Canterbury University professor and Covid-19 modeller Michael Plank said the Auckland boundary Michael Plank was always a stop-gap measure to delay the spread of the virus to other parts of New Zealand while vaccination rates improved. The Ministry of Health said the person, who returned to Christchurch on November 13 on flight NZ1295, became symptomatic on Sunday and undertook a test on Monday. They live in a household of six people, who are self-isolating pending their test results. It is the first confirmed case in the city since a woman and man tested positive after travelling from Auckland three weeks ago. Passengers on the flight were advised to monitor for symptoms over the next 10 days and get tested as a precaution. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday said New Zealand is expected to move to the ‘traffic light’ system soon after November 29. The Auckland boundary is expected to open up for vaccinated people or those who tested negative 72 hours before departing the city from December 15. Air New Zealand said the status of travellers would be reviewed at the checkin stage at Auckland airport. Plank said the Auckland border opening 10 days before Christmas ensured cases would crop up all over the country over the summer, regardless of preventative measures. ‘‘People leaving Auckland will have to be either fully vaccinated Jacinda Ardern or to test negative in the 72 hours before departure. This will reduce the number of infectious people travelling around the country but, since neither vaccination nor testing is a 100 per cent guarantee, it won’t prevent it altogether,” he said. “In addition, around one in five cases in the current outbreak has been in under-12s who are not eligible for the vaccine and are exempt from the testing requirement.’ ‘‘Where these cases land in highly-vaccinated communities, it’s likely the virus will hit a dead end and fizzle out. But cases that find their way into undervaccinated communities will be able to spark serious outbreaks.” Professor Nick Wilson, from the University of Otago’s department of public health, wanted stronger attempts at keeping the Covid-19 outbreak contained to Auckland and to stamp out outbreaks in various parts of the North Island. “This could give the rest of the country more weeks or months to get vaccinated, to get boosters, to vaccinate five to 11 year-olds, to improve access to anti-viral medicines, and to make ventilation upgrades to buildings,’’ he said. While it was ‘‘very good’’ the Government was planning on some border protection, Wilson said it should include other requirements such as a negative rapid antigen test result at the point of boarding a flight or ferry to the South Island. Meanwhile, the system that allows fully vaccinated people to request their vaccine pass or certificate went live yesterday and was quickly overwhelmed in spite of being able to produce 200 certificates per second. The Ministry of Health also confirmed the death of a man in his 60s on Tuesday. Opinion was divided Bianca Shan: I’m surprised [about the new case] because I thought there were stricter border rules in place. I thought we would be okay down here because of the restrictions in place. For the time being I don’t think people should travel from Auckland because there’s new cases there everyday so it could spread here. I think it’s quite sad. A lot of people will be angry. Andrew Moorhouse: It was bound to happen. I think Auckland has hit their vaccination rate so I think it’s fair enough that they should be able to travel. Marie Harvey: I’m not too happy about it, it’s concerning. I think there should be restrictions and people should have to have tests before they leave. Brendon Moir: I’d hope people would be more careful with making sure they scan and wear masks. I think we’ve got complacent. I think it is going to come to the South Island so the more people that get vaccinated the better. It’s a little worrying having people travel here but you can’t stop it forever. Jemma Lumb: It concerns me because if we go into lockdown I can’t go shopping and see my friends and family. Andrew Dean: I’m not concerned because I’m fully vaccinated. People should be able to travel from Auckland if they are fully vaccinated.
