Council consults on parking
MICK.JENSEN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
The community is to have its say on
parkingarea in the West Street
railwayreservetothe north of
Havelock Street is beinglined up to
providemore parking in the
Ashburton central business district.
Ashburton District Council has
adopted anew draft parking strategy
and is consulting with the community
on adraft Ashburton town centre
parkingmanagement plan.
If the communityagrees withthe
draft strategyand Ashburton plan,
the proposed new parking areaon
West streetcould provide between
100130more parks.
The councilhas included $1.5
Plan, but the development of the
railwayreserveland between
Havelock Street and the pedestrian
overbridge is subject to approval
from both KiwiRail and NZ
Transport Agency.
The proposed parkingarea will be
laid out in asimilar way to the
existing West Street car park and will
accommodate all day parking.
There may be some changes to the
existing West Street car park time
restrictions to accommodate more
short term parking for town centre
visitors.
The draft parking strategy adopted
by councillors at last week’s council
meeting on Zoom, providesa
framework for managing the future
needs and demandsofdifferent
users.
The previous parking strategy for
the district was last updated in 2011.
Ashburton mayor Neil Brown said
now was achance for the public to
have their say on parking.
Asummary of the parkingstrategy
and draft Ashburtonplan would go
out for consultation and the public
would be asked anumber of
questions.
Handmade facemasks prove popular
DANIEL.TOBIN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
Facemasks have been in high demand
this lockdown keeping Annemarie
Harvey, who makes masks from home,
busy at her sewing machine.
When Alert Level 4hit last month
Annemarie was inundated with orders
for her handmade masks peaking at
around 200300 aday. She now has a
steady flow of orders averaging40per
day.
During lockdown 2020 Annemarie
started making afew masksfor friends
and word soon spread.
‘‘And from there everybody else
wanted masks, so that’s how it
started,’’ she said.
When not in lockdown Annemarie
works parttime at Cafe Time in
Tinwald, during lockdown mask
making takes up most of her time,
marketing and selling online during
the day and hitting the sewing
machine in the evenings.
She has come up against ahitch with
Facebook’s rules regarding facemask
sales.
‘‘Facebook restricts mask
advertising because people overseas
have been buying up facemasks from
shops then putting them on Facebook
at increased prices.
‘‘I have just tried to put them on the
local marketplace, sometimes they let
it go through, sometimes they don’t, it
is just hit and miss which makes it
really hard.’’
Annemarie wants her masks to be
affordable, pricing them at $5 each.
‘‘I’m not going crazy with the
pricing, some people sell masks for
$15$20 each, Iaminanage group
where I’m thinking its better for
people to wear amask because if I
catch covid Icould die, so Imake it
affordable, and you need two, one to
wear one to wash.’’
The most suitable fabric for masks is
100% cotton, sourcing the best cotton
she can get form local shops or online,
she said.
‘‘The better the cotton the better it is
for breathing, Imake them double
layer with alittle pocket so people can
add afilter or just tissue paper if they
wanted that extra layer of protection.’’
Her maskscome in avariety of
patterns and colours, but the most
popularisstill plain black.
Facemasks can be ordered via
‘‘Itwas just becoming to hard
Passion for great outdoors
MICK.JENSEN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
Dean Rattray has missed his beloved
outdoors during lockdownand can’t
wait to get back fishingand hunting.
The Ryal Bush Transport
dispatcher learnt his fishing and
bird hunting skills from his dad and
has passed that knowledgeand
enthusiasm on to his own children.
‘‘There’s no betterfeeling than
being out and activeinthe freshair
and in beautiful scenery.
‘‘I’ve got apassion for the outdoors,
it’s as simple as that.’’
Beingable to put ‘‘tucker on the
table’’ was agood feeling,aswas
gettingyoungpeople awayfrom
watching the television or being on
devices, he said.
The passionfor the outdoors has
led Dean to the decisiontostand for
aspot on the Central South Island
Fish and Game Council.
He wants to do his bit to the protect
resourcesfor future generations,
including his own grandchildren.
There are 10 nominations for eight
positions on the council and the
region extends from the south bank
of the Rakaia River in the north,to
Moeraki in the south.
Deanwas optimistic about being
elected.
Dean Rattray with asalmon hooked
out the Rangitata River.
‘‘I’ve been an honoraryranger with
Fish and Gamefor the last six years
and I’ve been keeping an eye on Lake
Heron. Iunderstandthe issues and
the lay of the land.’’
Fish and Game Councilvoting
opensonSeptember 16 and closes on
October 12. The electionwill be
conductedbypostal and internet
voting.
Dean said the biggest challenge in
protecting the environment was to
get people to put aside their personal
views and to work as one.
‘‘We’vegot to do the right things.
Hunters and fisherman, Fish and
Game and the rural communityall
have to come together because we
know we needtoimprove water
quality and we all want that to
happen.’’
Aseasonal bag limit of two searun
salmon per anglerhad been
introduced this year in this region
and in North Canterbury year to
address the declining salmon
population,Dean said.
‘‘Fortyyears ago the limit was six
and therewas great salmon fishingin
the Ashburton River.’’
He said there was as still ahigh
number of duckstoshoot, but the
rural landscape of the district had
changed in recent years with the
development of dairying.
Lake Heron, Lake Coleridgeand
other high countryspots are
favourites with Deanand his family,
and he tried to get out hunting or
fishing mostweekends.
On October 1the river fishing
season opensand afew weeks later
those lakes will be adrawcard for
keen fishermen.
Positive stories to
replace slogan
There will be no replacement
for the current district slogan
‘Whatever It Takes’ andinstead
positivestorytelling will be used
to market the district.
The old slogan has been
ridiculedbynational news
media in recentmonths and is
seen as outdated and
inappropriate for promoting
Mid Canterbury business and its
people.
Speaking at an Ashburton
District Council zoommeeting,
councillor Rodger Letham said
‘Whatever It Takes’ had no
The problem with slogans
werethatthey tired over time,
he said.
Councillor Leen Braam said
he was in favour in astorytelling
approach andhated the term
‘Ashvegas’ which was still used
in aderogatory way by someto
refer to Ashburton.
He was supported by
councillors Lynette Lovett and
John Falloon.
Mr Falloonsaid aslogan, like
as it was fashionable’’.
Councillor Liz McMillan said
sheliked the idea of the
community coming up with its
own slogan ideas rather than
council deciding.
Mayor Neil Brown said there
wasnothingtostop the
community doingthat.
“Storytellingabout our
people, our businesses,our
activities,and our place in
general also has the ability to
make apositive impact,” he
said.
Fouroptionswere presented
to councillors; engaging a
strategic marketing companyto
developanew slogan, handing
the job over tocouncil staff,
developing aslogan with the
community and dispensing with
aslogan altogether.
The costofusingastrategic
marketing companyis
estimated at up to $150,000 and
there is no budget for it.
Councillor Carolyn Cameron
said she was ‘‘in between
motions’’ and did notwant to
justwalk away fromthe slogan
concept.
‘‘We can’t imposeour own
do need to endeavour to
improve the district’s image,’’
Waste minimisation leader moves on
MICK.JENSEN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
The man who helped take
Ashburton District Council’s
(ADC)rubbish and recycling
servicefrom the dark ages and
into awaste minimisation
leaderhas moved on.
Council solid waste manager
Craig Goodwin has relocated to
the North Island to be closer to
family and leaves behind some
majorimprovements in rubbish
infrastructureand services.
When Mr Goodwin started
with council in 2014 rubbish
was collected in blackbags and
picked up by old green buses.
Resourcerecovery parks in
the district werereferred to as
“dumps’’ and were not as
orderedortidyasthey are now.
Todaystate of the art trucks
pick up rubbish and kerbside
recycling andclever technology
and an efficient wheelie bin
collection systemoperates.
Mr Goodwin said he enjoyed
his time in Ashburton and was
proud of what he and others
had beenable to achieve.
Recyclingvolumehad
increased 30 per centprior to
covid and glass volume by 55
per cent duringhis time.
Separating the previously
combined education and
collection contract had beena
positivemovethat had
improved engagementwith
service providers.
Mr Goodwinsaidhehad gone
through similar waste
minimisation changesineast
Waikato andhadcome to
Ashburton with that experience
behind him.
Long serving councillor and
former mayor Angus McKay
said Mr Goodwin haddone an
excellent job for council.
ADCnow led the way with
waste minimisationand did a
better job of it than most
councils aroundthe country.
“Craig Goodwin suggested
whatcouldbedonewith
rubbish andrecycling and after
counciltickedthings off, Craig
went about ensuring everything
was achieved.’’
Cr McKay said Mr Goodwin
was approachable and had
built up good relationshipswith
stakeholders.
Mr Goodwinalso managed
the Rakaiatoilet project
upgrade. He finishedwith ADC
last week and has taken up a
waste minimisationrole with
Food forest idea grows
Arecent workshop in
Ashburtonhas developed
knowledge andenthusiasm for
the idea of foodforests.
The food forest concept
functions as ahealthy closedloopecosystemand
aims to
maximize the amountoffood
thatcan be grown in an area.
It mimics anatural forest,
withsimilar layers of plants
thatserve different roles in the
ecosystem.
The food forest builds soil
and accumulates nutrients,
selffertilizes,selfmulches,
selfregulates and produces
food.Italso sequesters carbon,
supports pollinators and
protects andenhances
biodiversity.
The food forest workshop
was sponsored and organised
by Lesley Ottey, whoruns Eco
Educate and is contracted by
AshburtonDistrict Council to
deliverthe district’s water and
waste educationcontract.
Mrs Otteysaid 15 people
fromboth town andcountry
had attended the full day
Water and waste educator
Lesley Ottey is keen to see the
food forest concept expand in
Mid Canterbury.
workshop at theRiding for the
Disabled grounds and
feedbackhad beenvery
positive.
Gordyn Hamblyn from the
KaiapoiFood Forest has been
the facilitator andhad spoken
about the concept andhis
involvement.
Kaiapoi was agood example
of people coming together
after the earthquakesand
working on developing a
reservewhere food, vegetables
and medicinal plantscouldbe
grown forthe benefit of the
community, she said.
‘‘Foodforests bring people
together and through that
connectioncomesinspiration
and education, which in turn
bringsresilience.’’
MrsOttey said food forests
could be developed on any
scale and depending on the
space available.
Shewas looking forward to
seeingthem develop across
the district.
To supportthat
development Mrs Ottey has
been able to pass on six apple
trees to Trott’s Garden,which
is eyeing up afuture
community garden. The trees
are from food resiliencegroup
The move to AlertLevel 2
has bought ameasure of
stability to local businesses,
but after weeks of beingin
Level4and 3someare still
on thebrink, business owner
Bob McDonald says.
Mr McDonald, ownerof
Health 2000, thought the
South Island had been
harshly treated withwhat he
calledunnecessarily high
alert levels.
‘‘We haven'thad acase
down here andhave had the
samerestrictions as
Auckland, we should have
gone to Level 3after thefirst
week, andweshould have
beeninLevel 2lastweek.
‘‘It is pretty shitty to be
fair, noone makes money in
Level3it’s just really hard,
we’ve all beentold how bad
it is for the last monthso
people are quite nervous I
think.
‘‘Then thecouncil decide
to shut theroad down, that's
bloodyhandy,’’hesaid.
Mr McDonald feels for his
fellow business owners
particularly the hospitality
industry.
‘‘The hospitality guys are
the onesIamconcernedfor,
they have at least another
twoweeks,even Level 2is
really hard work for them, in
Level 2for us it pretty much
business as usual, there is
still contact tracing, but
people canget around.’’
CanterburyEmployers'
Chamber of Commerce
(CECC) chiefexecutive
Leeann Watson said
lockdownimpacted
businesses in different ways
depending on the sector.
‘‘Manybusinesses can
operate remotely, although
getting teams to operate
remotely has its fair share of
challenges, we’ve doneit
quite alot in the last decade
in Canterbury with the
various criseswehave faced,
so businesses are pretty
good at setting their team up
quickly andbeingagile.
‘‘We have to acknowledge
there are plentyof
businesses that can’twork
from homelike
manufacturing and
hospitality, they are the ones
who are most impacted
during lockdown,’’ Ms
Watson said.
TheCECCrun acovid
hadreceived over 1200calls
this lockdown.
‘‘A lot of calls are around
whatcan we do at Alert
Level 3, who’s an essential
business etc.’’
Ms Watsonsaid itwasn't
necessarily lackof
informationthatprompted
calls from businessowners,
it was more they wantedto
talk to someoneabout their
particularsituation.
‘‘When people go into a
crisis youcan have allthe
informationout there, but
people want to pick up the
phone and speak to a
human.
‘‘Ithink that is avital role
Truck win
An Ashburton man had aFather’s Day to
remember after he scratched his way to a
brand new Ford Ranger on a‘Truckloads of
Ford Rangers’ Instant Kiwi ticket.
The man, who wishestoremain
anonymous, wasenjoying arelaxingSunday
morning complete with abig cooked
breakfast to celebrate Father’s Day when
the family gavehim his present.
“Not only did the kids cook breakfast, but
they gave me apair of newshoes so Iwas
feeling pretty spoilt. That’s when my wife
handed me acard, which had acouple of
Instant Kiwi scratchies tucked inside,” he
said.
“After lots of hugswith the kids, Isat down
to scratchthe tickets. The last ticket I
scratched wasthe Ford Ranger Instant Kiwi
–and when Igot to the very last line that I
noticed Ihad three Ford symbols on one
line.”
It was then thatthe Ashburton dad
realised just howmuchluckierhis Father’s
Day had become.
“I showed the scratchie to my wife right
away and asked her to double check it for me
–Ididn’t want to gettoo far ahead of myself.”
“Shesprung intoaction, openedupthe
Lotto NZ App on her phone and scanned the
ticket –all of asudden ‘MajorPrize Winner’
appeared on the screen. We were in
completedisbelief, so we bundled the kids
into the car and went straighttothe local
Lotto shop,” he said.
With his family waiting outside due to
social distancing rules, the man wentinside
and confirmed he really had won abrand
“Although we didn’t all go into the shop
together,myfamily couldsee me through the
door of the shop. When the Lotto operator
confirmed that my ticket was awinner, we
all started jumping up and down with
excitement–inside and outside the shop. It
was such acoolmoment,” he said.
He spent the rest of theday enjoying time
withhis wife and children, still buzzing on
the excitement of winning an Instant Kiwi
prize.
“I couldn’t believe my luck –Ican still
hardly believe it to be honest. It certainly
was aFather’s Day I’ll never forget!”
Message From ThePrincipal
COVID Impacts
We on the Mainland areall hoping that, as youare
reading this,weare in Covid Level2(which,indeed,
we noware).
TheDelta variantshowedhow quickly it can spread,
as shown by the explosion of cases in Auckland. Our
authorities responded quickly and are determined
to stamp itout. Mybrother lives in Sydney and his
family is well aware ofthe disruption caused bya
Delta outbreak that wasn’t dealt with effectively.
However, all of New Zealand I think acknowledges that further disruptions
duetoCOVID arepossible.
AcknowledgementtoParents
CanIacknowledge the wisdom of our parents when we returned to Level
3, as we had no students attending College. Parents have done agreat
job of making alternativearrangements and, becausethe lockdownwas
laterinthe year than 2020, far fewerofour students are13years old.
PositiveSupportFor StudentAchievement
There have been acouple ofdecisions made that will have apositive
impactonstudent achievement.
The first of these is the one by School Sport NZwho made the call that
all regional and national sports tournaments are cancelled. This was a
decision supportedbythe West Coast-CanterburyPrincipals’Association.
In effect, this means thatwintersports have ceased in mostcodes.
Thesecond of these wasthe decision by NZQA to pushthe NCEAexternal
exams back by twoweeks. This will give our senior students fiveweeks in
Term Four beforethey facethesefinal exams.
Future-2023 and beyond
Looking well into our future, wehave made adecision in regards to the
structureofour Year 9and 10 classes in 2023 andbeyond.
Currently we have offered either the Innovation Model (of subjects
collaborating with each other) or the SingleSubjectModel (the traditional
silo subjectstructure).
However, there is increasing recognition that any future employment will
require creative problem-solvers who can collaborate and communicate
effectively with others. They also need to be resilient and entrepreneurial.
The traditional educational model is very good atimparting knowledge
but, of course, this is becoming less important with information being
available anytime and anywhere. With this change of emphasis in mind
then the Innovation Model isbetter able tooffer development ofthese
desired attributes.
Therewill, ofcourse, still be explicit teaching of subjectcontent, plusan
emphasis on literacyand numeracy.
Our changes mirror changes that all education systems are undertaking
or considering fortheir futures. Therehas beenanincreasing recognition
thatthe requirements forsuccess in the future willbedifferent. Therefore,
the traditional model of schooling based on the acquisition of knowledge
needs to change.
We,ofcourse,havebeenworking anddevelopingthe Innovation Model
for the last four years and weare comfortable that itismore suited to
equippingour graduatesfor adifferentfuture.
Thereare exciting timesahead.
Year 13 StudentVolunteer/Service Projects
As outlined in last week’s newsletter this year, aspart ofthe Year 13
Ako programme, College aimed for every Year 13 student totake part
in avolunteering/serviceproject. Aprojectcould be within or outside
of school.
This week we continue to outline anumber of these projects, where
students give back to the school and/or local community, mainly by
students in 13GBD –Teacher, Clair Bedward’s AkoClass.
Georgia Moke-Harvey–
Choreographed forAshburton College Showquest
Georgia said thatfor her Volunteer Projectshe choreographed forthe
Ashburton College Showquest performance, working alongside the
studentcreativeteam as well as PerformanceCo-ordinatorClaireBubb
and Head of Drama Kylie Backhouse-Smith.
For the preparation of Showquest, students and staff had at-College
practices most lunch times throughout Term One, where Georgia taught
the dancechoreography. Theteamhad also held meetings during the April
school holidays and afterschool.
Georgiasaid it took her approximately four-fiveweeks to choreograph. This
work was solely Georgia’s, without teacher input until they were actually
teaching the dancetothe students. She said her inspiration came from the
film Moulin Rouge, with the music for the dance being what was used in
this musical.
During this experience Georgia took on aleadership role teaching and
organising her peers, which she said wasgood personal development.
The performance was held on Tuesday 18May, in the Christchurch Town
Hall where College competed with different schools from around the
Christchurch region. Georgia said this was agreat experience, as not only
was she given the opportunity tounleash her creativity for dance and
performance and watch itcome alive as agroup dance but, she said, she
also got to help herschool by doingthis forthem and contributing to their
overall performanceand success at Showquest.
(Pictured above): Part of the College performance.
Georgia’s diary of her Volunteer Project showed that, by the start ofMay,
full rehearsals were taking placeonMondays,Wednesdays and Fridays;with
dancers practising on Tuesdays and Thursdays also. Wewouldall agreethat
this is asignificanttime commitment.
By 12 Mayafull costume rehearsal wasscheduledfor Sunday16May,from
2:00pm-6:00pm, and open to family members and teachers to view.
At the performanceinChristchurch, Georgiawas able to help manage props
in addition to doing
make-up and helping
Georgia concluded by saying ‘although we did not take home any prizes,
this was still an amazing opportunity for all students involved to perform
and create something of our ownthatweare proud of’.
She also noted that this experience has definitely inspired her to try
choreographing other dance pieces in the future, acknowledging
(Withdrawal Room Supervisor)
Victoria’s Volunteer Project was helping (invaluable) staff member
Jayne Cornelius in T14, College’s Withdrawal Room. For the duration of
her Volunteer ProjectVictoriawas on-siteatCollege,volunteering alongside
RangaikoreMakutu.
Every Period 4onaWednesday, during Ako time, they helped Jayne with
whatever tasks were needed on the day. Victoria said that volunteering
there helped free-up some time for Jayne to focus on more important
matters, including emails and finding students or teachers.
Victoria outlined some of the tasks they undertook, including: watching the
students while Jayne went to the
Office;emptyingre-cycling; tidying
the room, and the side storage
room; sorting papers and books;
cleaning the chalkboard; helping
prepare for the Junior House
Basketball lunchtime games which
Jayne organises; and delivering
notices tovarious students.
Victoria said they were pleased with
how the room spaces looked after
their tidying efforts.
ZoeKenny–Helping Year 10 Students in their Maths Class
Zoesaid that, at the startofher project, the
class was just beginning anew topic. She
also noted that, as they were learning, it
wasall coming back to her as to howtodo
it so she wasable to help the students who
weren'tquiteunderstanding.
This projecthelpedher to connecttojunior
studentsand trytokeep them on track with
their work,pluskeeping her ownmaths up
and, inaway, testing her memory tosee
how much she remembered from her Year
9and 10 Maths.
Zoe was working in Maths teacher
YinChua’s class and said, while Ms Chua was
helping some students Zoecould help others and, mainly, was helping one
studentwith explanations and examples.Zoe acknowledged it wasagood
feeling being able to help morethan she expectedtobeable to.
As the weeks in class increased, more students asked for help as they got
to know Zoe, and she said it wasgood to be thanked at the end of the class
time. She was pleased tohave been able to help, and enjoys seeing the
same students around school and having them sayhello –and asking if she
is coming in to the next lesson.
By Week 4, she was able to help Yin Chua with marking some work and,
again explaining the activity they were working on as arecap oftheir
first explanation. Afew students who had finished their work asked Zoe
questions about life asaYear 13 student and being asenior student at
College. This provided an opportunitytoexplain her experiences, and give
some adviceonhow importantfocus and education is.
Week 4evolved into Week 5and preparation time foranassessment, which
meant revision assistance, ready for their assessment the following week.
This week Zoe wasn’t needed in class but did pop in at the start towish
themgood luck!
In summary Zoesaid working with this group of Year 10 students wasquite
fun, and it was good getting to know them and talking with them about
subjects available at College.
Towards the end of the ten-week programme there was less to help with
in the Maths class and no Volunteer Projects by Week 9, so Zoe continued
helping out in the College Library, where she had also been doing some
work, saying she washappytobehelping around the College‘in adifferent
way’.

School Cross-Country
Ines started her Volunteer Project byhelping to train two new Year 9
studentlibrarians,during her lunchtime dutyonTuesdays.
On this day, Ines said, asthereweren’t toomanypeople in the line, the bulk
of the time wasspentmanning thedesk and shelving books.
Borough School Cross-Country
On Week 2, as part ofthe College Student Ambassador Committee, Ines
helped with Ashburton Borough School’s Cross-Country. This took place
during her customarylibrarysession so it wastaken as her volunteer activity
forthe week.
She said she wasveryfortunate to be able to help the teachers with setting
up the track and manning acorner, with her role including cheering the
pupils on and directing them to the correctpath. Ines said thereweremany
children running and thatshe felt sorry forthem as she remembered really
disliking Cross-CountryatPrimarySchool!
(Pictured above, left and right): Putting the marker cones out, and
encouraging the pupils as they came through the course.
Ines thought that helping out through the Ambassador Committee would
be very beneficial forher, given herplan to become aprimaryschool teacher.
Backtothe Library
After the Cross-Country, it was
back to the College Library and
helping over arange of activities,
particularly with the new Student
Librarians, again with returns
and more shelving of books in
the upstairs library section, and
showing them where the DVDs
are kept for when teachers need a
film for class. Ines said she could
remember back to starting in the
library asaYear 9student, without
too much training and feeling
‘really shy’.
The Student Librarians/Helpers
have abooklet they can go through but training them is more watching
over them and being available to answer their questions.
Helping with StudentLibrarianBadge
In order togain aStudent Librarian Badge there isatest required to
showcase skills needed. Ines supported the preparation of this, walking
through the knowledge areas of issuing and returning books, renewing,
reserving, shelving and finding certain books and files. The test took most
of the lunchtime, with agood performanceearning abadge at the end of it.
Mahina Edwards–CanterburyHospice
Mahina volunteered at Hospice Mid Canterbury, helping in the office,
printing off extra things, organising and sorting. Mahina said she was able
to work with Belinda (HospiceManager), one of the lovely ladies who works
at the Hospice, and some of the lovely volunteers who volunteer there.
Mahina went on Wednesdays, helping
throughout Ako time and sometimes
through her lunch break.
On Day One Mahina undertook an
induction process which included
visiting the Hospice Community House,
watching aPowerPoint, doingpaperwork,
discussing the tasks she would be doing
and legal aspects.
Mahina was told about the activities and
services they offer (pictured above, right),
to not only those affected bytheir lifelimiting
disease, but their families and caregivers. Mahinasaid she wasvery
excited to be helping out with averygood cause.
Through her time at Hospice,
Mahina helped organise paperwork
and forms, photocopied, stapled
items and hung up posters.
She also met a couple of other
volunteers and bought amask to
help one of the volunteer causes.
Another week she prepared some
information packets to send out to
the clients who didn’t have email,
finding the perfect way tofold the
flierssothey fitted in the envelopes,
and even had fun cutting out some of
the contact info for the caregivers to
contactthe Hospice, as well as stamping
the back of the envelopes.
(Pictured right): Mahina with, as she
described it,her ‘cutenew mask’.
Mid-June, Mahina couldn’t get
to Community House because of
unfortunate weather, but instead she
did help the PIEs (Pride, Individuality,
Equality) Club with the bake sale they
held at College, baking and decorating
afew of the goods, and helping at the
start of lunch to serve the different
baked goods.
Students Assist at Kai forKids:
College ‘Students of the Month’ Award
Recently, four senior students from Ashburton College committed to
regular volunteering with Kai for Kids, the Charitable Trust initiated
and spearheaded by Jo Taylor.
The concept was based on Ministry ofHealth and Child Poverty Action
Group research showing that food for children at schools is one of the
greatest investments that acommunity can make, tosupport the effective
learning of children. Statistics showthatone in fivechildren in New Zealand
arefood insecure.
Kaifor Kids is the nowwell-known MidCanterburycommunityorganisation
that makes free, nutritious school lunches for over six hundred students at
three local primaryschools.
Helping with this remarkable output involves ateam ofvolunteers and a
roster of parents to serve the meal.
College students Yash Patel, John Magyaya, RJ Pasion and John Radan
electedtovolunteer at this organisation, going to the AshburtonRacecourse
kitchen, either beforeorafter school, to help preparefood forthe lunches.
Schools’Triple SShooting Championships
Ashburton College teams are well-placed at the time of the third
and penultimate round of the National Triple S Target Shooting
competition, with this event held onSunday 15August, just prior to
Level4Lockdown.
Ashburton College has three teams (teams offour-five members) entered
in the competition, which shows the on-going depth of capability within
this sport.
This competition is shot over four months, with teams posting ascore
each month. Three rounds are completed (3x single card rounds) with the
final round, adouble card round, having been scheduled for the middle of
September.
This double cardround is the decider as to whowill becrowned Team and
Individual Champions.
Untouched Record to Date
Ashburton College are current champions, and record holders. Not only
that, they have wonthe titlefor theprevious sixconsecutiveyears, arecord
thatisuntouched by anyother school.
Leading into the third round, the AshColl 1team ofCharlotteMcKenzie,
were sitting in third position, chasing Palmerston North Girls’ High and
Whanganui High Schools.
Manager Nina McKenzie said that after their first tworounds the team was
alittle under what they would have liked but, asavery young team, their
progress forwardbodes incredibly well.
Palmerston North Girls’ High School, who were silver medallists last year,
is the team to beat, albeit they boast two Year 13 Master Grade shooters
spearheading their campaign.
After animproved score of 384.10, up five points on the previous round,
Ashburton College 1isnow sitting in silver position, having passed
Whanganui High School, and now chasing the very strong Palmerston
North Girls’High team.
Further to this, both Charlotte McKenzie (A Grade) and Madi Tourle
(C Grade) are sitting in Bronze Medal position for their respective
grades currently; while Jack Jones,Claudia Cudmoreand Phoebe McKenzie
(pictured below) all sit within striking distance ofamedal finish, requiring a
strong double cardtotal to finish in Round 4.
The Ashburton College 2 team of Tāne Moore, Jack McIntosh,
Bree Greer,SamaSooialo and CarlyVan Wyk) also movedaplace up,from
12thplacedafter Round 2, to 11thafter Round 3, puttinginateam scoreof
371.06.
It is worth noting that they are the highest ranked additional team
from anyschool, currently sittinginfront of manyschools’firstteams.
Tāne has been going particularlywell, and lies right nearthe topofhis
grade (D Grade)and within reach of the final medal positions.
The Ashburton College 3 team of Imogene Felton, Maddie Page,
Sophia Clifford and Taylor Doyle who are all first year shooters, have
shown enormous improvement over the three rounds, and should be very
proudofthemselves.
Unfortunately, due to illness, they have been unable to post afull team score
for this round but their individual scores continue to show great promise,
and theycurrently sitin23rdposition.
Ashburton College, together with Waitaki Boys’High School, are the only
schools who have enteredthree teamsinthe competition, further showing
College’s depthinthis sport.
Looking at Competition Conclusion
With the testing double card round to conclude the match, the College
team’s position is looking promising, with them only needing tocompete
as theyare capable of doing. It is certainly set to be an exciting finish, and
the young people involved should bevery proud of their effort thus far,
especially giventheirage andexperience.
Actors, crew hope to stage Disney show
Mid Canterbury Children’s Theatre is
The cast and crew behind Disney’s
The Little Mermaid Jnr productioncan
now resume rehearsals under Level 2.
“We can resume facetoface
rehearsals, but by October 8wehopeto
be safely down to Level 1inorder to be
abletoperform the show.
“All the childrenhavebeenpractising
hard at home, so it will justbeamatter
of pulling it all together once we get
back. This may take afew extra
rehearsals, but we are up for the
challenge,’’ productiondirector
Cherie Livingstone said.
‘‘We would much ratherworkto
get the showuptoperformance level
now so that we can quickly take
advantage of alert level drops. It’s
much easiertomovedates forthe
show than it is to have abig break
and pick it back up again later on,
so we aregoing to continue with
themomentum we alreadyhave.’’
Covid cancelled last year and
performers arevery keen to get
More of the same?
Lecturing and demonstrating postgraduate clinical
and functional anatomy for the Department of
Anatomyatthe UniversityofOtago to asmall group
of postgraduate physiotherapy students has been a
prolonged 15 year opportunity delving deeply into
musculoskeletal pathology and pain.
Researching joints of the hip, shoulder or knee,
complex joints of the wrist, hand, ankle and foot,
axial structures of the neck, back, and the pelvis
broughtvaluable additional scientific knowledge to
my clinical understanding and patientcare.
Today a far greater understanding exists of the
anatomical and functional uniqueness of individual
patients and the bearing these may have ontheir
pain. Careful anatomical study in the dissecting
room and laboratory, accompanied by the advances
seen in sophisticated imaging like MRI or in the
development and ready access to ultra-sound
imaging have led to significant increases in the
understanding of musculoskeletal pathology and
pain.
Since my years on the Expert ACC panel that
formulated the NZ Guidelines for the Management
of Acute Low Back Pain, it was self-evident a
diagnosis of ‘non-specific backpain’(implyingabout
70% of the US back pain population) encompassed
wide anatomical and pathological variation and
many different pain generating structures, each
possessing particular pain characteristics.
No person, anatomy, pathology or pain is or can be
the same, not by acountrymile!Onthe other hand,
it appears that many inhealthcare assume patient
and pain sameness in their advocacy ofageneric,
one size fits all, pill for all ill approach, whether to
medication, to manual therapy and manipulation,
to exercise, torehabilitation or to treat aunique
individual’s paradoxically generalised “back pain.”
Howmanypatients would accept ageneric diagnosis
of ‘headache’, ‘chest pain’or‘abdominal pain’asthe
basis of carewithout amoreexplicit diagnosis?
So,why accept it forback pain then?
Stay alert at Level 2
Iwant to thankeveryonehere
in Mid Canterburyfor all the
hard work over the past few
weeks as together, we’ve
stayedhome to keep covidat
bay. It’s been greattosee so
many people following the
Alert Level3and 4rulesand to
see some of the creative ways
you havebrightened up life in
your bubbles.
As we make the move down to
Alert Level2,it’s important we
all continue to play our partto
stamp out covid.Deltaismore
infectious than the original
virus, and it can move faster, so
while we are no longeratthe
higheralert level, thatdoesn’t
mean we can takeour eyes off
the ball. We all needtostay
alert and keep up those key
healthbehaviours that have
helpedusbeat covid in the
past.
We know that the Delta
variant of Covid19 has changed
the game,soinorder to beat it,
we’ve had to adapt our game
plan too.Level 2isdifferent to
how it’sbeen before. Here are
some of the golden rules:
Face coverings are now
mandatory at Alert Level 2
whenever you are inside most
publicvenues, such as shopping
centres, libraries or retail
shops.However, you can take
your mask off in hospitality
venues so thatyou can eat and
drink. Staff at these venues, and
at any publicfacingbusinesses
open at Level2,must wear face
coverings.
Peopleshouldbescanning
everywhere theygo. However,
recordkeeping is also
mandatoryunder Level 2for
some venues,including bars,
restaurants, cinemas, concerts,
churches,and closecontact
businesses like hairdressers.
Because Delta is more
transmissible, we’re much more
worried aboutbig groupsof
people. It’s now no longer
whetheryou have enough space
between you and others; but
ratherifyou have too many
peopleinashared space with
poor ventilation,that ups the
risk.
For indoor venues, thereisa
limit of 50 peoplefor indoor
gatherings, hospitality settings
and event venues. This,coupled
with the rules around customers
being seatedand tables being
separated, reducesdown the
risk of superspreader events.
For outdoor venues, you can
have up to 100 peopleinthat
space,alongside the rules of
being seatedand separated.
The second change relatesto
indoorpublicfacilities like
gyms, museums and libraries.
Previouslythese venues have
had no hardlimit on how many
peopleare allowed to be in a
space,but aone metre
distancing ruleasaproxy for
how many people could be
inside. We’re now bringing this
into alignmentwith the rules for
retailand supermarkets, which
is 2metres.
The best way to protect
yourself and your loved ones is
to get vaccinated, and our
vaccinationrolloutis
continuing safely at Level 2.
Everyone aged 12 and over is
now abletobook their vaccine,
so if you haven’talready done
so, I’d really encourage you to
head to bookmyvaccine.nz or
call 0800 28 29 26 to make your
appointment.
Stone wetas are found in the high country, living under and
among rocks.
Wetas are special
BY MARY RALSTON
After dealing with both winter
andlockdown we shouldbe
able to empathise with stone
weta.
Weta are special New
Zealandinsects. There are
about 70speciesthatlive in a
wide range of habitats, from
alpine rocks to caves, the
coast andoffshoreislands.
Theylook abit like crickets or
grasshopppers but are
flightless and are some of the
heaviest insects in the world.
Stone weta are onespecies
of weta found in this district.
These amazing insects canbe
inactive for up to 5months of
theyear andsurvive
temperatures down to minus
10 degrees for over two weeks.
Usually theyliveinthe alpine
zone above 1000 mbut they
arealsofoundlower than
that, living under rocksalong
theedges of small high
country rivers, such as the
Stour. These weta may not
have fared well in the big
floods afew monthsago when
river levels were at record
highs androcks tumbled over.
Stone weta are actuallya
type of tree weta, but have
adapted to living under rocks
andinrock cavities.This
helps to make themless
accessibletopredators.
Nocturnal habits mayhelp
them avoid native predators
such asfalcons and lizards,
butisnodefence against cats,
stoats, ratsand mice.These
introduced mammals have
taken atoll of wetas, along
with other native insects and
birds.
On the coldest days of
winter when temperatures
are wellbelow freezing, the
stone weta seem to befrozen
solid. Butonawarm winter
day, theythawout and are
activeundertheir rocky
homes.
It seemsthattheymake a
type of antifreeze during
autumnwhich protects them.
This circulates in their blood
duringwinter andthen
decreasesinspringand
summer.
Plantsand small
invertebrates make up the
diet of the stone weta.They
are quite longlived for
insects–up to eight years.
They maybefour before
reaching maturity.
