Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we 

talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, 

who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay 

of the land. 

The place: Tommy’s Folly Café inside Congress Hall at 200 Congress 

Place in Cape May. Not to be confused with the boutique and 

kids’ shop located across the street on the corner of Carpenters Lane 

and Perry Street. 

The vibe: The café sits right inside the main doors to your left 

with a beautiful view of the veranda facing beach avenue. They have a 

couple small tables for guests to enjoy their morning coffee as well as 

a rack carrying a variety of books and magazines to choose from. You 

can also grab your morning post from the news stand with local and 

national newspapers. There are plenty of chairs and tables that fill the 

lawn for a nice spot to enjoy your morning in the sun — anywhere at 

the café is a great place to start the day. 

The barista: April is new to the Cape Resorts team and has been 

a barista at Tommy’s Folly for about a month — it’s her first time 

slingin’ cups of joe and she’s loving every minute. “It’s very eventful 

and there’s a lot of multitasking needed,” she says. “It’s nice working 

here so far, and I love our iced vanilla lattés and breakfast paninis 

which is a great bonus to the job.” April definitely put her multitasking 

skills to work being the only barista behind the counter — you would 

never know she’s only been there a month. 

The food: Kayla and Nicole started their busy Monday, well... busy 

week, with breakfast sandwiches and lattés to bring back to the office. 

Kayla went with the breakfast panini with bacon, egg and American 

cheese and a hot vanilla latté while Nicole enjoyed a breakfast bagel 

with pork sausage, egg and gouda with an iced caramel latté — no 

temperature will keep Nicole from and iced coffee. Everything was 

delicious and kept us full until dinner! 

The takeaway: Tommy’s Folly Café is open every day at 6:30am. 

Grab something on the go or enjoy it inside. They also have cans of 

beer for purchase.

it? Like a boat? Sorry, I’m a little 

tired…) I haven’t done a whole lot of 

socializing the last couple of weeks, 

so the column, unlike me, might be a little 

thin. But hopefully you enjoy a nugget here 

and there. Also, by a “couple of weeks” I mean 

15 years. 

Confusing Texts of the Week: I’m good 

friends with a couple of great guys, both 

named Dave, one’s last name is Bee, the 

other’s is Dee, so you can probably see where 

this is headed… They each sent me very kind 

words of consolation regarding the death of 

my brother Dan (I know, I know, I promised 

to be less morbid, I mention for comedic 

context only purposes), but in my, uh, altered 

state (grief + anger + Jameson’s, a drink we 

call “The O’Brien”), I kept replying to one 

when I thought it was the other and, well, 

let’s just say that Dave Dee is my new Beatles 

guitar player and Dave Bee owes me some 

Chick-Fil-A. (2% of you might get this joke, 

the other 98% are people not named Dave 

Dee and Dave Bee.) 

While on the topic of mourning, last 

Thursday morning (pun!), after my “Leia’s 

Theme”-inspired psychotic break, I figured 

that was the best time to have a pint of rum 

for breakfast, mow my lawn and set ablaze 

the giant pile of limbs and grass clippings I’d 

accrued over two summers. It was a good, 

old-fashioned, 11am bonfire. Bonus points 

for hauling several large fence sections across 

my sizable yard and tossing onto a raging 

inferno as electric bolts shot through my 

back. Hey, it seemed like a good idea at the 

time. Doesn’t everything after a pint of rum? 

By the time you read this I will have 

(hopefully) survived nearly two weeks with 

-$106 in my regular bank account and $109 in 

my secret music account. I haven’t eaten this 

much Ramen since, well, who doesn’t like a 

little Ramen now and then? Point being, we 

was broke. Thank god I had the foresight 

to buy all that frozen crap back in 2016 I’m 

harvesting from the back of the freezer and 

subsisting on now. No idea what Cath and the 

boys are doing... 

I had no idea Sunset Liquors was a drivethru… 

Cape May Dancers put on a typically 

excellent show at the Middle Township PAC 

center last Friday. The dances were great 

but, most importantly to a guy who’s hosted 

about 50 Halloween karaoke shows, none of 

the songs were “Monster Mash” or “Wicked”. 

My son Jackson remained front and center 

in most numbers and will remain so until 

bested in a contest of strength involving

I hung out last month with my 

best friend Adam Sandler). The 

show was originally scheduled 

a month prior but was delayed 

when the set took too long to 

load in and out. The set is a basketball 

court. And Wells Fargo is 

a basketball arena. Just… am I 

the only one whose brain hurts 

over this? 

I stand behind Alec Baldwin. 

Always, always behind him. 

Got in the car Friday afternoon, 

fired up WXPN, and they 

were playing “New York State of 

Mind” by Billy Joel. Immediately 

my heart sunk because WXPN 

NEVER plays Billy Joel, which 

means something horrible must 

have happened. A few seconds 

later the announcer says, “That’s 

Billy Joel at Sigma Studios in 

1974... “ And? AND!?! “... and 

Billy Joel’s vinyl box set comes 

out next month…” Whew... 

Dune is the greatest sci-fi/ 

fantasy world-building epic 

space opera since Star Wars and 

maybe of all time. Yes, there’s 

lots of House of This and Duke 

of That gobbledygook in the first 

hour, but I understood what was 

going on the whole (long) time 

(157 minutes), and found myself 

wishing it was three hours longer, 

with maybe a 10-minute 

intermission for my poor bladder. 

Enthralling. And another 

triumph for director Denis 

Villenueve (Arrival, Blade Runner 

2049, Sicario). 

Wake-Up Call of the Week: 

The cashier at Acme, a lovely, 

20-something lady, rang up 

my order ($186 for half-a-cart 

of household essentials, thanks 

Brandon) and asked, “Are you 

a senior?” Pardon? “Are you a 

senior?” I’m 51. “Okay.” I mean, 

I know I’ve had a rough couple of 

weeks but... damn... 

A smart writer would have 

published this next item last 

week during Halloween when it 

could have been written as a fake 

obituary or tombstone engraving 

or what have you, but I lack the 

ability to plan five days ahead so 

here we are. Anyway… 

End of an Era of the Week: 

A few months ago I reached 

the difficult decision that the 

year 2021 would be my last as 

the good-looking T of TNT. I’d 

intended to cruise through the 

last couple months of this, our 

seventh and final year together, 

as a sort of long goodbye, a victory 

lap, if you will. But life, as 

it does, had other plans. Recent 

events have put me in a head 

space where continuing on was 

just not going to be possible. 

So, long story short (too late, 

I know), it is my sad duty to 

announce that I have played my 

last gig as a member of TNT. 

Tim (Joyce) will soldier on 

without me for the rest of this 

year and remain on the Exit Zero 

roster in 2022, and I thank him 

for the last seven years. I am 

actively seeking a new full-time 

partner (if you think it might be 

you, drop me a line) and plan on 

returning to the stage on weekends 

starting in January. I also 

can’t wait to go into rehearsals 

with my tribute bands, who will 

be rocking Ferry Park starting 

next spring. And if that’s all the 

singing I do next year, I’m okay 

with that. 

So, a couple tumultuous 

weeks here at Undertow Central, 

some of it painful. But this too 

shall pass and I look forward to 

seeing what the future brings. 

After all, 2021 was so much better 

than 2020, wasn’t it?

Movies are back in town! And they 

come with live performances, a 

book/movie club and more! There 

hasn’t been this much excitement 

for movie lovers in Cape May 

since the Cape May Film Festival! 

Introducing End of the Road Theater in 

North Cape May (at the Bayshore Plaza). 

Jen is your host, and she’s set up a BYOB 

café-style screening room! Bring your own 

food, too (pizza, snacks, whatever — see if the 

movie theaters can top that!). There are lush 

black velvet seats you can configure any way 

you want. What does that mean? You move 

them around if you’ve brought your friends — 

or you can make some new friends. 

Movies cost about $11 and live shows are 

about $20 or so. You’ll find cool films you 

haven’t seen in a while — or gems you might 

have missed. Remember the film festival — 

you watched a movie then talked about it with 

friends. Well, the excitement is back! This

playing one of my favorites, Hell or High Water 

The Movie Column

twist on the bank robber motif is a gritty

The theater brings you amazing live entertainment 

as well. This weekend, there will be 

a performance of Meabh, a 16-year-old indie 

pop sensation from Ocean City, NJ. Two-time 

Grammy nominee Saint Luke produced her 

latest single. The show takes place Saturday, 

November 6 at 8pm. 

Another fun feature of this theater is the 

Movie Book Club. The group meets every 

other month to watch a film based on a book 

that you could read beforehand (but you don’t 

have to). Know how you get some book zealots 

who say, “Oh, the book was much better.” 

You know you who are. And believe me I get it, 

there are so many more twists and turns in a 

book that you can’t fit neatly into a two-hour 

film. Of course, the book is always better. 

Except don’t tell that to people who’ve read 

Peter Benchley’s Jaws then saw the movie. No 

contest there, am I right? The movie had way 

more suspense. And how about my favorite 

book, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird? And 

my favorite move? Also, To Kill a Mockingbird 

(1962). The next Movie Book Club takes place 

on Thursday, December 2 at 7pm with The 

Aftermath by Rhidian Brook. The movie stars 

Keira Knightly and Alexander Skarsgard.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

The animated spark dancing in your 

shrubs is a Yellow-rumped Warbler 

(Setophaga coronata). Breeding 

across boreal Canada to Alaska, 

Yellow rumps rank among the last 

of the fall songbird migrants and they are 

here, now. Some of these hardy warblers will 

even remain for the winter where others may 

head for the West Indies and Central America 

where the other 33 members of the genus 

are waiting. While insectivorous in summer, 

Yellow-rumps switch over to seeds and berries 

in winter, a flexibility that allows them to 

winter north of the freeze-line. Bayberry, Wax 

Myrtle, even Poison Ivy berries are all grist for 

the Yellow-rumps mill. 

The arrival of Yellow-rumps is always 

bitter sweet. They enliven the Cape with their 

hustle and bustle and sally flights to snap 

up insects in mid-air, but they mark the end 

of a migration that began last August with 

the first Northern Waterthrush and Mourning 

Warblers. Warblers are hot button birds among 

bird watchers and some birders account the 

fall migration over when these brightly colored 

forest birds arrive. No! November is 

prime for migrating hawks and waterfowl and 

if there is a food shortage in northern forests, 

we may be treated to a winter finch irruption 

and Common Redpolls arriving as late 

as February. No matter the season, no two 

mornings are alike — a single wayward waif 

can make a trip afield noteworthy. 

But back to yellow-rumps. If you’ve seen 

the birds buzzing about your yard, you’ve 

probably noted the bird’s namesake trait, the 

yellow patch at the base of the tail. To see 

the yellow drown that is the foundation of 

the bird’s scientific name “S. coronata,” you’ll 

have to wait until spring when adults molt 

into their flashy courting clothes. In winter 

the birds are grayish with touches of yellow. 

Not typically feeder birds, Yellow-rumps can 

be attracted to suet cakes, but with so much 

bayberry and Poison Ivy around, the birds can 

get by without your generosity, indeed one of 

the reasons Poison flourishes here is because 

Yellow-rumps spread the seeds after passing 

through the bird’s digestive tract. 

So, it’s true Cape May already has a warbler 

species named after it, the Cape May 

Warbler (Septophaga tigrina) it is the Yellowrumped 

Warbler that deserves to be regarded 

as the Cape’s emblematic warbler. Listen for 

the call note, a terse “cheh,” followed by a 

splash of yellow as the bird retreats. The cedar 

trees north of the hawk watch platform are a 

good place to see the bird. Bring binoculars.

Humans tend to collect things, and an 

even greater tendency to disagree 

over what is worth collecting. Find 

comedian George Carlin’s classic 

routine about “Stuff” online for a 

clear explanation of this disagreement — we 

all think our own stuff is important, but other 

people’s is, to paraphrase, not worth collecting. 

This may be why your internet search 

engine will offer “Can Collecting be a Mental 

Disorder?” when you search “collecting.” 

Don’t worry — regardless of the quality of 

your stuff, collecting can be a healthy hobby. 

Perhaps your collection of dolls reminds you 

of your happy childhood, or you use your 

spoon collection to track your travels. You 

might pick up a seashell every time you go to 

the beach or use a stamp collection to study 

geography. Collections of good luck charms 

often begin with a gift — a friend presents 

you a ceramic turtle on your birthday as a 

wish for a long life, a key to bring you success 

in love, or a coin from the year of your birth. 

Next thing you know, you’re on the hunt for 

a matching turtle, an older key, a different 

coin. Maybe you start researching the history 

of lucky turtles, and you learn something 

new about another culture. Maybe you 

need a display cabinet, so you dust off your 

woodworking skills. Or want to trade ceramic 

turtles around the world, so you learn to build 

a website. You talk to other collectors and 

build your social network, and you travel to 

meet your new friends. Even if your collection 

prompts you to do nothing more than smile, 

it’s good for you — collecting reduces stress 

and encourages you to challenge your mind. 

Like all good things, collecting can become 

problematic if you overdo it. Do not let your 

collection crowd other good things or spend 

your mortgage money on ceramic turtles — 

set limits. Despite the occasional windfall on 

Antiques Roadshow, financial experts say it is 

rare that collecting yields a profit. 

Cape May offers plenty of chances to 

begin or enhance collections this season. MAC 

holds its Fall Crafts and Collectibles Show at 

Convention Hall on Saturday, November 13, 

10 to 4 — $2 for adults and free for children 12 

and under. Vendors bring a variety of options, 

from tools to enhance the hobby you picked up 

during the pandemic, to treats for your pet and 

snacks for you. Finish Christmas shopping 

with soap and skin care products, candles, 

pretty journals to record deep thoughts, home 

decor, jewelry, hair clips and more. Additional 

craft shows will be held November 26 and 

December 4.

Thanksgiving dinner. I’m the youngest and 

have never done so but my sisters say because 

I am single with no kids, it should be at one of 

their homes. My parents only tell us “to sort 

it out.” Let me just say — I’m a CHEF! None of 

them can cook. I’m the only one, including my 

mother, who can put a turkey on the table that 

everyone at the table doesn’t want to drench 

with gravy. The restaurant is closed this year 

due to COVID and this is one of the few years 

I can host. I feel so strongly about this that 

if my sisters do not let me do this, I am done 

with ALL family gatherings. Why should I 

be punished for being single and childless?

shelter when his family could no longer care 

for him. He is a sweet and mellow dog who is 

easy to harness and loves long walks. Rocky's 

leash skills are excellent, and he mostly enjoys 

attention from his humans. According to his 

last owner, he gets along with children, cats 

and love frequent trips to the dog park. 

KANE is a stunning dog who came to the shelter 

when his family as unable to keep him. He 

is a four-year-old pup with a lot of energy 

and mature demeanor. Kane loves people and 

running around his yard and showing off his 

skills. He is learning useful behavior cues and 

is said to be the perfect family dog, living well 

with children and other dogs in the past. 

ROSCOE is a happy boy who came to the shelter 

when his owner moved and could not take 

him along. He can be nervous when meeting 

new people, but he warms up quickly. Roscoe 

does well on short car rides and is learning 

new behavior cues while improving his leash 

skills. Roscoe would do well in a home with 

other dogs, cats and children.
