6 Avonhead School pupils are the young quiz masters PUPILS IN the Western News area have come out on top in a national quiz competition grilling contestants on their general knowledge. The ODT Extra! Current Events Quiz took place last week, with more than 1000 teams of three participating in the online quiz across three age divisions. Avonhead School pupils placed first in the year 5 and 6 category of the event, and also took second in the year 7 and 8 category. Medbury School also did well, with pupils placing second in the year 5 and 6 category. ODT Extra! marketing manager Jeff Paterson said the quiz was broken down into 10 rounds covering questions from local and international geography, history, current events and general knowledge. Earlier this year Allied Press, publisher of the Otago Daily Times, teamed up with Dunedin digital educator Education Perfect to run the competition online. Education Perfect chief operations officer Emma McAllister said the quiz provided an interactive, digital competition Thursday November 4 2021 which was extended to those still experiencing lockdown conditions. The top 10 teams in each year group will join the top teams from the ODT Extra! Spelling Bee, which took place earlier this year, for the grand final at the Otago Museum later this month. Students’ drink bottle formula successful ST MARGARET’S College students are making a splash with their business idea of selling ‘drink bottles with a difference’. Nicola Crosbie, Nikita Bloy, Henrietta Osborne, Charlotte Gilray, and Olivia Peter won the Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Awards for North Canterbury last week. Twelve secondary school teams came in one after the other for a day of exciting Dragons Denstyle pitches, hosted at regional partner Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Christchurch campus. Splash for Change, by the St Margaret’s College team, was pitched as a business with charity at the heart of its mission. A total 50 per cent of the profit from each high-quality drink bottle is donated to a specific charity it represents, with colours or slogans to match. The business has an active presence selling drink bottles online which supports its three chosen charities: the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and Educating Girls Globally– a charity set up by two St Margaret’s College alumna. YES Canterbury regional coordinator Idoia Alday Gonzalez said social awareness was clear in the ideas of the regional winners. “I continue to be humbled by our YES youth. Winning teams will go on to represent their regions in the YES National Finals on December 15, also due to take place online.
