She would teach classes to 

children with cancer at the annual 

Camp Quality camp each summer, 

and constantly fundraiser for the 

cause for over 20 years. 

Denise Wood, to whom Mary 

passed leadership of the line 

dancing club, estimated Mary, 

who she remembered as caring 

and encouraging, had raised about 

$50,000. 

This had been done from methods 

ranging from raffles and craft 

sales, to donating the payments the 

club received to dance at the yearly 

Spencer Park gala.

‘She was a pretty independent, feisty woman’

to dance, and Mather recalls 

her mother visiting old peoples’ 

homes to teach them some 

moves. 

“She’d go and see the older 

people, even though she was 

probably older than them,” 

she said. 

“She just loved people, she was 

a true extrovert.” 

Even as her health started to 

fail last year, she would still attend 

line dancing classes, giving 

instructions and advice. 

This was typical of the tenacity 

and positivity her mother embodied, 

her daughter said. 

“She would always find the 

good thing, the joy, the positive 

aspects.” 

She also enjoyed the fact that 

line dancing brought joy to those 

who might be lonely, and as it did 

not require a partner, it was suitable 

for single people, widows, 

and widowers. 

Mary’s life was not always easy. 

Born in England in 1933, she 

lived through the Blitz. 

“I remember her saying the war 

years in London were terrible, 

bombs night after night.” 

She left England aged 17 to stay 

in Kenya with relatives, and although 

the country was unstable, 

she stayed upbeat, enjoying the

Shortly after moving to New 

Zealand, her first husband left 

her and moved back to Kenya. 

“She brought me up on 

her own. She was a pretty 

independent, feisty woman. This 

is before feminism was really 

defined.” 

“She had to argue a few times.” 

Mather remembers choosing a 

bike for 10th birthday in the early 

1970s. 

Her mother was not allowed 

to buy it because she needed 

her husbands’ name for the hire 

purchase agreement. 

“We had to leave that shop 

and leave the bike because they 

wouldn’t sign it off. The next day, 

mum was on the phone to the big 

boss.” 

In the end, the bike made it 

home. 

“She had perseverance . . . those 

were the women who really trailblazed 

for us, I think.” 

Aged in her 60s, Mary married 

“the love of her life”, the late Art 

Stanley-Shepherd.

Always a keen dancer, she 

took to it quickly after being 

introduced to line dancing in the 

1970s. 

“I always thought she’d die on 

the dance floor.” 

Even when unwell, Mary 

took care to look stylish, and 

her beautiful nails even drew 

comments from the nurses at 

Nazareth House, where she 

passed away. 

Because it was lockdown at 

the time, the family was unable 

to hold a funeral, but memorial 

festivities were in the works. 

“We will be having a birthday 

bash in November.” 

“We’ll be having a line dance 

and entertaining afternoon, combined 

with pictures and stories 

and things.” 

“That’s really the send-off mum 

would have wanted.”

Talented golfer with a lot of time on his side

COOPER MOORE isn’t the first 

sportsman to be put off his game 

by the garish neon lights of the 

Las Vegas strip or Fremont St, 

downtown. 

On his first visit he stayed in 

the MGM Grand, where Mike 

Tyson made a relatively meagre 

living in Brad Garrett’s Comedy 

Club. 

He’d bare his soul throughout 

“Undisputed Truth”, a cautionary 

tale for boxing fans as the 

heavyweight champion of the 

world detailed how he squandered 

millions of dollars worth 

of purses. 

A prodigiously talented golfer, 

Moore made his most recent trip 

to Nevada’s desert oasis in 2018, 

and three years on, until recently, 

he has been whiling away his afternoons 

teeing off against painting 

ground sheets suspended in a 

Christchurch garage. 

Fortunately this is not a story 

of unfulfilled potential, of opportunity 

squandered – it’s quite 

the opposite as Moore has been 

walking the fairways of Clearwater 

and Waitikiri since the 

downgrade to alert level 3. 

While global sport’s household 

names have been impacted by 

the Covid-19 pandemic – Tokyo’s 

Olympians had anything but an 

authentic Games experience –

contain the virus. 

Moore, who turned 13 in June, 

still has time on his side though, 

elite golfers, like tennis players, 

tend to start very, very young in 

this day and age. 

After all, he swung his first 

club right-handed as a four-yearold, 

and by the time Moore was 

eight he had made the cut for an 

International Junior Golf Association 

tournament. 

He was 10th on the leaderboard, 

and the Marshland 

School pupil learned his lesson, 

ditto dad. 

“Being in Las Vegas we made it 

a family holiday as well, it wasn’t 

just about golf,” said Jayden 

Moore. 

“We were playing golf and going 

to the strip and seeing what 

was happening there. By the 

time we got to the third round, 

Cooper was pretty tired, the 40 

deg C heat took it out of you.” 

When the Moores returned 

in 2018, they adopted a business 

before pleasure approach for 

the World Stars of Junior Golf 

tournament. 

“We had a detailed plan. We 

stayed 25 minutes from the strip, 

close to the course. After eight 

days of golf, we had the holiday,” 

Jayden Moore said. 

Work before play paid off as 

Cooper, a member at Clearwater, 

Russley and Waitikiri, won the 

boys’ nine-10 years grade at the 

extra hole at Paiute Golf Resort. 

“That was a really good experience 

for us to see where he was 

at. It was also an eye-opener to 

understand what golf was like 

on a world stage,” Jayden Moore 

said.

winter. He was starting to build a 

little bit of a profile for himself,” 

Moore said. 

“It is frustrating for him but 

he’s pretty mature in that sense, 

he understands the reason why.”

11.4 when he won in Las Vegas, 

has had to settle for trimming

club records.

We certainly live in trying times and have as 

a community met many challenges over the 

past two years as we have faced the constant 

onslaught of COVID-19. As we grapple with 

repeated lockdowns, the need for vaccinations 

and the endless changes to our day-to-day 

routines, the one positive constant has been 

our beautiful kura. 

Haeata stands as a bastion of support for 

our ākonga and whānau, with a kaimahi/staff 

committed to making a positive difference for 

us all. Often I am overwhelmed at the level of 

giving that underpins the ethos of this school, 

seen in the dedication of our Hauora team 

who support us in times of need, our kaimahi 

whose default setting is “above and beyond,” 

and our community partners who never say 

no. 

On Saturday, 28 August 2021 a large team 

of kaimahi arrived at kura to prepare and 

distribute Learning Packs for our ākonga. 

They then drove all around the city dropping 

the packs off to whānau who are supporting 

learning at home. It is this cohesive and 

integrated approach to supporting our ākonga 

that sets us apart as a learning institution. 

As we move from Lockdown Level 4 to 

Lockdown Level 3 it is pleasing to see how 

well our ākonga have coped with the new 

requirements while still studying from home. 

A skeleton staff are currently onsite to awhi/ 

support the ākonga of our essential workers 

and hopefully if all goes well they will be joined 

by the rest of the kura next week. 

So, what will our future look like a year from 

now? By working together for and with others, 

we will only be stronger and safer. Thank you 

to everyone who made the sacrifice, locked 

down and stayed home. Together we saved 

lives and ensured the way forward for us all will 

be positive, safe and assured.

On the 14th of August 2021, 

11 secondary schools took to the 

stage to compete for the title of 

Waitaha Secondary School Regional 

Kapa Haka Competitions 2021 first 

place winners. 

Our Haeata Community Campus 

rangatahi showed true collaboration 

by combining forces with Linwood 

College, Christchurch Boys High, 

Christchurch Girls High, St Thomas 

and Cashmere. Their name, 

Kimihia te Matauranga. 

One of the complexities of being 

a combined kura kapa, was the 

inability to practice during school 

time. Every performer gave up 

100’s of hours, over weekends and 

school holidays to deliver a polished, 

skillful performance with their 25 

minutes on stage. This couldn’t have 

happened without the support of 

their incredibly talented tutors and 

kura kaiako who gave up their time 

to tutor and support our rangatahi 

through their journey.

Kōmanawa years eight, nine and ten went on 

a camp at Living Springs in week ten of term 

two. 

Our aim was to develop whakawhanaungatanga 

and have a great time together in the outdoors. 

The good times began with a battle playing 

archery war, we were grouped in teams that 

were named after ngā whetū o Matariki. Kaiako 

and ākonga were up for the battle. Competition 

was fierce. 

We swam daily, played tag, basketball, and 

spotlight at night. Beside the campfire there 

were pakiwaitara/stories shared and delicious 

toasted marshmallows. 

It was a test of courage, resilience and 

endurance in climbing the enormous trees at 

Living Springs. 

Together weaving the 

realisation of potential. 

We embarked on a hikoi into the ngahere/ 

native bush accompanied by a Rongoa 

Kaupare - protection karakia and kōrero 

about our rongoā along the way where 

we tasted kawakawa. The hikoi ended at a 

majestic eight hundred year old Kahikatea. 

As part of the manaakitanga our groups were 

on roster to serve the kai, set the tables, 

clean up after each meal. All groups cared for 

each other and worked together in harmony. 

On the last morning some of us arose at 

five thirty to observe Matariki rising which 

was an enchanting experience as Living 

Springs sits upon Te-Poho-o-Tamatea-The 

Port hills looking towards the entrance of 

Te Whakaraupō-The Lyttleton harbour. The 

camp was an amazing experience for us all.

in terms of where they want to

Cooper was in Canterbury’s 

development programme as

her game locally. 

“He was lucky enough to 

be around her and a lot of 

young guys that are now in 

college in America. He knows 

within himself he’s still got a 

lot of work to do and not many 

people make it,” Jayden Moore

Cooper, who lives a sweetly 

struck nine-iron from Waitikiri, 

has a putting green in the 

backyard and hasn’t replaced 

all divots on the lawn. 

He also plans to make his 

mark one day at the 2032 

Olympics in Brisbane and the 

PGA tour – a division one college 

scholarship in America is 

the pathway to that goal after 

secondary school at St Bede’s. 

Cooper spends 10 hours a 

week practicing and plays 

Saturday and Sunday. 

“I never get bored. There’s 

lots of different opportunities 

and you make lots of good 

friendships,” he said, naturally

as his biggest work on. 

And although golf is a
