Note from the Editor
Glenn “Roley” Foley
Sheesh!
What a crazy month in the dirt
world. It seems as though everyone
is trying to catch up with events and
races on virtually every weekend.
It’s actually quite difficult to keep
up, but it is great to see so many
guys and girls out and about on
their bikes.
MX Des Nations – well done to Tristan,
David and Camden. Good show at
such short notice on one of the biggest
MX stages of them all. Tristan Purdon
was our top performer – and it’s the
first time since 2008 that an SA rider
has completed both races.
International Enduro: Wade, Travis,
and Matthew are flying our flag solidly
in the international enduro scene...
North Vs South: Great to see such
massive entries – Gauteng took the
honours... nice one guys – full feature
in our next issue.
National Enduro Racing: Creighton
national – Husqvarna’s Brett
Swanepoel was crowned the number
one winning the National Extreme and
National Enduro.
Yamaha’s Luke Walker was crowned
E2 National Enduro Champion.
KTM’s Bradley Cox is the E1 National
Enduro Champion and the Number one
National overall Enduro Champion.
National MX is cooking at the moment
– as is the national Off-road series...
We’ll play catch up on all of this in our
next issue...
Have a great riding month – and
remember –
The VFX-WR:
The VFX-WR’s liner incorporates the unique
M.E.D.S. (Motion Energy Distribution System),
a specially inserted module of the EPS liner
designed to absorb sudden impacts by reducing
rotational acceleration to the head in the event
of a crash. Shoei’s in-house testing showed
rotational energy to be reduced by 15% in
comparison to that of the VFX-WR off-road
helmet. The shell is constructed with highperformance
AIM+ (Advanced Integrated Matrix
Plus Multi-Fiber), a combination of fibreglass
and organic fibres. The result is a rigid, ultralightweight,
yet elastic structure. And don’t
forget… It looks very, very cool!
the team in marketing for the Husqvarna
and GasGas brands in the KTM SA group.
Couple that with his graphic design skills
thanks to his time with Racestar Graphics
and having managed the family business
for a number of years and “Voila!” you
have a winning formula. Grant lives and
breathes absolutely anything motorcycling
related and is equally as good on the
tar, (as two supermotard championships
would suggest), as he is in the dirt … and
he can whip a dirt bike properly...
He has been with the brands for 3 or 4
months now and is loving life. BRAAP!
Hartebeespoort Dam Bike Meander.
21 November 2021, Hartbeespoort Holiday Resort.
The Rotary Club of Brits-Hartbeespoort is proud to present the Dam Bike Meander around the popular
Hartbeespoort area in North-West Province on Sunday, 21 November. The format is something like the
Amazing Race, except in teams of motorcycles and therefore far more fun. Each team will have to follow
clues and head to different locations around the scenic dam, scoring points for every object collected
and completed task. Such tasks include golf putting, archery and a slow race, among others. The total
distance is approximately 150km.
It starts at Hartbeespoort Holiday Resort, the venue of such events as the Rhino Rally, the Impala Rally
and the Pretoria Toy Run, at 9am and will end sometime around 1pm to live entertainment, food and a bar
back at Hartbeespoort Holiday Resort, plus the prize giving for both teams and individuals.
The idea is an evolution of the Rotary Club’s Classic Car Meander that has been running successfully
for the past few years and adapted for motorcycles. All profits from the event will be used by Rotary to
support lesser privileged children.
The entry fee is R130 per bike, paid either by EFT beforehand or on the day. Each entry gets a free
bandana, a badge and a Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway voucher valued at R240.
Sounds like a bargain and we’ll probably see you there!
CSMX Tierhoek – 29 August 2021
The 3rd round of the CSMX Enduro Racing season
for 2021 took place on top of a mountain-ringed
plateau at Piekenierskloof, surrounded by snowcapped
peaks of the Citrusdal mountain range.
With intermittent showers and then sunshine, the
riders got off to a staggered start as the terrain
could not accommodate the usual rush for the holeshot,
and then disappeared out into the tough loop
set for them by the Tierhoek Enduro Compound.
Rocks and MUD were prime features on the day
with many riders becoming totally bogged down in
various sections and needing assistance from their
fellow competitors to get going again. Rear wheels
were totally buried in the mud and the riders needed
to dig themselves out using only their hands.
Some vehicles in the pits even needed the tractor
that was on standby to extricate them from sticky
situations.
The coup de grace for the weary was a tyre-androck
obstacle section of about 90m length just
before the finish line which saw many victims using
the last of their energy to make it through.
The final events of the racing season, (4 & 5), will
be a double header at Bennie se Lapa, Robertson
on 23rd & 24th of October. All the riders are looking
forward to ending the year on a high note. Be
there!
Cape MX Tracks Revival
The Cape has a bevvy of historic local MX and
enduro tracks which fell into disuse or the areas
where they were previously located has been
developed and built over.
But all is not lost ... groups of passionate bike riders
are working together to bring some of these local
tracks back to life.
Malmesbury had a very popular and well-supported
MX track which, back in the day, also hosted
some regional and National MX events. Sadly the
location of the original track, which was conceived
and the development of which was driven by
Hennie Theron, is no longer available to be ridden
due to biological and botanical interests. Jannie
Terblanche, whose family was involved with the
original track, is in the process of developing a new
track just 5km outside the town to the north on the
N7. Being a passionate rider himself and knowing
that the Cape riders are not that familiar with hardpack
as found upcountry, he decided to set a track
that would give local riders a place to practice the
skills needed when competing around the country.
The new track has a very Glen Helen feel with its
massive drops and climbs, ready for any aspiring
rider to up his riding skills.
For more info: Jannie Terblanche 0769818409
The track at Lemoenskop – a farm outside
Caledon - started as the tip site for excess earth
from the mall development in the town but soon
the rider boys in the area saw the possibility of
using the mounds to create an MX track. A small
enduro track had been laid out previously on the
property and this was just an offshoot from there.
A successful riding day was held at the track on 18
September to raise funds for the track completion
and get it to official race condition. Although the
National riders were away contesting their rankings
in Pretoria, a crowd of Cape and local enthusiasts
were there to kick up dust and have fun – all in the
spirit of two wheeled competition.
Cairoli
Hot on the heels of a certain Mr Rossi
stepping down - one of the GOAT
takes a bow...
Antonio ‘Tony’ Cairoli announced his
plans at a special press conference
alongside KTM management in
Rome. The Italian will bring down
the curtain on a glittering world
championship career in which he
has become statistically the second
most decorated rider in the history
of the sport and the greatest racer
from his country to have thrown a
leg over a motocross machine.
bows out.
Importantly, Tony gave KTM a first premier
class crown in 2010 (his fourth and second in
MXGP). He followed the achievement with a
further four titles – all with the KTM 350 SX-F –
before triumphing again in 2017 with the KTM
450 SX-F. Together with Claudio de Carli and
his loyal technical crew, Cairoli has been a
mainstay of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing
team, image and development program since
that first 2010 season. He has won at least
one Grand Prix in all his 18 terms.
Currently, Tony is still very much in the mix
for a coveted 10th FIM World Championship
title. Prior to the FIM MXGP of Sardegna
(ITA), Cairoli accrued one win and five podium
finishes from the nine rounds of 2021 MXGP.

CAIROLI WAS PART OF THE WINNING TEAM (ITALIA) AT THE 2021
MXGP OF NATIONS. WHAT AN AWESOME WAY TO BOW OUT

At the time of this announcement, he is
third in the standings and only 29 points
from the top of the table.
Cairoli’s contract extension with the KTM
family means that the Italian will provide
his expertise in various segments and
potential future endeavors within the
KTM group, all with the aim to continue
developing the sport of Motocross for all
audiences.
Tony Cairoli: “This is not an easy
decision. I’ve always said that numbers
and statistics did not mean that much
to me. I think it was an achievement
for me and my family to win one world
championship so to have had a career
like this is very special. I feel that it is the
right time to stop. Everything around me
makes it seem like the right decision,
and we are still trying to win the title
this year, so the motivation is high for
this challenge. I want to thank all those
who have helped me and supported me
since I came to the world championship,
and all along the way actually. There
have been many faces and names and
of course all the excitement and love
from the fans. I have felt very much part
of the KTM family from day one and we
will continue our work and relationship
together, but now in a different way.
There is a lot more to do in life after 2021
but for now our goal is very clear.”
Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director:
“Our story started in an impressive way
because when Tony came to KTM when
we still hadn’t won a title in the premier
class and we were also developing the
KTM 350 SX-F, so it’s like there were
two challenges to conquer! To then
win five consecutive championships
and establish the 350 concept was a
big milestone for us. Over the years
the relationship became closer and the
friendship grew even more. A lot of our
success both in the U.S. and in MXGP
arrived because of those first years with
Tony and the belief that he had in us and
the vision for the future. It’s something
we didn’t forget and we won’t forget.”
Robert Jonas, VP of Motorsports
Offroad: “We’re immensely proud to
have been such a major part of Tony’s
career story and to have contributed
so much to one of the best motocross
racers the sport has ever seen. When
we first started working together with a
motorcycle that was almost a gamble
for the highest level of the world
championship at that time, I don’t think
we could have imagined the success
that would come, and just how deep
Tony was able to make his impression
on MXGP. He has fans all over the world
and some of the biggest are right here
in the factory. It will be strange not to
see that orange #222 on the track next
season but his passion for riding and his
experience will still be big assets for us.
The story doesn’t quite end here.”
The 2021 calendar is due to finish
with the Grand Prix of Mantova on
10.11.2021. After this event, Tony will
remain very much part of the KTM family
and part of the KTM race department
activities.
Antonio Cairoli is in the running for a
10th FIM World Championship in 2021
#222 has won 6 out of his 9 FIM World
Championships on KTM machinery
Cairoli has amassed 93 GP victories
and 177 podiums to-date
The Italian will provide his expertise
in key segments within the KTM group
for the future.
HAND BUILT
IN FRANCE
THE SHERCO SE 300
Let’s face it. There are some great
300cc 2-strokes on the market at the
moment – and to be quite frank there
really is no bad choice. But if you
want to stand out from the crowd –
then you’ll want to look at the Sherco
brand. The local importer offered us a
ride…
It’s been a long time since we got to
swing a leg over a Sherco. In fact… if
memory serves the last test was cut
short by a puncture and we kinda limped
home to change tubes. This one has
mousses fitted so there was no excuse
not to have a great time.
When Sean dropped the bike we were
given huge lectures about how new the
bike is – just uncrated and prepped – and
don’t even think about scratching it of
scuffing it with your boots…
Oh well… We’ll try!.
FACTORY
Two of our riders took the bike out – our
resident rock rabbit Kyle Lawrenson hit
some of the Gnarly rocks we know and
then the more chilled weekend warrior,
Glenn Foley took a few fast-ish laps (well
he thought so anyway…) at our spot.
So here you have opinions from two
very different but equally experienced
riders. We got into trouble because we
kept the bike for a little bit longer than
was scheduled – and young Sean had
a grump looking for the guys to get the
bike back…
The Bike:
With the pandemic and its effect on
travel and racing, most would imagine
that Sherco would have a small year in
‘22. But not so. They have introduced
some pretty cool updates for 2022.
Steps not leaps.
A couple of issues back we brought you
all the updates to this brands lineup – but
here’s a re-cap. The updates are typical
of the French manufacturer. They are
steps forward rather than leaps but that
is standard practice for Sherco who more
often prefer to keep the updates coming
year-on-year rather than make jumps
every few years.
The new, blue graphics and plastics are
fresh enough to mark the different model
year and they maintain Sherco’s standapart
looks on the back of your bakkie as
well as out on the track and trails.
Sherco’s Enduro range is split into two:
The Racing models are actually less
racey with a ‘softer’ setting and lower
price tag alongside the Factory models
which come equipped with a long list of
upgraded parts as standard making them
better suited to racing. Kapiche?
This one is the 300 Factory.

A
A
A
Gra
Two-stroke exhaust valves:
The bike has a new SBS electronic exhaust valve to control
the valve position – it’s under that black cover on the left side
of the engines. Sherco say their engineers have developed the
programmable valve system with the R&D department and
test riders. For 2022 the bike gets a new gear selector which
basically makes it more easily removeable thanks to a little bit of
feedback from their race teams and customers.
The bike has a selectable switch on the bars as standard to
adjust from full power to a softer setting for different conditions.
Gasses are expelled via an FMF Gnarly expansion chamber,
paired with an FMF Powercore 2 silencer.
Kayaba suspension
KYB suspension has always been standard on the Factory
edition. The Factory range gets red stickers to signify the higher
spec closed cartridge KYB units which have a race-oriented
setting.
Brakes
For 2022 the front brakes on the Factory models have a
Galfer disc or rotor. Sherco say the combination of Brembo
master cylinder and pads with the Galfer rotor improves
performance. There’s also a smaller handlebar pad on the Oxia
bars which, Sherco says is less cumbersome.
Other COOL features (Get it?) on the Factory are the fan and
coolant expansion chamber as standard. Ask anyone who does
the tough stuff – if you’re into hard or extreme enduros climbing
hills and getting stuck in rocky kloofs, this addition is a good
one.
So – it comes with all the bling…. How
does she sing?
Well rather well actually – exactly
what you’d expect from a modern 300
2-stroke enduro machine. Ben popped
the suspension onto a softer setting coz
he reckons we are all a bit fat (lockdown
you know…) The KYB has great adjustability
and the clickers are very sensitive
to even the most minor adjustments.
The bike starts easily via the happy
button. The Kei Hin carb feeds the fuel
into the head via V-force Read valves.
Blip the throttle and you’re rewarded with
a crisp burst of 2-smoke. The clutch is
soft, the gearshifter positive, open the
throttle.
quick shifts through the box and the two
stroke mill sings along at a rate of knots.
Big whoop – no need to tap off – she
flies and lands noice and soft – and – it’s
all just so easy. Aim for the steep rutted
climb in the back here. At speed the bike
would do just great, but… stop.
Hit the softer power button, engage
first and literally crawl up… that ignition
switch tames everything down and
allows the Michelin rubber and KYB
suspension to find traction in the slippery
gravel without spinning all over the shop.
Cool!
quickly.” The Bike was still running in, so
we did not go too berserk and you could
feel that the brakepads were not quite
properly bedded in. The clutch is light,
the bike has loads of torque for climbing
but is so quick and nimble when you
open up.”
A lot of this lekkerness is caused by that
pipe that delivers a lot of torque off idle
and helps the bike to scream along at the
top. It’s easy to understand why this bike
is successful in the world of hard Enduro.
The bike feels small, light and pretty
compact, the torque is excellent and with
the switch in soft mode she’ll drag you
up and down all day long.
But if you want to go fast and hit those
trails, she’s quick as anything and absolutely
brilliant fun. And oh yes!
She looks very different to any other 300
on the market.
In the rocks Kyle kept commenting on
the small feel and user friendly power
The bike feels light and small. Everything
seems to fit quite well, the gripper seat is
comfy and it’s easy to move around. The
handlebar bend on the Factory and the
Selle Dalla Valle seat put you in the great
riding position. Oxia bars are used, bolted
that the 300 delivers. “It’s not mad or
THE GREATEST
RANGER
EVER?
The Polaris Ranger 1000 EPS.
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
Stefan our Photographer passed a comment while we
were out shooting this machine the other day. “Glenn –
you’ve been testing and driving these things, basically
since they were invented!” That’s some food for thought
– and thinking back, he is probably correct. And not Just
Rangers – but every other brand along the way…
The early utility UTV’s were just that. Utility. Whilst they are
geared to torque and work capacity – most of the time, they
are limited to low speeds with adequate suspension.
Polaris seems to have thrown that business model clean out
of the window. We’ll tell you for free that this new 1000 is
basically a sports UTV, with a tremendous capacity for work.
In the work department, they give you a pretty large machine
– it JUST fits onto the back of our H100 Hyundai Bakkie. It’s
got loads of carrying space in the tipper Bak out back. In the
cab you get comfy, spacious moulded seating for 3, 6 Cup
holders so you’ll battle to get thirsty, and nooks and crannies
to stash everything from stock sheets to laptops and cell
phones.
Safety wise you get over shoulder seatbelts – and if the
driver does not plug in, the Ranger will limp along slowly.
Polaris has improved the design of the safety net doors and
the roof, bolted onto the sturdy cab chassis keeps the sun
off your pip.

Controls all make perfect sense – 1, 2 and 4wd on the fly via a
button on the dash. Easy automatic gear selection – Hi, Low,
park and reverse – all up and down operation via a lever on
the dash. Two pedals in the foot well – go and – errr stop – so,
it’s literally childs play to get going. Two charging ports are
conveniently mounted on the dashboard and the neat little digital
display tells you everything you need to know about what the
Ranger is up to. So easy and convenient to hop in and tear off
down the track.
But that all sounds kinda same – same as previous and other
utility models right?
Well – this one’s different, and it all starts with the parallel twin
engine that is, quite frankly brilliant. We’d wager that the Ranger
will give some sports machines a proper run for their money.
Put your foot down – and in a few heartbeats, the car is toodling
along at more than 100KPH. And she gets there quickly. On
longer roads, we saw 120 – and that’s more than fast enough for
a machine like this.
But wait! You know the old Cliché’ that goes: Power is nothing
without control? (Sorry Pirelli!) Well it’s true – we’ve seen how
many people hot their machines up – but they simply do not
handle. Well – out of the box, this one does. And to be fair,
we have often harped on about how well the Polaris Brand
makes this happen – but, certainly for what is branded as a
utility machine, this one is quite exceptional. The combination
of a wide chassis, big steel wheels shod in decent rubber and
suspension that travels longer than your favorite uncles tallest
tales combine to give an amazingly plush ride.
You need to drive one at speed to understand just how good it
all is.
And… Oh Yes! Did we mention that they have included power
steering? It’s magnificent! It literally removes any effort.

We really took her quickly around out
test field out back here – and constantly
expected big lurches and judders on
the harsh, hard packed terrain. We
“accidentally” hit big lurkers, ruts and
imperfections flat-out, Stefan even aimed
her across a grassy field that was ploughed
last season and we fully expected to lose
our dentures. Well – we didn’t.
We did stare at each other wide eyes as
the big girl simply floated across. Just for
giggles we tramped on the brakes and she
safely comes to a very quick, predictable
halt.
We don’t even need to discuss 4x4
prowess – we aimed at some pretty soggy
mudbanks, crossed every river we could
find and made mincemeat of them all –
without even bothering with the 4wd switch
or low range. That’s for sissies right?
Up and over our long mountain she made
light work of any rocks, laughed at steep
embankments and safely brought the
occupants down the steep side where
we took off in glee along the sand roads
towards home stepping the ass out around
the long, marble festooned sweeps.
It’s that good.
Really, really, forget everything you think
about utility machines, this is a farm bakkie
on steroids. Nope! It’s not a bakkie.
It’s a Ranger and it will change the way you
think about utility Side By Sides.
BILLY BOLT
MOVES TO THE TOP OF HARD ENDURO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS
The sixth round of the FIM Hard Enduro
World Championship saw Rockstar
Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s
Billy Bolt move to the top of the series
standings thanks to a hard fought
second-place result. Teammate Alfredo
Gomez enjoyed a mixed outing at the
Polish race, winning the Saturday night
SuperEnduro before finishing seventh in
Sunday’s main race.
With just one point separating Bolt
from championship leader Manuel
Lettenbichler prior to the start of HERO
Challenge, Billy arrived in Poland with
his sights set on doing all he could
to move to the top of the title chase.
Highly motivated following his victory
last time out in the USA, Bolt began the
proceedings in a determined mood.
Finishing a close second in the Saturday
morning qualifier, he went on to back
that up with fourth in the night time
SuperEnduro. Knowing it was all to play
for during Sunday’s three-hour extreme
cross country race, he was quick to
position himself at the sharp end of the
results. Locked in an early battle with
eventual race winner Wade Young, Bolt
held a strong second place.
With a couple of small crashes costing
him valuable time, the Husqvarna TE 300i
rider opted to protect his position during
the latter stages of the race knowing the
championship lead would be his with a
second-place result. After three gruelling
hours of racing, Bolt crossed the finish
line for second and with it becomes the
new FIM HEWC championship leader
with two rounds remaining.
For Alfredo Gomez, the event was one
of two halves. Saturday’s SuperEnduro
action proved to be the highlight of the
weekend for the Spaniard. Fast and
confident on the tight and technical
course, Gomez easily advanced through
all of the eliminator heats to take his
place in the four-rider final alongside
Bolt. Hot out of the gate, Alfredo
immediately took the race lead and was
never headed.
For Sunday’s racing, the fast and sandy
whooped out conditions didn’t play into
the Hard Enduro specialist’s hands.
While starting strong thanks to his pole
position, the Husqvarna rider lost ground
in the high-speed sections, eventually
finishing seventh.
Billy Bolt: “It’s been a full-on weekend
with lots of styles of racing. Today’s
cross country race was physical out
there for the three hours. I don’t have
much left in the tank now! I would have
loved to take the win, but second place
is great for the championship and now
puts me in the lead by one point. I
was battling with Wade at about mid
distance. But I needed an extra pit stop
and lost some ground. A crash then saw
me lose sight of him, so I just tried to
play it safe. I didn’t want to make any
more mistakes and lose a position to
Mani either.”
FIM Hard Enduro World Championship
standings (after 6 of 8 rounds)
1. Billy Bolt (Husqvarna) 70pts
2. Manuel Lettenbichler (KTM) 69pts
3. Wade Young (Sherco) 60pts
4. Mario Roman (Sherco) 48pts
5. Jonny Walker (Beta) 44pts
6. Alfredo Gomez (Husqvarna) 33pts

Round7
Over the last few issues you’ve heard and seen all
the news around the Linex Yamaha Development
series.
It’s a roaring success with young MX riders being
exposed to the sport, having some cool dices,
being tutored as they go along and moving up in the
ranks...
The last event was hosted by ERORA on the 12th
of September. 87 kids lined up throughout the 3
classes, 50, 65 and 85cc’s.
Lots of riders have already moved from the Junior series into
the popular Inland championship, with new faces arriving at
the series on every fixture.
The guys from Linex Lynwood were on hand to support and
assist all the Yamaha mounted juniors on the day.
It’s great to see so many very used bikes seeing the sunshine
again throughout all the classes. This is not cheque book
racing – Race what ya brung!
The PW 50 class is growing at a rate of knots – and lots of
really old bikes are being resurrected and revamped to look
factory!

The next event is at Terra Topia – 24th October for
Round 8!
Round 9 is at Smoking Pistons with the final event for
2021 at Chestnut Hill on the 28th Nov....
More info: www.inlandmx.co.za or – chat to the guys at
Linex Yamaha
www.linex.co.za
Dates for the rest of the year:
Sept 12 – ERORA on the East Rand.
Nov 1st Smoking Pistons – Alberton.
Oct 24th Terra Topia Near Randburg.
28 Nov – Chestnut Hill near Rayton.
Much like a typical superbike school. This is to make
things safer and more fun for the riders – the kids race
against similar paced riders on similar machines.
As the riders improve through the year, they then
progress up through the classes – and once they are
consistently fast enough in the A class, they can then
“Graduate” to the inland race series.
It all makes good sense, a safe, controlled way to feed
our sport without piling on too much pressure.
HOWEVER: In saying that – you need to see just how
competitive the kids become. It is a full on race no
matter what anyone says – four 10 minute sessions per
event as fast as you can go.
At every race the kids get a 10 minute practice session
at that specific track just to make sure that a fast rider at
ERORA is not too slow for – let’s say, Chestnut.
Mixing the track up also makes sense because the kids
get to ride in all different kinds of conditions - The
tracks are all very different. They don’t just ride at the
same place each time.
ATS Timing is at every event, so you can see how your
kids progress (Or regress) from lap to lap or track to
Track.
Chad and Ashleigh Arnold are Clerk of the course and in
charge of the timing and smooth running of each event.
Linex Yamaha and blU crU are the main sponsors
behind the series. Nice guys!
8 events per year – 2 races per track.
Porterville
2 – 4 & 5 September 2021
With the cancellations and delays of events this year the
Western Cape Off-road Club decided to close off the racing
season with a double header, again in the Porterville region,
in order to make up the shortfall for 2021.
The weekend of the 4th & 5th September was the chosen
slot and preparations went full steam ahead. The weather
turned out to be sunny… and rainy… and cloudy ... all seasons
in two days.
As usual, the morning was a mad rush to get ready for the Junior
50cc’s with their sighting lap scheduled for 7.30am. Five excited
young riders, along with dad escorts/marshals made their way
to the line and were quickly flagged off to go and check out their
loop, and then all too soon they were ready to rumble. Donovan
Jacobs C923 and Jamie Gulliver J105 were the ones to chase,
although the mud on the first day did cause some problems
with the small bikes and bogging down was a real issue which
caused one of the young riders to collect a DNF on Day 1 as his
trusty steed needed to be dug out of the worst section. Thankfully,
the mud sections were avoided on Day 2, enabling all riders
to finish.
Day 1 results:
1st - Jamie Gulliver
2nd - Donovan Jacobs
3rd - Jacques de Villiers
Day 2 results were :
1st - Donovan Jacobs C923
2nd - Jamie Gulliver J105
3rd - MJ van Heerden 334

The 65cc class was dominated by Jariegh van
Lill 424 who, after some recuperation time since
the previous event at the end of May, was racing
ahead of his 65cc compatriots and even giving
the 85cc riders some strong competition! Ryan
Gulliver J106 and Michael Enslin J277 were
having a ding-dong battle over the two days for
2nd and 3rd places in their class, with AJ Basson
getting a peep in on the first day.
Day 1 results:
1st - Jariegh van Lill
2nd - Ryan Gulliver
3rd - AJ Basson
Day 2 results:
1st - Jariegh van Lill
2nd - Michael Enslin
3rd - Ryan Gulliver
The Senior 85cc class saw strong riding at the
front with some of the top riders in the class having
bike problems which saw them having to pull
out of the race for Day 1 but more than making
up for it on Day 2.
Day 1 results:
1st - Andrew de Kock
2nd - CG van Zyl
3rd - Liam Abbey
Day 2 results:
1st - Joop Coetzee
2nd - Andrew de Kock
3rd - Liam Abbey
Junior 85cc saw some really unusual events as,
on Day 1, one of the top juniors was lost for a
time until the marshals found him digging his
bike out of the mud with his hands and helped
him to get out and back to the pits. As his dad
said afterwards, he showed the pluck to keep on
going, not give up and was determined to finish
the event.
Day 1 results:
1st - AJ Louw
2nd - Willem Schalk van Wyk
3rd - Jamie Berry
Day 2 results:
1st - AJ Louw
2nd - Paul Malcolm
3rd - Jamie Berry
Ladies Intro. was raced and won by Amy Rademeyer
C275 who enjoyed the flowing and fast
sections on the first day which contrasted greatly
with the more technical loop on Day 2. Although
the mud played a BIG part, overall she enjoyed
seeing everyone and the event was great fun.
Ladies Senior class, although small, has plenty
of tough ladies in it. And with the mud on
the weekend they had to be! On Day 2, after
taking a left line through a mud puddle (which
turned out NOT to be a puddle!) – Angie then
spent over 2 hours digging her bike out ...
maybe shovels should be part of the issued
equipment on the day! Riki Mans also fell victim
to the mud monster when her chain gave
up struggling with the gelatinous goo and
stretched so much she was unable to finish.
Day 1 results:
1st - Angie Muller
2nd - Alison Droomer
3rd - Riki Mans
Day 2 results:
1st - Alison Droomer
2nd - Lizelle van Dyk
3rd - Angie Muller
In the 125cc class there was strong competition
at the front of the pack and the top three
managed to each retain their standings on
both days. The boys enjoyed the more technical
tracks up the mountain where the enduro
riders had a bit of an advantage but overall
the track was rated to be tops.
Day 1 results:
1st - Izan Coetzee
2nd - Hermanus Bruwer
3rd - Thys Dekker
Day 2 results:
1st - Izan Coetzee
2nd - Hermanus Bruwer
3rd - Thys Dekker
The 200cc class also had its share of ups
and down although the top two retained their
spots while the rest of the field fought their
way through the many tough sections of the
course.
Day 1 results:
1st - Kevin de Kock
2nd - Charles Reinhardt Kersop
3rd - Jan-Ruben Botha
Day 2 results:
1st - Kevin de Kock
2nd - Charles Reinhardt Kersop
3rd - Albert van Dyk
In the Regional Open the riders were impressed
with the track on the first day with
its mix of flowing and technical. Quite a few
found lots of mud to land in with one or 2
needing help to get out of fences they veered
into.

Day 1 results:
1st - Jarryd Coetzee
2nd - Devan Marais
3rd - Francois vd Vyver
Day 2 results:
1st - Wilhelm Schonfedt
2nd - Devan Marais
3rd - Darren Gray
The Social class saw lots of action with many riders taking
their turns in the top positions. Fences were also a
part of the “things to avoid” list but judging by the number
of fence stories being shared, this item was definitely
ignored on the day!
Day 1 results:
1st - Martin van Heerden
2nd - William Stephens
3rd - Jacques Uys
Day 2 results:
1st - Jacques Uys
2nd - Percy le Roux
3rd - Andries Engelbrecht
The Senior class saw some hard racing, so hard that one
rider ran out of fuel 50m from the finish line! Lucky that
KTM has that sneaky second tank. After giving his bike a
“rest” on the ground he was able to make it into the pits
for a much-needed refuel – much to his relief!
Day 1 results:
3rd - Mark Gandy
Day 2 results:
1st - John Perreira
Anton had the class to himself on Sunday and had fun
racing the two-wheelers all day!
Although the race had to be red flagged on the Sunday
after two of the riders needed medical attention, the
weekend was overall a great success.
The glamping was excellent – neat, clean and well laid
out with all necessities waiting for tire riders to clean up
and take a well-earned rest. A big thank you to Ryno
and team!
WCOC can be grateful that Ockert Swart, their tireless
track setter, is a club member who also has a family who
loves the sport and support him, and therefore the club,
on all the weekends of preparation before the event, and
then clean up of the loops afterwards. His loops are wellplanned
and take all types of terrain into account with
a skill and knowledge of rider capabilities. Thank you,
Ockie!!!
A big shout out to the farmer, Rikus, who did so much
behind the scenes and was available all weekend to
assist where needed.
Everyone was happy that the racing season ended well.
Riding the beautiful terrain in the Porterville area as well
as a section along the old ox wagon road at the foot of
the mountains makes the racing and club events even
more special in the Western Cape.
Oh my goodness! The Master class were on the gas both
days and gave the other classes more than a run for their
money!
Day 1 results:
1st - Johan van Lill
3rd - Izak Mans
Day 2 results:
1st - Johan van Lill
3rd - Izak Mans
On Day 1 the Quads had a good field of 5 riders but
unfortunately 2 riders had to bow out - one with a burnt
clutch and the second, an MX rider, never having experienced
such a tough loop with all the terrain obstacles
that he ended up doing a day-to-night ride.

manner, ensuring safe and
compliant events.
NRMX hosted its fourth round of its
tightly contested Regional Motocross
Championship a brand-new location,
Chestnut Hill Motocross Park in
Bronkhorstspruit. A huge amount of
effort, energy and time has been spent
working with organisers and track
owners to ensure that racing gears itself
towards the inclusion of, not only the
long-awaited spectators post Covid-19
but taking motocross to the next level.
Chestnut Hill truly encapsulated this and
gave all the riders a taste of what can
be expected in time to come, with the
inclusion of a DJ, it created an incredible
atmosphere enjoyed by riders and their
support teams alike. Now, all we need is
to bring back the spectators!
As with all motocross events, the early
morning ritual of an incredible African
sunrise, coffee and the smell of twostroke
engines warming up, joined with
the last-minute hustle and bustle of
factory teams, privateers and moms
and dads all gearing up their gladiators,
young and old, ready to do battle.
Round Four presented some epic racing
across all classes, highlighting why so
many of our participating riders are
currently South Africa’s best. This also
gave way to several up-and-coming
talents worth keeping an eye on for the
future.
A free practice session of five laps was
followed by a two-heat race for each
class to determine an overall winner for
the day. The points scored in each heat
will accumulate towards the season end
championship, where a Regional Title
will be awarded in each class, with the
exception of the Support classes.
)

Due to Covid-19 restrictions and the number of
people allowed to attend open air events, the
racing was split into two parts with senior riders
taking to the track in the early morning session
while our junior riders followed suit in the
afternoon. Track conditions were optimal when
the flag dropped for our senior MX1 (Premier
450cc 4 strokes), MX2 (250cc 4 strokes), MX3
(Veterans and Masters), MX4 (Ladies) and
Support Classes not to mention the young dare
devils in the 125cc Highschool Class.
Jesse Wright ended the day with special
memories not only finishing first in his MX1
class, but he then rushed off to the hospital to
collect his wife after being discharged with their
second child – congratulations Jesse and Lisa,
hoping we have another talented racer in the
making!
Cameron Durow and Jayden Proctor made up
second and third for the day.
MX2 saw some incredible wheel to wheel action
with Cameron Durow walking away with the
spoils followed by Joshua Mlimi in second and
Marco De Vrye taking the final podium step for
the day.
In our Ladies Class the unstoppable Kayla Raaff
once again took top honours with Jadene De
Lima and Cheyenne De Lima filing in second
and third respectively. Chad Tyler gave an
impressive performance to take the top step of
the podium in MX3 followed by Jason Hill and
Byon Linaker. In our Support Class Riccardo
Hills, Marhinus Du Plessis and Quentin Foster
took the honours.
In our crazies class of the Highschool 125cc,
we saw Jonathan Mlimi give a jaw dropping
performance to clinch the number one spot
while a solid effort was put in by Miguel de Waal
in the chase down and had to settle for a rock
solid second with Barend Du Toit picking up the
final podium for the day.
REGIONAL MX
Our last class and the riders of the
future, were our 85cc classes, split
only by wheel sizes.
Juniors being small wheels and Pro-
Mini on bigger wheels. This class saw
these pocket rockets put on a great
show. Emmanuel Bako smashed
through for a double win taking the
top step in a convincing fashion with
Trey Cox and Ryan Adler coming
home in amazing style to round out
the podium steps. Our Junior Class
saw Matthew Correia, Alex Cooper
and Ger-Drie de Beer fight it out for
the top honours and finished in that
order.
With a very successful day done and
dusted, it was time for the officials
and support staff to wrap up, pack
up and consolidate the day before
moving everything over to prepare for
the next round in the championship
– and get ready for it all to be done
again!
A parting note and special thank you
and acknowledgment has to go out
to all the riders and support crew who
work tirelessly day in and day out to
143. Chad Tyler (MX3)
ensure these machines are in tip top
working condition. Its no wonder that
motocross is rated as one of the most
gruelling sports known to man, not
just from the physicality standpoint,
but the psychological aspect as well.
It sees riders pushing themselves to
their limits over and over again in the
hopes to achieve that perfect ride
and bring home the gold! So, the next
time you see a dirt bike driving by with
sponsorship decals, show them some
love, give them a shout out because
these boys and girls are truly elite
warriors!
This Championship would not be
possible without our generous
With the senior classes out of the way, we
moved our attention to our junior classes. Some
last-minute track prep was required before we
unleashed the swarm onto the same battle
ground warmed up by our senior riders. The
impressive abilities of the junior 50cc Class
didn’t disappoint tackling the same riding
conditions as the seniors definitely left us feeling
that Motocross as a whole, is in good hands
with some extremely talented kids coming
through the ranks.
Maxwell Fourie showed the field the way with
an impressive double win for the top step at
the end of the day, followed closely by Casper
van Zyl and Rayden Woolls who rounded up the
50cc Class.
Our biggest class for the day and arguably the
one that always brings much attention to our
race day, was the 65cc class where Sven Larsen
took the illustrious spoils followed by Aden
Henley and Blake Frost….. names to look out
for as they move into more senior classes in the
near future.
SEPTEMBER IN CLOCOLAN
Words & Pics: Coetzee Zietsman
When you try to organise a bike trip
during a Covid pandemic, you have
to approach it with a sense of humor.
Lockdown makes us believe that little
is known about the world out there.
We are sometimes not even sure if
there is a wide world out there …
somewhere. And thus our “September
in Clocolan” trip came about. We
needed to re-establish a link with the
world. Jason Killian of Modderbok
Adventures and I took our Covid fears
by the horns and planned a trip to Clocolan
in the middle of the winter. The
President interfered with our plans
when he locked the country down and
our “Chill in Clocolan” trip became the
“September in Clocolan” trip.
The Eastern Free State and in particular
the little town of Clocolan, hosted two
BMW GS Eco events in 2012 and 2013.
I had the privilege to scout and build the
routes for those events,
so Clocolan was an easy choice. With
the country going through a Covid
recession, we knew the trip had to be as
affordable as possible. St Augustine’s
in the enclave of Modderpoort between
Clocolan and Ladybrand offered
nice rooms, with breakfast and dinner
included, at an affordable rate. They can
accommodate 120 people. We were 17
in total including the backup crew.
We left Johannesburg early morning
September the 3rd with 14 bikes; a
mix between BMW, Yamaha, KTM and
Honda and made our way to the Vegkop
memorial just outside Heilbron. From
there we took backroads, all dirt, to
Lindley for a petrol stop. For those of you
who have never been on these roads,
they are highly recommended. They were
perfect to ease us into the trip. There are
stretches where you can open up, sandy
patches and lots of loose gravel. What
more can you ask for?
This is also where the first debate of the
trip broke out. Exactly how much should
you deflate your tyres? I have had this
debate many times over the years and
have come to the conclusion that there is
no right answer. I deflate the front to 1.7
bar and run the back at 1.8. Some don’t
deflate at all and the rest are caught in
the middle. In my not so humble opinion,
not deflating is a great way to challenge
your skills in an environment which is not
safe at all.
We had a newbie with us, so we travelled
at a steady pace without making it too
fast. Before we knew it we were in Lindley
for a fuel stop. They say most bike
accidents happen in parking lots and I
now believe them. Natalie, our newbie,
handled the dirt with aplomb and then
managed a spill on the forecourt. She
broke her wrist. We concluded that Natalie
rides dirt well, but still needs some
practice with filling up.

vehicle.
Checking the tyre pressure
From Lindley we took more backroads to Rosendal where we
had lunch at Op die Dam restaurant. If you’ve never been to
Rosendal, I suggest you put it on your list. It’s a charming town
and the city dwellers are only now discovering it. I suspect it
will soon trend and then become the kind of tourist trap that we
bikers prefer to avoid. But that is still a couple of years away, so
make sure to visit.
Between Rosendal and Clocolan disaster struck. The Provincial
Roads Department only grades the dirt roads in the area once
every six years after the local farmers threaten court action.
There was no way we could have known that their threats paid
off and the roads were graded, enthusiastically by the look of
things, the day before we arrived. What was supposed to be
easy riding on neglected roads, was now nail-biting riding on
loose gravel as deep as the sands of the Kalahari. I was in front,
with my wife Sonja riding pillion and there was no chance to stop
and warn the others. Gunning it was the only option. The group
followed and even managed to pick up the pace as they realised
sand was easier at speed.
My remarks about tyre pressures did come back to bite me in
the butt when I struck or loose rock and ended up fixing a tyre
while the others made their way to Clocolan to refuel.
From there we made our way to St. Augustines, tired, dirty, but
happy. A bonfire, cold beers and braaivleis awaited. We declared
day one done at around 9 in the evening.
Everybody was looking forward to day two, the day of the Orange
Routes with the first stretch taking us up a hardly ever used
mountain pass, across the plateau and down the other side on
the way to a farm named Sumatra. The early settlers obviously
had a sense of humour or they named it in honour of the island
on which they sat out the Anglo Boer as prisoners of war. Before
we could leave, we had to fix our second flat of the trip, a tubed
tyre this time. We wasted little time dispensing with the job.
The lodging for the night

Cycle Technology ccT/A
In life there is always how you remember things and then there
is how they are. What I remembered as a fairly easy pass from
the GS Eco days turned out to be a deep orange ordeal. I think I
might be exaggerating a bit, because the group made it through
without serious mishap. Or I might not be exaggerating. After
two hours of riding we had done exactly 4.2 kilometres of which
the first two was the road getting to the pass. We were behind
schedule.
It was a busy morning with lines to be determined, momentum
calculated and bravery gathered. The one obstacle after the other
tested person, (there were female riders), and machine to the
limit. When we eventually stopped at Sumatra, where the farm
road runs into the provincial road, there were only smiles. The
group had achieved the unthinkable and rode a trail they never
believed they could. Beginners were riding like champions and
the more experienced discovered tricks they never knew they
had.
Because of the time it took, we had to change plans slightly. We
took a shorter route to Verjaarsdag Dam, named after the many
Verjaarsdag parties the farmers have there, for a welcome rest
stop. The water crossing before the turnoff made for spectacular
pictures.
A slow ride then took us to the surprise for the day; the ploughed
field to practice your sand riding skills, with the farmer permission
and blessing of course. Ploughed fields are perfect for this.
It’s loose enough for you to get used to the movement of the
bike in slow motion and challenging enough to test your bravery.
Only momentum will get you through.
It’s the most fun you can have on a bike with your clothes on.
Not a single biker missed out. There were mishaps, but they
happened at slow speed with no injury to person and machine.
My nephew learned the hard way that feathering your clutch in
sand is not a good idea. He destroyed his clutch and had to ride
the demo Yamaha T7 for much of the rest of the trip. Not too bad
a punishment for a stupid mistake.
We had lunch around three in the afternoon at ‘The Cabin’ farm
stall on the road between Clocolan and Ladybrand. ‘The Cabin’
is considered one of the top farm stalls in South Africa and you
should spend some time there. But we had roads to explore
and were on our way soon after lunch.
The plan was to ride the track on the banks of the Caledon
River which forms the border between the Free State and Lesotho.
We had to let that plan go. A few minutes into the ride we
realised that the recent rain had washed away the drifts and it
would be impossible to take the group through before nightfall.
We made our way back to the main road and St. Augustines.
Steve, the manager, gave a talk about the history of St. Augustines.
It existed long before gold was discovered on the
Witwatersrand and was established as a mission station after
the Basotho King, Moshoeshoe, asked Britain for help to keep
the white cattle farmers off his land. It’s a piece of history not
taught in schools any longer, but a piece of history that still impacts
South Africans and the BaSotho to this day. You should
stay over at St. Augustines and ask him to tell you the story.
Sunday was spent making our way home. After breakfast we
again took the back dirt roads from Clocolan past Ficksburg towards
Fouriesburg. Riders who had never been on dirt before,
were now riding like experienced adventure specialists. Water
crossings and sandy patches which would have been daunting
the day before, were now navigated with a new confidence.
Well ahead of schedule, we were in Clarens. We rode out of
town to Noah’s Cheese, about 25km on the road to Bethlehem.
There Danie Crowter, the owner and cheese maker, explained
to us how cheese is made. We gorged on his cheese platters,
had something cold to drink and said our goodbyes. The trip
was officially over.
My wife and I arrived home at around six in the evening. The
Covid spell was broken. We saw with our own two eyes that
there’s still a wide world out there, many roads to explore and
people to meet. Modderbok and I are already planning the next
ride.
The Bikes
Yamaha T7
I am unashamedly a Yamaha fan and a client of Shimwells
Yamaha. I have known Brahm Botha and the rest of the Shimwells
family for well over 15 years now and when they heard
about our trip, they suggested we take their T7 demo with us.
Everybody wanted to ride it. It looks mean, sounds mean and it
means business.
Ekkie Durouw said “You just want to jump over things with it. It
makes you feel naughty”. Edward Campbell said “I want one.
This is my next bike. It’s a perfect mix between adventure and
rough stuff”.
Francois Feirrera said “I’m a KTM man, but this thing could
make you change your mind”.
I rode it with my wife on the back. She liked it even more than I
did and I am in love with it. I think adventure bikes have grown
too heavy and have too many electronics. Not this bike. It has
one button and that is to disengage the ABS. From there it’s
you, the suspension and the throttle. It’s without a doubt my
next bike. Yamaha has let a cat loose amongst the pigeons and
it growls.
Fun in the sand
Honda CRF 1100 Africa Twin DCT
The thing is automatic. How can that possibly work? The bike
decides on your behalf. You are just along for the ride.
That’s what I thought when I picked it up from ADA, the official
rider training academy for Honda. Heine Engelbrecht and I also
have a long history from the days when we produced Woema
for kykNET.

This was my primary ride for the trip with my wife on the back.
The longer we rode it, the more we started liking it.
On the long open roads, it’s as comfortable as a couch. In the
rough it’s as nimble as an Impala. I don’t know how Honda got it
right, but this bike can do it all.
After a while, when you have found the right setting, even the automatic
box starts making sense. I know of at least two riders on
the trip who will be paying a visit to their nearest Honda dealer.
The Kalahari Rally 2021
Just saying the words “ Kalahari Rally”
creates a mind storm of swirling red sands,
dunes, rippling golden grass, heat, thorns
and the sounds of high-performance engines
revving freely in unleashed pursuit of that
elusive goal, victory!
Add copious amounts of blood, sweat, tears, days of mindboggling
effort, intense concentration, difficult navigation,
late nights, early star-scattered freezing mornings, and you’re
getting close to creating the fuller picture of what rally is all
about! It’s the stuff we all dream about, fuelled by years of
lusting after a Dakar experience as we watch it on television
with the world’s best duelling it out in some far-away country.
Now its closer to home, and quite achievable by any reasonable
rider. At the prize giving the ASO regional rep for Dakar, Daryl
Curtis, told the assembled contestants that after Dakar, the
Kalahari Rally was the next best and toughest rally in the world.
That’s huge! Its ours, right here for the entering, the Dakar
Dream realisable for us mere mortals!! Daryl knows, having
been through the Dakar experience himself as a top rider on
many occasions.
Garth Roberts and his incredible team have now brought us
three events over the last four years, each getting better than
the year before as the accumulated experience is gathered and
refined. So next year is going to ratchet up even a few more
notches, stand by and start getting ready.

Pics by: Extreme Memories Captured

Pics by: Extreme Memories Captured
Entrants this year covered Auto, SXS, Buggy and Moto,
with teams like Red- Lined Motorsport and Penta/ Red-
Lined Motorsport fielding their screaming v8’s, their
sound track being complemented by that Terminator
look-alike, the Century Racing CR5 seven-litre Chevvy
V8 that breathed fire, shook the ground as it passed,
and sent Kalahari squirrels diving for cover! I watched
the Volkswagen Amarok driven by Hennie de Klerk and
Adriaan Roets howling across Mier pan in full chat at
185kph to the finish of the Special Stage, a sound like no
other!
There was a SXS team from Angola, together with a bunch
of other local manne, and then there were the bikes!
The bikes are what really move me the most, with
rally being the final frontier of hardcore two-wheeled
motorsport. Rally on a bike separates the men from the
wannabe’s – the riders duel it out through some of the
toughest terrain the country has to offer, flat out, while all
the while also having to read the “tulips” on the roadbook
in front of them, remembering to scroll forward as they
hurtle through the bush, over the rocks, through kilometres
of thick and soft, hot sand, an yet still remain on the
invisible track.
This aint easy, yet somehow the top boys do it at a speed
that makes the eyes water! This ability to navigate under
these conditions turns up a few surprises every year,
as one can only ride as fast as one knows where one is
going. So each event there emerge a few guys who rate
much better than their age or riding ability would suggest,
due to their ability to nav without getting lost!
So even if you might think that you are not able to
compete with the fast boys in offroad or enduro, rally
presents the opportunity to level that playing field
substantially, so start thinking about making an entry in
2022 if you have half a mind to get involved.
The Kalahari Rally is now an official Road to Dakar
qualifier, and thus the competition was hot for the first
spot that would give the winner this fantastic step-up
towards a Dakar entry.
Charan Moore from Lesotho and John Kelly from
Botswana slugged it out for the lead, and by the
conclusion of stage 2 Charan had established a
commanding lead, but was dealt a cruel blow when his
motor dropped a valve later on in the rally. However,
this is racing, and when I spoke to him in the Rietfontein
bivouac, he accepted it ruefully in good spirit. John
eventually went on to triumph overall and win the Road to
Dakar prize, boosting his entry hopes for the 2022 Dakar
substantially.

We did something completely different this year at the KR,
and took along twenty-five adventure bike riders in their newly
formed Adventure Raid class The vision behind this category
was to allow prospective future full-race entrants to have a
window to look through at what rally consists of in all its aspects,
while not having to incur the cost nor complexity of building a
road-book equipped racer. They were classified as full entrants
to the rally, sharing in all the responsibilities and benefits of the
KR, with the exception of being non-competitive entrants who
rode on a gps route following in the main the liaison stages
and not being timed. The guys had a great deal of fun over
the seven riding days that took them from Mafeking at the
start deep into the red dune country at Rietfontein and Mier
on the Namibian border and back. A very special option to be
considered by any adventure rider wanting to up their sand
riding skills in particular.
Honda South Africa has
very kindly loaned us their
Africa Twin for a couple of
months and we’ve done
quite a lot of mileage on
what can only be described
as a very comfortable,
capable adventure machine.
As you do, we’ve spent a
lot of time on the tar - and
almost as much in the dirt.
Approximately 9000KM’s on
this big 1100cc Parallel twin.
Our Kyle Lawrenson has entered
the Honda Quest on the bike and for
the Pre Qualifier, which consisted of
lots of sand, he needed a bit more
traction than the standard Karoo
Street fare provides.
We opted to fit Michelins Anakee
Wild 70/30 tyres and we’ll share our
thoughts...
Specialization may be fine for something like golf clubs, but we think great motorcycles should
be able to do it all. Case in point: The 2021 Honda NC750X. This is a bike is for motorcyclists who
appreciate both versatility and virtuosity in their adventure machines. This year, we’ve given this
model some big improvements. More power. A larger integrated storage area. Lighter weight,
and a lower seat height. Plus some huge technologic
riding modes, new instruments, a new frame, upgraded bodywork, and standard ABS. At its
heart, the twin-cylinder engine produces a broad torque curve as well, making it a joy to ride.
And you can choose from two transmissions: a conventional manual-clutch six-speed, or
Honda’s revolutionary automatic DCT. Either way, this latest NC750X is going to be the perfect
one-bike choice for the rider who wants to do it all.
THE POWER OF ADVENTURE
The cylinder head is completely revised, as is the larger diameter 46mm
throttle body; the bore and cylinder pitches are also now aligned to create
a smooth air intake profile. The ECU setting is new and the injector angle
has been modified to deliver a more direct spray into re-shaped twin-spark
combustion chambers.
HEAT CYCLE.
WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?
We were asked by Michelin to please ensure that we do
proper heat cycles on these tyres before we go out and
thrash them through the bushes and more importantly, on
tar! The heat cycle process on these tyres simply consists
of 5 cycles. What does this mean? Do a small ride and let
the tyres warm up. Don’t ride hard or wheelie just day to
day riding. Once the tyres are completely cold, ride again.
Now, this could be to work and back for the first few days
of having the tyres. If you put the tyres on and ride like
a knob straight away you can expect far less life on any
tyre.
We did the heat cycle over 3 days. Work and back and
general running around. On day 4 we did our Gyppo
work Friday ride. This was a 500 kay ride on-road and
off-road. With sandy sections, rocky sections and a goat
pass out and over a rocky hill.
2004
2-
2
6
Road riding:
Kyle did the heat cycles and Glenn took the Twin directly
after that was done, so he rode normally on the Karoo
streets and then went directly onto normal riding the
Anakees.
He says:
“I think it’s safe to say that I have done the majority of
the road mileage on this Africa Twin while we have had
it. I did a fair amount of dirt, but our resident rock hopper
seems to end up on it every time there is even a sniff of
dust in the air.”
BIGGE
SI
POL
“The Anakees have an R Rating - max speed of 170KPH,
so you have to bear that in mind when you fit a tyre like
this. Take it a bit easier on the throttle. However, and we
are not proud but we have all gone faster than that on
these... All in the name of science after all”
“The first time I rode the bike with the Anakee’s was from
our offices and out to Kyalami to call on a customer.”
“At slow pace there is a very small vibration from the
tyres. After all they are not perfectly round and smooth.
I fully expected the bike to be a bit less stable on the
straights, but it’s not. Up to the 200KPH mark the bike
feels just fine. I expected a lot of road noise, but strangely
enough, it’s not annoying and you only really hear the
back tyre and not the front. C’mon! It’s not a thing! Lots
of you oakes reading this have got fat takkies on your
bakkies and they make a noise. It’s to be expected. On
tar, corners feel a little bit less sure than a more road
oriented tyre, but you quickly adapt learn to ride around
that. It’s almost as if the first couple of times, the bike
feels a bit taller and top heavy, almost like it wants to dip
and you tend to turn wide. That’s the nature of a semi
knobbly, it’s just a thing that you need to get used to.
Within a ride of 50 KM’s you have that figured out and you
ride normally.”
A-
“We have subsequently done a lot of tar commuting and
riding including a two-up blast out to Ermelo to collect
our 4x4 that kindly blew up a few months ago. No issues
at all”

The tyre behaves on dry roads and offers sure
footing. In fact we’d say that its actually quite
good. According to Michelin this was the first
Radial Adventure tyre on the market. Radial
tyres dissipate heat better than bias-ply tyres,
which allows them to travel at higher speeds for
greater distance while offering more comfort and
improved feel and handling. Interesting. And then,
we hit a section of wet tar.... and that all changed,
like any aggressive adventure tyre that’s not really
very much fun.
Of course, the biggest advantage in fitting a tyre
like this is in the dirt where you need traction
and that’s where this one is a really great option.
If you live on a farm with a long gravel driveway
or a long gravel road into town then this is a tyre
that you should be looking at. Heading out into
the Karoo to explore our vast networks of gravel?
Great option. And when the going gets tough and
you have to get to the top of that mountain to
collect a mutton chop that has gone astray, you
are going to need some traction. And this one
delivers that in bucketloads.
Off-Road Riding:
A week after fitment, Kyle attended the Honda
Quest Pre-Qualifier. Now, this was basically a test
to see who could ride through thick sand.
M
AFF
A
S
H
“I didn’t come across any issues. Rolled on and
within a few meters, I was on top of the sand
carrying on as if I was on a dirt bike. Between the
sand sections, we did a few tight and twisty bits
through some trees. This is where I really found
the advantage of this tyre. If there was a slight rut
or berm I could comfortably throw the bike into it
and roll out with ease. I can tell you right now that
with the more street oriented tyres that the bike
came with it would not have been much fun.”
“When we did the photoshoot for this article
we went out to our local MX track and messed
around. This is where we test some of the dirt
bikes we get. A few moments in I thought I was
Toni Bou doing things on this bike that I would
normally do on a dirt bike. The Honda is a really
balanced machine and when you whip her in
anger she becomes a lot of fun. The one thing
about the Anakee Wild Tyres is they have an
enduro background. So to put it into perspective.
The Wilds are adventure tyres with enduro
characteristics. They haven’t only focused on the
off-road part and lost focus on the road side. The
Wilds have a strong carcass just like their enduro
competition tyres.
To test this I dropped the tyre pressure on the
rear to 1,2bar and did some rock riding. Not Roof
stuff but pretty hardcore for a big bike. The tyres
moulded over the rocks and the grip was very
impressive. This goes to show that you don’t
always need soft knobblies to climb rocks. It
comes down to the carcass and how mouldable
the tyre is. If the bike didn’t weigh 200kilos you
wouldn’t say you were on an adv bike.”
“On the faster open gravel roads, the feedback is
great. We rode some real hardpack rocky roads
as well as thick sandy patches. You don’t get the
feeling of a head shake at all even
after hitting a lurker. It’s a great option
for any gravel.”
Conclusion
We were asked, (told), to really put
these tyres through their paces. Ride
hard and give a honest response.
We were asked to do wheelies, ride
rocks, thick sand and really bad gravel
roads, and tar, so that’s we did. 4000
kays so far. That’s 4000 hard kays.
The rear tyre shows signs of HARD
abusive riding, but looking at the wear
so far, we reckon it’s still good for
another 2000 kays odd. The front tyre
is still in pretty good nick. We reckon
you’ll be running 2 rears for every
front you fit.
The Anakee wild tyres are not enduro
tyres fitted onto an adv bike. They are
proper adv tyres with pretty serious
enduro characteristics.
They make your bike look very
aggressive.
Mileage - 4000 kays of really hard
riding so far. It won’t last as long as a
less aggressive tyre, but it’s a lot more
than we expected.
Performance - Impressive considering
it is a 70/30 off road bias tyre. Just
fine on the road and really good in the
dirt.
