There are stories of many farmers whofollowed the then limping hare, often leadingto a cottage. The trail of blood drops lead himinto the cottage where more often than not anold woman was sitting by the fire nursing aninjured leg. (5)This is the end of our short journey with afew tales of the Cailleach. Normally I engagewith the stories with art and ritual, all sharedwithin community so we can share ourinsights and ideas. We need stories to live byand while our current age swamps us withinformation, it is short on wisdom; we need allthe stories we can gather.One of the Cailleach’s winter roles is instriking life down, sending it back to its roots- for if there is no death in winter then therecan’t be any spring rebirth.We too need to return to our roots. I’mheartened to see a huge surge of interest in theCailleach within the last few years. Hopefully,we can view her as a midwife, assisting in amuch-needed rebirth as we send our rootsdown to be fed by rich spiritual bedrock.
