drive over the Bourne or Sagamore bridge ... that visceral feeling of leaving 

your stress behind and slowing to a pace that allows you to be present. 

For me, home is family, Cape Cod and being by or on the water. I’m a 

South Shore gal. I grew up in Scituate, and after starting a family, spent 

summers in Popponesset, MA. I’m fortunate to be able to channel my passion 

for the coast in my work here at the design guide. 

I never tire of each unique version of “home” I get to see here. The Cape’s 

most exceptional designers, architects, builders and supporting services 

are showcased throughout these pages. Every indoor and outdoor space 

has been masterfully tailored to fit the owner’s personality, lifestyle and vision

Reminiscent of a row of four interconnected cottages this Martha’s Vineyard Home 

celebrates modular symmetry and clean lines in a natural landscape. 

When envisioning her Martha’s Vineyard dream home, 

Molly Valle was drawn to symmetry and clean lines, linear 

building and modular designs. She and her fiancé owned 

three acres in Edgartown and planned to build a yearround 

home that would complement the striking natural 

landscape, without being an overwhelming presence. 

The couple worked with Molly’s brother, Christian Valle, 

and her parents, Joe and Joan Valle, all three of whom 

run the Valle Group, a well known custom home builder 

on Cape Cod, to create a sleek, understated, familyfriendly

cedar siding and white oak flooring throughout. Every inch 

of the house is purposeful, unfussy, warm and inviting. 

“It’s not a home where you have to take your shoes off,” 

Valle says. “I wanted it to feel spacious, yet intimate and 

comfortable.” 

Valle credits architect Dann Norris Batting and Valle Group 

project manager Justin Spurr for delivering a home that 

aligned with her vision without sacrificing form or function. 

At under 2100 square feet, the footprint is relatively small, 

but efficient, while lending itself well to future expansion. 

The couple designed outward instead of upward, making 

use of their stretch of land and keeping the house at one 

level, with the exception of one loft space. 

The home was carefully positioned to face SSW to make 

the most of the golden afternoon light. “Natural light was 

probably the most important thing for me,” Valle says. “ 

We spent a lot of time walking around the lot at different 

times of the day to choose the ideal placement.” Large 

banks of glass let sunlight stream in and bring expansive 

views of the landscape inside. The kitchen was built as the 

star of the show, and it’s truly spectacular, with an easy flow, 

plenty of seating and arguably the best views in the house. 

As a result of the collaboration with her mother, who is 

also an interior designer, there is a strong Scandinavian 

influence in the interior, seen in soft neutrals, streamlined 

functionality and warm white walls. But color is also a key 

element, mixed thoughtfully with sumptuous textures, 

small playful touches and consignment-shop finds. Tucked 

in a sunny nook of the kitchen is a soft, sienna-colored 

couch, where family and friends can lounge and have 

morning coffee. 

It’s these details that make this home a place for peaceful 

reflection. The open layout manages to provide private 

sanctuary spaces and gathering spots for small groups. 

The wood-burning fireplace is a favorite spot during the 

winter and, in summer, it’s the fire pit in the backyard, set 

against the sounds of bullfrogs and breezes through the 

field of wildflowers.

INTERIOR DESIGNER 

COASTAL STYLE, EMBODIED 

Meet Donna Elle of Donna Elle Design, an award-winning 

firm based in Nantucket. Elle has described her style as 

“designer clothes with bare feet,” and we couldn’t agree 

more. The essence of her aesthetic is that of a luxe vacation: 

soft, relaxed and playful, with an unexpected polish. 

Elle’s design is a far cry from the more literal “coastal 

style” of the past (no kitschy seahorse patterns or ‘Beach 

this Way’ signs here). She prefers to create a beachy 

atmosphere, using color and texture to conjure warm 

sand, salty air and reflections off the water. The result is 

an interior landscape as clean, bright and dynamic as the 

coast itself. 

With her sharp intuition at the helm of every project, 

Donna draws inspiration from summers at the beach 

throughout her childhood. “It’s about being tuned in 

to the nuances of island life,” she says, “the ocean, the 

wildlife, the quality of light, the air. It’s something you 

carry with you even if you move far from the sea.” 

Elle leaves plenty of breathable space in her design, 

balancing calm neutrals and exciting pattern play in 

perfect measure. Each room has a sense of openness 

and flow, celebrating the natural light and the character 

of the space. Natural coastal textures like rattan, wood 

and shell are thoughtfully layered, while subtle design 

elements pay homage to the sea: a scalloped-edge 

mirror, a sparkling chandelier, a side table with inlaid 

mother-of-pearl, and round mirrors reminiscent of 

portholes. 

In light of her company’s swiftly growing client base, 

Donna brought two additional team members onboard 

in recent years: Senior Designer Lauren Comley and 

Associate Designer Katie Williams (Elle’s daughter). 

Lauren brings years of experience in the fields of 

architecture and interior design. As a resident of Cape 

Cod, she too is endlessly inspired by the seaside and 

its colors, textures and essence. Katie is a veteran of 

the fashion retail world and along with a fresh creative 

perspective, she has introduced Design ID, an incredible 

e-design service that allows clients to move at their own 

pace. Together the team guides each client through the 

process of creating their dream space and bringing that 

vision to vibrant life. 

The Donna Elle team has brought their magic touch 

and impeccable expertise to various projects, from 

large-scale residential renovations and new builds 

to smaller redecorating endeavors. They have been 

featured in publications throughout New England such 

as Boston Home & Garden, New England Cape Cod & 

Islands Home, Boston Design Guide Cape and Islands,

In the historic district of a quaint village on 

Cape Cod, is an unmissable shingled cape 

on a corner lot. This timeless architectural 

gem was the result of collaboration 

between the homeowners, designers and 

the building teams. Together with the 

owners, LDa Architecture and Interiors 

and ARCHWRIGHT Fine Home Builders 

reimagined a tired cape as an expansive, 

sun-drenched stunner, which now serves as a 

gathering place for a large family during the 

warmer months. It’s the epitome of inviting, 

laid-back elegance. 

“The client had an exceptional eye for 

design,” remarks John Day, Principal at 

LDa Architecture and Interiors. “We really 

enjoyed the process of collaboration with 

them on such a beautiful retreat.” He notes 

that the owners embraced the historic 

guidelines, instead of seeing them as 

limitations. The cape was updated using 

traditional materials and details and is in 

perfect keeping with the historic nature of 

the neighborhood. The front of the original 

house was preserved and artwork that 

had once been painted on the mantle was 

salvaged and hung. 

Cara Meneses, co-founder of ARCHWRIGHT, 

also mentions the natural synergy of the 

teams and with the client, and echoes John 

Day’s appreciation for the homeowners’ 

sophisticated taste. “This home was 

designed to withstand family parties, sandy 

feet and furry four-legged friends,” she says, 

“without sacrificing beauty.” 

The renovations were substantial. The 

original home, which lacked insulation and 

a foundation, was lifted and repositioned to 

accommodate the new large addition on the 

steeply graded backyard. Project Manager 

Mike Bard was crucial to LDa’s success on 

the project, for which they were honored 

with the Silver Award for Excellence in 

Remodeling at the 2021 BRICC Awards. 

All of the teams recalibrated to keep 

the project running smoothly during the 

height of the pandemic. Meneses says that 

ARCHWRIGHT made many adjustments for 

efficiency during that time. For instance, all 

walls were prefabricated off site and arrived 

on a truck for framing. Project Manager 

Mike Mailloux was a pivotal part of onsite 

management. Meneses stresses that 

Mailloux’s skill and efficiency were critical.

Inside the house, Interior Designer Cynthia Hayes 

worked her minimalist magic, creating a comfortable and 

uncluttered space. Streamlined functionality and breezy 

simplicity are her trademarks. Sticking with a neutral 

palette (apart from a mallard-green office tucked away 

upstairs), Hayes incorporated natural beachy fibers like 

linen and sisal. In the crisp white kitchen, there isn’t a 

pattern in sight; the cabinets, glossy countertops and tile 

backsplash are solid white. Custom upper cabinets extend 

up to the ceiling, creating extra storage and visually giving 

even more height to the room. Like the rest of the house, 

the kitchen feels open and airy, with a triple window above 

the sink and outstanding millwork throughout. 

Each room is a work of art in itself. Soaring vaulted ceilings 

are the focal point of the master bedroom and the décor 

is kept soft and light. The breathtaking living room opens 

through triple french doors to a patio and views of the 

Cape Cod Sound.

Award-winning Landscape Architect Patricia Van Buskirk added Fieldstone stone walls capped 

with Bluestone into the land’s natural gradation, creating a much more functional tiered yard 

below the patio. The kitchen and screened porch both open to the patio area, creating a natural 

flow between indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. From the curved gravel driveway, you are 

greeted by hydrangeas and Summersweet, and rustic steps lead you to a circular shade garden.

The Tritter Feefer dining table has a gray wash finish. “The eye 

stops at anything dark; we wanted a beautiful sightline to the 

artwork in the living room,” Chiappone explains. The rounded 

Highland House chair backs echo the table’s sinuous legs and the 

swirls on the Hwang Bishop ceramic pendant light at the bar.

When the owners of this Chatham home saw a neighbor’s 

place down the street, they wasted no time asking for 

the name of their designer, hoping for a similar look. 

The designer, however, told them that each client gets a 

unique design. “We are mindful that each project takes 

on its own unique design elements respecting the client’s 

lifestyle,” says Jocelyn Chiappone, owner of Digs Design 

Company. 

The designer joined father and son duo, Ted Spencer and 

Matt Spencer of Spencer & Company, to create a forever 

home for the empty nester couple. “It started out as an 

expansion and remodel project. During demolition we 

encountered unforeseen issues with the foundation, so 

the team decided to start fresh with a new foundation,” 

Matt says. “We were able to use the original plans for the 

expansion, and worked directly with the clients to adapt 

things when necessary.” 

On the exterior, Thomas Mulcahy of Mulcahy Design 

Group reinforced the formal front façade with linear 

plantings of boxwoods and hydrangeas along retaining 

walls built from New England fieldstone. Out back, a 

series of terraces connect the deck off the first floor of the 

house to the main pool terrace, where glass rails & the 

infinity edge pool maximizes the view. “We came up with 

effective design solutions to complement the architecture 

& harmonize with the natural landscape,” Mulcahy says. 

Chiappone incorporated compelling architectural 

details throughout the interior of the classic shingled 

home. A gracious stair with a Chippendale-style fretwork 

balustrade, for instance, is the focal point of the entry 

and second-story landing. “The gain is dramatic,” Matt 

says. “It really changes the whole house.” Still, nothing is 

overdone. “The design is streamlined, but there’s a sense 

of excitement,” Chiappone asserts. 

Color and pattern play major roles in elevating the design. 

Rather than lean into a quintessential blue and white 

Cape Cod palette with nods to nautical motifs, Chiappone 

opts for a layered scheme that is both sophisticated and 

strategic. While the entry is light and airy, the adjacent 

office is rich and cozy thanks to deep teal built-ins and 

chinoiserie-style upholstery on the chairs. “This colorful 

and cozy space is the perfect “away” room for work and 

TV watching,” Chiappone says. 

The high gloss black bar in the dining room picks up on 

that cabinetry style, complete with arched glass-front 

upper cabinets that frame an attention-grabbing polished 

brass and glass shelf. “Rather than repeating a large wall 

of white cabinetry we chose high gloss black with brass 

accents,” Chiappone says. “It is a great wow moment 

when entertaining.” 


“We used large scale pieces with clean, open silhouettes,” 

Chiappone says of the living room furniture. In the office off 

the entry, the millwork is painted Benjamin Moore “Bermuda 

Turquoise” and the chair fabric is Scalamandre “Sea of Trees,” 

Chiappone says.

V-groove paneling adds interest to the kitchen ceiling. “We 

wanted to avoid a bowling alley effect in this large space,” 

Chiappone says. Opposite: Chiappone replaced a cased opening 

with a Moorish detail. “We call it the Turkish coffee bar,” she says.

to build a forever home that their family 

would enjoy for generations.

Polished brass accents inject glamour into the timeless 

white kitchen. The centerpiece is the La Cornue range, 

which Chiappone encouraged the clients to order in 

celadon. The cosmopolitan hue informed the celadon 

coffee bar tucked beyond a Moorish arch; another of 

the designer’s architectural flourishes. “We created a 

plywood template the width of the door frame that the 

Sheetrock is then built around,” Matt says in regards to 

the construction process. Jutras Woodworking crafted the 

cabinetry in both spaces, based on Chiappone’s design. 

The open concept plan flows beautifully. Mod black and 

white artwork by Liz Roache pulls the eye into the living 

room. Here, barely-there blues blossom into deeper, 

clearer shades of purple-blue with touches of celedon 

on the prints tie into the kitchen, and sandy wood tones 

and natural fibers reinforce the coastal locale. Chiappone 

mixes soft stripes and classic trellis patterns with a playful 

floral and a pared down, almost painterly embroidered 

drapes. “I don’t rely on go-to styles,” the designer says. 

“Fabrics are like fashion; I can’t wait for new collections to 

come out.” 

Chiappone delves deeper into color and pattern in the 

home’s private spaces. “Each bath tells its own story,” 

she says. The powder room on the main level is elegant, 

featuring a burlwood vanity and sisal wallpaper. The one 

in the basement, meanwhile, channels throwback-y camp 

vibes with orange life preserver wallpaper and a vintage 

rattan mirror. Upstairs, a bold guest bath plays with red,

white, and blue, showcasing a school of fish in the 

shower and an oversize pattern on the walls. “These 

pops of color appeal to the younger generations who 

visit,” Chiappone explains. “Laundry rooms are the new 

powder rooms!” 

The primary suite, however, is absolutely serene. 

For this bath, Chiappone curated a mix of modern 

and classic materials, including a terrazzo floor 

and a Calacatta marble countertop. The nuanced, 

monochromatic palette continues in the bedroom, from 

the chunky, fisherman sweater-like rug to the V-groovelined 

cathedral ceiling. Layers of tone-on-tone prints 

and textural, organic accessories enhance the sense of 

calm. “After the hustle and bustle of a busy day, they 

can walk in and sigh a big ah,” Chiappone says. “Then, 

in the morning, they can wake up, look out at the water, 

and pinch themselves.”

Defined by its reputation and longlasting 

relationships, McPhee 

Associates, a design/build firm on 

Cape Cod, has been an industry leader 

for years, honing their expertise and

At 25, founder Bob McPhee had a desire to build homes. 

After a few short years of building duplexes, he was able 

to move into spec homes, quickly amassing a portfolio that

“My preference for style was always a Cape with angles, 

roof breaks, large chimneys, anything to add what I thought 

was character,” says Bob. “I pounded nails during the day 

and worked on plans, estimates and proposals at night.” 

That hunger was evident to his growing family, particularly 

to his son, Rob, who runs the business today. “He was a 

hard worker, committed to the success of the business 

and taking care of his customers and family,” says Rob. 

Aware of the homes his father was building, and of the land 

development he had begun, Rob realized the importance 

of building good relationships, earning the trust of those

Evergreen screen plantings, a natural 

and organic palette, and casual flourishes 

create a calming, serene, and comfortable

Tucked away down a small and winding side road, a 

once heavily wooded site with an existing family home 

is transformed into a unique family property with a new 

house, guest house, and outdoor living spaces that 

harmoniously coexists with the rustic and coastal Nantucket 

Island surroundings. The result is a comfortable haven with 

a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor living 

spaces, custom designed and built by Polhemus Savery

From the outside, the home’s natural cedar trim and 

shingles that are weathering to silver gray, play into the 

calm and casual character of the property. A circular 

driveway gives a traditional touch to an otherwise nontraditional 

Nantucket home. “Although Nantucket is 

highly regulated and has specific guidelines about stylistic 

character, this house is not identical to any other house on 

Nantucket,” says John DaSilva, PSD’s Design Principal. “It 

is carefully crafted to this particular site and client.” 

One atypical feature is the shiplap paneling at the front, 

side, and back porches, that helps create effortless 

transitions from indoors to outdoors. “Every project we do 

is unique to each and every client and this one is certainly 

not an exception,” says Aaron Polhemus, owner & CEO of 

PSD. “It is cohesive within itself and also within the land.” 

Both PSD and interior designer Chris McGinty of CM 

Design have collaborated with the homeowners on other 

projects. With this particular project, the coastal modern 

interior is clean, airy, and bright, with an open floor plan. 

“The goal was for this space to feel organic and not over 

done,” says McGinty. 

With natural touches carefully incorporated throughout, 

such as lightly stained white oak floors that evoke imagery 

of beach sand and driftwood, McGinty brings the outside 

in for her clients on this project. Woven and linen light 

fixtures, a handmade driftwood coffee table, and a handpicked 

wood fireplace mantle create an indoor space 

that complements the beauty of the outdoor living areas 

and beyond. 

“Beyond the house, we had an opportunity to show the 

clients what is possible,” says PSD’s senior landscape 

architect Rob Calderaro. Mindfully placed screen 

plantings create a private enclave that extends behind 

the house. A cozy and inviting outdoor space featuring a 


granite fire pit and swimming pool is easily accessible from 

both the main house and the guest house. “When you 

have two structures and a pool, you really want to make 

it all harmonious; having access to everything should be 

seamless,” says Calderaro. 

The success of this project lends itself to the firm’s 

integrative and collaborative approach to the design and 

build process, as well as the trust established between 

the homeowners, interior designer, and the PSD team. 

“Working closely with a team that understands the whole 

process and what it takes really allows the project to be 

successful through each phase,” says Polhemus. 

The result: a seamlessly 

flowing, casual yet 

sophisticated oasis with 

ample privacy and comfort.

A multigenerational family vacation home in East 

Orleans, not far from Nauset Beach, offers a space 

for everyone.

On a two-acre property just off Main Street in East 

Orleans, not far from Nauset Beach, sits a stunning, 

multigenerational family vacation home. The stately, 

cedar-clad gambrel was designed by Architect Erik Tolley, 

principal of ERT Architects, in the stead of an older home 

that was in disrepair. 

While homes designed by ERT Architects often 

incorporate distinctive signature elements, they don’t 

necessarily have an instantly recognizable “look.” Tolley 

draws on his more than two decades of experience to 

create homes that are a unique reflection of his clients’ 

wishes, interpreted through his lens of creative expertise, 

while also remaining aesthetically in keeping with the 

neighborhood. For example, the gambrel roofline on this 

home is tripled for an updated and unexpected silhouette. 

Ornamental details on the exterior, such as the cornices 

and fish-scale shingles at each of the three peaks, are 

minimal yet draw attention to the distinctive profile. 

Tolley worked with Cape Cod custom home builder 

Mike Nardone, of MJ Nardone Building and Remodeling 

to make this home the masterpiece it is. Nardone has 

built a reputation as the premier builder on the Cape 

and beyond. He has a sharp eye for detail, years of 

experience, and can bring every client’s vision to life. 

Nardone frequently partners with ERT Architects and has 

an established symbiotic professional relationship with 

their team. This home is an exceptional example of their 

collaborative work. 

Inside, the common living spaces are spacious without 

feeling cavernous. Custom millwork adds depth and 

visual interest to nearly every space, the signature mark 

of every home designed by Erik Tolley. The primary living 

room boasts a coffered ceiling and a fireplace flanked 

by custom cabinetry. A small, intimate den has an accent 

wall finished with decorative millwork. In the kitchen, 

the oversized island is a main focal point, and gives the 

elongated room a sense of proportion. The stairway in 

the center hall is finished with an exquisite handrail and 

balusters, and a window seat fills a niche at the top of the 

stairs. A bunk room for the kids has a nautical feel, with its 

quartet of built-in beds. Tolley takes great care to exceed 

his clients’ expectations by taking into account the way 

the family lives and honoring that lifestyle with custom 

details. Because this family enjoys puzzles and games 

together as a tradition, Tolley ensured that there would be 

a designated puzzle room upstairs, and the basement was 

transformed into an impressive entertainment space.

quintessential blue-and-white scheme: classic navy and

lues of the matriarch’s favorite flower, the hydrangea. 

The massive kitchen island and china cabinet are painted 

a bold hydrangea blue, and pop against the snow-white 

cabinets and navy grasscloth-covered walls of the dining 

room beyond. Perini skillfully mixes high-end custom 

elements and budget-friendly options. For instance, the 

black granite countertops are one of the least expensive 

features in the room, yet they’re a perfect fit alongside the 

pricier details, like the blue tiled backsplash, which was 

handmade custom in Mexico. 

Overall, the vibe of the home is comfortable and serene, 

with playful splashes of color, especially in the kids’ bunk 

rooms. The bathrooms have a beachy, spa-like feeling, 

thanks to subtle details like wallpaper in a watery pattern, 

a rope-framed mirror and a shimmering tiled floor that 

ever so slightly resembles the shape of a whale’s tail. 

Bright, open and unstuffy, the home has space for four 

generations to gather, while also offering private moments 

of retreat. Indoor spaces flow effortlessly out to patio 

areas, inviting guests to enjoy dinner outside, or sunset 

by the fire pit. No detail is spared; nothing is over the top. 

This timeless home will serve generations to come and 

age perfectly in historic East Orleans. 

Designed for family living, the interiors are simultaneously 

spacious and cozy, with intimate spaces incorporated throughout. 

The coffered-ceilinged living room hosts multiple seating areas, 

while also gathering everyone around the central fireplace. 

The ship-like quadruple bunk room, no doubt a future location 

for flashlight stories and late-night giggles, will create special 

memories for generations to come. There will be no waiting for 

the sink, with a triple basin vanity perfect for sleepover mornings.
