Commissioners
push for parks
By Hannah Poling
Staff Writer
The Westland Area Commission continues
to pursue the need for a recreation center
on the westside.
The issue was discussed at the July
commission meeting. Commissioner Janet
Cahill said she spoke to city council members
in regards to the lack of parks and
recreation on the westside of Columbus.
According to Cahill, in their conversation,
a council member had referred to the westside
as a recreation desert.
According to commissioners, a recreation
center would offer families services
in their own community. There are not
many parks on the westside easily accessible
by foot or by bike. The community
wants to keep their kids off of the streets
and engaged in different activities close to
home.
City sets aside funding for crime reduction programs
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther announced $400,000
in funding for two crime reduction programs led by
Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Jessica D’Varga
and Franklin County Prosecutor G. Gary Tyack. The programs
receiving funds are designed to ensure public safety
and reduce recidivism by providing support and resources
to help mostly non-violent offenders successfully navigate
and emerge from their time in the criminal justice system.
“We cannot and will not accept rising crime rates as our
new normal,” said Ginther. “We must continue to address
this issue from every angle, which includes working to educate
and reform our neighbors who engaged in criminal
behavior. This is a community-wide effort, and the partnerships
we are supporting represent the kind of innovate
and thoughtful actions that are needed to build a safer,
more resilient Columbus.”
The Unleashing Potential (UP) program in Judge
D’Varga’s courtroom will receive $200,000 to provide
transformative justice for young adults with moderate-tohigh
risk of recidivism, many of whom are still cognitively
capable of ceasing criminal activities when engaged with
proper guidance, knowledge and resources.
Participation in the program generally lasts one year or
longer and includes access to behavioral health services,
trauma-informed care, parenting support, education and
workforce development, and other public assistance
resources. Upon completion, a participant’s case is
resolved according to a negotiated agreement, which may
include the reduction or dismissal of charges — enabling
graduates of the program to become productive, law-abiding
members of their communities.
“This program will provide support and stability to our
justice-involved 18-25 year olds, setting them up for success
through individualized case management plans that
will greatly reduce the chance that they will come back
into our court system and eliminating barriers to their
achievement. Investing in our youth is an investment in
this community that I believe will make a meaningful and
long-term impact for our city,” said D’Varga.
The city is also allocating $200,000 for the expansion of
the Gun Violence Reduction Initiative in the county prosecutor’s
office, which seeks to decrease illegal gun possession
and, by extension, the resulting gun violence.
Franklin County is currently trending toward 1,200 illegal
around the westside
The summer lunch program runs through Aug. 20. The
meals are offered from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Hilltop Branch
and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Franklinton Branch.
This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, lunches
will be distributed as grab and go meals for kids to take
home.
Melissa Green, liaison for the city’s department of
neighborhoods, said while city leaders explore options
for additional recreation space in the area, residents
could utilize the Prairie Township Community Center.
“The interim has been 20 years,” said commissioner
Nancy Day-Achauer said in response to using the
township’s facility. “A promise was made.”
Commissioners said they are concerned about the
size of the township’s center, saying it may be too small
to accommodate many westside residents.
“I want to make sure that what I am advocating for
is what the commission wants,” said Green. “We want
to link youth and families to what is available now to
keep them off of the streets so that they are safe and
productive.”
Possibilities were discussed for a more timely solution
to the problem such as requiring new housing
developments and apartment complexes to provide
green space and a playground for its residents.
“We are pressing people to come to the westside but
not giving them anything to do once they get here,”
gun possession cases in 2021.
The city’s support will help the prosecutor’s office
expand its personnel to more effectively administer illegal
gun possession cases, which are up 31 percent over 2015
levels and far exceed peer-county caseloads. Prosecuting
attorneys in this unit also work on a case-by-case basis to
determine whether a misdemeanor charge or probation
may be warranted instead of a harsher sentence to avoid
negatively impacting future employment and other opportunities
on a permanent basis.
“Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack’s Gun Unit
assesses every case with an eye toward tailoring a result
that will assist those who are at risk so that they do not
become a danger to the community, that will protect the
public from those who are already a danger to the community
and that will allow those who pose no danger to the
community to resolve their case without a significant negative
impact on their lives,” said John Gripshover, the
unit’s director.
Columbus City Council approved this funding measure
at its July 26 meeting.
Westland Area Commission
The Westland Area Commission is seeking community
minded people who live, work, or own property within the
boundaries of the area to serve on the commission. The
commission boundaries are west of I-270 from the Conrail
railroad tracks to the north, Centerline of I-270 and Big
Run South to the east, Centerline of Grove City Road to
the south and Hellbranch Creek to the west. Find out more
information at cbusareacommissions.org/westland-areacommission.
said commissioner Bill Steimer.
There is available parkland on West Broad Street,
however there is no time line for that development.
“The promises keep coming and the politicians keep
going,” said commissioner Jeff Tanner. “It’s hard
enough to hear, let alone getting on another call with
other city council members to hear the problems with
their recreation centers and that they want another
one. We will take your old one. These are things that
city council doesn’t seem to understand.”
Day-Achauer relayed to the commission the importance
of getting westside representation on the parks
and recreation committee so that the westside has a
voice. Anyone who would like to apply to be on the committee
can do so through the mayor’s office.
In other news, commissioner Shawn Thomas is
resigning from the Westland Area Commission due to
other obligations.
The commission will not have a meeting in August.
It will resume meeting on Sept. 15 at a to be determined
location.

The Prairie Township Community
Center is expanding its class offerings.
At a recent meeting, the township
trustees approved offering photography
classes at the center and approved entering
into a contract with John Conant as a photography
instructor. Conant will be paid
$100 per workshop (not to exceed $500).
The trustees also approved using
Amazing Athletes as a sports program and
camp provider with a fixed rate of compensation
of 70 percent of total registration
fees (not to exceed $6,000) and Jilaine
A local township will work with an outside
contractor for fiscal assistance
through the summer.
At a recent meeting, the Franklin
Township trustees said the township would
work with Jeff Wilcheck for fiscal office
support.
“Jeff continues to work on cleaning up
issues from previous years. He continues to
work on bank reconciliations and is doing a
very good job,” said Nick Dunn, the township’s
fiscal officer. “I have been learning a
lot from Jeff and he has been a great asset
to the township.”
Wilcheck will be working on getting
pension reports correct from prior years
and the township approved an additional
fees (not to exceed $6,000). These personal
service contracts are effective through Dec.
31.
The community center currently has
5,289 total members. Of those members,
approximately 29 percent are township residents.
The center also is slowly gaining
back members, with an average of 100 new
members joining or renewing their membership
each month.
Residents did question why the pool was
still not fully open. Michael Pollack, director
of the center, said they are now offering
swim lessons and pool reservations are
allowed.
In other news, the board approved hiring
The Motz Group to design and construct
the artificial turf for the multi-use
field at the Galloway Road Sports Complex.
200 hours for Wilcheck to complete these
tasks.
At the meeting Franklin Township Fire
Chief James Welch also discussed hiring
issues he is having.
“We are struggling to hire employees
due to a very shallow hiring pool,” he said.
“We hope to be interviewing candidates
soon.”
Franklin Township Police Chief Byron
Smith also provided an update on services
in the township.
“We have been stretching services as
much as we need to and have been able to
avoid stopping any services to the community,”
Smith said. “I would like to set a date
for a special meeting in order to discuss
putting the levy back on the ballot, obtain
opinions and answer questions.”
Recently, the Franklin Township Police
Department asked voters to approve a
7.37-mill permanent levy. This would have
cost residents $737 a year per $100,000
home valuation. However, the levy failed.
As a result, Smith said the department
could have to cut the third shift to operate
within their means. However, Smith says
they are trying to do everything they can to
avoid this.
“The cost of the project is $978,892,”
said Rob Peters, township administrator.
“This is part of the overall sports complex
paid with contributions and a grant
through ODNR.”
Recently, the township celebrated being
awarded $1.5 million from the Ohio Capital
Budget. The money will be used to create
an innovative new field in the township to
make playing sports more accessible to all.
“This is the largest award issued by the
state,” Peters said. “From a programming
perspective, a lot is going to be happening
in the township in the next two years.”
According to Peters, the funds will be
used for the One Field project. The project
includes creating an artificial turf field for
the township that is designed specifically
for individuals with special needs to experience
the joy and camaraderie that comes
from being a part of a team.
The field will have a hard surface, allowing
people in crutches or wheelchairs to use
the field more easily and won’t be as
restricting for them as a natural field
would be. The new field will be used for soccer,
football and other field sports.
The cost to build the field is approximately
$880,000, but it is also part of a
larger project that costs approximately $2
million. The project also includes the
Galloway Road widening, turning lane and
parking lot.
Ever-changing technology and business
strategies keep our fast-paced society moving
forward in countless ways on a regular
basis. With each new breakthrough, it’s
easy to overhear comments echoing off
walls everywhere, “it’s going to be so much
easier now.” At the same time, bouncing off
another wall, you’ll just as often hear, “oh,
I miss the good old days when everything
was so much simpler.” I must admit, with
each passing day, the more I fall into that
latter group and sometimes feel like shouting
out, “stop the world, I want to get off!”
Only a few things seem destined to
remain as the same needless chaotic mess
of stress they were years ago and probably
always will be as our politicians avoid any
true attempts at simplifications like the
plague. The complexities of taxes and
health care come quickly to mind.
The computer age has given us incredible
powers but also a never-ending flagged
notification that the recently updated program
we struggled to input is already obsolete,
and we must again install and learn a
new revision. For years I kept up with the
computer madness at work and at home.
But in my retirement, I now continue to
rapidly lose ground.
Today’s new cars have become more
complicated than James Bond’s cars or the
International Space Station. I just want a
little zip, a good stereo and a/c. I could care
less about all the confusing frills that have
become expensive standard items. I’m betting
I’m not the only one who is ignorant
about what half the buttons and switches
are for or the many new state-of-the-art
computerized features just waiting to be
used but probably never will be. One needs
an engineering degree to drive today’s cars.
But with all the changes coming from
Opinion Page
every angle, none has been more conspicuous
to me than what I’ve seen in the pet
food industry. I’ve had dogs all my life but
having the responsibility of another dog to
raise from puppyhood to hopefully his senior
days has brought to light just how complicated
life has become in the pet food
realm.
You can equate it to the changes in the
grocery store. In days of yore, you’d see a
small section of an aisle for cereal. You’d
have the standard handful of different
cereals to choose from. Today, you’ve got at
least an entire aisle with every variation of
a flake, nut, piece of fruit or disguised as
cereal sugar you can think of. Then, on top
of that, the store has its own cheaper
generic brand that’s often even better quality
than the big-named brand that people
waste their money on. As the saying goes,
you can spend a week one day in the cereal
aisle figuring out which is the best for the
money.
Same with the ice cream aisle. Years
ago, you had just a few options for flavors
and brands. Today there’s an entire aisle
with a multitude of both to choose from
with the store’s generic brand thrown in to
make the decision even tougher.
When I was a boy, you’d basically throw
a bowl of dry food on the ground and the
slobbering dog would devour it in seconds.
Dog food in those days had the nutrient
value of a bag of chips or cookies. There
were no quality controls. But dogs didn’t
complain, they gobbled it up and nobody
thought twice about it or the nutrients they
were getting. Today, if you put a bowl of
some of the healthier food options on the
floor, they’ll give you an evil stare, as if to
say, “you expect me to eat that slop. I won’t
and you can’t make me. You eat it and see
how horrible it is.”
Then the pet food industry began its
explosion. Before long, an entire aisle at
the supermarket was dedicated to dogs.
There were many varieties of dry or wet
canned food with enticing names to catch
the human eye. It became important to
shop on a full stomach because some
sounded better than what you’d be having
for dinner and you didn’t want to be seen
drooling like a dog in the aisle.
Dog food became specific, puppy food,
adult or senior formulas, grain-free, for
sensitive skin, diet, easy digestion, high
protein, breed size, more flavors to choose
from than picking out a donut at a donut
shop, skin and coat, high-energy, glutenfree,
chicken-free, organic, vegetarian, high
fiber. On and on, there was even fresh and
frozen choices. It took no time for the
industry to utilize that marketing trick,
raise the price and shrink the bag. Today,
if you buy anything with any nutrient
value at all, you’d better have smelling
salts nearby at the checkout counter. That
saying, ‘it’s a dog’s world’ has taken on new
meaning.
Thankfully, controls have also tightened
up a bit. In theory, the USDA, FDA and
FIC are all involved in ensuring the
integrity of the pet foods. However, recalls
are in the news all too often along with sad
losses of loved pets. There are many studies
that rank the brands. They list the pros
and cons of each, best and worst with rankings
as five stars down to one star, etc.
Some ingredients all too often come from
overseas where proper controls are lacking.
It’s difficult to find one that doesn’t have
some significant ‘but has…in it’.
As the grocery store pet food boom took
place, competing specialized pet stores
www.columbusmessenger.com
The pet food industry sure has changed over the years
Years ago, I wanted to keep chickens on
my acre-plus property, but like many good
plans, it was not meant to be after a wise
chicken farmer pointed out amateur mistakes
I was bound to make.
For months I scoured do-it-yourself project
pages for a coop I could handle. Well, I
should say that my daughter and I could
handle because she has a natural ability to
assemble, fix or repair things. She would be
my executive chef in construction and I
would be her construction sous chef.
I showed her various designs from a
structure worthy of a Victorian manor to
something little more than a frame covered
in chicken netting–plain and functional,
but not for me.
Hitting a happy medium, I found a simple,
charming house for hens with an
enclosed white clapboard structure, ramp
and a suitable protected outdoor run.
Nothing extravagant, just manageable.
I researched the care of poultry and
skipped over information on breeding. No
roosters in my henhouse. While I can
appreciate an early morning chicken wakeup
call–I probably get up earlier than a
rooster–I did not want to worry about
weeding out fertilized eggs.
I decided to start out with a trio of
hens–three seemed like a manageable
number and I sought the advice of a farmer
before deciding on which breed I wanted to
purchase after we built the coop.
Her first question after I shared my
plans with her: “What are you going to do
with the hens when they stopped producing
eggs?”
Huh? Chickens stop producing eggs
after a few years? Well, I’ll just get more.
She again asked, “What are you going to
do with the chickens that no longer lay
eggs?” before frankly laying out my
options–build a bigger cage to accommodate
more hens or serve the non-producers
for Sunday dinner to make way for fresh
hens.
What? Kill the chickens after they provided
eggs for my family? No way. I’m sure
they would all have names and how can I
dispose of a creature with a cute name, who
spent her productive life feeding me?
“Well, then you’re going to eventually
end up with a coop full of chickens with
expected to be $30
already over $100
Perhaps the
greatest recent
innovation I’ve seen in the pet food industry
is the ability to now order your total pet
needs online from huge website specialized
vendors, for dogs or most any kind of pet.
You can order food, treats, leashes, toys,
basically anything you need, even pharmaceuticals
with a prescription from your vet.
Order one day and it usually arrives at
your doorstep the next day. No muss, no
fuss, no lugging and loading or unloading
on your part. The minimum for free shipping
is basically the cost of a bag of dry dog
food.
Yes, online is a great enhancement for
the customer, although I’m sure it’s been
difficult competition for the grocery and pet
stores. The only drawback, or benefit to
some, I’ve found is the complexity factor of
having so many choices is still present. I
went in to order the other day and there
were 1,373 options listed under the ‘adult’
dry dog food category. You can get lost
cruising amongst the choices. If dogs could
A nice idea, but not the end result I
wanted. So, I threw my design clippings in
the trash and told my daughter the chicken
coop plans that I held close to my heart for
so many years would not happen.
A few days later, for the first time since
we moved into our house, two ducks landed
at the back of our property and wandered
from Mother Nature that she was giving
Celebrating 40 years on the farm
By Rick Palsgrove
Groveport Editor
History will be having a birthday party
down on the farm.
Metro Parks’ Slate Run Living
Historical Farm. - located at 1375 State
Route 674 North, Canal Winchester - will
celebrate its 40th anniversary with an “Ice
Cream Social and Anniversary” program
on Aug. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. The farm will
also be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day.
There is no cost for admission or for the
activities at the working farm, which is a
historical representation of a typical Ohio
small farm in the 1880s.
“There will be games and activities representative
of the time,” said Ann Culek,
farm program manager at Slate Run
Living Historical Farm. “We are delighted
to welcome storyteller Adele Browne, who
was one of our original volunteers, to provide
some entertainment.”
Culek said the event is an ice cream
social, so enjoy a scoop!
“Sorry, it’s not homemade,” said Culek.
“We hope visitors appreciate the advantages
of 2021, when you can just run to the
grocery store and buy a gallon of ice cream
to keep in the freezer for whenever you
want it. In the 1880s, ice cream was a special
treat.”
Consider all the steps necessary to
make ice cream in those days.
“First, a trip to an ice house for a chunk
of ice harvested from a local pond or canal
from the previous winter to crush, then
milking the cow and skimming the cream,
getting eggs from the chickens to add into
custard cooked carefully over a wood burning
cookstove, and then cranking the ice
cream freezer for about an hour before you
enjoyed the treat,” said Culek. “Hopefully
everyone will enjoy their visit here, but,
along with the fun we hope you have and
the memories you make, the farm can get
you thinking, just a bit, about how you live
now compared to then.”
The concept for Slate Run Living
Historical Farm came about after Metro
Parks purchased the land for it over a period
of years in the 1960s.
“The idea of a living historical farm
started to form around the American
bicentennial in 1976 and, after research
and extensive restoration, Slate Run
Living Historical Farm opened to the public
in 1981,” said Culek.
According to Culek, Metro Parks
opened the farm so the public could compare
how land in Central Ohio was managed
through time.
“Many Ohioans lived on farms throughout
the 19th century and the time period of
the 1880s was chosen as a time of great
transformation in how farming was done
and before the large migration of people to
the cities,” said Culek. “It gives visitors a
glimpse into lifestyles, technology, and
choices available to a central Ohio farm
family in the 1880s and a way to compare
the way we live now with those some who
came before.”
Metro Parks Slate Run Living Historical Farm workers Natelle
Ball (left) and Donna Abel working at the cast iron stove in the
1880s era farmhouse kitchen.
Workers at the farm try to show that change is a constant and
all people from all eras and backgrounds adapt to it.
“Sometimes changes improve our lives, some aspects complicate
it,” said Culek. “It makes me chuckle to hear visitors lament
how life in the 1880s was so hard and they would never have survived,
and it was very different in some aspects compared to ours.
But the people who lived on this farm were so proud of their modern
lifestyle: a cook stove versus a fireplace, the new fangled
steam engines and improved steel farm equipment that made
their lives far easier than those of their grandparents era.”
When asked how the farm has changed over the past 40 years,
Culek said it has gotten better with age in many ways.
“When newly opened, the trees were immature, the land bulldozed,
and new fences installed,” said Culek. “After 40 years it
looks settled and I think very realistic. Even with 40 years of
knowledge about a family farm in the 1880s, there is always something
new the staff and volunteers learn to compare and contrast
the lifestyles of those from the past to share with modern visitors.”
She said especially helpful is original source material like
newspapers and books available on the Internet.
“The staff once spent hours at in-person auctions and antique
stores and now we find many items on eBay or through online
searches,” said Culek.
The farm is an good place to bring people of all ages as there is
something for everyone to enjoy and learn.
“The toys and games, the no admission charge, and the animals
are some of the main draws,” said Culek. “It is generally a quiet
place that offers a break from your electronics and a chance to be
outside and engage with your friends and family. It is heartening
to see how much fun some families have just shelling corn, poking
through the garden, and playing on the swing.”
Culek said a favorite aspect of the farm for all the staff and volunteers
who work there is the connections made with visitors.
“Sometimes it is the ‘light bulb’ moment of realizing milk is
warm when it comes out of the cow,” said Culek. “It is fun to see
people try something for the first time, like digging a potato out of
the ground. We also learn from our visitors who come from all
parts of the community, from around the United States, and sometimes
the world. Their stories and experiences will be part of history
some day. We feel it is a privilege to have the opportunity to
work at Slate Run Living Historical Farm and to have so many
positive interactions with visitors.”

City’s Triage Pod program showing early success
Mayor Andrew Ginther recently joined
City Council President Shannon Hardin
and leaders from public safety and public
health to highlight the effectiveness of the
Alternative Response Pilot Program, which
aims to provide more robust and precise
emergency-response experiences citywide
while reducing reliance on police and fire
forces in matters where other city or social
services are better suited to resolve the situation.
The six-week pilot, announced by
Ginther in May 2021, imbedded a “Triage
Pod” consisting of a social worker, emergency
communications dispatcher and
paramedic in 9-1-1 dispatch to triage calls
involving mental health, addiction and
other social determinants of health. The
first two weeks of the program focused on
developing criteria and polices for transferring
calls to the Pod, training for staff
members and testing technology. The Pod
managed live calls during weeks three
through six. Data from the pilot was collected
over a span of 72 operational hours
from June 7 through July 2.
Of the calls received by the Pod, 62.5
percent did not require an immediate
police or fire dispatch. Forty-eight percent
were either fully resolved by the Pod or
redirected to local community resources.
For the calls that were resolved without
police or fire dispatch, zero called back to 9-
1-1 or required dispatch within 24 hours of
around the westside
OhioHealth will host a COVID-19 vaccination
held at Westland High School, 146
Galloway Road in Galloway. To schedule
an appointment, call 614-566-8187. Walkin
their initial contact. When calls required a
law enforcement response, the Pod actively
communicated with first responders, providing
de-escalation and pre-arrival information
to help ensure a successful outcome.
“What this program so clearly demonstrates
is the need to strengthen and diversify
our front-line responses so that police
officers can focus on what they were always
intended to do: address violent crime and
keep our neighborhoods safe,” said
Ginther. “There is no ‘one-size-fits-all
approach’ to public health and safety. We
must expand our resources and expertise to
better reflect the needs of our community
and ensure that even more people are
“Society has long asked safety officers to
answer every problem in our community,
whether it is a car crash, homelessness or
violence,” said Hardin. “This pilot led to
more follow-up for residents in need of
resources, no one going to jail, and a better
deployment of taxpayer dollars. The city
will continue making improvements to
build out this program through partnerships,
Plans are underway to expand the Pod’s
hours of operation and build additional
triage and follow-up units. Staff also continues
inform expansion efforts.
This photo was taken in the 1930s looking southeast from the northwest corner of
Sullivant Avenue and Central Avenue. The Essex drugstore occupied the featured
building at the southwest corner. The structure still exists today, has recently been
painted, and appears to be undergoing renovations with storefronts on the first
floor and residential apartments on the second. The two buildings in the photo on
the southeast corner have long since been replaced with a Marathon gas station
and convenience store. The trolley car is part of the Columbus Interurban, a public
transportation route that operated in the 1920s and 1930s. The one-way track traveled
in a loop that went west on Town Street, south on Central, west on Sullivant,
north on Hague, west on Broad Street to the railroad tracks near Wilson Road,
where it would turn around, and then back east on Broad to downtown.
The graduation cap has remained a hallmark of ceremonies
Gymnastics is one of the most rewarding
physical activities that a child can experience. It
boosts self confidence, physical fitness, and life
skills. Fliptastic! Gymnastics has been in the
Hilliard area for the past 29 years and offers gymnastics
and tumbling in their 12,000+ sq. ft facility.
Their certified instructors teach both recreational
and competitive gymnastics in a safe and
structured environment.
The gym offers a diverse curriculum to
Graduation ceremonies are a tradition
that dates back to the first high schools and
universities. While many aspects of graduation
ceremonies have evolved over the
years, the graduation cap has remained a
hallmark of such ceremonies.
Graduation caps are one of the most visible
aspects of graduation dress. Many
scholars believe the mortarboard style cap
graduates don was developed from the
biretta, a similar-looking Italian hat worn
by Roman Catholic clergy. In the 12th and
13th centuries, students and teachers typically
wore clerical clothing because the
church was highly influential at this time.
Medieval universities helped inspire academic
dress, including the familiar graduation
cap.
Mortarboards are shaped like a square,
perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance
The facility has three separate gym areas for age
Many graduation caps were initially
black or gray. When color photography
became the norm in the 20th century,
schools began to use gowns and caps in different
shades because they would show up
in photographs. Schools often coordinate
caps and gowns so their colors reflect their
official school colors.
While certain degrees warrant different
styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard
caps are relatively standard. In addition
to the cap, there is a single button at
the top. Tassels hang from these buttons.
At commencement, tassels are traditionally
worn on the right side of the cap and
then moved to the left once graduates
receive their diplomas.
Graduation caps are part of the larger
scope of academic dress that comprises
school traditions. Millions of graduates
across the globe will don their caps and toss
them into the air later in celebration of
their hard work.
Westland High School grad finds fulfillment serving in Navy
A 2018 Westland High School graduate
is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the
deployed Independence-variant littoral
combat ship USS Charleston. Airman Elisa
Morales joined the Navy as an aviation
machinist’s mate shortly after graduating
high school and is a member of Helicopter
Sea Combat Squadron, which is currently
assigned to the Charleston.
“My older brother was in the National
Guard and I definitely knew I wanted to do
some form of military so I could go to college,”
said Morales. “My mentor told me
about how I could travel and do interesting
things in the Navy as well as go to college
after, so I started looking into it.”
With the help of those close to her,
Morales was able to come into the service
more prepared.
“My parents, mentor and teachers were
always pushing me,” said Morales. “I think
being pushed every now and then when I
needed it is what set me up for success.”
Now, Morales spends her time working
on the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter. Her
role is critical for flight operations.
According to Morales, while the Navy
has not always been the easiest, she is glad
to be serving.
“There’s good and bad days, but the further
I go, the more rewarding it becomes,”
said Morales. “It made me aware of big
things that are going out in the world and
get to take part in them. I didn’t understand
how the things I do add up to the big
picture at first. I feel like people need to
realize that as small as their job is, it contributes
to something bigger.”
In Entertainment
“Jungle Cruise” embraces fun and silliness
Dwayne Johnson may get a lot of criticism thrown
his way for his inability to act on a level beyond ‘pleasant
man,’ ‘sarcastic man,’ and ‘vaguely annoyed man,’
but where he is able to surpass his more talented peers
is with his ability to sell a movie.
Since his surprisingly successful transition from
professional wrestler with a sharp eyebrow game to a
bona fide movie star and box office draw, he has been
featured in plenty of trash films but he is almost
always the best thing about said trash film.
It could be due to his charisma, which rolls off the
screen like sweat coming down his well-shaped head
(or biceps and chest, depending on the film), but I
think it has more to do with his presentation of the
material. It always seems like he is having a great
time doing his job, no matter how awful the plot, dialogue
or anything else that is giving off a rotten stench.
Because of this endearing quality of his, I’ll usually
make it a point to check out his latest project (though
four years later I still regret wasting my time on
“Baywatch”) and that is what put me into the path of
“Jungle Cruise.”
As it is loosely based on the adventure ride in
Disneyland, I have to admit I had very low expectations
for this film. In general, movies based on amusement
rides raise my bad film antenna so I was immediately
suspicious of this one, even with the added
presence of some truly fantastic actors like Emily
Blunt, Paul Giamatti, Jesse Plemons and Edgar
Ramirez.
Shockingly, my initial assessment was mostly
wrong. Though “Jungle Cruise” is rather dumb, it is
the best kind of dumb film. It is the kind that knows
how silly it is, wholeheartedly embraces that silliness,
and just has fun with the nonsensical twists and turns
within. The mood in this film is a bit infectious, and I
couldn’t stop myself from liking it though I really
wanted to.
Taking place in the early 1900s, it begins with
Blunt’s character Dr. Lily Houghton who is on a life’s
quest to locate an ancient artifact that could lead her
to a mystical tree in the Amazon. Believing in the legend
of its incredible healing properties, she has for
years sought sponsors to fund an expedition in order to
“revolutionize science” but has been rebuffed at every
turn solely for her gender.
Believing her brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall)
may have better luck at appealing to the funds of men,
she enlists him to give her presentation in her stead;
instead, that plan goes belly up when he
smudges her notes and nerves start to get
the best of him. Reminding him via notes to
stall to give her time, she breaks into the
antiquities room at the all-male university
to look for the relic.
Because this is a movie where things go
wrong often, things go wrong during her
quasi heist. Luckily, she is as plucky as
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
Evelyn Carnahan in “The
Mummy” and is able to snatch
that treasure before a mysterious
man with a mysterious
accent (Plemons) is able to get
his hands on it.
Though concerned by this
turn of events but not too terribly,
Lily and MacGregor jettison off to the Amazon
where she enlists swindler Frank Wolff (Johnson) to
lead them upriver on his boat La Quila. For his part,
he tries to get Lily to change her mind as the waters
are treacherous and the legend nothing but a myth,
but she is undeterred.
Shortly after beginning their journey, the odd boat
fellows (the sarcastic man with a love for puns, the
educated woman who prefer pants, and the other man
who is far out of his depths and comforts) discover that
they are not the only ones on this quest to find the
mystical tree. Now, not only do they have to compete
with that mysterious man with the mysterious accent
who mysteriously has a submarine, but also an army
of cursed conquistadors who are determined to get the
petals of that tree for their own nefarious purpose.
There is a lot of exposition on the myths and legends
featured in this film and, at times, it becomes too
bogged down in its own storytelling. But despite however
many times the legend is reiterated, the film manages
to provide plenty of fun despite those writing hiccups.
This strength can largely be attributed to the
cast, and not just its main stars of Johnson and Blunt
though they are great, and great together in a buddy
cop kind of way.
Everyone in this film seems like they are having a
great time with their roles — whether they are doing a
cameo bit like Giamatti who plays businessman who
teaches his parrot to tattle on Frank, or a larger part
like Plemons who hams up his man of mystery — and
that, in turn, creates a fun experience for the audience.
And that is really what “Jungle Cruise” is as its core: a
willfully fun movie that permits the audience to get on
in the fun action too. Grade: B
