA Networks Chief Executive Roger Sutton said Glow in the Park will be aspecial show for the community. The free event would be a spectacular way for the business to mark 100 years serving the district. ‘‘The domainwill be dazzling. We wanttofocus on a celebration that can involve the whole communitywith amazingspecial effects that people of all ages can enjoy,’’ he said. The show will start at 6pmon August 27 with adisplay of fireworksand an official switching on of the light installations. People will be encouraged to follow atrailoflight features beginning at the central domain car park, past the pond, and along the long lawn, looping back to the central car park wherefood vendors will be set up. They can also wear white to make the most of aspecial UV area. Information panels willalso tell EA Networks’ story,from its beginnings as the Ashburton Electric PowerBoard to the present day as aprovider of electricity lines and fibreoptic cablesfor internet. On August 28 and 29 Glow in the Park will operatefrom 5.30 pm until 9.30 pm. Those coming to the show are encouraged to use apublic car park available off Grigg Street near the old tennis courts and picnicarea. Mr Argylehas beenatthe helm of theCancer Society New Zealand board since Octoberlastyear. And asboard presidentheis making sure the board is doing all it cantoachieve the society’s vision to reducethe incidenceand impactof cancernationwide. It is atwo year term. He said the Cancer Society faced many challenges but two which stood out were inequities in the provision of cancerservices, and projections the number of peoplewith cancer would increase by 50 percent within the next 15 years. ‘‘Funding, particularly in the postcovid era, is also a major challengeasthere are so many worthwhile organisations all seeking the charity dollar in this country.’’ Thenumberofpeopleusing servicesprovided by the CancerSociety continuedto increase and there was no end to the resourceswhich were needed, he said.
