Salah scores 100th

goal in Liverpool win

Liverpool kept pace with

the Premier League’s

leading pack as Mohamed

Salah’s 100th

English top-flight goal

helped them to victory at Leeds.

The game was somewhat

marred, though, by a dislocated

ankle to teenage midfielder

Harvey Elliott, who was stretchered

off following an initially

innocuous-looking sliding challenge

from Pascal Struijk that

ultimately saw the Leeds player

sent off.

Liverpool were already firmly

in control of the game by then,

though.

Egyptian forward Salah was

perfectly placed to tap in Trent

Alexander-Arnold’s low cross

and give the Reds a 20th-minute

advantage, with Fabinho bundling

home the second following

a corner five minutes after the

Hearts of Oak on

Sunday afternoon

suffered a 3-2 defeat

to Accra Lions FC in

a friendly match as

the side continued preparations

for their campaign in the CAF

Champions League.

After emerging as Champions

of the 2020/2021 Ghana

Premier League season, the team

nicknamed the Phobians are set

to compete with other champions

in the continental inter-club

competition.

As part of preparations for

the first game of the competition,

Hearts of Oak have in the

break.

Sadio Mane had missed a

number of chances in the game,

but made absolutely certain of

the points with a low finish into

the far bottom corner in injury

time.

Leeds had their chances too,

with Rodrigo firing the best of

them straight at Alisson with

the game still goalless.

But with a man fewer, Leeds

could not muster the challenge

required and have now failed to

win any of their first four topflight

matches in a season for

the first time since 1958-59.

They will also now have to

deal with a shortage of numbers

in central defence, with Struijk

banned and Diego Llorente limping

off in the first half to join

Robin Koch on the treatment

table.—BBC

Hearts of Oak lose

3-2 to Accra Lions

past weeks been training and

playing friendly matches.

In another friendly match

played at the Accra Sports Stadium

today, the Ghanaian champions

hosted top-flight league

newcomers Accra Lions FC.

At the end of a very tough

contest, Hearts of Oak has been

defeated 3-2 to Accra Lions at the

end of the 90 minutes.

The team will have a rest

on Monday but will return to

training on Tuesday to continue

preparations for the CAF Champions

League encounter against

CI Kamsar next weekend.

Ferguson helped

bring Ronaldo

back to Man U

Sir Alex Ferguson has

revealed his role in

ensuring Cristiano

Ronaldo returned to

Manchester United

rather than joining rivals Manchester

City.

Ronaldo made his second

debut for United on Saturday

and scored twice against Newcastle

United in a 4-1 win.

Speaking to Viaplay ahead

of the game, Ferguson said he

contributed as he didn't want

Ronaldo playing for City.

"I'm excited like everyone

else, there was anticipation all

day yesterday and waking up

in the morning. I speak for all

supporters -- it's a great day for

Manchester United," Ferguson

said.

"A lot of people played their

part [in bringing Ronaldo back]

and I contributed knowing

that really Cristiano wanted

to come here and that was important.

It worked very well.

"I wouldn't say it's emotional

but it's exciting for me

and a relief because I couldn't

imagine him playing for Man

Romelu Lukaku

scored his first ever

goals at Stamford

Bridge as Chelsea

beat Aston Villa to

maintain their unbeaten start.

Lukaku kissed the club

badge as he celebrated his

opener in front of Blues fans

after beating Villa goalkeeper

Jed Steer on his 15th appearance

at the stadium overall.

The Belgian’s clinical finish

through Steer’s legs came from

City, I don't think anyone could.

"That's why we took steps to

make sure he came here and the

club then followed in very well

and I spoke to the Glazers and it

a precise pass from Mateo Kovacic

inside his own half.

Dean Smith’s side created

plenty of chances after conceding

and managed four shots on

target, but could not find a way

past Blues goalkeeper Edouard

Mendy.

Villa were punished for their

wasted chances when Kovacic

doubled Chelsea’s lead early in

the second half with a first-time

finish into the bottom corner

from Tyrone Mings’ weak back

an impact on the young players

in particular, he's got the experience

to handle the occasion."

Ronaldo spent six seasons at

Old Trafford between 2003 and

2009. While with the club he

won eight major trophies and

scored 118 goals.

Lukaku sealed the win for

Chelsea in injury time with a

powerful finish down from the

edge of the box.

The victory takes Thomas

Tuchel’s side up to second, and

sees the club reach a significant

milestone as they become only

the second team in Premier

League history to reach 600

wins in the competition (Manchester

United have 689).—
