Without Jeremy, it wouldn’t be Clarke.
Showroom Manager Jeremy
McCulla joined Clarke in 2014
to open their award-winning
Boston showroom. He has
been recognized by the design
industry as Boston’s top customer
service professional. Jeremy’s
product knowledge and ability
to understand the goals of
discerning homeowners and
designers makes your kitchen
design journey a pleasure.
Spend an hour at a Clarke Showroom and one thing is clear: your
time with a Clarke Consultant is the most valuable part of your
kitchen journey. While they’re not designers, these are the people
designers call on when it comes to appliance recommendations. You
won’t buy anything at Clarke, so there’s simply no pressure. What
you can do is compare more Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove models than
anywhere in New England. And explore a living portfolio of kitchens
created by the region’s top designers. You’ll leave inspired with new
knowledge to make your appliance selections with confidence.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
As I sit and write this letter, the news
reports that this September 11th will mark
the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. I remember
that day so well. I had just published my
fifth annual edition and I thought it was
my last. During the next several months,
I found myself wondering: Is this world
coming to an end? Is anyone going to care
about fixing up their homes? What is to
become of the life we once knew?
Well, fast forward to now, COVID-19.
Those same questions hit me as I grappled
with news of this deadly virus. The
common denominator here is that people
were told to stay in their homes. We had
high alerts of terrorist attacks back then
and high alerts of Covid being spread
now. Once again, our homes became our
safe havens and evolved quickly into our
offices, classrooms, and gyms.
Celebrating 25 Years!
All of the businesses featured in these
pages are busy and for good reason. They
are great at what they do and people
are investing in their homes to make
them comfortable, functional, and safe at
record levels. If you want a project done
in your home in the upcoming years, go
through this book and start planning your
project now: due to the lack of materials
and qualified labor force, you need to plan
ahead.
Boston Design Guide Staff: (Back L to R) Julie Kelly, Ian Kaplan, Melanie Perillo, Rob Silsby,
(Front L to R) Lisa Almquist, Jaci Conry, Maureen Lampert, and Colleen Keelan.
This 25th Anniversary issue is no different than the other milestones we have celebrated. I am grateful to the professionals
featured here who have relationships with homeowners who have graciously allowed us to feature their private spaces,
especially after the last 18 months we’ve endured as a nation.
When I brought BDG to Boston in 1997 it was the first regional home publication in New England. That’s hard to believe
now. I feel so blessed that I started out of the gate with the top home professionals 25 years ago and 50 of them are still
with me. They took a chance on a new concept: a home resource guide serving New England and I am forever grateful.
(pages 21-23)
As you can see from this gorgeous issue, print is not dead! We at BDG have mastered the blending of print and digital
to provide you all the information you need when making design and construction decisions on your home. Within these
pages you have the best of the best in home furnishings, products, and services at your fingertips.
Thank you to all my loyal clients for letting BDG showcase your business and thank you homeowners for supporting them.
Happy 25th!
FROM THE EDITOR
BOSTON DESIGN GUIDE
The future is looking bright
Wow, what a year for me to join the BDG team! Since I started working with Melanie
in the fall of 2020, it’s been a whirlwind propelled by positive energy, collaboration,
and hard work.
While we juggle quite a bit here with a small staff, BDG’s commitment to producing
great content, showcasing the region’s best in residential design, and above all,
supporting our clients is unrivaled in the industry.
It’s our desire to spotlight our partners—the folks who are responsible for all facets
of home and landscape design, construction, and installation—in as many ways as
possible. This print issue is just part of what we do. Other aspects include our robust
website (bostondesignguide.com) which features fresh daily content and the largest
home resources directory in New England and our instagram (@bostondesignguide)
where you’ll find a steady stream of inspirational design photos. PRELUDE, a smaller
companion print publication of BDG, is published three times a year and direct
mailed to high end households.
To commemorate BDG’s 25th Anniversary, we wanted to create our most beautiful
issue yet—and while I might be biased, considering this is the first annual resource
guide I’ve been on board for, I have to say it’s simply stunning: a stand-out magazine
that you’ll want to hang on to for a long time.
Happy reading; I’d love to hear from you!
Elms
creates a
striking
home with
an exquisite
mix classic
of design
elements and
details.
Photography by Michael J. Lee
A rectangular sized table felt too big for the dining area, which
is directly off the elevator entry into the home, so Elms found a
three-side boomerang shaped table that fit just right.
Dee Elms knew at once that this home should have “a very
Parisian vibe.” Located in a late 19th century building that
had recently been converted into multiple residences, “the
home already had a lot of lovely finishes in place,” she
recalls, noting the oak herringbone floors, wall paneling,
thick moldings, and artistic steel and glass staircase.
“With all of that, the design could have veered toward
traditional.”
Instead, Elms, who heads her own Boston interior design
firm, went for an aesthetic that layers the classic with
contemporary elements.
The work of French artisans can be found throughout the
home, including the singular Pouenat pendant comprised
of dark antique brass with tinted blown glass balls that
hangs above one end of the living room sectional. “I love
the jewelry it adds to the space,” says Elms, who opted for
pale grey paint on the walls throughout and kept infusions
of color minimal.
Affixed from the ceiling above the stairway is another
dramatic French fixture, this one a vintage light made
of glass spears. “I love lights for the way they can really
transform a room,” says Elms. To create more of an impact
in the compact area, decorative painter Patina Designs
added gold detailing to the adjacent narrow strip of wall.
Since the ceilings are quite high, Elms was able to have
three large Lindsey Adelman bubble pendants above the
kitchen island. The gray glass fixtures punctuate the allwhite
room, where light and views of the Charles River are
reflected in the lacquered finish of the cabinets.
The lofty ceilings also accommodate the master bedroom’s
long, lush ocean blue wool and cashmere drapes. Brass
“It’s important
to me that our
clients see
the value of
the special,
handmade
pieces we put
into a home,
they really
create a
different
kind of
feeling.”
immed globe lights dangle from the ceiling beside the bed,
which was custom designed by Elms. “We customize most
beds because there is such a variation in room sizes, each one
has a different scale—when we design the beds, we know they
will fit exactly right,” she says.
The master’s white and brass vanity was another custom fit.
The mirror is flanked with handmade patinaed brass and
white frosted glass sconces by Jonathan Browning that pair
French Beaux Arts style and 20th Century industrial design.
Elms appreciated the way the knobs on the lights echoed the
motif of the Phillip Jeffries wallcovering, which is festooned
with tiny brass studs in stripe formation. A close look reveals
that the mirror, too, has small brass rivets inset on the corners.
Says Elms, “You want elements to connect, but for it to seem
effortless and almost unnoticeable.”
New England is known the world over for its
A MOMENT WITH
ADOLFO PEREZ
This Weston renovation was Adolfo
Perez’s first “intergenerational
project,” says the Newton-based
architect. “I designed a home for the
homeowner’s parents years ago.” The
homeowners, a young couple just
starting their family—it was the wife
whose parents Perez had previously
worked with—loved the location of the
house—but the original 1960s structure
was dark and dated, “a warren of little
rooms,” says Perez.
Giving the house a more modern,
open flow and introducing a lot more
natural light were among the key
objectives for the renovation, along
with adding about 1,000 more square
feet of living space.
Originally a one-and-a-half story structure,
Perez replaced the one-half upper
level with a full one spanning the width
of the first floor. Upstairs now includes
three bedroom suites, while the first
floor was reconfigured. The disconnected
rooms were replaced with living
spaces that are open to one another.
“The intent was to make the home as
open as possible,” says Perez. “One of
the benefits of an open plan is that you
get light from all sides of the house. This way, the kitchen
can borrow light from the living room if that side of the
house is darker at some point and so forth.”
The old, small windows were replaced with much larger expanses
of glass. “No opening from the original house was
kept: since all the room layouts changed new locations for
windows was dictated,” says Perez, who designed multiple
bands of windows on both the first and second floors.
Made of walnut and glass, the home’s stairway appears
as if it was carved out of a massive block of wood. “We
wanted to take advantage of the double height front foyer,
so we came up with this idea of making the stairs a grand
gesture,” says Perez. Grand indeed: built tightly along
the floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the house,
the stunning stairwell is the first thing one notices on the
approach to the house.
FREE RANGETHE DESIGN CAPABILITIES ARE
LIMITLESS FOR THE TEAM AT SV DESIGN.
With offices on the North Shore and Cape Cod, SV Design—
formerly referred to as Siemasko + Verbridge—has a stellar
reputation amassed over three decades of experience as
one of the region’s top architecture and interior design firms.
Throughout the course of SV Design’s tenure, says principal
Tobin Shulman, “we’ve become contextualists. Our design
ability, our sense of proportion and flow, transcends any
particular style.”
The firm designs new construction residences from the
ground up and renovates existing properties. From a 19 th -
century Boston townhouse to a 1980s deck house to a
new North Shore residence comprised of traditional New
England forms, “All of our projects are very different from
one another,” says Shulman.
When the firm’s integrated suite of design services works
together, SV Design is able to accomplish major changes
in existing homes and develop distinct and cohesive new
houses, says Leslie Schneeberger, an associate principal with
the firm. “We’re able to create a wide variety of styles quite
well. We take our clients tastes and transform them into
something amazing.”
Marcus
Gleysteen designs a
Maine residence that’s fine-tuned
for its empty-nester inhabitants.
54
bostondesignguide.com

Architect Marcus Gleysteen is most
interested in designing floorplans based
on the real needs of the people who will
live in the home.
For a couple in their 50s with grown children,
he recently implemented a prototype concept
he devised in which all the primary living
spaces are on one level. “It’s a very efficient
plan with a great room on one side and
the master suite is on the other side of the
home, while the kitchen is in between,” says
Gleysteen of the coastal Maine retreat. There
are two bedroom suites on the second floor.
Photos by Trent Bell and Marcus Gleysteen
bostondesignguide.com 55

“The entire family may be staying all together in the
house for only 10 days a year,” explains Gleysteen.
“With this layout, the cool thing is the spaces that you
are not occupying are out of sight, out of mind. The
purpose of this design is to create a really warm living
space that’s useful.”
Glass walls along the back of the home are oriented
toward the majestic ocean views. Gleysteen also designed
large windows on the front, street-facing side of the cedarclad
home. “A big problem with waterfront homes is that
they are one-sided and have just a single orientation,”
says Gleysteen, who wanted there to be multiple vantage
points to appreciate from the interior. In the front yard, a
lush private garden sheltered from the street offers a Zenlike
view from the great room.
The home’s three volumes were designed to loosely
recall the forms of lobster shacks that dot coastal Maine’s
granite jetties. “We wanted to design something that was
evocative of a simpler time and place, while still feeling
modern,” says Gleysteen, noting that it was also important
the house be energy efficient. A metal roof contributes
to the home being airtight and wood was used on the
ceilings warm up the interior.
The naturally finished wire brushed oak on the ceiling
and floors is paired with a walnut-topped kitchen island
made by a local craftsman. Dark blue paint on the base
of the island gives it an unfussy appeal while adding
detail; whimsical marble inlaid with a floral motif was
used for the backsplash.
Among the home’s focal points is the stairway: a wood,
steel, and glass form that feels both simple and elegant.
While the sculptural stair may have hallmarks of others
Gleysteen has created, it isn’t an exact replica of another
design. “We don’t use the same details over and over.
We may take something we did in the past and use it as
a starting point for something we do in a new home, but
the end result will always be different,” he explains. “Each
house we do has to be better than the last.”
The homeowners, a young family with two children, knew
they’d found their forever home when they discovered
this stately 120-year-old home in Chestnut Hill. The
Shingle Style home had gracious period details, a
secluded setting, and a lush rolling lawn. Yet the expansive
residence had been renovated poorly over the years,
resulting in a few disjointed additions that significantly
impeded the flow of the house and its connection to the
landscape. Prior to purchasing the home, the homeowners
had promised the sellers that they would not tear it down
and would work with the town preservation commission to
update the house while preserving its historic character. To
achieve this, they contracted LDa Architecture & Interiors.
“The clients had an eye and interest to see what the house
could be,” says John Day, principal of LDa Architecture &
Interiors and lead architect for the design of the project.
“They loved the character and charm of the house, so we
rebuilt everything in its historic language.”
Using historic photographs of the original home, along
with three-dimensional renderings, Day and his team
created models to show the homeowners what the
property used to look like and what it could be. From
there, the team photographed every finish inside the
home and then replicated the elements with evolving
technology and more updated space planning.
68
bostondesignguide.com

The carriage house includes a second story guest suite and is connected to the main house by a
glass-enclosed breezeway with a mudroom, laundry room, and powder room located off it.
bostondesignguide.com 69

The home’s second, rear stairway
was removed and the main stair was
redone in steel and brass, an elegant
winding form that connects the three
floors and filters sunlight from the top
floor through the lower levels.
70
bostondesignguide.com

With the old single-glazed windows still intact, the home maintains its entire original structure.
Copper gutters painted to look wooden were created, along with a third-floor dormer that had
been removed. The team infilled a rubber-roof porch with glass above the dining and living rooms
to create a sitting room off the master bedroom that resembles the original screened-in porch that
had been previously taken down.
“We wanted to make a house that performs like a modern house but maintains its historic look,”
says Jim Youngblood, owner of Youngblood Builders and the lead builder for the project. “As a
company, we specialize in historic properties, so I enjoy the challenge of an older home.”
Youngblood and Day worked closely with their teams to transform the basement into a fully
finished living space and replaced the old cinder block garage with a new carriage house.
Taking down several walls made it possible to open up the first floor and better connect the spaces
to the exterior, with great views of the yard and terrace visible through all areas of the home. The
main stairway was redone to become a focal point: capped with a black iron baluster and brass
bostondesignguide.com 71

Top left: Brass was used for the kitchen hardware and Visual Comfort pendants
above the island. Bottom left: In the family room, built in shelves flank a fireplace
and a painting conceals the television when not in use. Below: Multiple seating areas
provide ample spots to appreciate the setting. All outdoor furniture is JANUS et Cie.
cap railing, it engages the home and floods it with natural
light, extending to the third floor.
Classic and period-appropriate materials decorate
the interior, creating clean lines with timeless accents.
Vicki Baker of Su Casa Designs worked closely with the
homeowners, who were moving from the city, to set the
aesthetics. “The main thing was that they wanted it to be
a practical, comfortable family house. With such young
children, they didn’t want to worry about fabrics,” says
Baker. With a backdrop of neutral and muted tones,
the space is bright and inviting. Baker veered away from
any furnishings that could be trendy and selected classic
pieces along with a few Danish modern items that the
homeowner had an affinity for. Wide plank fumed white
oak floors give the home a lived-in quality and the creation
of several arches keeps rooms from feeling closed off from
one another.
Working around a 150-year-old copper beech tree that
they family wanted to preserve, Dan Gordon Landscape
Architects worked to create a yard suitable for the family.
“We added a fence and hedge for privacy and expanded
and improved the patio areas,” says Dan Gordon, the
landscape architect for the project. “We graded the lawn
to make it a flat area for active play, but also preserved
the roll.”
The homeowners’ enthusiasm and the design team’s
interest in reviving the treasured historic residence
propelled the project forward and achieved a glorious
finished result. “Understanding what the house had been
and finding the path to bring it back but with modern
standards was a rewarding experience,” says Day. “The
entire team was on an exploration and the clients really
embraced shepherding this house forward.”
Place
traditional and contemporary design elements.
bostondesignguide.com

Jacob Lilley spent his childhood in a house that was
600-years-old in which the roof rafters were made of tree
trunks. Needless to say, the England-born architect, “grew
up with an appreciation of old buildings,” recalls Lilley,
whose eponymous firm is based in Wellesley.
Lilley and his wife, Rebecca, were drawn to their current
home, a tree-shrouded slate-roofed Tudor built in 1915,
for its provenance as well as for its location across from a
pond in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Surrounded by
lush plantings, a series of terraces, and other stonework,
“The site had beautiful topography to it, but the house
had very limited communication to the outdoors,” says
Lilley. The interior also hadn’t been significantly updated
in decades: rooms were choppy and the layout wasn’t
conducive to modern family living.
After living in the house for over a year, Lilley began
drafting plans for a gut renovation that included the
addition of a large family room that connects to the
backyard, a secluded and lush oasis with mature plantings
that has a storybook quality to it. Glass accordion doors
on two sides of the spacious room open to the outdoors.
“One side opens on to the terrace and the
other side opens to a Japanese garden we’re working
on,” says Lilley.
In order to add on the family room, however, the existing
terraces had to be deconstructed and rebuilt. Once the
addition was in place, Lilley tapped Sudbury Design Group
to create the new outdoor living area off the back of the
house, which took cues from the original design while
adding modern touches including a firepit and water
features. Bluestone stairs connect the terrace’s two levels,
which are made of ashlar cut granite.
An existing screened-in porch was kept intact and paired
with the new outdoor spaces, the Lilleys found they had
ample areas to host neighbors and friends during 2020’s
summer and fall of Covid. “Because we could open all the
doors in the family room people could be outdoors at the
firepit or inside by the open doors, it was really great,”
says Lilley.
The addition of the family room, which has a contemporary
feel with its vaulted, gable ceiling and exposed trusses and
black and white Chinese Panda marble fireplace, became
the catalyst for the updated aesthetic throughout the rest
of the home. “We went with a transitional feel to create
a nice resonance between the old and new details of the
house,” says Lilley. “While rooms have a lot of original
traditional detail, furnishings and finishes are clean and
contemporary.”
bostondesignguide.com 77

Furniture is predominately low-profile and sleek, including the
iconic Mies van der Rohe Barcelona Chair in the living room
and a B & B Italia sofa in the family room; lighting throughout
the house also has a very modern, statement making appeal.
Most of the floors in the house are white oak and walls and
trim are painted white in several rooms, so Lilley incorporated
walnut wood to infuse warmth in key places, including the base
of the kitchen island and behind a new streamlined built-in
cabinet in the dining room.
To help make some selections for the interior fabrics, art, and
wallcoverings, the Lilleys tapped Blake Maroon and Laura
Finnerty of Wanderlust Interiors. “Jake and Rebecca had a
good idea of what they wanted so it was easy to work with
them,” says Maroon. “We had fun too, Rebecca wanted a little
more color than Jake did and the push and pull that went on
with that was a fun aspect of the project.”
One of Maroon’s suggestions was to put Cole & Son’s
Fornasetti’s cloud motif wallcovering on the ceiling in the
den. “The paper went with Jake and Rebecca’s concept of
integrating the interior with the outdoors and looks cool
and unexpected as you approach the room,” she says of the
somewhat moody black and white pattern. Deep gray-hued
crushed velvet roman shades add elegance to the room,
while aligning with the first floor’s grey and white palette. The
living room walls are painted another variation of grey, Farrow
& Ball’s Moles Breath, which has a blue tint that contrasts
beautifully with the white painted trim and moldings.
The grey in the dining room’s Phillip Jeffries grasscloth mural
wallcovering features silvery tones in an ombre pattern.
A sculptural square chandelier, Quasar’s “Universe,” was
constructed by intertwining nickel and glass bars. While
the fixture makes a dramatic impact hung above the table,
its wiry nature doesn’t obstruct the view of the artistic wallcovering
or detract from the room’s original architectural
details, including the crown molding and narrow interior
windows that open to the screened in porch.
“As an architect on Wellesley’s historic commission, I could
never buy a house and tear it down,” says Lilley. “For
me, personally, it was important to give back to this old
house.” With subtle gestures, he continues, “we melded
the contemporary and traditional throughout the house
and tried to find resonance between the two.” Indeed, his
efforts were a profound success.
This reimagined home embodies modern technology and style.
This stunning Boston-area residence, designed by
Slocum Hall Design Group, built by Concept Building,
Inc., with interiors by Briar Design, features Prairiestyle
architecture elevated to a new level with modern
amenities and a stunning landscape.
Dubbed the ‘Modern Prairie’ project, from the very
start of this extraordinary build, which you can follow
by visiting bostondesignguide.com/modern-prairie,
a meaningful collaboration was born, creating a true
example of how great work is achieved.
The client chose the team while they were seeking
a site on which to build. From there, the vision took
hold. “This house is both modern and timeless,”
states David Boronkay, principal/owner of Slocum Hall
Design Group. “Much of the home’s design relates to
the land. It is sited to take advantage of spectacular
views and hug the landscape with a huge walkout
lower level. Since the property sits on a pretty steep
grade, the house is situated mid-slope so that the
front elevation of the home is low-slung. Seeing this
truly unique project come to life with Jeff and Alan
at Concept Building and the rest of the collaborative
team has been a fascinating process.”
February of 2019. “There is nothing cookie-cutter about
this house. Everything was challenging. Every day, we
found a solution,” says Baima. Jeff and Alan worked
closely throughout the process with the owners of Systems
Design and Integration (SDI), Alexa and Angel Centeno,
whose company integrates smart home system technology
into spaces. They collaborated to ensure that every home
automated function is operated by voice, phone, or iPad.
The home boasts ample spaces for entertaining,
relaxation, and recreation, including an indoor spa
designed by Combined Energies, Inc. Other striking
focal points worth mentioning are the central dualsided
fireplace, the stunning decorative lighting, and
the beautiful white oak incorporated throughout the
home’s first floor, anchored by the eye-catching white oak
and black multi-level staircase. Another fireplace in the
spa area, which features the latest in water vapor flame
technology, nestles uniquely against a window overlooking
the backyard; Commonwealth Fireplace installed
both fireplaces.
Extensive stone cladding sheaths the base of the house.
Retaining walls for the sloping property were fabricated
off-site by Natural Stone Wall Solutions using their
proprietary modular wall system and later assembled onsite.
Their sister company, Old Village Landscape, installed
traditional stone veneer to the facade and fireplace
surrounds within the home.
A historic property in Little Compton gets
sustainable updates with timeless appeal.
A large part of the renovation of this charming Little
Compton residence revolved around making sure it was
an airtight space which required significant updates. “We
stripped the home down to its original post and beam
structure and reframed the walls to get the necessary
insulated value,” says Andrew Cliff, project manager
of Arkins Construction, the firm that spearheaded
construction on the renovation. The need for fossil fuels
was eliminated on the property by installing solar panels.
A green roof was planted on top of the addition and
the home’s original stone foundation was wrapped with
a rubber membrane to make the basement watertight.
While the home’s new systems ensure that it maintains
a modernized eco-friendly footprint, interior details nod
to its origins. The original 18th-century floors and post
and beam frame have been preserved on the main level
along with three fireplaces and a beehive oven.
The main chimney made out of ship’s ballast brick
imported from the Netherlands in the 1700s was rebuilt
with the same joinery used back then. As with the way
the landscape was designed and installed with reverence
to the property’s provenance, Cliff says, “We worked
hard to make sure the craftsmanship matched the timeperiod
of the house.”
FORWARD MOMENTUM
The future looks bright for Kistler & Knapp Builders.
One of the region’s most venerable construction firms,
Kistler & Knapp (KKB) has been building architecturally
designed custom homes and renovating storied antique
estates for over 40 years. The firm’s success can be
attributed largely to the strong team-minded, collaborative
approach its founders, Dennis Kistler and David Knapp,
ingrained in the business.
Teamwork is at the core of Kistler & Knapp and two of the
most seasoned managers are taking over as principals,
Reihl Mahoney and Ken Frommer. “Reihl and Ken have
been running day-to-day construction operations for
KKB for over 15 years now and have always cared for the
business as if it was their own,” says Renee West, who
recently passed her ownership share on to the duo. “In a
sense, this is really just a formality. Retirement was an easy
decision to make… I knew I was leaving the company in
capable hands.”
Mahoney, a 35+ year-veteran of custom architecturally
designed residential construction is considered the team’s
‘Old House Guru’ but is also equally comfortable guiding
the team through the demands of innovative, modern
construction designs. “Renee has played an integral role
as CFO, and an equally important role as ‘mama bear’ to
each and every employee here at KKB. Those are some
difficult shoes to fill,” says Mahoney.
Frommer spent years in commercial construction in
Boston managing $100 million commercial projects before
transitioning to the custom residential market. A part of
the Kistler & Knapp team for the past 17 years, Frommer
says that he never imagined he’d become such an integral
part of the business and he couldn’t be happier to be
where he is today. “The people here at Kistler & Knapp
make this a special place to work and I am truly honored to
be a part of what the future brings.”
It’s full steam ahead for Kistler & Knapp. “There is a lot
of great work out there and KKB is poised to embrace
another four decades,” says Mahoney. ‘The team has
performed impressively throughout Covid and we are
ready to expand as the market opens up. We embrace a
regional approach and can build anywhere – from Boston,
Cambridge and the suburbs, to the Cape & Islands, to
Newport, to the Berkshires and Vermont — or even PEI \
Nova Scotia — anywhere there is a great project, we’ll go!”
RURAL
REINVENTION
A new family home is designed
to connect with its serene, natural
setting while providing ample
opportunities to gather.
When the homeowners purchased this secluded parcel in
Concord, there were no existing structures on the threeacre
property, a lush meandering combination of meadow
and farmland punctuated by historic white oak trees. They
sought to preserve the tucked away, tranquil nature of the
landscape while building a forever-home for their family
of four. As they planned to relocate from out of state, the
homeowners tapped Hutker Architects to design their
new residence.
“They came to us with an aggressive deadline,” recalls Jim
Cappuccino, a partner with the firm and the lead architect
on the project; associate Erin Levin also contributed to the
design. “In a little more than a year the family had to be
moved into the house—in time for the start of the school
year in September,” he says.
The couple hired Brookes + Hill Custom Builders, a firm
that has great synergy with the Hutker team. “They had
interviewed a couple of other builders, but when we
met with them, we just all hit it off and that was it,” says
Brookes + Hill principal Eric Hill.
Cappuccino devised plans for a sprawling one-level
home comprised of simple, cedar clad gable forms that
take cues from the pastoral setting of the property. A key
emphasis in the design phase was put on how the home
connects with its surroundings. “During the day as you
approach the house you notice how it sits in reverence to
the landscape,” says Cappuccino. “At night when it’s all lit
up inside, you get a different perspective from outside of
the house—it’s about seeing the artwork through the large
expanses of glass.”
bostondesignguide.com 131

Some walls in the home, including in the great room,
had to be reinforced to accommodate the weight of the
artwork hung. The fireplace’s honed marble surround
extends on both sides to create a built-in bench and wood
storage. The dining table can extend to seat 12 people.
“Large scale art requires big expanses of walls
and figuring that out was tricky.”
—Jim Cappuccino
Showcasing the homeowners’ diverse collection of art was an
integral facet of the project. “Over the years, they’d collected a lot
of art and having space to hang the art was something we put a lot
of thought into,” says Cappuccino. A hallway that runs along the
central living space at the front of the home serves as a gallery that
showcases several works; other pieces are hung in various rooms.
“Large scale art requires big expanses of walls and figuring that out
was tricky because it was also important that abundant windows
showcase views of the yard and bring in sunlight,” says Cappuccino.
The house is comprised of three separate volumes attached by glasswalled
connectors, which filter in considerable sunlight throughout
the adjacent spaces. Additionally, since the main living area—located
in the central volume of the house—is one-and-a-half stories high,
two shed dormers were created in the roof that filter light down into
the great room, where walls were created to hang art.
bostondesignguide.com 133

The kitchen islands are oriented to
take in the view of the meadow.
Behind the range, a wall of marble
serves as a striking backsplash.
The exterior’s simple rustic forms give way to a more
modern interior, where the color scheme defers to the
artwork and the ever-evolving hues of the landscape.
Throughout, furnishings exude a low-profile and materials
feel natural and evocative of the setting, such as the
gallery floor, which is made of petrified stone inset with
tiny fossils. “It’s clean-lined and modern with a warmth and
organic quality to it,” says Cappuccino.
The wife has family in the area, in fact, says Hill, her sister
was able to build a home next door. “Their plan was to
live together and create a sort of compound.” To accommodate
the extended family for meals, the homeowners
134
bostondesignguide.com

The homeowners often prepare meals for gatherings of
friends and family. Kitchen designers Venegas & Company
designed two kitchen islands to provide ample prep space and
room for guests to lounge while the homeowners cook.
gabled form. The master shower integrates with an outdoor version that has a wood screen to ensure privacy; the gallery was
designed to accommodate several paintings that the homeowners’ had in storage for years.
equested easy gathering spaces both indoors and out.
“The husband and wife both love to cook, so the kitchen
was an important part of the project,” says Cappuccino.
Designed by Venegas & Company, dual quartz-topped
islands provide plenty of prep space as well as seating so
the cook can have company while he or she preps dinner.
But when the family needs downtime, the floorplan allows
for everyone in the family to have their own space. The
kids’ bedroom suites are to the left of the home’s central
volume and the master, encompasses the wing on the
opposite side.
In the end, the strict timeline was met: the family was
moved in before the school year began. “We were able
to achieve this because the homeowners were capable of
making quick decisions and we had such a good design
team,” says Jessica Griffith, another principal at Brookes +
Hill. “We’d meet once a week to go over the deliverables.
Everyone understood that if you didn’t get done what you
were supposed to the family wasn’t going to be in on time.
We all had to be very collaborative and fast, and we did it.
It was really special how it all came together.”
bostondesignguide.com 139

“It was important that the family could get outside as
much as possible,” says Cappuccino, noting the home’s
various seamlessly integrated access points to the
outdoor patios and lawn beyond.
True to Form
An historic home is revitalized with modern attributes
while retaining its authentic character.
The perimeter counters are made of impervious soapstone
and a ladder slides the length of one wall to access the upper
cabinets. “It’s a decorative element that provides utility,” says
Larson. Opposite page: Installing a pizza oven was at the top
of the family’s wish list.
144 bostondesignguide.com

In the late 1800s, much of Boston’s elite hired the
esteemed architectural firm of Chapman & Frazer to
design their homes in Back Bay, Brookline, and Newton.
Among the firm’s commissions was this stately Federal
Revival. Appreciative of the pedigree of the 1898
residence, the new homeowners wanted to maintain its
period detailing, which includes paneled and arched
openings between rooms, fluted columns, and decorative
leaded glass.
Some interior modifications had to be made, though, to
make the house suited to an active family of five, which
included a two-story addition at the back of the house
that accommodates a new kitchen and a second story
office and recreation room.
The project’s biggest undertaking was to relocate the
gambrel-roofed barn from the back of the property to
connect with the residence. “It took us a solid year to
get the move approved by the historic preservation
commission,” recalls the architect on the project, Kent
Duckham. When the approval came through, the barn
bostondesignguide.com 145

The walnut used in the butler’s pantry is stained
darker than it is in the kitchen. “The darker finish has
a richer feel and is period specific to what would have
been used in a butler’s pantry around when the home
was built,” says Larson. Brass hardware and the glass
front upper cabinets that showcase barware and
serving dishes, also ties into the era.
was moved to the side of the property while a new
foundation was created next to the house for it. Then, it
was moved again and put on the foundation and restored;
an enclosed breezeway connects the converted barn, now
a garage, to the house.
Inside, the detailed trim and paneling that was authentic
to the house was preserved and elements in the home’s
new areas were recreated that emulate the home’s late
19 th -century spirit. “We worked carefully to bring spaces
up to 21 st century style without losing the original character
of the home,” says Brett Larson, of Fallon Custom Homes
and Renovations, the firm that built out the renovation,
designed the kitchen, and fabricated the custom millwork.
The expansive new kitchen is anchored by a white quartztopped
island that takes the form of an old farmer’s
trestle table. “It has a stained walnut trestle frame inset
with natural oak boards that mimic the tongue and grove
boards that we installed on the ceiling to give warmth to
the space,” says Larson.
The kitchen has an integrated dining area which has a
built-in upholstered bench flanked by floor-to-ceiling
bookcases and doors that lead to the yard. A black and
white color scheme both ties the room together and
differentiates the two spaces: in the dining area black
accents contrast with white painted trim, while the
utilitarian part of the room features a predominately white
scheme with black painted trim.
The kitchen flooring is laid in a herringbone pattern, which
is in keeping with the aesthetic in the older part of the
home. Made of rift and quartered white oak, the floors
throughout the home were stained with a custom color
that took about 12 different iterations to perfect, says Jay
Bourgeois, owner of JJ Hardwood Flooring, the team
that installed all of the floors in the house. “We did what’s
called a ‘water pop’ to the floors to achieve this color,”
says Bourgeois. “Water is applied to the floor and when it
hits the wood, it opens the grain and allows it take more
color from the stain.”
Southern yellow pine was used for the breezeway’s vaulted ceiling while the
walls are clad with board and batten paneling.
The floors on the upper-level addition are wide plank
custom walnut, which has a slightly more modern
feel. Fallon’s carpentry team used post and timber
construction in the new portion to create open space
and architectural details that felt original to the house.
On the exterior, the home’s existing dormers had to be
matched and the new paneling, columns and surrounds
were inspired by the existing architecture. “We also
had to restore all of the home’s windows—the historic
commission wouldn’t let us replace them. So, we sent
them all out to a company to be fixed,” says Duckham.
It was a lengthy process, but one that he and the entire
design team respected.
“The home being in a historic district created challenges
with materials we could use and the details that had to
be preserved,” says Duckham, “but everyone involved
was really committed to doing things the right way.”
“I’m not afraid of color,” says Barbara Elza Hirsch, owner
and principal designer of Elza B. Design. Refusing to be
defined by one single style, Hirsch designs spaces that
reflect her eclectic and whimsical taste, drawing inspiration
from nature and her European background. Combining
different colors and textural elements, Hirsch and her team
create clean, crisp, and organic interiors.
Spending time in Europe growing up exposed Hirsch
to the beauty of merging styles. It was there that she
found modern bathrooms inside 17 th -century buildings.
Witnessing the dismissal of restrictive design rules in
Europe enlightened Hirsch. “Italy and France are very
eclectic and they’re not afraid to blend an antique next to
a modern lamp and that’s how I proceed,” says Hirsch. “I
don’t like to feel bound by rules and I think it’s a lot more
fun when you can mix and blend pieces with shapes from
other eras.”
In addition to drawing inspiration from European style,
Hirsch is influenced by her surroundings in nature. Picking
up on nature’s inherent beauty helps her select colors,
fabrics, and rugs to achieve an organic vibe.
“I’m very attuned to my surroundings and I find walking in
nature and being near the ocean refreshing and inspiring,”
says Hirsch. “Being close to nature infuses me, so I always
have that in the back of my mind.”
dark blue sectional sofa is upholstered in Holly Hunt fabric
that is forgiving with stains. Lively pink and orange tones on
the throw pillows compliment the art displayed throughout
the house and flecks of turquoise on the pillows tie into
the Zoffany wallcovering in the adjacent powder room. A
custom wool rug is inspired by a Richard Ginori dinnerware
pattern connects with the jeweled palette.
The sheer drapes in Kravet fabric is combined with
a large 36” wide embroidered border at the base in
Schumacher’s Cordoba Indigo fabric, it grounds the room
while letting light into the space. “None of the patterns
are repeated but have similar shapes and colors which
brings the space together,” says Sayeed.
FAMILY FOCUS
An antique carriage house is reimagined for a couple
of doting grandparents by Acampora Interiors.
The homeowners of this 19 th century home in Concord—a former
carriage house—downsized from the large house in which they’d
raised their four kids.
“However, the couple is very family-centric. They have lots of
grandchildren and two dogs,” says Corinne Acampora, principal
of Wellesley Hills-based firm, Acampora Interiors. “They wanted a
place that could accommodate everyone in the family that also felt
comfortable and cozy when it’s just the two of them.”
Acampora worked with the couple to tailor the home’s aesthetic. Light,
airy colors—including cool ocean blues and sandy hues that recall
the dunes of Nantucket, where the couple has another home—were
incorporated into the décor, which has a bit of a traditional flair that’s in
keeping with the home’s architecture.
Upholstery fabrics are strong and durable, and the main living space
is flexible. Stools offer additional seating by the sofa and can easily be
moved out of the way when the grandchildren are playing on the floor.
Photography: Jessica Delaney
The kitchen was overhauled to exude more modern detailing including
marble counters, but the original fir floors remain in there and throughout
the house. “While we briefly considered staining the floors, we
realized there was a warmth and coziness to them,” says Acampora.
While their new home is much smaller than the one the couple moved
from, there’s still ample space for sleepovers with the grandchildren.
daring elements, creative millwork,
large sectional; the chandelier has the look of tree branches and relates
to the rustic wood ceiling beams.
The homeowners of this Brookline home, New England natives
who’d recently moved back from Washington D.C., loved
its established neighborhood and that it was within walking
distance to the elementary school their young children would
eventually attend. The interior, however, needed a major
upgrade, says interior designer Robin Gannon. “The couple had
purchased the house from a developer who had renovated it,”
she recalls. “but it lacked character; the aesthetic was very vanilla
milkshake—there was no flavor to it.”
Gannon’s approach was to create a vibe that was youthful and
sophisticated, much like the homeowners themselves, with layers
of texture and pattern: a delightful mélange that includes art,
high gloss paint, and statement light fixtures in key places.
The tone of the house is apparent as soon as one enters the
front foyer. “You can tell right away that this is going to be a
really fun, playful sort of home and that these are cool people,”
she says. A black and white striped wallcovering by Schumacher
covers the walls of the double-height space, while a green
animal hide is layered over a vintage patterned rug. Two
benches upholstered in a zebra motif trimmed with leather flank
a pedestal table. “We needed seats for people to sit when they
take off their shoes,” says Gannon. “But we definitely didn’t want
to go with a typical wood bench.”
bostondesignguide.com 177

me,” says Gannon. “I feel it’s all about how you layer
elements so they feel connected, but distinguished.”
From the foyer, one catches a glimpse of the Audrey
Hepburn pop art on the wall of the adjacent dining
room. But it’s no longer a dining room, explains
Gannon, “it’s now considered a lounge. They
homeowners didn’t want a formal dining room in
favor of a swanky lounge place where they could
have friends over for cocktails and play poker.”
Antique mirrored glass is inset into the wood
paneled walls and a vintage game table paired with
a curved green velvet banquette and swanky armless
upholstered chairs festooned with fringe create a
mood evocative of the 1920s flapper era, which is
also when the house was built.
“Matching is a four-letter word to me, saying things
don’t match is the biggest compliment you can give
Gannon opts to mix finishes, woods, and metals in
most of the spaces she designs. In the living room,
she notes the Arteriors chandelier comprised of
mirrored silver discs. Brass is incorporated elsewhere
in the room, including in the library lights above the
built-in bookshelves. “Could we have found a brass
chandelier for the room? Yes, but the silver one is
more visually appealing, and the juxtaposition of
the different metals gives your eye reason to travel
around the room,” she says.
At the back of the house, the family room was long
and large, with two walls of windows. “Because it’s
so big and open, we needed to give the space a lot
of texture and warmth. The ceiling was a vast stretch
of plaster that stuck out like a sore thumb,” says
Gannon whose solution was to add reclaimed wood
beams to it to bring down the scale.
178
bostondesignguide.com

“Matching is a four-letter word to me, saying things don’t
match is the biggest compliment you can give me.”
—Robin Gannon
Three different seating areas were also created along
with a continuous window seat that runs the length of
the room. The trim and millwork are painted black to
recede into the walls, which are sheathed in a darker
toned Phillip Jeffries grasscloth. “If we painted the
woodwork white it would have just stuck out too
much,” says Gannon. Drapes in an Osborne & Little
hydrangea motif infuse a vivid splash of green, which
connects to the other variations of the hue throughout
the house, including in the master bedroom, where
the bed is upholstered in forest green leather.
“I strive to make rooms cohesive and connected in an
interesting way,” says Gannon. “The similarities can be
very subtle, just a shade or tint of a color, but it’s there
if you look.”
Clockwise from opposite page: Swivel chairs in the lounge are upholstered in Osborne & Little fabric;
the Schumacher wallpaper in the master bedroom depicts a vintage tree and sky motif; in the living
room, the fireplace’s original brick paneling had been plastered over, Gannon had it removed and
selected a modest reclaimed beam as the mantle.
STREAMLINING
SELECTIONS
Simplify the kitchen design process by
selecting the appliances first.
The Wolf Convection Steam Oven is Clarke’s big surprise. Homeowners add this to their wish list more often than any other appliance
after a visit to Clarke’s Showroom.
By Kelly McCoy
For many, starting a kitchen project begins with the
cabinets. While it’s helpful to clarify your personal style by
browsing websites and magazines and talking to friends,
great kitchen layouts actually start by researching appliances.
“Once we discuss a homeowner’s vision and lifestyle, we
recommend that they start researching appliances,” says
Westborough Design Center’s Claudette Andrew. “Many
times homeowners don’t realize all of the exciting options,
and appliance selection will definitely impact the layout and
design of the kitchen. Doing that research up front, which
we can help with, saves time and helps to prevent redesigns
when they realize they really want to add a steam oven or
built-in coffee center or wine storage.”
When you think about it, it makes sense. Your layout may
be very different if you select a Wolf 48” Dual-Fuel Range
than if you envision an induction cooktop and built-in
wall ovens. Perhaps you’d like to incorporate Sub-Zero
refrigerator drawers (rated by designers as their favorite
appliance) or integrate wine storage into your kitchen
design? In fact, the Wolf Convection Steam Oven is the
top choice for visitors to Clarke, New England’s Official
Sub-Zero, Wolf & Cove Showroom. “Once homeowners
see the Convection Steam Oven in action at our
showroom, they just have to have one, “says Clarke Boston
showroom manager Jeremy McCulla.
Ready to start dreaming about a new kitchen? You won’t
buy anything at Clarke, so there’s no pressure. You’ll simply
learn from the industry’s top appliance experts and, if you
would like to purchase Sub-Zero or Wolf appliances, you’ll
be referred to an authorized dealer in your area.
SCANDIA KITCHENS, INC.
Manufacturer of New England’s Finest Quality Kitchens & Cabinetry
Quality Control
Incorporated in 1978 by David Dorrer Sr. and his wife, Linda,
Scandia Kitchens, Inc. located in Bellingham, is still New
England’s leading manufacturer of fine custom cabinetry.
Over 40 years later, the hard work and dedication of David
and Linda’s continues to the next generation with their four
children who are all involved in the business. The cabinets
for any room in your home, are designed and made to order
in the 15,000 square foot factory and showroom.
“Quality has always been the most important factor to
us.” says Colleen Lord, one of Dorrer’s daughters who is a
designer. Because we manufacture and install everything,
we have full control over the product and we can make sure
that it is built exactly to fit the clients needs. You will not find
a better built cabinet.”
Over four decades after opening David Sr. remains at the
helm sharing his remarkable wisdom and making sure
that everything that is manufactured is up to the Scandia
standard. Linda, the matriarch of the family and business,
sadly passed away but her passion, vision, and work ethic
are just a few things that will live on forever within the
Dorrer family. Everyone that had the opportunity to work
with Linda at the showroom or during homeshows saw
exactly how charismatic she was.
The company’s devoted clientele will attest that a kitchen
crafted by Scandia is utterly unrivaled when it comes to
quality, design, and distinction.
Cumar works with designers to
source exotic stones.
“There is an artisanship to what we do,” says
Carlotta Cubi Mandra, vice president of Cumar,
a family-owned business located in Everett that
specializes in the custom fabrication of natural
stone. With 29 years of industry experience,
Cumar works closely with interior designers and
architects on creative projects that continue to
push boundaries and raise the bar.
“What I love about working with tradespeople
is their creativity and how they envision a space
in a way only a professional can,” says Mandra.
“Executing their ideas is exciting and challenging
and makes us unique because we have the specific
skillset required for these unusual projects.”
When interior designer Barbara Kotzen brings
clients to Cumar she understands the overall
feeling of the room they are trying to create.
“Starting with the finishes in the room, I navigate
my client through different colors and tones that
will work within the scheme we’ve begun to pull
together,” says Kotzen.
Photograph: Warren Patterson
Working with Cumar for over 15 years, Kotzen
and her clients choose from their variety of highquality
stones sourced from quarries in Italy,
including marble, quartzite, quartz, granite, and
semi-precious slabs. For a recent project, Kotzen
designed a bar with a cerused black oak finish
wood base paired with a calcutta cielo marble top
and backsplash. With charcoal undertones and
different shades of gray running through, the stone
is accentuated by overhanging Holly Hunt lights
and collected antique glassware is displayed in the
matching black oak cabinetry.
Collaborating with designers motivates Cumar’s
team to push the envelope as they navigate
intricate residential projects. From discussing
project design initiatives to establishing materials
and conducting field evaluations and installations,
Mandra emphasizes the value of working with
tradespeople. “It makes the project run smoother
since they have experience and also helps
guide the homeowner throughout the decisionmaking
process.”
FEMININE
New Ravenna’s latest collection of handcrafted
mosaics were designed to celebrate women artisans
through the ages.
Focusing in on five disciplines: quilting, pottery,
embroidery, weaving, and textiles, New Ravenna’s Femme
& Function collection features 20 designs inspired by the
legacy of women pioneers in functional art. “Often the
creative mavens worked in obscurity. We wanted to shine
light on all of the women throughout history who have
made beautiful, functional art forms,” says Cean Irminger,
New Ravenna creative director. All of the 20 designs can
be customized in size and color; they can be installed on
walls and floors, indoors and out.
Inspirations span time periods and geography, from
ancient Japanese Shibori hand dying techniques, to
the use of geometry and subtle palettes by indigenous
potters, from the traditional quilting patterns passed down
through generations of unknown homemakers, to the
natural motifs and painted textile work of the British arts
and crafts movement. Irminger and her team designed
textures and material that emulate the feel of the different
functional art forms: textured materials such as tumbled
stones and metallic glazed basalto are sprinkled in with a
dimensional palette to capture the essence and interplay
of woven goods and embroidery.
New Ravenna’s personal story overlaps with Femme &
Function on several fronts. As creators of decorative,
functional goods, the company is female founded and the
majority of the staff is female. “Mosaics are handmade and
tell a unique story of the skill set and voice of the artist
who created it,” says Irminger. “Not everyone who works
here is known by name, but what they create will stay
around for generations.”
With its deep black background and striking white veining,
the polished Skyfall granite topped island is a showstopper
in this suburban kitchen. To source, fabricate, and install the
counters in their new kitchen, the homeowners contracted
Onyx Marble & Granite.
The island features a dark wood base. Paired with the multifaceted
dark granite top, the piece is the focal point of the
room, which features white cabinetry, walls clad with subway
tile, and brass hardware. The island’s bold stone top adds
wow-factor and “gives that final touch” to the room, says Jose
Moraes, president of Onyx Marble & Granite. “A lot of people
tend to go with very simple colors and this particular stone
goes beyond the usual.”
Much more subtle in contrast to the granite island, are the
kitchen’s surrounding calacatta retro marble counters. With a
milky white background and deep gray veins running through,
the counters seamlessly flow into the cabinetry and a honed
finish leaves them matte and smooth.
In addition to its stellar stonework, the communication the
Onyx Marble & Granite team provides to their clients sets
them apart from other companies, according to Moraes. “We
try to be there for them at all times, answering questions as
fast as we can and that makes us a little different.”
Designed for a
multi-generational
family to enjoy for
years to come, this
new retreat exudes a
BEAUTYtime-honored vibe.
At first glance, this gracious Shingle Style home looks
as though it’s been perched in its spot along the
Massachusetts coastline for the last century or so. And
that was precisely the intent, says architect Tom Catalano.
“We wanted the home to feel timeless and not be obvious
that it’s a brand-new house now, or in 75 years.” The
homeowners’ vision was to build a generational summer
retreat that they would enjoy with their children and future
grandchildren.
Designed to accommodate family gatherings, the main
home is equipped for entertaining large groups yearround;
it also serves as a quiet place for the couple to
unwind and work. With guest quarters located above
the detached garage and a beach cottage that the
husband uses as his office, each structure exists in harmony
with each other and the landscape, creating a lovely,
secluded oasis.
From the front, the home is inviting and warm. Blue
shutters compliment the shingled exterior, and a glimpse
of the ocean is visible as soon as one steps through the
front door. Designed in a way that balances the orientation
to the view with the correct orientation to the sun, the
interior is constantly filled with natural light. With extensive
millwork and decorated in shades of white, blue, and sand
tones, there is a cohesive flow throughout the home, yet
each room has a distinct appeal.
“The attention to detail throughout the house makes each area
feel different. We used wallcoverings to add texture in some
spaces and only the dining room and master bedroom have drapes
since we didn’t want anything to block the view.”
—Barbara Kotzen, Kotzen Interiors
“We worked to create a design that was sensitive to its
context, resilient given its exposure, and appropriate for its
setting amongst early 20th century shingled houses.”
—Tom Catalano, Catalano Architects
In the kitchen, interior designer Barbara Kotzen selected
a gray and green Del Mare granite for the island and
countertops, with a Thassos marble mosaic backsplash.
The same stone and backsplash are used in the pantry,
located off of the kitchen, where the homeowners store
large appliances and an additional refrigerator. Across
from the kitchen is a butler’s pantry and wet bar with
translucent green quartzite countertops and a rippled
mirrored mosaic backsplash, that sparkles when hit by
the sun.
bostondesignguide.com 243

Located in a flood zone, Catalano and Henry Ladd, principal of
Howland Company, worked to ensure the home is both resilient
and energy-efficient. “Being attentive to the smallest details is the
start of a high-performance home,” says Ladd, the lead builder on
the project. “From how the windows are installed, to the detailing
of the envelope, to the way everything is air sealed, it’s critical to
monitor all those little details.”
Despite community restraints on construction between Memorial
Day and Labor Day, the project was completed in two years. The
dynamic team met regularly on-site to identify and develop design
options, requiring an open line of communication and a level of
trust. “The homeowners were a dream to work with and everyone
was willing to listen to one another to move the project forward,”
says Catalano. “It was a successful arrangement with mutual
respect and clear expectations.”
The two-bedroom guest cottage is an idyllic spot for
visiting family members and friends to stay. Just outside
the main house is an infinity pool, outdoor patio, and
expansive lawn that leads to the beach cottage, which
was the only building that remains from the residence’s
previous incarnation. The cottage’s basic structure was not
changed, but a stone fireplace and glass doors that open
out to the water were added, creating a tranquil space
perfectly positioned on the ocean.
246 bostondesignguide.com

ostondesignguide.com 247

Ornamental blooming plants along the parking court and front door add
texture and color to the home. The same colors are reinforced along the
water side, but slowly transition to more ornamental grasses and resilient
shrubs that can withstand the ocean’s salt spray and seasonal storms.
A pitched wall surrounding the pool was designed to diminish wave action
and the edge of the infinity pool was engineered to withstand tidal floods,
according to Gregory Lombardi, the landscape architect for this project who
worked closely with Catalano designing a space that is fluid and open. “Tom
understands how landscape interacts with architecture and that allows us to
do our best work,” says Lombardi.
System 7’s
experience
center takes the
complexity out
of technology
decisions.
Systematic Approach
Gerard Lynch doesn’t want his customers to get
overwhelmed by the ever-evolving products, platforms,
and specifications of technology design. Rather, Lynch,
the president of System 7, a company that provides home
technology, lighting, and shading, strives to keep it simple.
“Our approach is simplicity, reliability, and aesthetics,”
says Lynch. “Homeowners want the latest systems; they
want them to work well and look beautiful. Our job is to
understand the technology and to help homeowners find
what they need.”
System 7’s umbrella includes Wolfers Lighting and the
Boston Shade Company. Last spring, the company opened
an experience center at the Boston Design Center and
later this year, a new Wolfers Lighting showroom modeled
after the Boston space will open in Wellesley.
The centers are educational, not sales-oriented, explains
Lynch. In both locations, visitors can learn about how
technology works and how home systems can tie multiple
aspects together. They’re also able to glean insights
about different lighting concepts—such as human centric
lighting, which puts the focus on bringing the dynamics
of natural daylight back into people’s everyday lives—and
view a variety of motorized shading options.
“When people come to our experience center they meet
with a designer rather than a salesperson and that’s what
sets us apart,” says Lynch. “We are design professionals
one-hundred percent devoted to lighting, shading, and
home technology.”
Into the
woods
A new home is designed in reverence
to its deeply wooded setting.
When the homeowners asked Michael Lynch, of Lynch
Construction and Remodeling, to visit a lot they were
considering purchasing to build their next home, he noticed
another much larger parcel across the street. “I suggested that
they consider the other lot instead because it had so much
more value than the first one,” recalls Lynch.
It didn’t take much convincing for the homeowners to see the
second site’s potential. Located in a secluded neighborhood
in Needham, the lot encompasses nearly 10 acres and borders
the Charles River. Much of the forested setting—which feels
more like a plot that could be found in the rustic New Hampshire
woods than in suburban Boston—is protected by the
Trustees of Reservations.
“The homeowners wanted the house to be all about the
forest views—the most important aspect was fitting the
house into the context of the site,” says Richard Curl,
principal of Curl Simitis Architecture + Design, who drafted
plans for the residence, while collaborating closely with
Lynch and Devin Hefferon, a senior associate at Matthew
Cunningham Landscape Design.
“It was literally a forest through the trees moment,” recalls
Hefferon. “How do you carve into this existing landscape
to make a home while preserving what makes the site so
special?” The site’s existing topography dictated where
the house would be set, including the access point for the
basement and the location of the home’s raised patios and
covered porch. “The homeowners had lived in Needham for
years and they wanted to stay there, close to their friends,”
says Hefferon. “However, they really wanted this place to
feel like a house in the woods and not a suburban home.”
While the lot had to be cleared to make space for the
house, the goal was to preserve as much of the vegetation
as possible. Additionally, the long term landscape plan
involves revegetating the property so over time, “there’s
a sense that it’s disappearing back into the woods,” says
Hefferon. “The house has both an old charm and modern
feel to it. We strove to make the landscape look natural to
nestle the house in.”
Unlike most of the other homes in the neighborhood,
the home is set far back from the road. The grade at the
back of the house drops dramatically and opens to the
woodland. “From there, the house feels very connected
to nature,” says Courtney Driver, an associate of Curl’s.
On the first floor, the family room has a wall of glass
overlooking the landscape and the adjacent family room
has three walls of windows. All of the bedrooms on the
second floor have views of the forested setting.
The homeowners envisioned a home with Shingle Style
characteristics. To make the structure fit within the context
of the wooded setting, shingles are slate in color and trim
is painted a black tone that matches the windows; stone
sheathes the base of the house. The rooflines are steep.
“We wanted the scale of the house to have a presence
among the trees,” says Curl. Slight embellishments to
the exterior add interest including a projecting triangularshaped
overhang above the front door known as a prow;
on the back of the house a gable features a projection that
combines a prow shape with the more curved essence of
an eyebrow motif.
“One of the reasons we were so excited to build the
house was because of these multi-plane, angled and
curved gables—they are complex to build, and require the
collaboration of some real skilled craftsmen,” says Lynch.
As the main focus of the project was incorporating views
into the home, the interior was kept very simple, with
minimal detailing says Curl. Much consideration was
devoted to the recreational pursuits of the homeowners’
two daughters, including the full basketball court that
was put into the garage. Initially, the basketball court was
planned for the basement, but that proved problematic.
“We would have needed to do a 20-foot excavation to
accommodate a basketball court in the basement,” says
Lynch. Ultimately, the garage, which has a 32-foot high
ceiling, was designed to include the court.
Upon the approach to the home, there isn’t a traditional
green lawn surrounding the residence. Instead, native
plantings take center stage. “We specifically chose
plant material that is native and has incredible fall color—
red maples, sweet spire, sweet ferns,” says Hefferon.
“The reds, yellows, and golds really make the property
sing in October.”
Clockwise from far left: The kitchen cabinets, custom built by
Kenyon Woodworking, are painted a dark gray while the island
base is walnut. White was used for the trim and quartz counters,
which keeps the space feeling light and airy; built-in shelves in
the family room showcase family treasures; a sliding glass pocket
door closes off the dog area from the main living space.
Above: The garage, where the basketball
court is located, soars to the tree-line over
30-feet-high. Wood clad garage doors
tie the structure to the forested setting.
Right: While the building has bands of
windows that let in ample sunlight, lights
set into the towering ceiling all for pick-up
games to be played after dark.
Boston Billiard Emporium’s Stephen Kelly
combines his passion for antiques with painstaking
craftsmanship to restore billiard tables to their former glory.
Captured
in time
The “Golden Age of Billiards” lasted
from the 1860’s until the Great
Depression. During this period, a
billiard table was not simply a game
table, it was a piece of furniture of
the highest caliber. These tables were
made by the finest artisans, using rare
woods from all over the world.
Since 1975, Boston Billiard Emporium
has been New England’s leading
conservator of antique billiard tables.
Owner Stephen Kelly combines his
love of antiques with the painstaking
craftsmanship required to bring the
exquisite billiard tables of a bygone
era back to their original grandeur.
Their tables have been featured in
books, movies and magazines, as
well as on NECN’s “Dream Home”
and PBS’ “This Old House”. Many of
New England’s interior designers as
well as architects have planned their
client’s billiard room around a billiard
table and accessories purchased from
Boston Billiards.
New pool tables are also available
at Boston Billiard Emporium. These
tables can be customized by selecting
the species of wood, color of stain,
cloth and pockets so that the table
works better in your space. You
will also find a great selection of
accessories, as well as a full-service
repairs department for anything that
may go wrong with your table.
Kragsyde blends naturally into the rocky bluff overlooking Lobster
low-maintenance granite. With Interiors designed by Meichi Peng
discerning owner who prefers a private neighborhood,
It is clear that Kragsyde was built for a
Luxury
Inside
When Dalia Tamari, (Founder of Dalia Kitchen Design and renowned
she spent three years designing and another 3 years to build her
I had access to the best” said Dalia, it had to be beautiful, but also,
practical, and livable. It is one of my greatest accomplishments.
