Water reform
Ratepayers are paying $130,000
membership fee to Local
Government New Zealand.
Membership is meant to
bring greater bargaining
power in talks with Wellington.
LGNZ has already stated that
it will not fight Wellington on
the three waters proposal if it’s
made compulsory, and without
first checking with those they
are meant to represent, have
already entered into a heads of
agreement with the Government
over the proposal.
Crs Sam MacDonald and Jake
McLellan have made a motion
to cancel our membership with
LGNZ as it no longer truly
represents the city council and
its ratepayers.
I support both councillors in
this motion. Why pay fees to
a body that’s not on your side?
Councils up and down the
country are not happy with
three waters as well as the way it
is being rushed through.
Smaller councils need bigger
cities like Christchurch to stand
with them the way LGNZ is
meant to.
There are many options
to achieve the goals of three
waters, which we all agree on,
but Wellington hasn’t been
interested in others’ ideas,
insisting their way is the only
way to achieve these goals.

North Beach Zoo
I remember the zoo fondly
back in the 70s. My boss at the
time was a good friend of Bill’s,
so we used to do a lot of maintenance
and building of enclosures
for the animals.
Working on Charlie the
crocodile’s pen was interesting
but quite harrowing. He used to
rear up when we were working
on the top of his pen, teeth flying
everywhere.
Bill also had a galah (pink
cockatoo), which used to spend
the whole day emptying the nails
from a nail box one by one, then
never putting them back!
There were a few otters as well.
We had to work in pairs, keeping
an eye on each other in case the
otters sneaked up on us. They
did have rather sharp teeth.
That’s just a few memories of
my building days at Bill’s zoo.
I hope some other stories come
forth as well.

I remember my husband and I
taking our three young children
to North Beach Zoo.
We didn’t have a nice experience.
The zoo stank and we remember
seeing a monkey covered in
sores biting itself.
This upset our children so
when we heard the zoo had
closed we weren’t surprised.
I haven’t heard many positive
things, but it was interesting
reading the story in The Star.

largess. Stir in sheets of
hypocrisy. Cover with waffle, hot
air and carbon credits.
Best served with bowls of
ridicule and large slices of
cynicism.

David Havili
Great insight in article on
Crusaders and All Black player
David Havili (September 23).
His battles with health and
getting back in the All Blacks
has been inspirational. His move
from fullback to midfield (even
though he had played there
before) has been so successful.
Initially for the Crusaders and
now the All Blacks. Good on
him.
