Rugby League
Meanwhile, the Canterbury
Bulls debut in rugby league’s
revamped National Competition
at Nga Puna Wai on Sunday,
where they host the West Coast
Chargers.
Covid-19 restrictions following
the Delta variant outbreak forced
the New Zealand Rugby League
to rejig the format into three
regional pools.
Last year the top-tier
competition only comprised
four teams, the Bulls, Akarana
Falcons, Counties Manukau
Stingrays and Waikato Mana.
The Chargers beat the
Southland Rams 30-20 in
Greymouth last weekend to
open a four-team southern pool
that also features the Otago
Whalers.
Waikato Mana, Mid Central
Vipers, Upper Central Stallions
and the Wellington Orcas make
up the central pool while the
Falcons, Stingrays and Auckland
Vulcans are the northern pool.
Should the current alert level
3 in Auckland be extended on
Monday then the northern
pool will not compete in the
Players ready for
tournament challenge
Southern Zone Rugby League is proud
and excited to bring national exposure
for our players in these uncertain times
through the help of NZRL, sponsors and
committed family and friends.
Our young men from the South Island
Scorpions 16’s will embark on an
interprovincial campaign consisting of four
matches involving Wellington, Northland,
Mid Central and Upper Central Zones with
the possibility of the winners taking on
an Auckland side later in the year, COVID
restrictions permitting.
Through our annual Southern Zone Rugby
League tournament held in Invercargill
this year, talent from Canterbury, the West
Coast, Southland and Otago assembled
to represent their regions and stake a
claim for higher honours and to play for
the South Island Scorpions at the National
Youth Tournament.
With the abandonment of the tournament
format because of COVID restrictions,
it has been a wonderful effort from
administrators and generous sponsors
to resurrect the representative season to
now be played over 3 weeks, enabling our
young players to showcase their skills and
reap the rewards of the hard work put in
by all involved.
