An online competition where everyone wins - was the motto of this

year's Arbona Win-Win Competition, which aimed to provide students

and companies the opportunity to get to know at least part of

what digital marketing allows. It is a competition for the best marketing

campaign to which more than 300 students applied, and

among them was a large number of students from the Faculty of

Economics & Business in Zagreb, whose interest pleasantly surprised

the organizers.

Students created campaigns for 65 out of 240 registered companies,

and the best 65 teams had the opportunity to conduct a created

campaign with a real budget and win the main prize of HRK

5,000.00. Students thus had the opportunity to learn and experience

the entire process of creating a digital campaign, from the idea to

the presentation of the results to the company. Through workshops

with expert guidance, they also had the opportunity to learn the

little secrets of the great masters of Google Ads that they applied in

their campaigns. The best campaigns went into the implementation

phase with Arbona's budget of HRK 500.00 per campaign and

showed what they learned about the dynamic world of digital marketing.

At the very end of the competition, the three final teams, according

to Arbona's expert jury and the company rating, presented their

campaigns, showing the acquired knowledge and effort, and the first

place was won by FEBZG students Sara Drešar, Ivana Kontin, Bruno

Kruljac, and Petra Merle.

You can find more about the competition on Arbona's Win-Win blog

At the World University Debate Championship held online from July

6 to 14, 2021, Zagreb students once again achieved historic success.

Lovro Šprem from the Faculty of Economics & Business and Tin

Puljić from the Faculty of Political Science became world champions,

which makes them the first champions in history for whom English

is not their mother tongue and were individually declared the first

and second debaters in the world.

In a competition attended by over 400 teams from around the world,

Lovro and Tin defeated opponents from prestigious institutions such

as Harvard, Standford, Oxford, and Cambridge. Among other things,

they have discussed such issues as South Korea's geopolitical relations,

Amazon's and Uber's business models, police strategies to

prevent organized crime, rules that should exist on social media, and

many other complex issues. Deep and demanding topics of discussion,

with only 15 minutes of preparation for each topic and a randomly

assigned side with which the debaters do not necessarily

agree on a personal level made debate an intellectually extremely

demanding discipline.

became champions in the category English as a Second Language

and European vice-champions in the open category.

Lovro Šprem and Tin Puljić are proud of their success, but also of the

success of the younger debaters who have also achieved notable

success and for whom they have been mentors. Most of all, they

hope that the success of all Zagreb debates could pave the way for

the further development of the university debate in Croatia, which

will bring to greater attention and consequently funding so that it

becomes available to all who want to deal with it.

Tin and Lovro have had several successes before - in 2019 they were

world vice-champions at the World Championships in Cape Town,

and later that year at the European Championships in Athens they

Catholic scientific conference opened to the public in which the

social doctrine of the Catholic Church is promoted and represented.

In the 2nd session in 1937 on the topic "Family in Today's

Society", Dr. Eugen Sladović gave a prominent lecture

"Family and the State" in which he deals from legal and social

point-of-view with the interaction and position of the family

and the state in the state systems of that time. In doing so, he

emphatically criticizes the population policy and attitude of the

state towards the family in fascist Italy, corporatist Austria, National

Socialist Germany (with special reference to racial laws),

and Bolshevik Russia (with emphasis on marriage law as the basis

for creating a family). This lecture (published in Proceedings of

the conference - listed above) later earned him the label of a

“clericalist” and was a probable reason for his removal from SEC

and the University after WWII.

As the secretary of the section of the “Association of University

Teachers” (of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) in Zagreb, Dr. Sladović

in 1939, after the founding of the Banovina of Croatia, took part

des unabhängigen Staates Kroatien. Tübingen:

Archiv des öffentlichen Rechts, Vol. 72 (N.F. 33), No. 2/3 (1943)

In the second half of the 1930s, Dr. Sladović, with Dr. Milan

Ivšić, Dr. Juraj Šćetinac, and Dr. Edo Lovrić, Rector of the University

of Zagreb, and under the auspices of the Archbishop of

Zagreb Dr. Antun Bauer, organized the Croatian Social Week, a

in the transformation into the "Croatian Society of University

Professors", of which he was the first secretary.

At the time of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), he was

considered a leading constitutional expert writer… on topics related

to the structure of the state and society, while like many Catholic

intellectuals… he clearly rejected fascism and National Socialism,

and legally defined the NDH as an "authoritative state on a democratic

basis".

11

After the collapse of the Independent State of Croatia, most of

the professors at the Croatian School of Economics and Commerce

(CSEC) left Croatia, fearing justifiably or not the consequences

of their actions in that period. Dr. Eugen Sladović, who

was at the time of disintegration of the Independent State of

Croatia a vice-rector of CSEC, obviously not afraid of that, stays

with a small number of his colleagues (Dr. Nagy, Dr. Cuvaj, Dr.

Krajčević, Dr. Leitner, Dr. Valdec) in Zagreb. When, in the autumn

of 1945, Dr. Mijo Mirković, as the appointed rector, "took

over" the reconstruction of the School of Economics and Commerce,

one of his biggest problems was gathering the necessary

teaching staff, with an additional obstacle being the so-called a

University Court of Honor that was nothing but a political inquisition,

which does not judge who came out of the war "with

clean hands", but instead who is politically eligible and who is

not. Knowing Dr. Sladović and his entire work well, at the First

session of the Professors Council of the School of Economics and

Commerce in Zagreb, held on October 3, 1945, Dr. Mirković expressed

a positive opinion of him as ... a very valuable gentleman,

who still could master many things (in teaching), but… will

probably face like other SOC teachers the University Court of Honor.

Unfortunately, Mirković's unspoken premonitions came

true. By the decision of the University Court of Honor, Dr. Eugen

Sladović was permanently removed from the EKVŠ and the

University of Zagreb, and his only "proven sin" was the label of

a "clericalist".

Prof. Eugen Sladović died at the age of 78, completely forgotten

by the public, in Zagreb on October 8, 1960.

In the cycle organized by the Croatian Center of the European Law

Institute (ELI Croatian Hub), the sixth webinar was held on September

17, 2021, with the guest lecturer Mr. Uglješa Grušić, Ph.D., from

University College London, Faculty of Laws. The webinar brought

together participants from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany,

Kosovo, and Northern Macedonia.

The sixth webinar was opened by Mr. Hrvoje Pauković, M.Sc., director

of the Croatian Insurance Bureau and co-head of ELI Croatian

Hub. The topic of the webinar was Civil Liability for Human Rights

Violations: A Novelty in Comparative Law. In his lecture, Mr. Grušić,

Ph.D., presented the key findings of the comparative law project on

civil liability for human rights violations, of which he was the cocoordinator.

The project explored existing mechanisms for filing

civil lawsuits aimed at establishing the accountability of public and

private actors for human rights violations in sixteen national legal

systems. National reports and project findings will be published by

Hart Publishing in the book E. Aristova and U. Grušić (ed.), Civil

Remedies and Human Rights in Flux: Key Legal Developments in Selected

Jurisdictions (Hart, 2022).

Mr. Grušić, Ph.D., in his lecture focused on three novelties: 1) innovative

use of civil law to establish liability in a business and human

rights context (e.g. direct liability of the parent company, secondary

liability, lawsuits based on the rules of unjust enrichment and real

property); 2) innovative civil lawsuits against public and private

actors in which one of the essential elements is a violation of international

public law (e.g. the Nevsun case in Canada and the cases of

Mothers of Srebrenica, Urgenda, and Milieudefensie vs. RDS in the

Netherlands); 3) an increase in the number of special laws aimed at

eliminating certain types of human rights violations that rely on

existing civil law mechanisms (e.g. the French law on due diligence).

After discussion with the participants, the webinar was concluded

with the announcement of the seventh and eighth webinars to be

held in October.

Announcements of the ELI Croatian Hub webinars in October

October 8, 2021, at 6 pm - the seventh ELI Croatian Hub webinar will be opened by Assist. Prof. Ivan Tot, Ph.D., and the guest lecturer

will be Prof. Alan Uzelac, Ph.D., full professor and Head of the Chir of Civil Procedural Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb,

who will give a lecture "European rules of civil procedure: How could the ELI / UNIDROIT model improve Croatian procedural law?". In

the focus of the seventh webinar is a joint project of the European Law Institute (ELI) and the International Institute for the Unification

of Private Law (UNIDROIT): "From Transnational Principles to European Rules of Civil Procedure". Work on the project was completed in

September 2020, after nearly seven years of uninterrupted work. Elaborating on the principles published in 2004 by the American Law

Institute (ALI) in collaboration with UNIDROIT, a comprehensive set of procedural rules was presented that should include best European

civil procedural law practices in a way that allows for their direct or partial transposition into national procedural legislation of European

countries. More than 50 experts in the civil process from the academic and professional spheres from various European countries

worked on this unique project. In this lecture, Prof. Alan Uzelac, Ph.D., as one of them, who was also an active coordinator of one of the

In July 2021, AMPEU published a public invitation to higher education

institutions to participate in the international virtual fair EAIE

Community Exchange 2021 - Virtual conference & exhibition, which

will be held from September 28 to October 1, 2021, via a virtual platform.

The aim of this Call was to select up to 25 Croatian higher

education institutions whose representatives will participate in the

fair and promote the work of their institutions and study opportunities

in the Republic of Croatia. The Faculty of Economics & Business

- Zagreb has successfully passed the evaluation and will take part in

one of the world's largest conferences for an international education

and have its sub-stand.

The purpose of the fair is to network with foreign higher education

institutions, concluding new partnerships, and strengthening the

presence in the field of international higher education. We emphasize

that this fair is not visited by pupils and students but is intend-

ed for employees of higher education institutions and other institutions

and organizations focused on international cooperation and

internationalization. In addition to the exhibition part, a virtual

conference with a rich program will take place in parallel.

The Agency leased a national virtual pavilion at the EAIE Community

Exchange event, which can be attended by up to 25 subcontractors,

i.e., higher education institutions. Each of the subcontractors

will have at disposal their website within the pavilion and the possibility

of arranging and holding online meetings.

On September 13, 2021, promotional billboards of the Office for

International Cooperation were installed in the lobby of the Faculty.

The panel entitled FEBZG International Student Exchange explains

to local students everything they need to know about the

exchange, while the bilingual panel of the Ured za međunarodnu

suradnju / International Office addresses domestic and foreign exchange

students with the aim of getting acquainted with all activities

of the Student Office.
