No rides at
Ox Roast
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The West Jefferson Community Association
was unable to secure a ride company
for this year’s Ox Roast, so they are asking
the community to help fill the entertainment
gap.
For the last several months, association
leaders kept in touch with the ride company
they used the past several years, checking
on their operational status through changes
in pandemic restrictions. By the time restrictions
lifted, the family-owned company
had split into two separate companies.
“One family was able to open up, but the
one we were dealing with could not,” said
Jeff Pfeil, association president.
Organizers searched for other ride companies
in Ohio, as well as out of state, with
no luck. All the companies still in business
have engagements for Labor Day weekend,
Pfeil said.
The 2021 Ox Roast will still go on. There
will still be watermelon, hotdog, pie, and ice
cream eating contests, a kiddie pedal pull,
car show and live music, but the association
needs the community’s help to round out
the entertainment options.
On July 27, the group posted a plea on
their Facebook page: “We are hoping that
any organization or group, such as 4-H,
church, school or any other type of group
can come up with one hour of entertainment,
contest, game or educational type of
event to make this the best Ox Roast possible.”
They then listed suggestions, such as
water balloon games, cornhole, karaoke,
and meet-and-greets and listed available
time slots over the festival’s three days,
Sept. 4-6.
The post generated dozens of suggestions,
from a talent show, a baking contest
and wildlife/nature exhibits to inflatables,
water slides and bingo.
“There were a lot of good ideas, but unfortunately
a lot of them cost money to
bring in or require manpower. This year,
we’re looking for something that people
could donate their time and energy to in
order to help everybody out,” Pfeil said.
Because the Ox Roast did not take place
last year, the association is short on funds.
One way the festival generates money is
through rides. The way the ride contract
works, the association does not pay the ride
company to come to the festival. Instead,
for delivery and installation in September.
New play equipment on the way
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
New ways to swing, slide, climb and
glide are coming to Garrette Park this fall.
The village of West Jefferson has ordered
all new playground equipment as
part of an overhaul of the park that will
cost between $500,000 and $550,000. The
project also includes construction of a
20x36-foot open-sided shelter house.
“We have been discussing how all of our
parks need upgrades,” said John Mitchell,
West Jefferson’s public service director.
“We decided to start with Garrette Park
since we just purchased it, it’s in the center
of town, and it’s in the worst shape as far
as play equipment and amenities.”
The village purchased the park land
from Jefferson Local Schools in December
2018. The purchase encompassed a total of
5.4 acres, including land at the corner of
Frey and Fellows avenues, formerly home
to Frey Elementary School.
“We’ve already removed the old play
equipment and excavated and prepared the
ground,” Mitchell said. “The upgrades are
way overdue. We’re starting from scratch.”
The playground will feature one cluster
of equipment geared toward children ages
2 to 5 years old, another cluster for children
ages 5 to 12 years old, and several freestanding
pieces of play equipment.
The area for the 2- to 5-year-olds includes
equipment that is accessible to chil-
A gravity rail will allow children to glide on a swing down a tubular rail. This piece of
equipment is slated for delivery to Garrette Park sometime in October.
dren of all abilities. One example is the
“sway fun,” a glider with room for two
wheelchairs, benches for other passengers,
and a playtable with cupholders. Nearby
are the freestanding “omnispin spinner”
and “we-saw.” The spinner is a merry-goround
of sorts featuring molded seating;
children sit inside while others push from
outside to make the apparatus spin. The
we-saw is a four-person, wheelchair accessible
seesaw.
The equipment for the younger children
also includes several climbing options, a
small double slide, and two items that are
all about making sound—a rain sound
wheel panel and a bongo drums panel.
The equipment for the 5- to 12-yearolds
includes three kinds of slides, six
climbing options, a circular horizontal ladder,
and a “swiggleknots bridge” that requires
kids to make their way across a
short expanse using ropes, disc footpads,
and suspended ball knots. The ring-a-bell
panel lets children make music.
A gravity rail is one of the other freestanding
components. A swing glides along
a tubular course, producing an experience
that combines the feeling of ziplining with
riding a rollercoaster.
The playground also will include a sixswing
swingset (two of the swings feature
molded seats with harnesses) and a “curva
Plain City kindergarteners learn about safety
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Ethan Carney was on a mission.
After learning about fire safety and prevention
at Safety Town—held July 26-29 at
Plain City Elementary—the rising kindergartener
walked through his home, making
observations about potential hazards and
possible escape routes to take in case of an
emergency.
When he discussed his findings with his
parents, he asked for their official plans for
exiting the premises safely should there be
a fire.
Jody Carney, Ethan’s mother, said she
was caught off guard by her son’s request.
She and her husband could have made up
an answer on the spot but chose to be honest
and tell their son they did not have a plan.
“It was quite embarrassing to admit,” she
said.
The Carneys promised Ethan they would
soon have a plan, one they would practice
together. Jody said she is proud her son
learned something new and took the initiative
to put that knowledge into action.
Until last month, more than a decade
had passed since Plain City last hosted
Safety Town, a national program through
which local first responders and safety experts
teach children about a broad range of
safety issues.
Knowing the importance of those lessons,
a group of Plain City area mothers worked
to bring the program back to the community.
It was the winter of 2020 when Carney
kindergarteners-to-be that participated in Safety Town July 26-29
at Plain City Elementary.
Elias Wenzel practices the correct way to cross a pedestrian
crosswalk.
was brainstorming programs to offer to Plain City residents. As
Plain City’s mayor, she said she is always looking for events everyone
can enjoy but specifically wanted to find something for young
children who were negatively impacted by COVID-19 restrictions
and closures.
“Last year was a year of disruptions, and I wanted to find something
fun where they could socialize with their peers but also learn
something along the way,” she said.
Carney sought advice from Kristin DeWitt, Amy Dobbelaere,
Tamara Engle, Amber Martinez and Missy McCoy. They found a
perfect program, one that had already been in their community
years ago but needed to make a comeback.
“Safety Town is a wonderful tool for children,” said Dobbelaere,
a former educator with Circleville City Schools. “Not only does it
teach them to become comfortable around police officers and firefighters,
but it also provides them with lessons, potentially life-saving
lessons, on how to be safe on the bus, how to be safe walking to
school, how to be safe at home, at the pool, and how to be safe
around people you do not know.
“I was involved in Safety Town as a child, and those lessons that
I learned had such an impact on my life. It was our hope that that
knowledge would stick with these children as they grew, too.”
With a plan in mind to re-establish Safety Town, Carney reached
out to local safety experts to see if they would lend their time and
expertise to the cause. She said all the departments she contacted
were eager to help.
“It has truly turned out to be a community collaboration,” she
said.
Participating agencies included the Plain City Police Department,
Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Pleasant Valley Fire Department,
Union County Health Department, the Humane Society
of Madison County, local poison control agencies and the village’s
aquatics center.
SAFETY
Continued from page 1
With the various health and safety agencies
on board, it boiled down to community
interest. Because the program is designed
for kindergarteners, organizers worried
about a low turnout. That was not the case.
According to Carney, more than 60 children
who will be kindergarteners this fall signed
up to attend Safety Town.
Tate Byars was among them. He said he
learned many informative lessons, especially
the importance of not consuming
household chemicals.
“You really shouldn’t drink cleaning supplies,”
he stated.
He said that in addition to learning, he
had a lot of fun making new friends and riding
the bikes at Safety Town.
Castle Cray also said he had “a lot of fun”
riding the bikes, though he did get annoyed
by the wait times at the traffic lights.
Michael Talbert, a sheriff’s deputy, joked
that he could have handed out hundreds of
citations as the children explored the rules
of the road.
Amber Martinez, one of the local moms
who helped to organize the event, said she
was “so excited” to see Safety Town back in
the community.
“This program, especially this station
where they learn traffic rules, is so important,”
she explained. “It allows (children) to
know what to do when they cross the road
and to really look out for their safety because
sometimes the drivers are not looking
out for theirs.”
spinner,” a small piece of equipment that
lets children have fun with centrifugal force.
Most of the playground equipment will
arrive by Sept. 10. Installation will take one
to two weeks. The gravity rail likely will arrive
in October.
“Hopefully, everything will be in place
before the snow flies,” Mitchell said.
The village secured a $200,000 state capital
grant to help pay for the project. The
rest of the funding will come from the village’s
park fund and general fund.
The costs are: roughly $200,000 for the
playground equipment; $145,500 for instalthey
get a percentage of the company’s
sales, typically 20 percent to 25 percent.
In addition to the loss of revenue, the association
still needs to pay its year-round
bills. The group owns the Ox Roast grounds
and, therefore, is responsible for costs associated
with things like utilities, insurance,
and mowing.
“We can’t afford to go out this year and
pay entertainers to come in and do things
for us,” Pfeil said.
“It’s expensive to put on the Ox Roast—
entertainment, the stage, buying the meat
PARK
It wasn’t all bike rides, climbing out of smoke houses
and singing along to safety songs. Participants also got to
meet Andor, Plain City’s K-9 police officer, walk around
the neighborhood, learn about gun safety, and hear stories
from Philip Greenbaum, a detective with the Plain City
Police Department, about “stranger danger.” Though he
has many stories about that subject from his job, Greenbaum
stuck with reading “The Berenstain Bears Learn
About Strangers” by Stan and Jan Berenstain, as it is
more age appropriate.
While he had to read the same book over and over,
Greenbaum said he was happy to do it to teach children
how to be safe around people they do not know.
“We don’t want to scare these kids too badly, but we
have to remind them that not everyone out there has good
intentions,” he said.
Greenbaum ended his lesson by making the kids promise
not to run away from their parents or guardians while
they are shopping together, and to always tell them where
they will be if they leave the house to play.
“They want to protect you, but you have to help them
do that sometimes,” Greenbaum explained.
Courey Leer, whose daughter, Dorothy, will be a kindergartener
this school year, said she appreciates the efforts
that went into re-establishing Safety Town, especially the
lessons safety officials imparted upon the children.
She said Dorothy was ready to act when a small grill
fire got out of control the other day.
“She told her dad to stop, drop, and roll,” Courey said.
“Though he was not on fire, the intention was good, and I
appreciate her quick action.”
The organizing mothers said this year’s Safety Town
was such a success they plan to bring it back next year and
into the future.
“We are hoping it will grow next year,
and that it will continue growing in the
years to come,” Dobbelaere said.
for the Ox Roast sandwiches. It probably
costs us close to $20,000 just to put the Ox
Roast on,” he continued.
The association is starting this year with
$9,000 in their coffers. Usually, they start
with $17,000 to $18,000, Pfeil said.
The group is thankful for the many sponsors
who always step up, and they welcome
donations big and small.
Anyone who would like to make a monetary
donation or volunteer their group to fill
a time slot with some form of entertainment
$100,000 to $150,000 for installation of a
sidewalk, asphalt, excavation, removal of
It makes me mad
‘Jungle Cruise’ full of silliness
A segment of
society goes underserved—shut
out of offers,
places
Linda Dillman
discounts and
other perks—because they are not technologically “connected.”
I’m talking about people who are not tethered to the Internet
because of the high cost of connection or one of many other viable
reasons.
It makes me mad.
My mother recently received a coupon from a new gas station
moving into the central Ohio market for a considerable pergallon
discount for three months. When she went to the station,
an attendant asked for her email address to complete the
process.
Needless to say, that process stopped dead in its tracks because
Mom did not have the requisite email address. She could
not complete the application for the company’s loyalty card
without an association with the Internet.
This is not an isolated incident. It happens on a routine
basis.
And it makes me mad.
Want to enter a drawing from a trusted company? They don’t
trust you if you do not have that golden ticket…an email address.
Door closed.
Want to sign up for legitimate free offers? Unless you have
a legitimate email address, don’t bother. No freebies for you!
Want to read the latest zoo newsletter? It’s online. Want to
get the best deals on grocery items at your local store? Digital
coupons are the answer. Have a complaint, compliment or concern?
More often than not you have to access the Internet.
And it makes me mad.
The practice is discriminatory for those without an email address,
old or young. And because this population of people are
a minority with limited access to a much larger population, they
are ignored.
It is not right and it is not fair, but I fear it is a problem that
will be with us as long as there are people not tethered to technology
and the Web.
And it makes me mad.
Linda Dillman is a Messenger staff writer.
Dwayne Johnson may get a lot of criticism for his
acting abilities, but he surpasses his more talented
peers in his ability to sell a movie.
Since his surprisingly successful transition from a
professional wrestler with a sharp eyebrow game to a
bona fide box office draw, he has appeared in plenty of
trash films but he is almost always the best thing about
them.
It could be his charisma, which rolls off the screen
like sweat coming down his well-shaped head (or biceps
and chest, depending on the film), but I think it has
more to do with his presentation of the material. He always
seems to be having a great time doing his job, no
matter how awful the plot, dialogue or anything else.
Because of this endearing quality, I usually check
out his latest projects (though four years later, I still regret
wasting my time on “Baywatch”), and that is what
put me in the path of “Jungle Cruise.”
As the film is loosely based on a Disneyland adventure
ride, I had very low expectations, even with the
added presence of some truly fantastic actors like Emily
Blunt, Paul Giamatti, Jesse Plemons and Edgar
Ramirez.
Shockingly, my assumptions were mostly wrong.
Though “Jungle Cruise” is rather dumb, it is the best
kind of dumb. It wholeheartedly embraces silliness and
nonsensical twists and turns. The mood is infectious. I
couldn’t stop myself from liking it.
Set in the early 1900s, the film begins with Blunt’s
character, Dr. Lily Houghton, who is on a quest to locate
an ancient artifact that could lead her to a mystical tree
in the Amazon. Believing the legend of its healing properties,
she has sought sponsors to fund an expedition to
“revolutionize science” but has been rebuffed due to her
gender.
Believing her brother, MacGregor (Jack Whitehall),
might have better luck, Lily enlists him to give her presentation
to potential donors. That plan goes awry when
he smudges her notes and nerves get the best of him.
Meanwhile, Lily breaks into the antiquities room at the
all-male university to look for the relic.
Though things go wrong, she is as plucky as Evelyn
Carnahan in “The Mummy” and manages to snatch the
treasure before a mysterious man with a mysterious accent
(Plemons) get his hands on it.
Lily and MacGregor then jet off to the Amazon where
Lily enlists swindler Frank Wolff (Johnson) to lead
them upriver on his boat, La Quila. Frank tries to
change Lily’s mind because the waters are treacherous
and he thinks the legend is a myth. She is undeterred.
Shortly after beginning their journey, the odd boat
fellows (the sarcastic man with a love for puns, the educated
woman who prefers pants, and the other man
who is far out of his comfort zone) discover they are not
the only ones on a quest to find the mystical tree. Not
only are they competing with a mysterious man with a
mysterious accent who mysteriously has a submarine,
but also an army of cursed conquistadors determined to
get the petals of that tree for their own nefarious purpose.
Sometimes the film gets bogged down in its own storytelling,
but no matter how many times the legend is
repeated, the film provides plenty of fun. Credit for this
goes to the cast—and not just its main stars, Johnson
and Blunt, who are great together in a buddy cop kind
of way.
Everyone in this film seems like they are having a
great time with their roles, whether it’s a cameo bit like
Giamatti who plays a businessman who teaches his parrot
to tattle on Frank, or a larger part like Plemons who
hams up his man of mystery. That, in turn, creates a
fun experience for the audience.
Ministry loans medical equipment at no charge
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Several weeks ago, London resident
Ruthanne Johnson had surgery. For her recovery
at home, she needed a walker, a
cane, and other medical equipment. She
didn’t need to go far—or spend money—to get
that equipment.
She simply turned to Carolyn Garver, a
fellow member of London First Presbyterian
Church, who runs the Health Equipment
Loan Ministry (HELM) at the church.
“It was really nice to know the equipment
was available—and free. It really came in
handy for the needs that I had,” said Johnson,
who has since returned the equipment.
Garver collects and loans out a wide
array of medical equipment, not just to
church members but to anyone anywhere
who has a need. Hospital beds, wheelchairs,
walkers, bedside commodes, raised toilet
seats, shower chairs, orthopedic equipment,
wound care equipment, canes, crutches—you
name it, and she probably has it.
“I don’t rent it or lease it. I just loan it,”
Garver said. “There’s no cost to the individual.
They can keep it as long as they need
it. I just ask that when they are finished
with it, they return it. It can be anywhere
from a week to a year or more.”
Garver started the ministry in 2018, a
couple of years after moving to London from
Greeneville, Ohio. Prior to the move, she
volunteered then served as assistant manager
for a medical equipment loan ministry
in Covington.
“People were coming from Dayton,
Columbus, Springfield, Lima—all over—for
equipment,” she said.
The person in charge of the Covington
ministry suggested Garver start her own
ministry once she settled in London to make
access to free medical equipment easier for
OVI checkpoint
The West Jefferson Post of the Ohio State
Highway Patrol, with assistance from the
Madison County Sheriff’s Office and London
Police Department, conducted an OVI checkpoint
from 9 p.m. to midnight July 30 on
U.S. Route 42 near Mile Post 8 in London.
During that time, 278 vehicles passed
through the checkpoint. No vehicles were
diverted to a secondary area. No arrests
were made for impaired driving.
The checkpoint and saturation patrols
are funded by fines from impaired drivers
and other federal funding. The goal is to
make motorists more aware of the impaired
driver problem in Ohio, help bring about a
reduction in the number of alcohol- and
drug-related crashes, and deter and intercept
impaired drivers.
“Even with the short delays, officers
working the event received a tremendous
amount of public support during the checkpoint
and wanted to thank the motoring
public for helping to make our roadways
safer,” said Lt. Robert Curry, West Jefferson
Post commander.
Carolyn Garver displays a small portion of the medical equipment
she loans out at no charge through her Health Equipment Loan
Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in London.
more people in the region.
“I started by putting a notice in the church bulletin, asking for
unneeded equipment,” Garver said.
Her fellow parishioners stepped up.
“I have a bunch now,” she said.
The church and donors also have been gracious in providing storage
space for the ministry, said Garver who cleans and sanitizes
the equipment and makes sure it works before loaning it out. In addition
to equipment, she also offers supplies such as adult diapers.
She noted that larger items, including hospital beds, wheelchairs
and some walkers, require a doctor’s or therapist’s note. The other
items do not.
“A friend of mine’s brother-in-law was having a hard time getting
in and out of bed. He was sleeping on an air mattress on the
floor. She came to me and asked to borrow a hospital bed. He got a
doctor’s note. She said it’s been a lifesaver,” Garver said.
To learn more about HELM, borrow equipment, or donate equipment,
call London First Presbyterian Church, (740) 852-1215, or
email Garver at clngvr@gmail.com.
Garver also welcomes monetary donations to cover the cost of
cleaning supplies and to fill requests for equipment she does not
have. Donations made out to HELM can be mailed to the church,
for school attendance nor is it required for participation in
any school activities. However, current public health requirements
still dictate that individuals in the community are required to quarantine
or isolate under the following conditions:
• A fully vaccinated person does not have to quarantine following
known exposure to a COVID-19 case if the vaccinated person remains
symptom-free.
• An unvaccinated person must follow normal quarantine procedures
if he/she is exposed to someone who
tests positive for COVID-19. The quarantine
period is seven to 10 days following the
exposure. Madison County Public Health
will set and manage the quarantine period.
• Anyone who tests positive for COVID-
19 must follow normal isolation procedures.
The isolation period is not less than 10
days. Madison County Public Health will
set and manage the isolation period.
An individual is considered fully vaccinated
two weeks after the second dose of
the Pfizer vaccine. Questions regarding the
vaccine or policies on quarantine or isolation
should be directed to Madison County
Public Health.
