Tiffany & Co. has launched<br />

a campaign about<br />

modern love featur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Beyoncé and Jay-Z with<br />

a Basquiat pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

a backdrop. The long-unseen<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g titled Equals Pi (1982) is<br />

meant to recall <strong>the</strong> luxury retailer’s<br />

signature shade of blue.<br />

The pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g features <strong>the</strong> artist’s<br />

recognizable skulls and scrawled<br />

text with phrases such as such<br />

as “AMORITE”, “TEN YEN” and<br />

“DUNCE”. Before appear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

new Tiffany campaign, <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was previously owned by two o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

jewelry moguls: Italian designers<br />

Alberto and Stefania Sabbad<strong>in</strong>i. It<br />

had been spotted <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong>ir Milan<br />

apartment, alongside o<strong>the</strong>r works<br />

1996 dur<strong>in</strong>g a So<strong>the</strong>by’s London<br />

Tiffany ad, Beyoncé wears an allblack<br />

diamond-studded Balma<strong>in</strong><br />

look that is <strong>in</strong>spired by Audrey<br />

Hepburn’s dress <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1961<br />

film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Jay-Z,<br />

meanwhile, dons clo<strong>the</strong>s <strong>in</strong>tended<br />

to mimic Basquiat’s outfit when he<br />

appeared on <strong>the</strong> cover of New York<br />

<strong>Magaz<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1985.<br />

The advertisement is part of a<br />

larger Tiffany campaign explor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

modern love. For <strong>the</strong> project,<br />

Beyoncé and Jay-Z collaborated<br />

with Emmanuel Adjei, a director<br />

who worked on Beyoncé’s visual<br />

album Black Is K<strong>in</strong>g, to produce a<br />
