CREW REST: GOODBYE ARTHUR MANSOUR! by Sarah de Wilt Councillor – International QCCA By the outpouring of reactions and messages on Facebook, Arthur is one of the most well-known and well-loved Qantas Group family members in recent memory. His impact on crew is clear for all to see (just visit qfcrew for a visual aid). During this interview, I learned that Arthur has a fearfully good memory for dates, names (and procedures) and could talk underwater… but most palpable is that he has a genuine and enduring love for the job, people and life. And it turns out that he has lived a few – and they keep weaving into each other to make the picture that we now see. Locations, hobbies, interests, skills… Put the kettle on – you’ll need it, I did. I was typing so quickly when he got animated that there was a genuine hazard of a Class D incident. Let’s dive (pun intended) into the man, the mentor that is… You can picture Arthur as a high school maths teacher – he taught from 1985-1988 at James Cook High in Kogarah, Sydney. By chance, he was tutoring a family friend whose sister had just applied to Qantas and he thought it sounded great. Arthur had no real experience in a ‘job application process’ due to being interviewed as a matter of course upon graduating as a teacher. He posted his Qantas application away and despite underpaying the mail charge, his package made it into safe recruitment hands. Arthur then was asked by the post office for the outstanding cost (of 80c). What a sliding doors moment and how different EPs would have been if the underpaid package bounced and he didn’t make the application due date. A further string to his bow was that Arthur qualified as an Arabic speaker due to his Lebanese background. Arthur, without too much formal interview experience at all attended the Qantas panel interview. Another hopeful candidate had what seemed like pre-rerecorded answers, and sounded robotic whereas Arthur was pretty relaxed and genuine. A final question was ‘anything to ask us?’. The candidates had been asked ‘what has been your greatest challenge?’ so Arthur decided to throw this one back to the recruiters. He received his letter of selection, and was told his start date was September. In true aviation style, it was rolled forward to July 18th ‘and the rest was history!’. Arthur started his flying with London trips. He received 75% rounded up standdown (not standdown as we know it these days, but it used to mean ‘rest after a pattern’). Hence, he got 6/7 days off after trips and taught PE back casually at his old employer. Some of the boys didn’t even realise he had left teaching, let alone just flown to Heathrow. The role seemed too good to be true: ‘be nice to passengers then get all this spending money… is that even work??’. 10 SPRING EDITION 2021
