AUSTRALIAN GIRLS IN SYNCH FOR MELBOURNE
Synchronised swimmers when compared to other Olympic athletes are second only to long distance
runners in aerobic capacity and to gymnasts in flexibility. Often described as “all-round” athletes they
must combine endurance, strength, flexibility and coordination with finely honed technical skills,
possess a strong creative streak, and develop an ability to interpret music.
Achieving this level of physical fitness and strength demands many hours of training, with pool workouts
averaging 25 to 30 hours each week and additional hours in other fitness activities.
To execute the underwater portion of the routines, the swimmer must be trained to hold her
breath, whilst also moving her legs above the water, or supporting her team mates in the execution of a
platform, lift or throw.
In the sport’s solo, duet and team events, movement is Synchronised to music. In duet and team, the
athlete must also swim in harmony with her team members. In every event, strength, endurance and
coordination combine with grace and beauty in a display of athleticism.
Australia has been competing in World Championships Belgrade 1973, in the Solo event, and with
duets and solos in the following years. The first team to compete at a World Championships was in
Madrid in 1986, and since then Australia has been represented at World Championship events in either
Solo, duet or the team events, the last one being in 2005 in Montreal.
Australia also competed at the first Olympic Games for Synchronised Swimming in 1984 in Los Angeles
and have only missed one Olympic event since that year.
The base squad for the World Championships in Melbourne was formed following the World
Championships in Montreal in 2005, with further selections held and the final team of (10) selected in
2006.
The Team will compete in the Solo, Duet and Team events. – JACINTA GUTHRIE
