Kaikoura to make asplash this summer<br />
Kaikoura is set to have its new<br />
community swimming pool open for<br />
summer.<br />
Finishing touches are being made<br />
ahead of the Kaikoura Aquatic Centre’s<br />
official opening on Sunday, November<br />
<strong>14</strong>, on the 5th anniversary on the<br />
devastating 2016 earthquake which<br />
destroyed the former community pool.<br />
The new aquatic centre is amodern<br />
facility catering to everyone from<br />
competitive swimmers, young people<br />
learning to swim, casual picnics with<br />
families and friends, as well as those<br />
who wish to gain better health through<br />
waterbased activities.<br />
It includes a25by12metre lap pool,<br />
a6mby10m multiuse learn to swim /<br />
hydrotherapy pool, abeach entry<br />
toddler pool, changing rooms,<br />
administration building and apicnic /<br />
barbecue area.<br />
The project has been managed by the<br />
Kaikoura Community Charitable Trust,<br />
with assistance from the Kaikoura<br />
District Council.<br />
‘‘It has been alot of work and many<br />
volunteer hours from everyone<br />
involved, and ahuge learning curve,’’<br />
says trust member John Diver.<br />
‘‘There will be afew nuts and bolts to<br />
sort out once we open, but we’re looking<br />
forward to the centre becoming ahub<br />
for the district over the hot summer<br />
months.<br />
‘‘Local youth will also benefit with the<br />
swimming club and Kiwi Swim holiday<br />
programme having access to apurposebuilt<br />
facility.’’<br />

Muir says the pool opening will be an<br />
exciting day for the Kaikoura<br />
community.<br />

learn fundamental water skills in a<br />
seaside community makes this a<br />
wonderful investment for future<br />
generations.<br />

Trust member Toni Batey has been<br />
active in the community fundraising<br />
and is working with local volunteers<br />
doing weed control and planting the<br />
area around the pool.<br />
Acall will be going out closer to the<br />
opening date for extra hands to help get<br />
the centre in tip top shape.<br />
‘‘While the build is almost complete<br />
we still have some work to do on the<br />
entrance way, setting up the<br />
administration building and the<br />
barbecue area,’’ Ms Batey says.<br />
Funding to build the Kaikoura<br />
Aquatic Centre included $1 million<br />
contributions from the Kaikoura<br />
District Council and the government’s<br />
Covid19 recovery fund. Large<br />
donations were received from the<br />
Department of Internal Affairs<br />
Lotteries Earthquake Recovery Fund,<br />
the Lottery Community Facilities Fund,<br />
the Rata Foundation and the Kaikoura<br />
Op Shop, with the balance coming from<br />
local fundraising.<br />
