HORTENSIA CHAIR: ANDRÉS REISINGER
Using CGI (computer-generated imagery)
Reisinger created a digital image of a chair
upholstered with pink petals. When he posted
it on Instagram, it soon went viral – and some
orders even came in. As a result, he decided
to work out whether he could actually make the
chair. With his team, he developed a series of
laser-cut polyester modules. Each module is
shaped like a hortensia petal. He subsequently
covered the chair upholstery with thousands
of these modules. In this way, a digital object
became a functional piece of furniture.
Welome, welcome, welcome, from the bottom of our hearts! It feels so good
to be able to say that again after almost two years. It will be absolutely brilliant
to see you again.
We’ve never looked forward to a fair with quite the same heady enthusiasm as
we’re feeling this year. There’s no doubt about it: we’ve missed one another! The
past period has shown us how essential the fair is for our sector. Buying and
selling furniture calls for real-life, personal contact. It’s not something you can
do hastily online. It’s a sensory, emotional and social event. It’s all about personto-person
contact, and physical contact with the pieces on offer. Furniture is
something that you need to see, feel, try out. It’s a question of ‘love at first sight’.
This is an important lesson that Covid-19 has taught us. We have all experienced
how important interiors have become to the consumer. Who could ever have
dreamt it? Suddenly interiors were centre stage again. Something that we have
to work hard at every day in normal circumstances is now happening of its own
accord. Turnovers are sky high! Unfortunately the euphoria was tempered by raw
materials shortages, prolonged delivery times and constantly changing price calculations.
We have all seen how enterprising our Belgian manufacturers are.
Time and time again, they’ve found solutions in response to consumer demand.
They’re offering a wealth of options for creating cosy places on the sofa and
cosy corners in the living space. These respond to the need for a sheltered, intimate
cocoon. The same trend has inspired the additional focus on free-standing
cabinets and multifunctional shelving units. Using these as room dividers also
help to separate living and working functions, which is absolutely essential for
work-life balance. They present pieces with a backstory, an intriguing or surprising
detail to explain, look at and pass on. Interiors are now ‘top-of-mind’ with
consumers. Let’s hold on to that moment!
We’re looking forward to SEEING you all again! See you in Brussels!
An appeal
for the
Reconnect & look forward
We continue to exhaust and waste natural resources, we continue to pollute our
environment, we disturb the balance of biodiversity and destroy natural habitats.
The Covid-19 virus, with a worldwide pandemic as a consequence, is one of the
many reactions to our actions, as are the extreme weather conditions resulting
from climate change.
Sustainability alone is no longer enough. We must come up with restorative and
regenerative solutions. Design must become a catalyst for lasting, sustainable,
environmentally-conscious thinking and action. Long-term thinking must take
centre stage: we need to design for future generations. We must now acknowledge
what went wrong and take responsibility for our future. Can we create a
legacy of which we can be proud? This is a gigantic task and responsibility for
designers. This appeal is a call to the furniture industry and trade to support
them in every possible way.
BRUSSELS FURNITURE FAIR
planet
The power of design
But let’s make this a positive story, because today the work of many designers,
artists and makers revolves around the circular economy and sustainability, for
example waste management, recycling and upcycling through interdisciplinary
collaborations, the encouragement of traditional crafts, the sharing of knowledge,
research, social participation and imagination. New, hopeful collaborations
are being forged between designers, knowledge institutions, organisations
and industry.
2 3
We must believe in the power of creativity to transform society. Money, governments
or science cannot solve complex global problems alone. We need fresh
ideas, alternative strategies and provocative thoughts. Whilst we work towards
a global circular economy, we must be aware of local challenges and opportunities.
We will also need to make better use of energy, becoming more efficient and
generating less waste. The pandemic and the lockdowns have made many of us
pause to consider the way we live, and an awareness has grown that things need
to be done differently.
1.
2.
‘Every little helps, but it
doesn’t solve everything.’
The world is changing, we’re seeing and hearing
that everywhere. The trade fairs in Milan and Paris
confirm this, albeit at a gradual pace. But it is clear
that we will have to get back in harmony with nature.
The big international brands are cautious and are
falling back on the familiar, on re-editions and
recognisable design. Fortunately, the young designers
have understood that it’s high time we started
caring for our planet.
1. COLLECTION 02: BURNT CORK
NOÉ DUCHAUFOUR-LAWRANCE
While moving to Portugal, Noé drove through
the dramatic fires of summer 2017. This visceral
experience resonated deeply. The second
collection of Made in Situ pays tribute to Portuguese
Cork, and is an ode to the resilience of
material, of people, of process. Each piece of
furniture contains and exhibits the marks of its
history. From calcined bark to fine grain, from
rawness to fluid curves evoking a caress, the
Burnt Cork collection plays with dichotomies.
Discarded burnt cork is transformed into custom
gradient blocks, then carved to reveal a
tactile & sculptural creation. This collection
is something of an anomaly, symbolic of the
phoenix rising from the ashes.
2. CHAIR
The tangible rigidity of the base of each of the 3
chairs morphs into curved shapes to welcome
the body. The first piece that Noé designed
was the Chaise Longue; this opened up the
path for the rest of the collection, evolving and
morphing first into the lounge chair and then
the chair.
Milan, back & forward
Under the influence of the pandemic our bedrooms became offices, our kitchens
schools, and our terraces or balconies the places where we wanted to make our
social engagement visible. In this hybrid environment, the private was increasingly
obliged to give way to the public, whilst many of the usual social functions
were actually suspended. Could we see the consequences of this in Milan or
Paris?
The trend towards smaller and more flexible living spaces has certainly been
rolled forward a year. We see large, comfortable sofas and chairs at the small
Supersalone in Milan. As a sign of ‘keep your distance’, but no doubt also to
achieve maximum peace and relaxation, whilst the design language is in fact
understated, as is the material use.
BE#16
The Supersalone indulged in
comfort and nostalgia
2.
The design refers to the roaring twenties, with warm colours and refined materials.
The colours are deep and saturated, with only light contrasts. The decorations
are geometric and the materials shine and are refined. There is a great
deal of marble, brass, marquetry in heavy wood and rich wallpaper. Everywhere,
allusions are being made to a stylish past. Is this tendency only visible in the big
Italian brands, as a precaution? Taking no risks in these times? There were no
large, expensive stands to be seen at the fair, but a reusable vertical wall, the
same for everyone.
With the new generation, it’s a different story. They have nothing to lose, because
material richness is not their goal. They are focused on the bigger picture.
Fortunately, alongside the uniform stands there was also The Maker Show with
experimental material innovations from small producers and sustainable startups,
and in The Lost Graduations Shows, recent graduates presented their projects
on radical sustainability.
We can certainly conclude that there is an impetus for change. Not yet in the big
brands, because there is no sense of urgency to be detected there. All kinds of
things are happening in the world – from climate change to urbanisation, not to
mention a huge health crisis with an enormous social impact – but the exhibitors
at the Supersalone are wallowing in comfort and nostalgia. Also in the city, the
fashion brands are causing a furore during the Fuorisalone, and seem to be the
only ones still investing in expensive large, imposing, irresponsible installations;
Hermès, Dior, Bulgari, Gucci…
Developed during the pandemic Kleiner’s
graduation project is the result of a personal
search for comfort in her lockdown life. The
project is a series of three products: a hot water
bottle, a sourdough starter container, and
a kit for growing plants. All three products require
water and work together as one system.
3. ARPER, KATA: ALTHERR DÉSILE PARK
Kata is designed with circular sustainability at
its core. Kata takes inspiration from artisanmade
wood and woven straw chairs and reimagines
the near universal typology using
contemporary, sustainable solutions.
4. CASSINA, SORIANA: AFRA & TOBIA SCARPA
The idea for this armchair that changed the
face of upholstered furniture belongs to Afra
and Tobia Scarpa, who designed it in 1969,
starting with the new possibilities offered by
the forming of polyurethane foam.
4. CITRUS PARADIS: REPULP
An eco-friendly material produced in France out of
waste from the citrus juice industry and other renewable
materials. Repulp is completely biobased
and recyclable and offers a valid alternative to petrochemical-based
materials. Repulp is later processed
in a workshop in Marseille with a combination
of handcraft and digital techniques resulting in
small series of 3D printed objects featuring unique
colours.
5. MYCÉLIUM, STUDIO PAYET & MIMO
In collaboration with Champiloop and the biolab
Nemeton, the studio created a table lamp made of
mycelium, a material which is available in large quantities
and easily accessible. This little known material
is becoming an alternative to cowhide and plastic.
6. ALGA DESIGN: SAMUEL TOMATIS
Tomatis created flexible materials made entirely of
algae, which he is developing with scientists. With
an appearance similar to leather or plastic, these
materials are biodegradable.
7. SCAU, GRANITO: ANNA SAINT PIERRE
Anna Saint Pierre’s in-situ recycling technique
called Granito has been adopted by SCAU, the
architecture firm for which she works. Granito –
or ‘in-situ’ quarrying – involves the recycling of
construction materials from building structures for
the renovation of those buildings.
France, responsible beauty
The Maison&Objet trade fair focused on a lifestyle that is in harmony with nature,
which makes use of technology to bring people together – sometimes virtually
– and which at the same time draws upon the traditional expertise of crafts
that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Paris Design Week focused on a completely different kind of design: sustainability
with a businesslike approach. All over the city, there were exhibitions about
new and renewable materials to visit. Talks were organised that triggered an
awareness of how we treat our planet.
Various exhibitions showcased projects by designers who are carrying out research
with recyclable and energy-efficient materials including seaweed, fungi
and shells. We are invited to reconsider our approach to beauty and we are encouraged
to seek it out in a frugal and sustainable way. Today’s ecological problems
leave us all with no choice but to consider how things are produced. Disposable
items, polluting products and non-sustainable production processes must
make way for more responsible solutions.
Fortunately we are seeing more
and more engagement with the
planet amongst the new designers.
It’s high time the manufacturers
followed suit.
An appeal for the planet
Alcova made an impression against the filmic backdrop of an abandoned barracks.
Many of the works presented balanced on the borderline between art,
materials research and spatial installations. It is these parts of the Milan Design
Week that have perhaps been most sorely missed this past year. Places for inspiration,
wonder and confusion. It’s like a quest for what still remains in a postindustrial
world in which climate change, rising sea levels, and the depletion of
raw materials and energy supplies has forced humans to change their lifestyles.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Many pieces of furniture had archetypical shapes and used earthy pre- or indeed
post-industrial materials such as steel, stoneware and wood; rough tables and
chairs that meet the basic requirements for our standard of living. But the message
is clear. The old familiar system of the furniture industry with designers
obliged to dance to the tune of manufacturers is a thing of the past. There will
be fewer objects in our living environment. The necessary utensils will therefore
also need to reflect this: they must be indestructible and made out of necessity.
It is in these kinds of unexpected places, in which design appears to be a bit-part
player, that new thoughts, ideas and surprising insights are born.
2. PROTOTYPE IV: MARC LESCHELIER
The work develops the notion of pre-architecture
which is an intermediate state where
architecture is materially unfinished and legally
undefined to both explore new vocabularies
and an alternative genre of architecture.
Prearchitecture is also a moment where
architecture is not yet a discipline but a wide
spectrum of physical, plastic and spatial relationships.
BRUSSELS FURNITURE FAIR
Atelier Luma in Arles (FR), led by the Belgian artistic director Jan Boelen, is a
great example of how this research into sustainable materials can be scaled up.
The workshop is deeply connected with its geographical and cultural surroundings:
the Camargue, the Alpilles and the Crau. This bioregion has a wealth of
natural resources and a diversity of knowledge which they identify, develop and
apply. Rice growing, mineral quarries, salt marshes, sheep farms and the historical
production of textiles and ceramics are all sources of inspiration for the
development of locally-rooted products.
The workshop has been designed as a place for research, and for creating and
sharing knowledge. It houses a multidisciplinary network: artists, biologists, engineers,
farmers, philosophers, sociologists and activists work together to find
and answer to the challenges of the transition. According to their approach, every
project is part of a more virtuous system.
5. SÉMIOPHORES: HORS-STUDIO
Hors-studio decided to work with shells and
sea shells, because restaurants produce a
great deal of sea waste. Making materials with
crushed sea shells and bio plastic is interesting
because it can flow back in the sea after
use as it will dissolve naturally.
6. PLÂTRE DE MER: LUCILE VIAUD
Sea plaster is made from shell waste, collected
and processed in Brittany (oysters, mussels,
sea snails, whelks, etc.). It is fully biodegradable
and available in as many colours as there
are species. The mineral from the shells is recognisable
in the texture and gentle fragrances.
7. GLAZ: LUCILE VIAUD
Glaz, from the old Breton word Glas, is the
name used for the nuance between the blue
and green of the Breton sea. Micro-algae
and shells colour the sea glass Glaz naturally.
Whilst the sea changes from blue to green
through the seasons, Glaz glass is also rich in
bubbles, cords and stripes which are present
in the material. In natural light, the reflections
transport us to the landscapes of the Breton
coast.
BE#16
And what is the situation in Belgium?
In Belgium we have Sep Verboom, who set up the Livable and ONTketen platforms.
As research and design platforms, they encourage post-industrial designers
to embrace culture and contemporary challenges. They collaborate with
for-profit and non-profit organisations and create alternative solutions for our
consumer society. Where profit is no longer evaluated in purely economic terms,
but in terms of the overall impact. But Sep is not alone. More and more Belgian
designers are collaborating on this sustainable story. This was also very clearly
apparent from the entries for the most recent Henry Vande Velde Awards. Our
new crop of designers is fully invested in the broader sustainable story.
BRUSSELS FURNITURE FAIR
With this last point, I would like to appeal to the Belgian furniture sector to help
support initiatives of this kind by applying the results of their research projects,
so that upscaling can take place. This is absolutely essential for the wellbeing of
future generations. /
ELIAS VAN ORSHAGEN - POST PANDEMIC LOVE SEAT
The interior
With the Post Pandemic Love Seat, Elias van
Orshagen is making a poetic statement. On
this bench, you inevitably slide very close together.
The seat is fashioned from a curved alu-
10 11
minium sheet, which is – not by accident – 150
(r)evolution
cm long. What powerful symbolism! This bench
runs contrary to all social distancing. It represents
the post-Covid era in which close contact
is allowed again.
CIRCULAR PANELS
As part of the ONTketen project, a transdisciplinary
team – the cleantech start-up Circular
Matters, design platform Livable and the social
economy enterprise Pro Natura – is joining
forces to tackle social problems such as
increasingly scarce raw materials, climate
change and social inequality.
This is a time to NEVER forget. The coronavirus
pandemic will enter into the history books as
a turning point in the interior world. Some
changes happen gradually, whilst others take
place at lightning speed. Some consequences
are thoroughly positive, whilst others cause
us to stop and think.
BE#16
Priorities
All of a sudden, the buzz phrase was
‘stay safe’. Followed by the urgent instruction:
‘stay at home’. From one day
to the next, our world looked totally different.
The place to be was AT HOME.
Holidays became staycations. The car
was no longer a holy cow. Business
outfits were consigned to our wardrobes,
leisurewear (or worse) was fine
for around the house. Something was
set in train that for ages had seemed
unimaginable: the interior rose on consumers’
list of priorities and gloriously
overtook its perennial competitors.
Old-fashioned worldly wisdom are
proving to be not so crazy after all.
The expression ‘domestic bliss’ has
lost its derogatory connotations. There
turns out to be a grain of truth in it after all. When push comes to shove, your
life is about your home, your street, your local area, your own country… Living
and working, consuming and producing have all been changed by the coronavirus
era. What is the impact of the pandemic on our interior world?
To begin with, furnishing a permanent homeworking space/room. What initially
appeared to be a temporary emergency measure is most likely here to stay. Hybrid
working will become the norm, with our time split between the home and
the office.
The provisional workstation at the kitchen table, in the bedroom or in amongst
the washing is no longer tenable. There will have to be a more professional,
separate work bubble. Firstly because of the need to concentrate, be efficient,
businesslike. Video calls with screaming children and crashing pans in the background?
Having a confidential business discussion whilst everyone can listen
in? This does not look very professional. Secondly because of work-life balance,
which comes under greater pressure when you’re working from home. Of course,
the ideal solution is to have a separate workspace in the house or in the garden.
Then once your work is done you can literally shut the door behind you. Naturally,
this isn’t possible for everyone. Then it’s a case of being able to screen off
your workspace, out of sight and out of earshot of your family members. (The
Zoom and Teams gaffes from the early days now come across as anything but
professional.) A permanent workspace is becoming as established a norm in our
interiors as a table, sofa and bed. Acoustic folding screens and room dividers help
to preserve a dividing line between home working and private life.
MATHIAS DE FERM – LITTER SITO, MIACARA
Pet design
The interior (r)evolution
Large companies might consider the hub & spokes model. The head office (hub)
in a big city, and satellite sites (spokes) in smaller towns, closer to where staff
and/or customers live.
In any case, the evolution towards hybrid, decentralised working has been accelerated
by the pandemic.
Social distancing? Emotional contact!
The pandemic has also intensified the emotional and mental dimension of the
interior. Social distancing has made us aware of our need for physical and affective
contact. The lockdown (temporarily) moved our social lives to our homes.
On the one hand, the TV was turned off, because boardgames were rediscovered.
On the other hand, streaming became incredibly popular as it allowed us to
watch films together for hours on end. In any case, family sofas are more important
than ever in the interior, as islands in which to cosy up together. Everyone
relaxing, chilling out on the sofa and binge watching. The XXL-sized lounge element
has been upgraded into the cuddle corner. Lying stretched out on the sofa
was always something we wanted to do, but has now become a part of balanced
homeworking too. Here you can take a power nap, something that’s far from
self-evident in the office.
The pandemic has led to a run on pets.
Dogs, cats and other pets were purchased
at a rate of knots. For cosiness, for cuddles,
(Home)working? Space and balance!
for obligatory walks around the block?
The fact is that animal shelters were totally
12 empty. An animal of this kind claims its
13
place in the family and in the interior. Just
think of all the equipment required, such as
feeding bowls, baskets, cages and cat litter
trays, and an extra rug on the sofa or bed.
Sito is a design toilet for your cat and an
extra seat for its ‘staff’. This litter tray can
stand proud in your interior. It’s also designed
to be easy to clean out: the litter sits
in a disposable cardboard box. Sito is made
of powder-coated aluminium.
Ergonomically furnished
The Workspace One is a compact and comfortable
workspace, hidden away in a sleek
console table. Fold open the lid and an ergonomically
At the same time, homeworking is having an impact on office design. Work is
done at home, whilst meetings, brainstorming sessions and socialising with colleagues
ideally take place in the office. A Zoom of Teams meeting is a pale substitute
for these. Big landscape offices are a thing of the past. There are now
fewer fixed workspaces and more open spaces. The lounge setting is designed for
contact with colleagues and teambuilding, as home working threatens to destroy
the social cohesion within a company. Dotted around are flexible spaces and
screened-off concentration and meeting bubbles. Just like at home, it’s sometimes
important to shut yourself off from your environment, the comings and
goings and background noise.
Birds’ feathers
Maarten De Ceulaer had always been fascinated
by birds. This ultimately inspired
him to create the Feathers rugs: sophisticated,
expressive collages of feathers. He
seeks out and scans the feathers, often
from different birds, before editing and abstracting
them. Their shapes, colours and
textures are arranged into surprising collages.
These are executed as hand-knotted
carpets in wool and silk from the Himalayas.
In addition to the standard circular and rectangular
Because of the pandemic, houseplants took on an additional significance. The
botanical interior trend has proved to be essential for your health. Walking in
the open air, ideally in nature, has been rediscovered. It’s so good for us! This
experience is being taken back into the home, as it were. Plants create life, peace
and routine. Plants are good for the interior climate, some have air-cleansing
properties. Caring for and taking cuttings from plants creates those all-important
zen moments. More than ever, nature appears as a source of inspiration in
the interior. This translates into organic shapes, purer materials, and more room
Online boost
The lockdown has given a boost to online shopping. Consumers took to it en
masse. They discovered how easy it was to buy with a single touch of a button. At
the same time, they became aware of how much they missed the physical shopping
experience. Especially at interior design shops, they want to see, feel, and
try out their (bigger) purchases. Shopping by appointment makes the customer
feel like royalty, plus perhaps prompting a sense of obligation to buy. Recreational
shopping was wiped off the map. Wandering around an interior design shop is
worlds apart from peering at a screen. In the meantime, consumers have become
more familiar with the virtual realm. Configuring sofas and cabinets online is a
game. Augmented Reality makes it even more fun. They are accustomed to QR
codes.
For interior retailers and manufacturers, these developments have profound,
sometimes far-reaching consequences. Physical shops opened a webshop. Manufacturers
have been playing online catch-up: their websites have been rigorously
overhauled, their photography made more stylish, and their social media activities
professionalised. These online developments were in the air and have been
hastened by the pandemic. How do you keep up as a business with the onlinesavvy
consumer?
There’s also a less ideal side to online shopping: its impact on the environment
(all that packaging and all those delivery vans) and on spatial planning. All hot
issues.
BRAM KERKHOFS – MEANDER
Regional awareness
The pandemic has exposed a number of sticking points. The recent natural disasters,
the undeniable issue of climate change, and raw materials shortages have
acted as a catalyst.
Consumers were confronted with the overseas origin of products and the less
pleasant attendant consequences. Surely this provides food for thought? Then
you’re better off buying locally/regionally/European. Manufacturers experienced
the less pleasant sides of globalisation and outsourcing. They tried to solve things
in-house and to draw upon regional (European) resources.
These issues set in train a change in mentality. How quickly will this lead to a
drastic shift in behaviour? Time will tell. /
Endlessly elastic
Meander is a continuous research project to
single-handedly assemble semi-transparent
screens. The design concept combines elastic
ropes/bands with a stable material, in this case
a stainless steel plate. With this you can literally
put together all imaginable constructions and
shapes.
You have the choice of round elastics of between
3 and 10 cm in diameter, and flat elastic
bands of between 5 and 60 mm wide. You
clamp these in between the profiles in the
stainless steel plate (see photo). You can vary
both the format of the elastic and the gaps
between it. In this way you can create your
semi-transparent screens in the most fabulous
shapes. Straight, round, undulating and pretty
much anything you can come up with. The potential
applications are endless. From room divider
to cabinet carcass to façade cladding. In
this case, ‘screen’ is a highly elastic concept.
Neyt saw a great opportunity: homeworking
calls for homeworking spaces. The kitchen
table is fine for a while, but not for months, or
who knows, for evermore. One person might
have a lost corner to retreat to, whilst another
might have enough living space to free up a
whole room. In between these two extremes is
a range of homeworking situations. To respond
to this, Neyt has a brought out diversified range
of homeworking furniture.
The Home Desk is the most elementary solution:
a basic desk measuring 120 x 63 cm
complete with drawer unit. The Home Office
is a compact workspace: the desk plus a high
bookcase take up just 130 x 72 cm of floorspace.
Both home office solutions are available
in ‘royal oak’ and ‘textured white’.
The ultimate solution is Capo: a modular office
range with the allure of a professional office.
The desk is available in three sizes: 150, 170
and 200 cm long by 80 cm deep. If you slide
the low sideboard beneath it, you get a corner
solution that calls to mind an executive desk.
The cabinets are available in two widths and
two heights. Capo in ‘golden oak’ emanates a
warm, homely vibe. The combination of light
chestnut with black looks more businesslike.
Given their intensive use, all homeworking
pieces are finished in scratch-resistant melamine.
What’s more, all desks allow you to
choose your work direction yourself. The supports
and drawer units can be slotted beneath
the top either to the left or right.

100% circular
The Revor Circular mattress is indeed 100%
circular. The Niaga ® label proves it. This pocket
spring mattress is made of just two circular
20 mono materials: polyester and steel. These
21
can easily be separated from one another and
endlessly reused – without any loss of quality
or the addition of other ingredients.
Polyester is the material of which PET bottles
are made, among other things. This is also the
raw material for the zips and all textile yarns
for the mattress cover, the 3D comfort layer
and the pockets around the springs. The latter
are made of remelted steel. The highpoint
of the circular concept is the ‘click-unclick’
polyester resin from Niaga ® : when heated this
detaches fully. This allows the mattress to be
easily dismantled and separated into two material
streams. The mattress goes into the
oven, the glue detaches and the materials are
recuperated for reuse. The polyester and steel
are melted down to produce raw materials for
a new Circular mattress. So no raw material is
lost!
The finesse of the Circular mattress is the
Niaga ® label with the QR-code. This links to
the product passport with detailed information
about the materials used. There are also
instructions here about how and where the
consumer can hand in their Circular mattress.
This completes the circle: the old mattress becomes
a new mattress.
Natural sleep
Where is the time that you would sleep on a
sack of straw, sitting upright in a bedstead? The
only materials to hand at that point were natural
ones. Polypreen harks back to that past time,
in combination with today’s science. The Ecosy
concept starts from the principle of ‘sleeping
on natural materials’ without toxic substances,
just like in days of yore. Of course, the sleeping
comfort has now been improved, both ergonomically
and in terms of quality, with comfort
layers and zones, amongst other things. Both
Ecosy mattresses are composed of 100% reusable
raw materials. The Naturall mattress has
a core of 100% natural latex and an intermediate
layer of coconut. The Greenwave version
is built up of Calico ® pocket springs in cotton
bags, and the Pulse covering layer is also made
of 100% natural latex. The mattress covers are
a natural double cloth weave of viscose with
Belgian linen.
The mattress collection has been supplemented
by a solid wood cot plus a box with wooden
headboard. This makes Ecosy a natural sleep
concept.
TOON DE SOMER – TON SUR TOOON, DESIGN: MATHIAS DE FERM
Several sides
A naturalistic boulder shape.
Ton sur Tooon is a nod to ‘ton sur ton’: the concept
revolves around nuances. Having an eye
for nuances, introducing nuances. What happens
when you look at something from a different
angle, introduce a slight twist, change the
material?
Kicking off the concept was the oval room divider:
an architecture of oval wooden planks
and metal uprights in a rounded L-shape. The
latter create distinct, asymmetric impressions.
On one side, your gaze meets a closed surface;
whilst on the other you are looking into an open
compartment.
The planks are available in lengths of between
100 and 400 cm, whilst the uprights are always
35 cm tall. The empty space in the upright can
be used for books, as a wine rack, or to showcase
other items. The open space between
the two uprights can be filled with cabinet elements
and drawer units. Do you have two room
dividers? You can connect these with a clothes
rail to make a wardrobe.
The next step was the Ton-sur-Tooon table,
set on legs in the same rounded L-shape. The
organically shaped tabletop is a naturalistic
copy of a real boulder. The circumference of the
stone has been enlarged to create a tabletop
measuring 237 x 193 cm, spacious enough to
seat 8 to 10. The smaller alternative measures
177 by 132 cm. One thing is absolutely certain;
the boulder shape is unique.
The tabletop is available in veneer, lacquered
and cemented using a Swiss process. The
aqua concrete is applied by hand in 3 layers,
before being sanded and primed. The drying
time in between these takes a week. The aqua
concrete is itself water and grease-resistant. In
spite of this, it is still finished with a transparent,
two component boat varnish.
In parallel to this exclusive model, a light version
has been launched. In this case, the tabletop
is simply geometric and laminated.
In short, Ton sur Tooon has been crystalised
into an all-round and diversified concept, suitable
for the home and contract markets, and for
big and small budgets.
Ideal ellipse
Practically round
The ellipse form has a special place amongst
oval tables. It is the dimensions that determine
whether the table is practical to use. That’s why
Perfecta has opted for 120 cm wide x 240 cm
long as the ideal size. The space around and
on top of the table can be utilised to the full.
There’s no need to offer up seating space in
order to be able to comfortably eat, work and
socialise. And the opposite is also true.
PERFECTA – VENETO & BAR-ALLURE
The chairs Aero and Allure appear to be identical.
The oval seat is combined with an arched
arm and backrest. Two metal U-shaped profiles
(tube diameter 16 mm) are the stylistic element
that both connects and divides them. These
cause the arm and back rest to almost float
above the seat – typical of the design style of
the 1980s. The relatively thick upholstery and
high back lift up the seating comfort to armchair
level.
The seat is as soft as the base is sleek. The
metal feet and brackets are available in a
choice of 16 epoxy colours, including copper,
stainless steel and aluminium shades. The dif-
ference between the two chairs? Allure has a
swivel seat and is available in a bar stool version.
Aero is only available as a dining room
chair with a fixed seat. In parallel to these
chairs, Perfecta has included a wider selection
of circular tables.
The round Veneto and Wacko tables are available
in three formats: a diameter of 120 cm, 140
cm and 160 cm, suitable for seating four, six
and eight people respectively. The maximum
of 160 cm is partly for logistical reasons: this is
the maximum reach of two widely outstretched
arms. So all the round tabletops can be lifted up
Wave alludes to the rippling lines of its backrests.
With every element, the back cushion
leans against a gently curving shell. Seen from
the back, all these backs form a wave-shaped
movement. At least, they do when they are all
set in the same position.
ROM – WAVE
In a single fluid motion, you can tilt and slide
Naturally, this model is also available according
Dotted line continuation
Izola plays with geometric volumes and spatial effects. Sleek planes can be transformed
using recesses and metal structures into a lighter and more airy composition.
The cabinets range from compact (1 door) to large (4 doors). The sideboard can be
configured to include a single recessed compartment. If desired you can accentuate
this open area with a ceramic inset in ‘marble look’, with a choice of
‘diamond cream’ or ‘noir désir’.
The quintessential thing about Izola is the metal rack with its filagree structure and
refined 13 mm-thick planks. This is half supported by the cabinet and elongates
the sideboard with an open grid structure. The straight line is continued as a dotted
line.
The metal of the rack reappears in the base beneath the cabinets. Other options
are to have the cabinets on a plinth or mounted on the wall. In terms of finish, Izola
offers a choice of 5 shades: natural, white, grey, dark and black brushed oak.
Alternative creative
Achi is the affordable alternative derived from a
high-end design concept. You sit on a flat bed
with loose backrests and bolster cushions. The
idea is inspired by the traditional Eastern sitting
culture. In this Westernised design version, the
pile of cushions is reduced to a minimum and
transformed into a pair of freestanding back
modules. These can robustly withstand body
pressure. An integrated metal construction
in the cushion block transforms the pressure
against the back support into a downward force
on the seat. The anti-slip profile on the underside
and the bouclé material ensure additional
stability. The back cushions are guaranteed to
remain stable, without falling over or slipping.
The concept offers unlimited freedom to sit
how and where you want to. Side by side, face
to face, back to back. Close together, at a distance,
with your gaze trained indoors or out. You
can use Achi as a sofa bed, and for your power
nap while working from home. Your creativity is
has existed since August 2021. In the workshop
you can see epoxy tables being created.
Each tabletop is unique: the product of traditional
craftsmanship, weeks of superhuman
patience, the creative spirit and the meticulous
eye of a former optician.
The name ‘Odysseedesign’ alludes to the long,
hard road that must be travelled in order to realise
a dream. It is unsurprising that the switch from
spectacle frames to epoxy tabletops would have
its ups-and-downs. Wouter Schmitz witnessed
the disappearance of craftsmanship from the
optician’s field, and with it the challenge of working
on frames. The time to make a change was
now or never. During this period of reflection, he
discovered epoxy. The tradition and authenticity
of the process proved to be decisive. He began
experimenting to his heart’s content with the
artificial resin, the chemical reactions, the environmental
factors, the curing temperatures and
times, dyes, and so on. He has now developed
into a self-made epoxy artist.
Every tabletop is carefully built up layer by layer,
with the necessary hardening time in between.
This can often take from between 7 to 10 days
per layer. Although the high pressure chamber
is incredibly sterile, Wouter still spends between
3 and 4 hours with a magnifying glass and toothpick
removing tiny pieces of dust that have settled.
In this you recognise the eye of the skilled
optician, the precision work down to one hundredth
of a millimetre. This means that casting
an epoxy tabletop is a process that takes weeks!

LEDA COLLECTION – SKY
Tailor-made evolution
Leda is taking a further step from classic towards
timeless. Sky is a cubist modular sofa
with loose lumbar cushions for both decorative
effect and ergonomic comfort. But don’t
be confused by the modules: these do not
work with a limited number of standard sizes.
In line with the company’s DNA, Sky too is
authentically tailor-made in Belgium: made to
measure, according to the customer’s wishes.
Right down to the last centimetre, as it were.
The seating comfort is wholly up to date, with
a high-grade foam filling in the seat. The fabric
collection is in continuous development
throughout the year. Has an interesting fabric
been discovered? Leda will immediately incorporate
it into its collection. Here you have a free
choice of upholstery for both the sofas and the
chairs. Will you opt for a homogonous or heterogenous
interior setting?
Ten years of Cuarto reflects the history of interior cabinets.
The purist design was inspired by the sixties, as
was the period of the wall-mounted cabinets. In 2011
Cuarto was focused on stand-alone cabinets ‘to be
positioned on the floor or on the wall’. In 2021 there
has been an evolution towards living room units, partly
thanks to the arrival of broadband TV. For that reason,
Michel Denolf has expanded made-to-measure from
smaller to room-wide walls of cabinets. Cuarto has
proved itself as a timeless, purist, design.

The Orange collection translates the classic
country estate style into a sleeker, urban
design. The oak is a refreshingly light colour.
With the cabinets, you can make a statement
in your interior. The dresser can be extra high
(111 cm) and wide. The standard height is 90
cm, and the three width options range from
145 to 250 cm. The multifunctional wall cabinets
are a compilation of stand-alone pieces including
a dresser, a glass-fronted cabinet and a tall
cabinet. You can opt for a relatively compact
setup (196 cm) or a monumental setup (249 cm).
The continuous plinth and cornice smartly delineate
the cabinets.
The Orange tables range from 164 to 290 cm
long. With your choice of support you can define
your style: a sleek block leg, a classic monastery-style
leg or a rural cross leg.
Sideways glance
Dunes is the first collection from &dez: a label
for liveable and affordable design aimed at a
trend-aware audience. Interior trends have
been filtered down into a trend theme.
For the 2021 season, the theme was ‘Dreaming
in the dunes’. For 2022 it is ‘Secret life in the
garden’: a fairy-tale ‘back-to nature’ ambiance.
The changing landscapes, the quirks of nature
and the refreshing breeze are reflected in airilyconstructed
pieces with a mysterious perspective.
The Dunes cabinets have an open base
and are set on a high metal frame. Depending
upon where you stand, your perspective of the
cabinets changes. The solid wood fronts have
a semi-open structure, with vertical louvres positioned
oblique to the frame. This means you
can only peak inside from a certain angle. If you
are standing in a different position, then the
contents of the cabinets remain a secret. This
sets Dunes apart from other cabinets of this
kind. In the TV cabinet, the hinged door on the
right is combined with a sliding door on the left.
Lightweight
The light Castella wood finish and the dark slate create
a ‘back to nature’ vibe. Metal feet and robust handles
add an industrial accent. The table support is available
in three alternatives: a U-shaped, X-shaped or an A-
shaped model. Vintage-style chairs with velvet seats
make the dining table complete.
But Viareggio has even more up its sleeve. To begin
with, its 5-cm thick doors are lightweight, as they are
constructed from hollow-core panels. What’s more, the
cabinets are delivered fully assembled.
EVAN – PERUGIA
Planks and ridges
Perugia starts with traditional ‘broad oak parquet
The matt black edges outline the contours of
planks’ in melamine. The handleless door the cabinets and (optionally) the tabletops. It is
fronts are fashioned from ribbed MDF with a as if an iron band has been forged around the
matt black lacquer. This solution is both pragmatic
panels and tops. Perugia is an all-round furni-
and trendy: you leave almost no fingerture
range which includes an extensive table
84
prints on ribbed doors, and the corrugated look concept. This features four round (Ø 90 - 150
chimes with the industrial style.
cm) and four oval (163 - 260 cm) sizes, amongst
85
others, plus the requisite support options.
Loft or barn doors?
LIEVENS – DAKOTA
The Dakota range charts a middle course between the industrial
and country styles. With its striking sliding door, you can go either
way. Is it a loft door, or more of a barn door? Does it allude to the
dynamism of the big city, or the peace of the countryside? In any
case, this one sliding door sets the tone for the cabinets. Will you
keep the left or right-hand side of the cabinet open?
The whole construction, perfectly illuminated, is in full sight. The focus
lies on the authentic steel rail and mounted steel hangers. The
sliding door fits with the style, and is constructed from wide, socalled
‘French oak’ planks (an Ecolux ® decor). Conversely, the customary
metal accents are kept fairly modest. There is some suggestive
matt black on a few cabinet planks here, a few drawer fronts
there. And beneath the table, on the angled edges of the cross foot.
A different era
Melinda represents a neo-classical style. Take in the
bulbous table leg, the profiled cornice panel on the
dresser, and the espagnolette closing mechanism on
the doors. The matt black finish adds a fashionable
twist.
The collection is made of gamber, a relatively unknown
tropical wood. The panels in the doors are reproduced
in MDF. Melinda offers an entire arsenal of cabinets and
tables with which to complete your interior.
The Dakota is finished entirely in Ecolux ® , including the cabinet interiors.
The rear of a cabinet door, the inside of a drawer, the underside
of a plank: everything is laminated to a high quality on all sides.
Only the table legs are 100% solid oak, providing excellent impact
resistance and stability.
BE#16
From B to A: the Velda Sleep Moods
The new consumer has prompted Velda to review
its historical B2B strategy as a production
company. The focus now lies on this consumer:
a B2C strategy with – why not – positioning
as an A-brand. This is not something that Velda
has dreamt up overnight. On the contrary,
it has been underpinned by thorough research
amongst customers and sleep consumers.
The new consumer walks into a shop well prepared.
They have oriented themselves and
gleaned information from the internet, and believe
they know exactly what they want. This
changes the entire sales process, as well as
the marketing and communication flow. The
consumer takes centre stage! They must be
aware of the Velda collection.
the sleep consumers. Velda has defined four
Sleepstyle Moods. ‘Essential’ stands for the
basic, timeless mood. This consumer simply
wants high-quality sleeping comfort for a keen
price. No more, no less. ‘Icon’ stands for the
stylish, Instagrammable mood. This consumer
wants to make a statement: see my design bed
and state-of-the art sleeping comfort. They get
a kick from more unique fabrics and colours.
Models such as Fly, Versus and Focus are
made for them! ‘Sense’ stands for the peaceful
Zen mood. This consumer is highly focused
on their health: ultimate wellbeing. They greatly
value ergonomically responsible sleeping comfort
and a ‘pure’ night’s sleep. Finally, ‘Omni’, the
super-de-luxe hospitality mood. This consumer
opts for high-end design and ditto sleeping
comfort. They will undoubtedly choose the Finesse
bed or Classic box spring.
This implies the switch from a B2B to a B2C
strategy. The key question is: who are the
sleep consumers? What do they want? What The new vision has a wide-reaching impact
In the majority, the zero gravity position is simply
options are the massage function and – a
recent addition – the stand-assist function.
With Modulax ® , Medalounger has seriously
burnished the image of its recliner armchairs.
The ‘Poseidon’ model, with its curved wooden
side panels is a nod to the legendary Eames
thanks to the vertical ‘Cadillac’ channels in the
App records your sleeping profile, analyses your night’s sleep and
brings critical points to your attention. It can even adjust your sleeping
position.
BRUSSELS FURNITURE FAIR
You can link each individual box spring to your personal, voice-controlled
Sleep Assist App. You can consult it in real time and per night/
week/month. It records all your sleep-related data including your heart
rate, breathing, snoring, movements, and the number of hours you
have slept. Measurement is the key to knowledge. Perhaps you sleep
more or less restfully, or shorter/longer than you think. Is your heart rate
a cause for concern? It will then advise you to consult your doctor. Do
you snore? Then it automatically raises up the head end to a 7° angle.
It detects your snoring through vibrations.
The Ergosleep ® App is every bit as personal as your
Ergosleepv bed. It works like a personal assistant to
improve your night’s sleep.
To begin with, it registers your relevant personal details,
your SLEEP DNA ® -data, plus the individual specifications
of your bed, such as the ergonomic configuration
of your base and mattress. The app also contains the
general product information such as the type, composition
and height of your mattress, plus use and maintenance
instructions. So you always have these details
to hand. As an additional service, your app can also
send you tips and alerts. For example, it warns you that
it’s time to turn your mattress again. This function is entirely
optional, so you’ll need to (de)activate it yourself.
You can also set up the app to use as a remote control
for your bed.
Out of Love: for THE SMART CONSUMER
The Sleep Assist App brings out a report on your sleep score: what is
good, what can be improved? On the basis of this, it offers tips to optimise
the quality of your night’s sleep.
REVOR – SLEEPLINK
An extra tool is the Ergosleep® tracker (sold separately).
You place the band of the sensor beneath the sheet,
horizontally across your mattress. This synchronises
with the app using Bluetooth. It records and analyses
your sleeping pattern, translates it into a sleep score
and advises you on areas for improvement. It measures
the time you spend in bed, how long you lie awake, how
many hours you have slept, lightly or deeply. How were
your heartbeat and breathing? So you’ll always have
sleep-related data to hand. The app allows you to adjust
your sleeping behaviour and thus improve your sleep
quality.
