Invitation to view hall work<br />
The Mt Somers Reserve Board is<br />
inviting the communitytoan<br />
afternoon tea this Sundayto<br />
showcase upgrades at the Mt Somers<br />
Hall. The event will be held under<br />
new Alert Level 2guidelines.<br />
Earthquake strengthening and<br />
refurbishment workstarted in<br />
February and was completed in<br />
April.<br />
Agrant fromthe Government’s<br />
Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) of<br />
$89,353.13 supported the costs of the<br />
project which included the<br />
strengthening of the building facade,<br />
the freshening up of the supper<br />
room, demolition of achimney and<br />
painting work.Improvements have<br />
also beenmadetothe lighting and<br />
kitchenarea.<br />
TheMtSomers Hallis100 years<br />
old next year.<br />
Light refreshments will be<br />
provided at the community afternoon<br />
tea which runs between 2pm and<br />
4pm.<br />

RWNZ.<br />
Office bearers were returned<br />
withoutchange;Marg as president,<br />
Sandraassecretary andTrish as<br />
treasurer.<br />
It wasapleasure to read a<br />
citation, covering averybusy 15<br />
years of RW involvement, before<br />
Marion Dent was presented with<br />
LifeMembershipofMid Canterbury<br />
ProvincialRWNZ, by South Island<br />
Board Member, Sharon Davie<br />
Martin.<br />
Flood fund shared in community<br />
Thirty six families and organisations<br />
receivedashare of the$86,000<br />
distributedthroughthe Mayoral<br />
ReliefEmergency fund following the<br />
Mayflooding in the district.<br />
The fundhas officially closedbut<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> District mayor Neil<br />
Brownsaidthe relief fundingwas to<br />
help people affected as they dealt<br />
with theaftermathand cleanup<br />
from the devastating floods.<br />
“Being able to supportour most<br />
affectedresidents with asmall<br />
financialcontribution is great. While<br />
we never had the fundingtobeable<br />
to fix all the problems our most<br />
affectedresidents faced,this funding<br />
enabled recipientstopay bills, get<br />
off the farmfor afew nights, or bring<br />
in specialised help to deal with some<br />
immediateissues, like damaged<br />
driveways.<br />
“Wewerealso pleased to be able to<br />
support the local Rural Women who<br />
have beendoing an excellentjob of<br />
ensuring our affected residents were<br />
cared for throughregularmeal<br />
deliveries.<br />
“Wealso acknowledgedthe impact<br />
the flood had on local community<br />
infrastructure like walking and<br />
cyclingtrails, so provided someseed<br />
fundingfor flood recovery to the<br />
Mountain Biking <strong>Ashburton</strong>club,<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> Motorcycle Club, and the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> Lions Club so they canget<br />
on andrepair whatare valuable<br />
communityrecreation spaces.”<br />

presented. Competition judgesfrom<br />
WI were thanked.<br />
Guest speaker, Kate Acland was<br />
introduced. Kate is awomen with<br />
many talents. She leftusimpressed<br />
withher commitment to many<br />

“We live in agreat community that<br />
rallies around those in need at times<br />
of crisis,” he said.<br />
The distributed funding came from<br />
the Mayoral Relief Fund from NEMA<br />
($58,000), ADCGivealittlepage<br />
$8000, anddonated funds of $20,000.<br />

released it’s midterm results of the<br />
leadership, advocacyand regional<br />
coordination shown for its<br />
Canterbury communities.<br />
The mayoral forum includesMid<br />
Canterbury represented by<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>District mayor Neil<br />
Brown.<br />

threechildren farm Mt Somers<br />
Stationwitha100 year visionfor the<br />
farming family,encompassingmuch<br />
diversification. Offfarm,Kate also<br />
holds directorshiponthree boards.<br />
Her closing remark “every<br />
problem has asolution”, epitomises<br />
