SUN MAN: New Brighton amateur astronomer Sai Shankar loves looking across 149,000,000km of space to record the
activity on the volatile surface of the sun.
VISITING THE sun is
impossible, but for a New
Brighton amateur astronomer
his forays into the boiling
5500 deg C cauldron of
the corona layer of the
sun’s atmosphere are done
photographically.
When asked why, Sai
Shankar, a teacher assistant at
Allanvale School in Bryndwr,
said he loves all kinds of
astro-photography: “But I
especially like photographing
the sun.”
“We forget the sun is a star,
just like all the other stars in
the sky, so when you look at
the surface of the sun you are
looking at a star.
Support
hub
opened
for polio
survivors
• By John Cosgrove
A NEW support hub for polio
survivors has opened near
Addington, catering for an
estimated 600 polio survivors in
the Canterbury region.
Polio New Zealand, in collaboration
with the Duncan
Foundation, launched the new
physical and well-being support
hub based at On the Go Physio.
Polio New Zealand president
Brian Robinson said the assessments
and tailored physiotherapy
programmes will help polio
survivors cope with a syndrome
known as the late effects of polio.
“Following the poliomyelitis
epidemics in the late 1950s, many
survivors are now in their mature
years and experiencing these late
effects,” he explained.
“These effects are common,
affecting perhaps as many as 50
per cent of individuals who contracted
polio, and include associated
pain in muscles, tendons,
ligaments and joints.
“Depression is also common
as everyday activities become
harder to perform because of the
depletion of the motor neuron
pool leading to fatigue.
“The purpose of the
Christchurch Polio New Zealand
Hub is to support people to
achieve their goals for better wellbeing
in a way that suits them,”
Robinson said.
Solid as a rock: Huntsbury
celebrates community
In Brief
RAPAKI TRACK USERS
TOILETING IN GARDENS
Residents of Rapaki Rd have
sought assistance from both the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote and
Spreydon-Cashmere community
boards to facilitate the possible
provision and funding of a public
toilet at the popular Rapaki Track.
Residents advised that they were
experiencing members of the
public toileting in their gardens,
as there was no public toilet
available for the many hikers and
bikers to use on the track.
IN PLACE: Unveiling the
plaque commemorating
100 years of settlement in
Huntsbury were Spreydon-
THE UNVEILING of a plaque
commemorating the 100th
anniversary of the settlement
of Huntsbury was held at the
Huntsbury Community Centre
on Friday.
Among the 32 people attending
the celebrations was Spreydon-Cashmere
Community
Board chairperson Karolin Potter,
who spoke of the efforts of
the 25 residents who had helped
in one way or another to get the
plaque and the stone located,
moved and installed on the site
out in front of the centre.
NUMBER ONE SUPPLIER
TO THE NZ JET BOATING
COMMUNITY FOR OVER
50 YEARS
Potter said that it was good
to see so many residents getting
involved in their community, as
communities were a very necessary
structure in the continued
well-being of neighbourhoods.
Organising committee member
David Drayton said he had
found the rock [the plaque is affixed
to] after wandering around
the hills for about six months
looking for a suitable one.
“It took about six people to
move it into place outside the
Huntsbury community centre
and then we had a plaque
designed and made. Mel Opie
designed the plaque,” he said.
SPEED LIMIT TO BE
INVESTIGATED
A planned new bicycle pump
track and half basketball court
to be sited on Hunter Tce, plus
increased foot traffic from
the recently relocated Opawa
Farmers market, has contributed
to concerns around traffic
management at the South Library
and Beckenham service centre on
Colombo St. Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board has asked
council officers to look at options
to lower the speed limit.
NO CUTBACKS TO KIDS
PROGRAMMES
The Graeme Dingle Foundation
Canterbury region general
manager Chris Davis has assured
schools in the district that, in spite
of a funding shortfall of $60,000
this year, there will be no cutbacks
to their programmes. The
foundation helps 3776 students
each week in Canterbury.
Capturing Sol in all its glory
THE
• From page 1
“It amazes me that we are
living in a time when we can
do something that’s been out
of reach of most amateurs
photographers up until now.
“With the help of an ordinary
refractive telescope and some
affordable specialist equipment
we can now see the sun up
close, it’s quite an experience to
look at it with your own eyes,”
he said.
Shankar said it’s all achieved
by using specialist filters and
some free online software.
“We start off with a white light
filter which lets all the colours
of the visible spectrum through,
but reduces them down to a tiny
percentage, less than one per
cent of what we see.
“This filter shows us the
photosphere of the sun, the layer
of the sun with all the sun spots
happening on it.”
Next he uses is a hydrogen
alpha optical filter designed
to transmit only a narrow
bandwidth of light.
“This filter only lets in a
wavelength of light that is
less than one nanometre
in size; a human hair is
600,000 nanometres in
thickness.
“It gives me amazing views
of a different layer of the sun’s
atmosphere, now I can now see
the chromosphere,” he said.
SOLAR FLARE: A big prominence exploding on the north
east limb of the sun, estimated as high as five or six
earths. Below – a small eruption is bigger than three
earths.
PHOTOS: SAI SHANKAR
This layer has the temperature
ranging from 6000 deg C to
about 20,000 deg C.
“You can still see sun spots
but you can now see
prominences exploding on the
edge of the sun plus a lot of
surface detail.
“It looks amazing and it’s
dynamic, over an hour it can
change immensely,” Shankar
said.
Using a monochromatic
video camera that captures at
100 frames per second, he then
records 30 seconds of imagery at
a time.
“The atmosphere of the sun
is quite turbulent so it’s called
‘lucky photography,’ as over that
30 seconds there will be brief
moments of clarity in the surface
turbulence.
“On screen, your watching
blurry images then suddenly it
jumps into clear sharp focus,“ he
said.
Free photographic stacking
software quickly sorts the
best one-to-five per cent of all
the images captured to produce
a clear, sharp result as a mosaic.
“It finds the best frames and
matches them together into a
black and white image which I
can then colourise to show the
sun.”
From there Shankar said he
will manipulate with them in
Photoshop and produce the
images he is becoming well
known for.
Shanker said he plans to
display his unique imagery
online in the coming weeks.
Polio survivor Jennifer Yorke
has been attending physio
classes for three years and
said without them, her muscle
strength and mobility would
have deteriorated a lot more.
“Polio’s weakening of some
muscles means that other
muscles are overworked to compensate.
“Age is taking its toll on these
overworked muscles. Physio and
exercise routines customised
for me have strengthened the
muscles that I have left and I am
definitely more mobile than I
was three years ago,”she said.
The estimated 600 polio
survivors in the region will be
able to benefit from the Duncan
Foundation’s fully-funded
physical assessments, and Polio
New Zealand subsidised physiotherapy
classes.
Polio New Zealand estimates
there are approximately 9500
poliomyelitis survivors in New
Zealand who could suffer from
the late effects of polio of which
the primary manifestation is
fatigue, which can be severely
disabling.
Woolston. The first part, from the
central city to The Tannery, was
completed in 2019.
Last week the city council’s Urban
Development and Transport
Committee approved the route
for the final section, from The
Tannery to Heathcote.
The committee agreed on a
design that keeps the two-way
access on the section of Cumnor
Tce between Maunsell St and
Chapmans Rd. The council had
consulted on the possibility of
making this section one-way.
The committee also approved
consultation on a 40km/h speed
limit on Cumnor Tce alongside
the cycleway.
Urban Development and
Transport Committee chair Mike
Davidson said, “We’re already
seeing cyclists enjoying the city
end of the Heathcote Expressway
cycleway and the Heathcote end
of the route is another key part of
our city-wide cycleway network.
“We’re also keen to hear from
the community on a 40km/h
speed limit along Cumnor Tce,
which would help to create a
safer environment for everyone
using the road or the cycleway by
Ōpāwaho Heathcote river.”
Both construction of the
cycleway and consultation on the
speed limit is expected to start in
February. Construction will take
about a year.
Young delegates have a say on their future
• By John Cosgrove
THE NEXT generation of
influencers, environmentalists,
and community leaders got to
voice their concerns about the
future at a special session held at
the city council last week.
Twenty-four children, aged
from 10 to 15 years and from
five schools, took the chairs
inside the council chambers and
presented their ideas on coastal
hazards and climate change.
The next generation
conversation workshop focused
on seeking answers from
young people about what they
wanted to see happen on issues
associated with global warming
and climate change, as these
things directly affect their future.
City council senior news and
content editor Lois Cairns said
the point of the exercise was for
the young people to formulate
a submission on the coastal
adaptation framework.
“They had done some prework,
looking at the proposed
guiding principles within the
framework and identifying what
they liked, what they would like
to change, what was missing
and the importance of children
and young people’s voices in the
conversation,” she said.
Pupils from Haeata
Community College, Lyttelton
Primary School, Governors Bay
FOR REAL: In chambers, the young delegates got to vote on each of the four parts of
their final submission on the coastal adaption framework. PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
School, Banks Ave School and
Chisnallwood Intermediate
formed into groups and then,
in chambers, presented their
arguments which the students all
voted on.
The Lyttelton Primary School
group posed the question that
“they may invite us, they may
listen to us, but it will depend on
if they really hear us”.
In front of city councillor and
Sustainability and Community
Resilience Committee
chairwoman Sara Templeton,
ECan councillor Vicky
Southworth and Future Curious
representative Sian Carvell,
the young respondents hotly
debated what their future could
look like.
Keegan Verster, 13, typified the
depth the dedicated year 9 class
at Chisnallwood Intermediate
possessed when he spoke
passionately to the audience
about his feelings for the future.
“It was an amazing experience,
we all have a capability of being
heard and I think we will be
heard,” Keagan said.
His group’s presentation was
about changing the education of
youth to affect change for their
future.
“It’s very important that we all
should be learning about what’s
happening today. How are we
going to stop it if we don’t know
anything about it,” Keegan said.
His class studies the changing
environment and was well
represented at the session,
supplying four of the eight
speakers.
Classmate Sarita Kotze, 13,
found it a huge opportunity, and
said the highlight was speaking
in front of the assembled group.
She hopes it will help her spread
information and influence
change.
Said Sarita: “The facts
shouldn’t be sugar-coated when
discussing climate change.”
Chisnallwood pupil Rosie Paul,
13, said she got so much from the
meeting.
“It was absolutely amazing as
I got to hear the student voice,”
she said.
Teacher Jude Robinson said
the Chisnallwood Intermediate
class were very passionate.
“There are 32 kids in the
class and their passion and
ability to understand the key
issues about climate change is
amazing. As teachers we want to
challenge them, to get them to
take it further and this session
here today is a result of that,”
Robinson said.
The submission the pupils
created will now be considered
along with other submissions the
city council will receive before it
makes a final decision in the
new year.
Students dig in for
future biodiversity
Ko ahau te taiao, ko te taiao, ko ahau –
I am the environment and the environment is me
Fifty-five students and staff from
Cashmere High School gave their
time after school recently to help
plant 175 native seedlings along
our Waimokihi Stream bank to
increase the biodiversity within our
school and protect our waterways.
Their mahi will leave a longlasting
legacy at Cashmere High
School.
Massive thanks to those at
Christchurch City Council for
supporting us to achieve our goals
and providing the beautiful plants.
Massive congratulations to Fynn Skelton, Polly Daniels, Toby Hull and Isaac Macdonald
for beating Christ's College, St Andrews Collage, St. Thomas's and Christchurch Girls'
High at the Senior Theatre Sports competition at The Court Theatre over the weekend.
Great to be able to put that silverware back in the cabinet once again.
Congratulations to
Kaspar Hayes from
our Rugby First
selected to play in
the Canterbury Metro
At the end of October our Dance students shared their work from the year as part of
the annual Cashmere High School Dance Showcase.
It was a beautiful sharing of work that the students had learnt, created themselves
and created for each other. The talent and aroha of the students was clear for all to
see and clearly demonstrates the growth of Dance at Cashmere High School.
Alumni return for basketball game
Great to welcome back Cashmere
High School alumni for our annual
alumni basketball game last
month. The game not only serves
as a way for current players to
reconnect with former students,
but also was the last game of the
season for our year 13 students.
Real estate office marks
first year in business
ADVERTISEMENT
Mike Pero St Martins recently
celebrated its first birthday, marking the
occasion with a free sausage sizzle for
the community, followed by an evening
function at the office for family and staff.
Franchise owner Jo Warren says she
kept it low-key as it had already been
postponed due to Covid restrictions and
lockdown.
Over the last 12 months the office has
become an integral part of the local area,
with people now really starting to notice
they are there, Jo says.
“Since the Bohemian Bakery moved
in next door we have had lots of people
looking in the window and popping in to
say hello.
“Now when I get calls for appraisals
people often mention that they know
my office well and contacted me because
they have seen me in the community and
doing my regular sausage sizzles etc.”
Jo is thrilled with how the business has
grown over the first 12 months.
“It started out slow as I was the new
girl in town but I’ve worked really hard
to prove I’m worth listing with, and
I am now number four agent on the
Rate My Agent website for all agents in
Christchurch.
“At our awards evening held online in
August I won the Top Sales Growth for a
Franchise award for July 2020-June 2021,
and that was out of almost 60 franchises
nationwide.
“I was very honoured and proud to
receive this award, and could not have
done it without my amazing PA Tanya
Robinson and my business partner and
husband Peter Warren, who has over
26 years of real estate experience in
Christchurch.
“I still have no salespeople working in
my office but I am always looking and
hope to have one if not two join me in
the next 12 months. I do have a mortgage
broker now, Sammi Schuurman, who is
a wonderful asset and addition to our
team.”
Jo says there is still a shortage of listings,
which means properties are continuing to
sell quickly and for record high prices.
“People tend to stay in the St Martins
area for a long time, so when a listing
becomes available it gets snapped up as
demand is high from people wanting to
move into the area.
“I have sold many properties for elderly
people moving out of their homes – one
lady had been there for 64 years, and it’s
an honour to be able to make the process
as easy and kind as possible as it is a
big deal for them. I think these are my
favourite clients and I always make sure I
visit them in their new abode, wherever
that may be.”
Also covering the Woolston area, Jo says
this has seen massive growth in the past
and Tanya
Robinson at the
evening function.
18 months.
A year into running her business, Jo
says she loves it.
“I have lived in the area for 15 years,
so it’s an absolute pleasure and privilege
to be able to market homes in my
neighbourhood. I feel this gives my
vendors the best chance of an ultimate
outcome as I have real knowledge and
genuine love for the area.
“And I absolutely appreciate everyone
who gave the new lady in town a chance
to market their homes and allowed me to
make my office the success that it is.”
I live it, I love it, I sell it!
