Double Ninth Festival
Chinese Poetry Salon
October 14th is the “”Double Ninth Festival”” in the traditional Chinese festival according to Lunar calendar. In the
autumn scenery of the homeland, you can climb mountains, appreciate the autumn flowers and respect the elderly.
This is the theme of the Double Ninth Festival. Under the Covid-19 pandemic, the Chinese people in Australia are
even more missing their loved ones, especially during the lockdown periods. Poetry expresses aspirations and
recites sentiments. In this Chinese poetry night, let us enjoy the beauty of poetry and express our emotions with
voice. Firm our faith and pray for peace!
Australian Chinese Writers Festival and The Art of Voice Melbourne Australia will co-organize this recitation event
Sandra Hogan: With My Little Eye
in conversation with Claire Halliday
Join us for this in conversation event as author Sandra Hogan discusses
her very funny true story of three children recruited by their parents to work
for ASIO in the 1950s. Growing up in the 1950s, the three Doherty children
were trained by their parents to memorise car number plates, to spot
unusual behaviour on the street and, most important of all, to avoid drawing
attention to themselves. The children became unwitting foot soldiers in
Australia’s battle against Soviet infiltration in the Cold War.
They attended political rallies, stood watch on houses owned by communist
sympathisers, and insinuated themselves into the UFO Society. In 1956 the
Doherty family went on a beach holiday with Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov,
the famous Soviet defectors, who were hiding from Soviet assassins.
Dudley and Joan Doherty swore their children to secrecy, and for decades,
they didn’t even discuss among themselves the work they did for ASIO. ‘With
My Little Eye’ is a poignant and very funny account of a peculiar childhood
in 1950s suburban Australia. Zoom invitation will be emailed to registered
participants prior to session.
Bad language has been used in all sort of ways in our
history: to defy authority, as a form of liberation and
subversion, and as a source of humour and creativity.
It has also been used to oppress and punish, notably
Indigenous Australians and women. Revealing the
fundamental tensions, conflicts, preoccupations and
anxieties that have shaped our past and continue
to shape our present, the story of bad language
is a story about what it means to be Australian.
Play is not just fun and games. Our deep drive to play
playing. No part of human history is untouched by the
way we play. In this session, Daniel Teitelbaum will
signalled a sartorial retreat from the comfortable and
elegant modernity women enjoyed before the war,
with a return to an elaborate Edwardian artifice of
womanhood, complete with full skirts, crinolines, frills
A memoir of food, family and Greece. In 1955, in a
village in Greece that was marred by war and poverty,
Giannoula and Fotios Panagiotopoulos dreamed of
providing a better future for their children. Australia, it
was rumoured, was a land of opportunity where hard
work brought reward. Leaving behind family and friends,
they set off to make a new home on the other side of
the world. Half a lifetime later, under the shade of a fig
tree and in the dappled Melbourne sunlight, Giannoula
regales her youngest daughter, Olympia, with stories
of her homeland and journey. An evocative exploration
of the ties that bind, Beneath the Fig Leaves weaves
an irresistible tapestry of family, food and history to
stir the heart and senses. Born in Melbourne to Greek
parents, Olympia Panagiotopoulos comes from a long
line of storytellers who inspired in her a love of folklore,
myths and legends. Themes of identity and belonging
are central to her writing and she is a strong advocate
for celebrating bold female characters – in story and in
everyday life.
